  1. Seriously though, does it really make that big of a difference? If it is about being comfortable in your surroundings, then my point of moving the individual meet is still valid. How many times a year do Chattanooga kids go to open mats at UTC and roll around. If they do that as frequently as once a month, I would say that based upon what I think is your arguement, that it is an unfair advantage th the kids in Chattanooga to have the individual tourney at UTC. Personally, I think it is silly. Clarksville does a great job. They obviously have a very ethical coach, based upon his earlier post, and I have yet to hear anyone complain that it is poorly run.
  2. Silly arguement. If the state duals shouldn't be in Clarksville because it give them an unfair advantage, then why should state individuals be in Chattanooga. That too should be in a neutral site as well.
  3. Bartlett will claim that no matter what.
  4. Just calling it like I see it. Peck has beaten everyone in Region 10 all year long. Didn't Rogers lose during preseason to Conley from Bolton? Rogers is good, I just think Peck is better. We'll see in a couple of weeks. Good luck to him.
  5. What he said. It's not even close. A lot of that comes from the lack of feeder programs, but some of it is also due to the lack of TN wrestlers continuing with the sport in college and then coming back to teach/coach with that college room mentality in the TN schools. In the states that Littlet mentioned, I would say that every strong competitive team has at least 1-3 former college wrestlers in the room rolling with the kids and teaching technique. Cleveland and Bradley are great examples where that philosophy has worked.
  6. Peck is the best that Region 10 has to offer this year. Better than Jones, or anyone else, I don't think that is a tough debate. He can be somewhat predictable in the neutral position but the kid is solid in all positions.... and you better have a gas tank facing him. He should be a high placer this year.
  7. Even w/ a torn MCL Kendall still takes that one. MCL's heal quickly, depending upon the location of the tear. Hope he gets well.
  8. I think you are confusing me with someone else. I am no longer affiliated with any teams in the area. I do attend matches to watch my oldest.....The Bolton coach was sitting in the same section as we were last weekend that's how I knew his weight.
  9. No need for that Panama, Shatner had a 2 point match with him last year @ regions. I think the kid to watch @ 103 is the little kid from Bolton. That little guy is fast and if he was bigger I would bet his results against the bigger 103's would be very positive. I am willing to bet that he will win region 10 and possibly place in the state tourney next year. He is in on Shatners legs, and everyone else's for that matter, whenever I see him go. I think he was a schoolboy state champ or something like that. He is one to watch. I asked his coach what he weighed and he said 87. Give him 13 pounds and let him go w/ Shatner.
  10. SAC, What the heck is structured validity. Do you mean a structured or complete thought? Hopefully you are not a teacher too. My response rambled because I was trying to answer several of you defensive knuckleheads at once. In response to your comments, Gable doesn't coach anymore, he hasn't in 10+ years. Brands coaches in IA now and the only wrestler he has who is constantly attacking is their 149 lber - I need not name him as you are probably on a first name basis. Chertow might not teach funk but his guys are versed in it and when caught can and do pull it out of their bag of tricks. Watch any competitive match on FloWrestling based in Pennsylvania and you'll see funk. What you'll also see is Chertow. You telling me he doesn't teach funk, maybe not live, but he surely does. Do me a favor and watch a couple of clips from the Beast or the NHSCA's of PA guys, guys who in all likelihood went to a Chertow camp or 2. I am not bombarding W TN wrestling. The question was asked who looks good, and I mentioned that it doesn't look that good as compared to years past. I did not claim I was the end all to coaching this sport nor did I reccommend that I should start clinics and such, I simply stated that the way that Memphis HS wrestling will really prosper is to have a couple of former collegiate wrestlers take over a couple of programs, with a desire to see the sport grow and become more popular in their school. It's college guys who can do that. Not youth coaches, not me a volunteer coach. Look at Bradley, how many guys wrestle at a young age in the hopes of making that team in High School? That's what I am talking about. That is what many of the Shelby County schools need if wrestling is going to be successful in Memphis not just CBHS. and to your final point.... I grew up in PA and NJ and wrestled quite successfully there in HS and college, so I do not feel as if I have fallen short. You my Napoleonic friend sound as if you did. Go have a beer and chill out. Quit being so defensive. I applaud what you are doing. I wish I could do it more, but I can't. I am lucky I can do what I do now, but there is always someone who can do it better, that is all I am suggesting and that suggestion is what could make Memphis comparable to chattanooga. BRONZEGOAT72 You may also wish to do your research on what makes youth wrestlers successful. Unfortunately, you are going to have to seek out the wisdom of those coaches who you indirectly refer to as old and less energetic. Gable references constant attack, not defense, in his opinion of what makes the Hawkeye??™s successful. Purler, as their system indicates, teaches a foundation in wrestling, which would suggest the basics. Again something Gable consistently stresses to his wrestlers. Moreover, Chertow specifically stated that "funk" wrestling places youth wrestlers at risk for knee injuries and therefore does not teach it to them. After reading your postings, as you may want to do again, you are quite personal in your suggestions. Not to mention that your postings are all over the place and you appear to have no real structured validity. Your constant bombardment of West Tennessee wrestling suggests that either you fell short of it in some capacity, or you really aren??™t as close to it as you suggest. Regardless, this forum exists to better our sport and if you have the answers, as you have suggested, maybe you should be a pioneer and run your first clinic here in Memphis. SAC
  11. and you wonder why I don't want to give you my name, you are borderline irrational. I never once attacked CBHS, the coaches and/or the kids. I made some points that you obviously disagreed with and you took to the personal attacks. Last year I went to the Beast and Super 32. Not youth tournaments, but solid national HS tourneys. I used Independence as an example, that's it. I hope your friend takes the compliment well and doesn't flip it around. Just so that you know I am not sitting on my hands and helping to make the process better - in the last 5 years I have been actively coaching in the Memphis area at 2 different schools, spending countless days in the practice room teaching technique and rolling with anyone willing to learn. BTW - I think you were successful in showing your toe I am done
  12. Jacka** - I actually know both Purler brothers personnally...stop being infantile........... I am not trying to hurt any feeling so quit taking it so personally. GHouse aren't you and Lewis on the staff at CBHS? You have a good program over there. You guys have done well wherever you have traveled - congrats. You guys are solid - I am not trying to detract from your program, coaches or your kids. And I agree that funk defense is a last resort, but you will see it used a ton more often in other venues than you will in West TN. Maybe your kids at CBHS use it, I didn't see it when I have watched your guys, with the exception of Bauke(SP?), and 2 other kids I saw wrestle earlier this year, but you have to admit that it is not in the arsenal of most kids in the area as it is in other areas. Is the wave club the CBHS feeder club? I haven't heard of it by that name (Wave), but if that is it then yes I am aware of that one as I know a couple of guys who help out over there. As for the comment about age of a coach, please look at my earlier post. There is no denying that those guys are great coaches. What I was referring to was what would take Region 10 wrestling to the next level, and in my opinion it is younger coaches who can bring college level practices and intensity to a wrestling room. If you think about Gable, J Rob, etc. they all started coaching when they were young, that's when they established their tradition and the strength of their programs. Look at Ryan at OSU, Sanderson @ ISU both young guys re-energizing different programs. Now they are obviously at a different level than what I am talking about, but that is what I believe it takes. A great example of what I am referring to is Independence HS. Where were they 5 years ago? How long has their coach been in place? 2 years maybe 3, and I would venture to say that they are a top 5 team in TN. (wrestled at Cumberland didn't he?)Those kids are solid, saw them a month ago @ Cordova and they were the class of the meet by a ton. CBHS wasn't there, but almost all of the other W TN schools were and they put it to everyone. No need to list my name as I do not want any knuckleheads making bad remarks or biasing my kids. Obviously my comments struck a nerve, but lets put it to bed. My vision is obviously different than most, but I have seen it work time and again.
  13. As a former coach, I hate to tell you but 2 programs do not make a region. Having seen the coaches at one school (CBHS) I must disagree with you that they are not exceptional - no offense intended at all. They do work very hard, they do have the best program in West TN, but they are not what I am describing. CBHS has an awesome feeder program, the best in W TN. W TN takedown is a good club, but it too is not what I am talking about. I am talking about GREAT..... Not OK, not up there with TN. I mean great, and that will be difficult to attain with the present mix of coaches. As to your mention that Memphis is right there teaching and developing youngsters..... I disagree. Show me one kid who has been taught any funk for takedown defense. It is the norm in IL, MN, MO, PA, OK, NJ.... It is not taught in west TN. That is what a young energetic, experienced, fired up coach brings to the table, whether in junior high or High School. It just insn't in W TN. Didn't mean to step on your toes, but facts are facts.
  14. Region 10 might have been a strong region, but it isn't anymore. Let the end of the season back it up. Chattanooga is the #1 region, anytime you have a solid D1 program that opens it's doors for club competition every week, and exposes the kids in the area to D1 athletes and training techniques, they are going to be tough. The entire Nashville region smokes Memphis right now. More kids wrestle year round and it's that mat time that makes champions. Name one club in Memphis that goes year round and in the evenings during the week. How many in-season camps are there in Memphis, ZERO, there is just no draw in Region 10. Toughest kid in the region, just my opinion, is Peck from Houston. The kids flat brings it. Tough all around and constantly trying to improve. Really solid on his feet, and on top, could improve on bottom, but all HS level guys can and will once they get pounded in a college room for a couple of months. From what I have seen, he has a shot at winning states, but he'll have a battle no doubt. Next is Germantown's 103lber, if he can get back to 103. That kid is tough, strong and has solid fundamentals. If he can get down there he should hammer Shafner from Kingsbury, and then makes some noise at state. The kid from Bartlett @ 171 is beatable. Someone mentioned he has yet to be scored on, so what. That's great but irrelevant in february. Gonna use that to seed him at state. Doubt it, it's not a criteria, it just speaks to my point that the region is not what it used to be. The kid from Bolton (Mobley) lost to him 2 times last year, once by tfall or close to it, and then beat him twice when it counted. Let's face it, there just aren't any shoe in's this year. Brandon Wright, Luke Borneman, Demetrius Johnson, Marable, they are gone and I have yet to see anyone close to their caliber at the HS or junior high level in Memphis. 3 years ago, I think, I watched Borneman spladle Marable at a tournment. Marable got out and went on to win, but that was a special time for wrestling in Memphis. That is gone right now. In all honesty, it takes a solid feeder program, and young energetic coaches with a tremendous passion to build a great program, and I mean GREAT not good, GREAT. If you don't have a young energetic coach you need a tenured coach with a great reputation and solid teaching skills in all positions. Look at Bradley and their staff - young and energetic. Cleveland - Eslinger is a great coach and he can get it done. Father Ryan - awesome tenured coaching. When Memphis can attract some good young coaches who can energize the schools to put out a team and attract the best athletes, then Memphis will get back in the groove. Just one parent's opinion.
  15. It takes 4 things: 1. Desire 2. Athletic ability 3. Great Practice Partners & Coaches 4. Ability to Prioritize Wrestling in college is totally different from HS. Everything is at a much different level. You see lots of guys who were great athletes/wrestlers in HS not make it in college because they just can't handle everything that is thrown at them in the college environment, not to mention the stiff competition int he room, the increased practice intensity, etc. At some point it becomes more of a mental game, but freshman year in college it is still all of the top 3 listed above more than anything else.
  16. This region is as weak as I have ever seen it. There are some decent guys but I doubt anyone will win a state championship in Region 10. I take that back, there might be a couple on the parochial side, but honestly I haven't seen anyone who I would say will or should win a state title. Best chance at a high finish (top 3) is probably Peck from Houston and Kermick from Germantown if he gets to 103. A top 8 finish could be had by Rogers @ 215, Conley @ 189, and Jones, Penson or King from Cordova, and maybe the heavy at Brighton. Overall wrestling is way down in Region 10. Sorry to say but that is the reality. We need better elementary/middle school competition and feeder programs. Too many people think football, basketball are the only sports in West TN. Good luck to all..
