  1. Goliath? Red Bank was definitely the best team we would have to face, but I wouldn't have called it a David vs. Goliath matchup. Greeneville just should have been ranked higher. What a great game though, two proven teams in the old 4A went at it and Greeneville came out on top. Good Luck vs. Whites Creek. Was Whites Creek an old 4A school as well, or did I just dream that up?
  2. I'm not saying there coaching was good, but that was probably a good call. If they would have made the tackle a half second sooner, they would have gotten a shot at the endzone. When your down, you have to take all opportunities.
  3. I can't answer that question, because I wasn't one of the few that decided to do it. Maryville has over 1600 students that is why they are now in the top division where they belong. Elizabethton has one of the best teams they have had in years and could easily beat most of 4A.
  4. Greeneville may have a tough time adjusting when they finally face a worthy opponent again. Since there is probably less than 10 in the entire division, I'm guessing Chatt. Central is not one of them. The hard part will be getting those guys to prepare for each game not really knowing how good their opponents will be.
  5. Don't know much about Chatt. Central or Brainerd, but if you go by seeding it looks like two more easy teams before facing Redbank in the third round, by far the best team we could face. They were consistently winning their conference in the old 4A.
  6. Tennessee High and Greeneville used to play every year. I would say Greeneville has played Tennessee more than they have Mo East or Mo West. Greeneville All Time Results: Vs. Tennessee High 44 Games 15-26-3 Vs. Morristown East 36 Games 22-14 Vs. Morristown West 35 Games 13-22 From Greenevillefootball.com This is a little misleading, as Greeneville has played Morristown East and West pretty much since they opened. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Morristown High School split into Morristown East and West. If so, you can tack on another 41 games vs. Morristown High School to the totals.
  7. It is disappointing, but I would hardly say the future is dismal. The coach may be gone, but decades of tradition will still remain. Greeneville's biggest obstacle for the next few years will be avoiding a talent drop off due to the reclassification.
  8. Not allowing a coach to pray would be forcing Atheism on him. Would this not be a violation of separation of church and state, the same law they are using against him?
  9. This is true unless the two teams are from the same conference. In that circumstance the higher seed is home. This may be a source of confusion to some, as Maryville has been home most of the time in the 3rd round due to this provision.
  10. Thankyou. I'm glad to see that some others don't think a criminal conviction is required before dismissing a player from a team or making them sit out a game.
  11. Most significant State Championship in the history of high school sports: 1954 Milan Indians basketball team - Indiana High School State Champs - enrollment 161. Some may only know this team through the movie "Hoosiers"
  12. Barb, I know you didn't mean it this way, but saying that "the road we were on was taking us nowhere" is somewhat offensive to former players and coaches who have accomplished so much over the years. Winning back to back conference championships in region 2-4A is a huge accomplishment. Many other teams have been successful over the years doing what most schools are scared to try. Making the playoffs in the top division when only two teams were chosen was a great feat done by teams that could run right through next years 4A division. Noone from Fulton and certainly noone from next years conference could have tackled James Mayes or Dustin Moore among many others. Sorry, I didn't mean to rant, but I do think that it is important to recognize success outside of winning one of the 8 "state championships" in Tennessee. If you judge by previous history and the fact that these two teams compete with the rest of the competition, one might guess that we are somewhere between 20 and 40 points ahead depending on the year, and within two touchdowns about once per decade. Chuckey-Doak (14-0) 1987 W 28-13 1988 W 10-8 1989 W 28-0 1990 W 20-0 1991 W 35-20 1992 W 23-13 1993 W 27-6 1994 W 48-0 1997 W 47-0 1998 W 35-12 1999 W 62-6 2000 W 42-0 2001 W 28-0 2002 W 56-6 South Greene (16-1) 1979 W 19-6 1980 W 12-0 1981 W 15-0 1982 W 17-0 1983 W 28-20 1984 L 0-7 1985 W 28-7 1986 W 40-14 1988 W 36-6 1989 W 33-6 1990 W 39-0 1991 W 42-9 1992 W 33-7 1993 W 40-6 1994 W 48-0 1997 W 33-6 1998 W 42-0
  13. I think they played them at Tusculum once. I kind of doubt that the county schools would agree to always play at Greeneville now that it's a conference game, but you never know. Even though I don't like the conference, part of me will enjoy the return of these two yearly phrases: "This is the year that South Greene beats Greeneville!" and "This is the year that Chuckey Doak beats Greeneville!" and possibly a new one: "This is the year that West Greene beats the spread!" (Hey you gotta work your way up)
  14. Does anyone know how the playoffs will be done? If Fulton improves their 4-6 record and becomes a contender again, we may be playing them in the second round, possibly first. After looking at the 4A teams, if Sullivan East fails to make the playoffs, we would have to play a Knoxville area team in the first round. (Probably Fulton or Carter) If they do make it, I think it will be Sullivan East 1st Round, Fulton second. There are only 4 teams in Districts 1 and 2 combined and they won't all make the playoffs. The playoffs could be kind of strange as the second round vs. Fulton and a semi-final matchup vs. Redbank being the two best opponents (possibly?) These are certainly not great teams, but we may not enjoy the gradually better team type of bracket we've had in the past.
  15. Cumberland Gap and Grainger lost to South Greene this year. Claiborne beat Chuckey Doak 15-14. They are not better, at least not currently.
  16. To be accurate, Greeneville has been playing up for much longer than that. Before 1993, they were playing in the top division(3A) when they should have been in 2A.
  17. This is unfortunate. However, I was glad to see that they will have 4 non-conference games instead of 3. Hopefully they will schedule some better teams.
  18. In 4A the only team Region 1 or Region 2 gets to play is Maryville. Like everyone else they lose. However, the last team to beat Maryville was from region 2, and this was done with far fewer tries than Knoxville area schools. As someone else mentioned, it will be interesting to see what happens next year. Also, many East Tennessee schools are either playing up a division or are playing from the bottom enrollment wise. (Not many 1450 schools) One other thing to mention is the recruiting advantage Knox County Schools have over east Tennessee schools. Without middle school football, kids start playing wherever they want at a young age. When it comes time for high school, a simple transfer request puts them at whichever school is currently the best. Families could also move into the correct zone very easily without having to change jobs.
  19. If people in Greeneville were pressuring the team, it would likely be in the other direction, which they obviously don't need to do. Winning is not the only thing that matters in Greeneville.
  20. This is assuming that Fulton returns back to what they were. This year they posted an impressive 4-6 record. Red Bank is a good team. They are along the same lines as Morristown West, Sullivan South, and TN High over the past few years. The road to get there is the weak point. The best 4A opponent between regions 1 and 2 will probably be 4-6 Sullivan East or maybe a 5-5 Grainger County that lost to South Greene this year. The big winner is Morristown West. With Greeneville and East gone, they should be a heavy favorite to claim a top seed in 5A. Also without Maryville in the way the door has swung open for a region 1 or 2 team to go to state.
  21. If we are placed in region 1, the regions will be completely unbalanced. This is not a big deal for us as we will surely make the playoffs just about every year for the next 50 years. However, Elizabethton, Johnson County, Sullivan North, etc. will have to watch someone like Cumberland Gap plow through the likes of South Greene, Chuckey Doak and West Greene in order to make the playoffs, while they play a much tougher schedule. I don't know if TSSAA even considers those type things though.
  22. Thought I might breakdown the possible future competition: Chuckey Doak: 2008 Record 1-7. Last game vs. Greeneville 56-6 Cumberland Gap: 2008 Record 6-2, but lost to SOUTH GREENE 20-42 South Greene: 2008 Record 4-4. Last game vs. Greeneville 42-0 West Greene: 2008 Record 5-3. Has not played Greeneville, but once scrimmaged the JV Score:GHS JV 5TD's WG Varsity 0 Grainger County: 2008 Record 4-4 with losses to Cherokee, South Greene, etc. Union County: 2008 Record 1-7 Maybe we should call it the IWAC!
