  1. Well I agree to an extent but this player leads all rushers and is from a program that has produced four Mr Football award winners and three state championships. Its not like the kid is from an unknown school playing bad competition. He's a known commodity by two thirds of the state.

    Memphis had three kids? Really?

    1. Enlighten the 1/3 of the state where he isn't a "known commodity" as to the identity of "Walker" and the "unknown school."  I'm  assuming he's on a II-A team in middle or east TN

    2. Just as I know nothing about "Walker" do you know anything about the the 3 Memphis players?  Needless to say, they have impressive stats too.

  2. All the same that region played 7 games against 1A or 2A teams.

You know how many games the rest of 6A played against 1A or 2A teams? One game.

    Region 1 - 1 against 2A and 1 against 3A and 2 against 4A

    Region 2 - None against 1A or 2A and 4 against 3A.

    Region 3 - None against 1A, 2A or 3A. And only 3 against 4A. So 27 non-region games against either 5A or 6A.

Personally, if I were a 6A team supporter, I wouldn't want to be playing any 1A-2A teams unless it were Trezevant.  It would be pointless.  However, in the pitiable case of Bartlett, it allows them to win a few games.  In the case of Whitehaven, their game with Mitchell is a neighborhood matchup.  There are 8 6A teams in West Tennessee, all in metro Memphis.  For them to play a NC 6A game would require somebody doing some traveling across the TN River.  Metro Nashville has 13 6A teams, Middle TN 16, so there are ample opportunities to schedule a NC 6A opponent.  Moreover, I believe there are more 5A teams in middle and east TN also, but I could be wrong.  In any case, if you exclude Bartlett, there are 7 teams playing 4 1A-2A teams.

You can make of that what you will.  IMO, I don't find it very remarkable.

  3. Looking at the teams from that west region earlier today it really stuck out to me how many of them played 1A-2A teams for their non-region games. I haven't seen too much of that from the teams in this area.

There are 8 teams in Region 8AAAAAA.  Bartlett was by far the worst even though it is the largest school in Memphis.  As pointed out, all 3 of their NC games, and their only wins, were against 1A-2A.  MJ can name their score against them.

However, 4 of the 8 (Collierville, Germantown, Houston and White Station) played no games against 1A-2A, Arlington played 2, Cordova and Whitehavenj each played 1.  That's 7 out of 30 NC games vs 1A-2A.  Thus your statement is not very accurate.

  4. if MUS loses to CBHS creating a 3 way tie for 1st with Briarcrest, the Owls still are #1 seed due to tie breaker rule of best overall record.

It was pointed out on another blog that CBHS CAN finish #1 if they beat MUS and St Benedict beats Briarcrest.   Yeah.  And H*** could freeze over tonight too....

  5. This playoff scenario created by silverpie, which is pretty impressive, allows for the possibility of CBHS winning the region, but only if St. Benedict beats Briarcrest.

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/60064029/Deep_tiebreaks_2016-10.html

I've seen St. Benedict play, so maybe everyone is just assuming they will lose?  Ha.  So, the seeds should be:

    1. MUS

    2. Briarcrest

    3. CB

    4. St. Benedict

There's a lot riding on the final games in the E/M division.  MBA will be #1.  If BA beats McCallie, BA is #2, Ensworth #3 and McCallie #4.  If Ensworth beats MBA, Ensworth will either be #2 or #3.

Well, podner. he is absolutely correct.  If St Benedict beats Briarcrest and CBHS beats MUS, then CBHS would be #1.   However, if I looked up and saw SB over BCS, I would start looking for shelter from a falling sky and finding a down parka to wear in heck....

    P.S.  Can't believe that H*** is a censored word.....

  6. Tell your friend I think he's all that I said earlier and a buster and loser for doing what he did. Idc how you feel about him and if he has a different paint job than me then WE KNOW WHY HE DID WHAT HE DID!

I repeat.  He warned the players repeatedly and was ignored.  Then he enforced the known rules.  He did his job.  Sorry the RULES got in the way of your player's comfort.  YOU are the "loser" and the "hole"  As usual, you are playing the race card.  Skin color has NOTHING to do with violating rules and enforcing rules.  Had the GTown players been stupid enough to pull the same BS, I can guarantee they would have gotten the flags also.  You are truly pathetic.

  7. I understand your sentiment. Just know this. That very same game, the White Hat tried to eject the principal of the school. That's right, he tried to eject Dr. Hunter. Dr. Hunter followed the lead of his HC and left the sidelines voluntarily .. but he was HOT! He later penned a letter to the office of the TSSAA and let them know about the shenanigans that was going on.

That being stated ... Whitehaven doesn't feel like we are being oppressed nor do we feel like we are being persecuted continually. When you are a student or alum from the Haven, you learn to be the cream at a very early stage in life. (The cream always rises to the top) You can't afford to look at life as if persecution is a burden. That's how you become defeated. You learn that through hard work, dedication, and commitment,  to persevere, in spite of.

Winners win (life, football, whatever) ... that's what they do. It is a learned behavior. It is something that you teach and pass down to the next generation. There will always be obstacles. You just overcome them.

Let's be totally accurate.  The principal came ONTO THE FIELD and CONFRONTED THE REF WHO TOLD HIM TO GET OFF THE FIELD.  He had NO business being on the field.  The ref has the authority to "eject" any school official who is on the field in violation of TSSAA rules.  The ref was ENFORCING RULES.  That's his responsibility.  He did not throw the first flag until repeated warnings had been ignored.  The complaint to the TSSAA was without merit and the ref was COMPLETELY EXONERATED.  I bet you were unaware that 3 TSSAA official supervisors were in attendance at the game and witnessed the "shenanigans" in person.  I would be surprised if Whitehaven didn't receive some official reprimands from the TSSAA.

What do you think is going to happen in any game where BS like this happens?  You think players can in effect tell the ref to go "f" himself and get away with it?  You think coaches and principals should confront refs in this manner?  You think the Haven players and staff were "targeted" unfairly?  If so, think again.   It is rare that players or teams violate the "shirttail rule" but when they do it is enforced.  Brentwood Academy players tried this in a big match up with Ensworth several years ago but had the sense to comply after the first 2 flags.  BA staff had the sense not to confront the refs over enforcing a known rule.  But that didn't stop the fans from crying they were "targeted" by "Brentwood hating refs."

  8. All that being said, dude that did that is likely a real life a hole that doesn't deserve to ref another Whitehaven game ever.

That "dude" is a personal friend of mine and considered one of the top refs in the state.  He is also an extremely successful businessman and a leader in his church and in the community.  There IS a "shirttail rule" and he REPEATEDLY warned the Tiger players about it and was ignored.  The reason nobody has ever heard about a HC ejection is probably because none has ever been so stupid as to let it go that far.  I understand some 'Haven administrator even went onto the field to confront the ref.  Obviously he thinks like you.

  9. The above statement is correct:  MUS is #1 seed regardless of outcome vs CBHS.

I have seen all the D2AA teams play.  Whatever poll has MUS as #3 in D2AA is accurate IMO.  Their defense has been excellent, but they just lost arguably their best D player for the season.  Still the D is stout.  However, I'm not confident they can stop MBA's stud RB nor BA's stud QB.  Moreover, their offense is average for D2AA, and their starting QB has been out for a month with a shoulder injury.   Even if he is healthy for the playoffs, he is not a threat to run, and his passing is streaky.  MUS has had problems establishing a running game, so they can't afford for him to have a bad night passing.  MUS' kicking game is excellent as usual.

  10. SM ratings only include games versus other TN schools.  This can have a negative effect on

Division 2AA schools that play out of state competition, especially against strong opposition.  CBHS (#45) beat one of the better teams in Ohio and lost to one of the best in Missouri.  MUS at 7-0 is #49 even though they sit atop the AP state poll.  They have played 3 MS teams and beaten Granada, a top 10 5A team, and South Panola, who admittedly are down this year.  The Nashville teams that play Trinity KY don't get credit for it.   Food for thought....

  11. Illegal Batting Rule states (Rule 9-7)

ART. 1... No player shall intentionally kick the ball other than as a free or scrimmage kick.

ART. 2... No player shall bat a loose ball other than a pass or a fumble in flight, or a low scrimmage kick in flight which he is attempting to block in or behind the expanded neutral zone.

Great play! Don't think it should have happened.

It WAS a pass so article 2 states it was legal. Moreover, I asked a local official and he verified the play was legal.

  12. What current or formerly white schools in Memphis don't have on-campus fields?

If you answer this question truthfully you may see how the omission, when it was done and even now today, is racism working. It works so well that you may Honestly be blind to it because "that's just how it is" in your head.

Is this really a serious question?   I thought we were talking about stadiums not fields.  And the biggest one obviously is White Station.  But there are many others.

Look.  This is really stupid.  You obviously are going to drag this BS out forever and must have the last word.   You are one of those people who sees racism behind every corner, because it promotes your agenda.  Go ahead and stew in your racial animus.  I'm out of here.  Just try not to let it spill out again in the postseason, as it has before.  It really diminishes your pro-school message.

  13. Before Whitehaven became what it is now (Predominately Black) it was a Predominately White school with a stadium. You are attempting to do a "chicken or the egg" argument, knowingly or unknowingly, when you can't. In reality The Stadium was built when it wasn't integrated.

ALL of the former county league schools were "lily white" because they were built before desegregation.  That does NOT mean that they had stadiums BECAUSE they were white.  They all had stadiums because they all had football teams and would have nowhere to play if they didn't.  These schools originally were way out in the country.   By your "logic" I could claim that any pre desegregation black school that has a stadium was because it was "ebony black."   Has anybody tried to tear down the Whitehaven stadium since it became "predominantly black?"  Did you not get a turf field?  Where's all this alleged racism?

  14. Some people hate different opinions with facts backing it up. Mind you I said OPINION but I have historical evidence that can be pointed out that makes my opinion highly credible even though there's ONE buster that's attempting to go out their way to show how "racist, ignorant and off base " I am. Keep reaching

I am not ignorant of historical context.  I just don't see it applying in this case.  You have no facts backing up your assertion that racism was involved in the selection of which schools got on campus stadiums, certainly not in your lifetime.  Just because racism exists doesn't mean it exists in this situation, and regardless of your personal experience with it, real or perceived, it does not give you license to make a gratuitous accusation of racism on the public/government officials - many of whom no doubt are black - who decide where stadiums get built.  Just because some black school doesn't have an on campus stadium but you opine that it should, doesn't mean the omission was racist in origin.  What about the white schools that don't have stadiums?  You are way off base here.  Pick a better battlefield.  Besides this is supposed to be a blog about HS football, not a personal forum for BS like this.

  15. To assume it's not racism is a great disregard of this city's history. But white folks tend to have incorrect or ignorant historical context ,so it's cool.

Also, in reality, Whitehaven was lily white, so I can't see how you can reach the way you did by saying I'm being racist by saying we wouldn't have a stadium on-campus had it not been lily white. That's a factual statement due to real life.

It is an IRRATIONAL and RACIST postulation that Whitehaven would not have a stadium had it not formerly been a white school.   That's LUDICROUS.   It is THE premier public school football power.  It is NOT Hamilton.  Of course it would have its own stadium.

  16. Whitehaven, 4-0 in Region 4-6A, hosts Bartlett, 0-4 in region play. Whitehaven beat White Station last week by a score of 20-14. Barlett lost to Germantown by a score of 48-13. Whitehaven has to remain focused and not take Bartlett for granted. Bartlett has nothing to lose and would love to come to The Haven and play spoiler. How do we see this one playing out?

Whitehaven can name the score.  Nolo contendere

  17.

After reading your complete post, you are CLUELESS to even think I got any type of hatred towards anyone. I am bitter as heck tho. It's because of the outright inequality and injustice that "good white folks" like yourself are oblivious and/or willfully ignorant to. The only reason there is a "city" and "county" separation is/was a racist thing. Your perspective isn't mine, so in your opinion owlbooster you see hatred and unnecessary bitterness, well my friend you just don't understand and I'm not one of those black folks that has time to explain the issues to those who don't want to see it. I'm just pointing out how it loOKs from my side. The End.

The original question which led to your rant was from an apparent Nashville resident who questioned why so many games were being played at off campus sites.  You seized upon this to assert that it was because some black schools (sic Hamilton) didn't have stadiums and you attributed this to racism, disregarding the fact that there were even more white schools (sic White Station) that also didn't have stadiums.  Neither you nor I know anything about the actual historical decision making, but you chose to assume that racism was involved because that's the way you think..  You went so far as to postulate that Whitehaven wouldn't even have a stadium today had it not originally been "lily white."  That is a totally racist and highly divisive thing to post, very offensive to citizens like me, and the reason I responded.  The End.

  18. I will go from the bottom up responding to your rhetoric as I can see you feel attacked whenever I mention race... I know why you do, but it's cool, I see you..

The FACT that I went to Whitehaven and have seen All of the senior head pictures from the 30s until now seeing how they were lily white up until the 70s and started turning into what Da Haven is today in the mid 80s I am an expert in knowing that the only reason Whitehaven has an on campus stadium is because it was once lily white thus my charge of Racism is on point. That's not the race card, that's fact jack.

I find it funny that you can look at the Suburban schools and privates like yourself, CBHS, heck even Bishop Byrnes having their own fields since forever probably but Hamilton, Northside, Trezevant, etc not having their own fields ever as just a school size thing. Mayne, Hamilton used to be the big black school on Elvis Presley. There is a baseball field behind their school that I practiced pee wee football on. It had lights and small baseball bleachers but it wasn't Hamilton's home field ,ever... why? I charge racism. And I'm probably right.

It is utterly ridiculous that money always seems to run out when it comes to our kids. Money is not an issue in the suburbs or the private schools but when it comes to public facilities and public works for US it's not financially feasible for the is that and the third. Nah, bruh, that is racism 101. Red lining, block busting, gerrymandering are all things done supposedly because it's what's best for the whole but what's best for the so-called whole always seems to not benefit US in this city. No sir, I'll call it how I see it. Not to mention I gave a way to make the grounds keeping and such not be a money thing. Get students in a vocational program to learn the science of landscaping. Hire or contract a teacher / lawn care service to teach the kids how to do the job. Only pay them during the summer when out of school. Let them earn credit while in school. The lights and bleachers can be gifted if that's an issue. Some philanthropist out here would give that money. Stop with your rhetoric that's anti-me sir. I know what the issues are from my side and I'll speak on them from my perspective and you do the same.

    To wrap it up,

    RESPECT DA HAVEN

You are always looking  to inject race into any discussion and your words are full of hatred and bitterness.   It's always black vs white.  It's Blackhaven not Whitehaven. It's who you are and it's people like you who are the reason that there will never be racial harmony in Memphis.

Whitehaven has a stadium because it was originally a COUNTY school and ALL of them had stadiums NOT because they were "lily white" but because they were in the country, far outside the old city limits, and there was nowhere else to play.  All of them were "lily white" because of segregation.

I don't know why Hamilton doesn't have a stadium but I don't assume it is racism. I do know Hamilton is not far from Crump.  Maybe that had something to do with it.  Northside is a post integration school just a few miles north of Crump so certainly there's no reason for them  to have a stadium.  I'm pretty sure Trezevant was relatively small when built.  But for whatever reasons, it is IN THE PAST.

As another blogger pointed out,  White Station has always been a large predominantly white school and it has no stadium.  Parochial and private schools have stadiums because they build them with their own funds.  All of the former county schools were built with county not city funds.  The trend during your lifetime has been to build facilities that serve multiple schools.  That is fiscally responsible.

  19. @ FBfan26

I think it's as ridiculous as you do. Not only is it ridiculous I am starting to believe it Was racially motivated back in the day. Whitehaven has it's own field as it was once a predominately white Suburban school before the 1970s. The only traditional Black schools that have their own fields are Booker T. Washington and Melrose (Southwind too I guess but see the caveat at the end) and as K-Dub said Melrose Stadium is walking distance (maybe a little less than a mile) but off of the campus nonetheless. Westwood used to have their own stadium but by the time I started playing in the early 2000s I believe that it had been long gone. There are numerous Traditional Black schools that have a space for an on-campus field which is normally where they practice (bleachers and light poles would be needed) but for some weird reason (Racist in my humble opinion) they have never been given the resources to build them up. Not only that, it seems as if no one asks 'why not'? Except me.

Sports help build community pride in a school not to mention the fundraising opportunities that come from having your own field and track if possible but in Memphis their are far too many programs that have travel to "HOME" games. If I ever get in front of the right people I'll ask the question 'why not?' Why not give Trezevant or Hamilton their own real Home Field? Why not allow them to give jobs to some students to tend the grounds to learn a trade that gives them real life experience and the ability to work for themselves upon graduation? Why must the "city" schools that are Traditionally Black continue sharing when there is space to put up  2-4 poles and 500-1000 seat bleachers and simply MOVE the games to bigger fields if the coaches/ADs think the match up dictates such? It doesn't seem like rocket science but again I think I know EXACTLY why Memphis has this issue and I am willing to change it if/when I get into a position to change it.

Sorry for the rant but it is what it is.

p.s.  Crump which is Central's Home field was also a former Traditionally White school, along with Kirby and Oakhaven I am sure was also a former Traditionally White school as well as Raleigh-Egypt ... That's why they currently have on-campus fields... Southwind was built to take a significant Middle Class and Upper Middle Class Black population away from Germantown High. They are the only newer school I can think of that has a stadium that wasn't Traditionally White at any time.

That is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Memphis of you to claim that RACISM is behind the location of prep football stadiums.  And not unexpected coming from you.  You have presumed that racism is the reason beforehand then sought stats to support your assumption, and the only one you can find is "predominantly white school" either now or before.  That line falls apart when you consider that many if not most of the historically black high schools no longer exist and some of them as I recall did not have football teams.   It appears to me that the SIZE of the school was a large factor but also proximity to existing stadiums.  The biggest reason would be COSTS - both construction, maintenance and utilities.  The schools do NOT have unlimited funds.  The facilities at the Fairgrounds, Halle and Crump/Central (et al on site) were meant to serve more than one school. for economic reasons.   Concerning Whitehaven, ALL of the former Shelby County League schools had stadiums and ALL were predominantly (exclusively before integration) white.  Germantown and Bartlett were fairly close to Collierville and Bolton respectively and had bigger stadiums because they were bigger schools.  I recommend you contact some knowledgeable official within the school system to discuss the whys and wherefores of stadium location and not be so eager to play the "race card"

BTW, I could be wrong, but I don't recall Westwood ever having an on campus stadium, but logically they should have had one, as it predated Freeman.  Nonetheless, this school was built in the mid-60s and like most of the new schools built after integration (e.g. Hillcrest) was originally predominantly white.  The movement of urban blacks over the last 50 years has predominantly been southward, which is why Whitehaven, Westwood and Hillcrest are now predominantly black.  To imply that Whitehaven has its own stadium only because it was once a predominantly white school is in itself a racist statement.

  20. owlbooster You edited your post and added the Margaret Thatcher quote.  She never would have wasted $600,000/year on a HS coach.  She was a conservative.

Margaret Thatcher would NOT have told a private prep school that they were overpaying it's AD/FB/BBall coach and advised them to pay him less.  You are a clueless liberal who doesn't even know the difference between a liberal and a conservative.  It has nothing to do with how much you spend but rather with who determines how the money is spent.  Conservatives believe they know best how to spend their own money.  Liberals think other people are too stupid or uninformed to know how best to spend their money and need their enlightened guidance to tell them how to spend it, or even worse, to spend it for them.  Hence, your admonishment to Ensworth to not "waste" all that money on Bowers but rather pay him only $150,000 and do something better with the remaining $450,000.  And I'm sure you also would love to tell them where best to spend it.  And I would love to tell you where to shove the entire $600,000.

Frankly, I think $600,000 is a heckuva big salary for any HS staff member.  But he is the best at what he does, that's what Ensworth thinks he is worth, and it really is their money.  There are a lot of people in all walks of life that I think are overcompensated or undercompensated.. That's my opinion.  Employers pay their employees what THEY - not Ironman or I - think they are worth.  If the employee doesn't doesn't like it, he can sell his services elsewhere.  That's how things work in a free society.

  21. You are avoiding the point.  It is not only “their moneyâ€.  It is only partially “their moneyâ€.  If it was only “their moneyâ€, they would not have to file public financial statements.

    Let it rest.

The late great Margaret Thatcher said, "Liberals are great at spending other peoples' money...until they run out of it."  I am the one that called you a flaming liberal and that's exactly what you are, precisely for the reason RedRobin stated.   And how elitist of you to proclaim whether anybody gets compensated too much (or too little) for what they do.

Private schools get a considerable amount of their working capital from private donors and the endowments they create.  By your twisted logic, because these are tax deductible contributions, these really are forced contributions by taxpayers like you, and thus your basis for complaint.   Thus, any institution, organization, business, whatever, that benefits from a tax deduction is fair game for your scrutiny.  That's virtually all of them, and if they are a private non government entity they can spend THEIR money HOWEVER they choose.  If I give my church $1,000,000 and we choose to pay our minister $600,000 annual salary, or if I give $1,000,000 to St Jude and they pay their head administrator $600,0000 salary, it is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.  You act as if I've taken $500,000 away from the government, as if it were THEIR money.  IT IS NOT.  IT IS MINE because I earned it NOT because it is what the government has allowed me to keep. More power to all charitable givers who see to it that as much of THEIR hard earned dollars are spent where THEY want it spent and not by a profligate out-of-control wasteful federal government.

Please crawl back under that rock on the public school threads from whence you emerged.  You will find no comfort on the D2 thread.  Everybody here knows what it means to make our own choices of what to do with OUR money in a FREE country.

  22. According to CoachT, Ridgeway won that game by a 14 point margin of victory. But hey, that was last year.

Yes it was 14 points.  I was operating from memory.  The final score was 28-14.  MUS dug themselves a 14 point hole early, then was about to cut it to 14-7 but instead threw an interception and Ridgeway went ahead 21-0.  The Owls never recovered fully obviously.  FWIW it is the only time Ridgeway has beaten MUS in 11 tries.

Curiously, the Owls dug themselves a 14-0 hole in the first minute tonight after only 2 plays from scrimmage.  However, it has been all MUS since, and is 30-14 at half.  The starting QB for MUS was knocked out in the first quarter.  The Owls shifted to an all running offense from  their usual pass dominated offense and Ridgeway has had no answer.
