  1. See that purple fin sticking up out of the water . . . it's Milan (Jaws theme plays soft in background). They concern me. If they come to play . . .
  2. I have umped before and I wouldn't want to do the DC-Dyersburg game unless at a neutral site. They did apply the interference rule correctly apparently. I just don't like the way the rule is worded. Could be interpreted by an ump that the kid sliding into second has to come up short so as not to "initiate contact" or go way out of the base path on his slide. As long as a runner comes in spikes low, let him slide to the bag like in pro ball.
  3. It was jesse who started on the mound and then went behind the plate. He's a good kid and a tough kid. If I'm going into a battle, I'd want him on my side. I'm sure he was disappointed in his results on the mound as was chad probably, but to their credit, they both went on and played hard the rest of the game.
  4. I'm sick of hearing what Dyersburg wouldn't do. There were some options that Dyer County wouldn't do. Last night was the fairest date for both schools to play the game. We've played the same number of district games in the past 7 days as you have. DC could have changed senior night to the saturday game against Dickson County. So don't you dare use that as an excuse. Frankly, the loss probably means very little to DC and had no impact on the final district standings and seedings. The win meant something to Dyersburg in that it was the best effort Dyersburg showed this season in terms of having some fire AND composure. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less to either team.

I smell a book deal. . . . Best seller list. People would roll around the aisles of the local Books-A-Million store.
  6. Wow. I guess lightning really can travel a long distance from the storm cell to the contact point.

    Rules

That may be the single worst thing I've heard. You've got to be kidding. I've had some people say stupid things to show they don't have a clue about the rules but that takes the cake!
  8. Right . . . Milan is no sleeper. They are a better team than they showed. Just victimized at times by that peril of so many young players . . . inconsistency. Their series split with Dyersburg is a perfect example. Crockett has been the sleeper that past few years. OK season and they blindside a "better" team or two in the tourney. Wonder if its in the Cavs this year, though. They really had a meltdown at Dyersburg Sunday.
  9. I know you have two very good freshmen. You must have at least one more preferably 2 more really good. Not good, I mean really good. It's just tough when you face some schools who can come up with 4 top notch starters out of a student body of 2,300 or more. Also, those kids have easier access to excellent summer teams such as the Tigers, Dulin's, APAC etc.
  10. Your concern is well founded. There is a lot of moisture in the forecast for the next week and Milan doesn't have a tarp unless they got one in the past few days. Not even sure you'll get your senior night in. Rain is about 70-80 miles away due west as of 11:45 a.m.

    USJ

Ahhh. Another person thinks who the only factor that makes a pitcher tough to hit is velocity. I'm not sure how hard the kid is throwing right now. I've seen his movement on his fastball, his change up and breaking ball. When he gets the offspeed stuff for strikes, you can't sit on the fastball. He's not inviceable, but there's people I'd rather our team have to face for a sub-state berth.
  12. Why was anyone out there when lightning was in the area. Metal fances, light poles (presumably) and metal bats. Somebody needs to be more careful. The last thing I saw was games are to be stopped when lightning is within 5 miles of an athletic field. Hope her incident serves a reminder to everybody. Glad she was not injured. God is Good.
  13. There is a very simply explanation in the Rules of Baseball under Section 2 Definitions, Force out. Apparently the same rule applies to softball. The explanation is very clear and easy to understand. Go to MLB.com under rules.

    USJ

He is a stud and as far as I know a good kid. You're right, though, the key is what else do they have especially on the mound. I know they've got some quality positions players/hitters.
  15. I wonder if the umps in the west part of the state are better than in the east as a group for some reason (experience, background)?? I honestly can't say the ones we've had this year are "bad." There have been some interesting strike zones but as long as they're consistent . . . you really have no gripe. Couple we had in tourney in shelby county were quite good in that they made their calls loud enough that every know-it-all in the stands heard what they're were saying like "batter's out, ball hit him after he left the box." That puts an end to SOME of the "whining" as bbump referred to it.
  16. And if the region isn't tough enough, look who's waiting from the flip side the pounce on you in the sub-state. In a nutshell, you need to be 3-4 deep in quality starters (I mean real top-flight pitchers). Two gems and piece the rest together won't hack it come post season in AAA.

    USJ

I know usj has played a lot of top caliber competition from out of state and some of the big guns in shelby county . . . forget the record . . . how did usj play from a competition standpoint in those games? who is emerging as the go-to-pitchers besides preston?
  18. If the batter truly failed to move, then the ump was wrong. Under the rules of baseball an offensive player interfers if he commits an act that impedes the defensive player. A swing can therefore be considered interference if the ump deems it done for the purpose of impeding the catcher so the coaches who teach that better be careful. If the batter truly did not move, the ump simply misapplied the rule as I read and interpret it. It's in section 2 of the Rules of Baseball.
  19. You've only played 13 games? How many district games have yet to be made up? You're looking at a tough situation real soon.
  20. It's very simple. Put cards with team name in circular patter on the floor. Stand in middle of circle. Grab one foot and hold it while jumping in a counterclockwise direction. Which ever team you head is nearest to when you fall wins the tiebreaker. . . . OK maybe not but my way at least can be understood by people other than math majors.
  21. Cancelled because of district make up games. Had more postponed district games this year than any year i can recall for quite a while.
  22. Shelby County has several very strong baseball teams this year and while Bartlett may not be dominant. The West Tn school i support has played some and been in tourney down there and seen some of them. It may be one of the strongest years overall in terms of lots of talent and it would seem very difficult for one or two or even three schools to dominate. Just an outsider's opinion.
  23. Darn, wish I'd thought of that!!!!!!!
  24. Besides Walkoff, you can't skip district games.
