  1. Halls up by 21... looks like a very long season for GC
  2. How about them Rebels in 2010? How will Coach Jim Carr and my boys do without T Martin? Who did they play in the spring and what is the outlook for 2010?
  3. The kid will be ineligible now no matter where he lives. He lived in Franklin County while commuting to Moore Co, now he must sit out one year under TSSAA rules because he never lived in Moore County. Strange rule but it is in the handbook.
  4. Pepsi you will not get 4th block athletics back in FC. The DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS put an end to it and she has stated she will not address the issue again. This is why 4 or 5 men turned down the position before they offered it to Coach Carr. They could have hired Mac McCurry. The sticking points as I understand them came down to about $10,000 which he was willing to lower, 4th block athletics, and he wanted to work in the cafeteria in 3rd block and teach two weight training classes (one being 4th block football). The previous coaches had contracts that would have provided $5,000 additional funds and all the boosters had to do was match that amount out of the tens of thousands they raise each year. There was only one or two on the booster club that objected to paying the money to get Mac. Oddly enough they both wanted Carr because he was willing to take a pay cut if that was what it took to get the job. I have been told that the things Mac asked for were not out of the norm. I think the money could have been worked out in other ways. The local car dealerships (all owned by the same man) were willing to provide extra money to the coach to promote their products. I think the sticking points were with the number of classes Mac would have had to have taught and the 4th block football class. If they would not agree to it to bring in the right coach then why would you think they will consider it for coach Carr? I have said it before I have nothing against coach Carr. He is a good man as far as I can tell but he does not have any experience as a head football coach. I just don't see this team improving next year and it will be a rebuilding season at best without Terrance Martin, Childress, and Jonah Sells. There is no offensive line to speak of and not much in the way of defensive backs or linebackers. A few good young 10th grade athletes but at least one is headed to Huntland because his mom has said she will not allow him to play for Carr and Reed and another to Tullahoma at the end of this school year because the family is moving to CC. There are reports that Moore County officials are talking to Atkins and that at least one possibly two players may be headed in that direction if Atkins gets the job in Lynchburg. This is going to take three to five years to just get back to the place it was this season and I don't see much progress for at least two seasons. I'm notbeing negative just realistic. I will be the first to stand up and give Coach Carr and Reed credit when they turn this ship around and win a region championship but that has not happened in 14 or 15 years. I think you have to go back to Red Roberts team in the 90's to find a great season with the exception of one winning year with Mantooth.
  5. There is a report coming out of Winchester that Atkins is the new head coach at Moore County and that he is bringing two players with him. Is that legal? I doubt it. He has also told several folks he agreed to run the Wing-T to get the position. It is also being said that he is bringing two assistant coaches to lynchburg.
  6. No head coaching experience. I like Coach Carr but remember he was the kicking coach last season. Three blocked punts, two missed PAT's. Special teams cost the Rebels three ball games. Steve Britton was a great assistant coach that had no head coaching experience and even though he had a couple of state championship rings he could not manage to win more than five games in two years. Atkins had two or three district championships and was coach of the year in two states and could not win more than 9 games in 2 years. Mantooth is the one who should have been brought back to coach football. He is the best coach in school history, even better than the great Red Roberts imho. I have spoken to a lot of locals who are upset that the director of school would not bend to get Mac McCurry. He came down on his financial demands and the booster blub was willing to help out but the director killed the deal because she would not bring back 4th block athletics for football. There are a lot of very upset Rebel fans in FC today. I hope Coach Carr does well for my Rebels but there will be many challenges ahead. I wonder if Coach Atkins gets the job in Moore County if any players drift to lynchburg. Every few years Moore county steals a few of FC's better players.
  7. coach carr has been an assistant coach at fchs for 10 years. no previous head coaching experience.
  8. The local radio station is reporting Jerry Joslyn and Mac McCurry have applied for the job. Why would these two men apply for a job that pays less than the positions they currently hold? Scott Smith has been rumored to be the front runner and several sources said he was offered the job so why would these two veteran coaches jump into the fray?
  9. I don't think anyone knows for sure because Mantooth ain't talking about it in public but a lot of locals think all the interviews are just one big dog and pony show. The new head coach is going to be someone on staff or local. Brewer, Carr and Winston's names come up in discussions with Reed in the mix.
  10. When Britton was hired they had a friendly administration that cleared out some slots so he could hire several assistants. They did the same thing for Atkins. They can't fire tenured teachers and that's about all that's left. The new Director has already said the new coach will have to work with the men on staff. She has already cut out all the fat from the school system to reduce the budget including coaching pay. They did away with 4th block athletics and many other things good coaches expect to develop athletes. She will not do what previous administrations has done to make room for assistant coaches. The new man will be forced to work with the staff in place unless they fire Brewer and I don't see that happening.
  11. No offense to the last poster but the staff did a good job. The team was 4-6 but could have been 8-3 with 9 or 10 extra points. They lost several games by 1 or 2 points. Coach Brewer and Coach Winston are both former HC's and Jim Carr is well respected. Only a total idiot would get rid of them. Next years team will have a very good senior QB and junior RB. The key may be how quickly the new coach can put together an offensive line. Scott Smith, Trae Aric, Steve Matthews have reportedly interviewed along with three local coaches. I also heard the Pigeon Forge HC applied plus an assistant from Tullahoma and Stewart County and the HC from Lighthouse Christian. The radio guy said Steve Carson withdrew his name after the interview. Franklin County has one of the best facilities in the state but three good coaches (atkins, britton and mantooth) have struggled at times at this program. Mantooth won 7 games in one season and that's the best this decade. The next two years could be rebuilding seasons for the Rebs? It would be interesting to see Smith or Aric as head coach running the T-Franklin system with Wooten at QB. It could work! I thought Jim Carr would be the next HC but he has not applied. I think Smith, Matthews and Aric would all be safe picks but none of them had any more success this past season at their schools than Coach Atkins staff this season with Martin and the Rebs. One thing is sure they will miss T.O. Martin! Best RB in school history IMHO. Whoever they hire will not be able to bring any coaches with him because there will be only 1 teaching slot open for the head coach. Everyone on staff has tenure except Brewer so the new guy had better make friends with the coaches on staff. Coach Reed from South may be the next head coach at FC because he has done a great job at SM but I don't see Mantooth hiring him over Smith or Aric who are both proven experienced HC's at the HS level.
