  1. CSAS is very quick on both sides of the court and put a lot of pressure on the opponent. District 14 is a tough district to advance to state from. A lot of good teams advance from there. I am sure CSAS isn't overlooking the first round.

  2. It was an exciting game and a great reminder of how important defense is when the shots aren't falling. Congratulations A & S! I look forward to watching you guys play at the state. Bring that hardware home.

  3. CSAS comes into the game 27-4 while FCS is 23-5. Not real sure about the quality of FCS's competition, but I know CSAS has played some tough competition. CSAS has only lost to AA teams, 3 of the 4 losses are to teams who are still playing (Howard, Tyner, East Literature). CSAS's only loss at home is to Tyner in OT during the Best of Preps Tournament. CSAS has defeated every Single A team they have faced by double digits, by an average of 29 points. All of that to say this... If CSAS comes to play FCS won't win, BUT if CSAS doesn't play well it could be interesting.

P.S. No gym rocks like 3rd Street will be rocking on Monday night!

    True!

  4. I believe if FCS plays the way they did tuesday night when they demolished Clarkrange 51 to 27 they have a very good chance to not only play with CSAS but a very good chance to beat them.. what do you think?

Congratulations to FCS for making it to a substate game but I think the dores will be going home empty handed after a lopsided loss.

  5. Lookout Valley will travel to Celina Monday night to take on the Clay County Bulldogs. I don't know a lot about Lookout. Does anybody have knowledge of both of these teams? I've gotta feel good about the Bulldogs chances playing at home. What are yalls thoughts?

I don't know much about Clay other than what I have seen in the past years. But, LV is a team that has been typically weak in the past that has really shined brightly this year in a region that is not as strong as it has been in recent season. LV is a patient, physical team. They will not shoot the lights out but they will control the ball well. They have a big man down low who is very effective and productive. All the starters are very athletic and the team seems to have a good chemistry with each other. It should be a good match up. I coudl see it being a close game going either way but I would have to give Clay a slight edge because of LV's long travel and Clay's home court advantage. Clay's gym is a tough place to play with loud fans and strong community support.

  6. From what I saw Van Buren played the game not to get blown out. They put 5 guys in the paint and dared CSAS to shoot, which they did and made it. That plan might have worked last year against the Pats but not this year. They have 4-5 players who can knock it down from outside. CSAS will beat Lookout Valley by 20+.

I agree. Congratulations to LV for making it to the big game but I cannot see them even keeping it close. They will try to control the clock and limit CSAS' possessions but with all the outside shooting the Pats have, it shouldn't have a dramatic effect on the outcome.

I don't remember LV ever making it this far. Conratulations to them and maybe they can pull off an on the road substate game and see their season extended just a little farther.

We would love to see CSAS bring home some gold hardware from the Murphy Center.

  7. I'm not sure but I don't think there is a "round". The "rounds" would be the district tournaments. I think it just starts with the quarterfinals at Signal, according to how you finished in the districts.

I had noticed that all the first round/quarter final games listed on the region bracket at www.jim314.com started at the same time, while the semi-finals games were listed at different times.

  8. Silverdale looked good last night against Zion Christian. They went into the fourth quarter down 27-7. All game long it seemed that the breaks were going the other way and then the wind changed direction. The momentum all seemed to change when the QB finally connected on a TD pass making it 27-13. Shay Prescott caught a 2 point conversion pass. I cannot remember the order of things but it seemed that after the ensueing kick, SBA's defense stuffed #44 two times in a row and then Shay Prescott sacked the quarterback and forced a fumble. Somewhere in there the Seahawks created a safety. Silverdale made it a close game just a few minutes into the fourth quarter. Zion seemed to have a few more playmakers but SBA stuck to their guns, maintained composure, and took advantage of the late opportunities when they presented themselves. Zion seemed to be out of gas into the fourth quarter. By the way, SBA's #3 was a stud.

  9. So much for the argument given on here that nearly all athletes at private schools were there through the middle school years or even elementary years. It's clear there will be transfers including at public schools, just look on this site in the girls' basketball topics especially midstate schools. The problem here, as mentioned, was Hamilton not-so-subtly encouraging athletes to "come on down", or "come on up" if they're still targeting Dalton (beyond the 20 mile zone, so they wouldn't have to sit out).

Indian, the argument has not changed. Private schools exist because kids transfer from other schools at all ages, not just high school. My statement about transfers was focused on the non-high school grades...

I was not aware of a lot of transfers in public schools because of zoning issues.

  10. Bigbird, you're back! We hadn't heard from you since before the tourney. I was fearing our horrible performance in the championship game had left you totally shattered and hopeless.

Not totally shattered... I admit it was hard to see us play such good defense against Manassas and lose the game because we could not hit the broad side of a barn.

  11. Earlier on this thread, the word was that he was "throwing elbows." He apparently did it once and was warned, then continued the same behavior. Opinion seems to be mixed as to whether or not it was a technical worthy offense.

With all the reportedly bad behavior, I am surprised he got Mr. Basketball, but I guess that decision is based on more than the tournament performance. He is clearly an impressive player.

I may be mistaken but the Mr. Basketball is determined before the tournament even starts. It is lucky for Buckner that class and character are not part of the qualifications...

  12. The announcement said he was disqualified from the game. Nothing was said about an ejection. Apparently there is a difference between the two.

Temple did not go man to man. When Reginald was taken out of the game Manassas spread the floor and started running the clock down.

It looked to me on t.v. that they could have got him for a couple more techs for throwing elbows and pushing on the Temple players after he would score.

Not to mention spitting on one of our players...

  13. My contention is the statement that Temple would only be a .500 team in other districts. When you look at region 7 & 8, most of the teams are way below .500 and never have a chance at going to the tourney. There are not 40 teams fighting each other every year to make it. There are only two or three from each region, just like ours.

On the discussion about the Skogens, do not forget that Temple was strong before they came. When they won the silver in 1998 it was a 42-44 loss in 2OT, probably one of the best teams Temple has had. There is no dispute that having a boat load of Skogens was beneficial to Temple.

  14. In 2006, Temple and Grace played each other twice in the regular season, at the Best of Preps Tournament, district and region championships. Grace went on that year to finish runner up to Union City after beating Humboldt in the semis. Temple came back next year and won the state title.

If Temple and Grace both win their semis, it will happen again this year, two regulars, district and region championships, and the finals.

  15. Well... There are four teams left and if you listen too hard to some of the west teams, there were at least six underdogs at the tournament, so I would not feel too sorry for myself.

Summertown looked like a very good team yesterday. I think they may give Temple a game tomorrow but I do not think they will win. Temple will do what it takes to win tomorrow.

  16. Bigbird you should just become a Grace fan. You sound more like one everyday!!

I am a Temple fan, of course, but any open minded, honest fan of baskeball cannot help but appreciate how Grace is playing right now. I never saw a Grace game before the 2006 season and as far as I can tell the Golden Eagles are playing as well or better then that team.

  17. They won by 23 not 19. Final was 79-56.

Have to give props to Grace Baptist. Knox hit 9 3's in 1st half and somehow found themselves still down by 6 at halftime. Fact of the matter was that if Knox went cold or were played tighter on the perimeter they were going to get blown out.

Second half starts and GB scores first and then Knox #23 gets his 3rd foul so things are looking up for GB. A matter of a few seconds later and Shaughnessy gets his 3rd so now both of those guys are sitting. Knox scores the next 6 and the momentum begins to shift.

But then...Brown takes 2 charges before the end of the quarter and the next thing you know Grace is up 8 again.

I think that 3rd quarter showed how mentally tough GB is and the 4th quarter showed how they can blow a team out when everything is clicking.

Manassas/GB should be very entertaining. I know people wanted to see Humboldt/Manassas for the finals, but i personally think the remaining 3 games will be just as quality of matchups as that one was...just maybe without an entire season's worth of hype behind it.

    Well said!

  18. Well... Now back to the original subject:

Between Manassas and Grace, I think that Grace wins this one. Judging from the way the west teams have been overlooking everyone in the state to the gold ball, they will not come out fully prepared to play Grace and will find themselves digging out of a deep hole early. I know the coaches will not overlook them but if the players themselves have the same attitude as the fans who post on here, it is going to be ugly (sorry).

As far as Summertown and Temple: Summertown and Clarksville matched well against each other yesterday. Summertown is a very disciplined team and I am sure that they will have a good defensive plan for Temple. I do not think that Summertown matches up well against Temple, personally. However, neither team should overlook the other or a disaster will occur. I have to give Temple the edge in this game.

  19. Also I heard that Buckner was 6'9''... I walked by him on the way out yesterday and he might, might have been 6'8'' with big sole shoes on...

Yes. With all the fluff on the boards this season about what a giant Buckner was, I fully expected to see some 400 lb man that stood 2 ft taller than everyone else. I had to get someone to point him out to me. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

  20. Speaking as a uninterested, TSSAA patch-wearing spectator of the Humboldt-Manassas game, all the charges were spot on. Manassas would set up for at least 2 seconds and would be promptly run over. The officials did a great job of in that game. It was good to see a Region 3 official out there making his association look good.

I thought most of the charges were "spot on" also. I just thought there were an unusual amount considering how few there seem to be in Chattanooga. In one game, I thought I saw maybe 7 or 8 charges and I thought only about 1 of them was a wrong call.

  21. Let me make my earlier statement clear. Once these teams made it to the Boro you can take the schedules and throw them out the window! This game and it's outcome had absolutely nothing to do with the schedules these two teams played this year. Neither team played a game during the year that compares in any way to the opening game of the state tournament. An outstanding shot was made and a Great team won! End of story!! Even with the poor free throw shooting and all the turnovers it came down to one shot. All the schedules in the world can't prepare anyone for a 3 pointer with mere seconds left to tie or win a game. Those kids aren't thinking about what they did 6 weeks ago to win a close game. The adrenaline kicks in & your instincts take over.

    Well, you have certainly made yourself clear /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

In my opinion, everyone of us draws from past successes and failures and we learn from them. What we learn from the past shapes our present. Some people handle adversity well because they learn how to handle it from being in adverse situations. I thought Humboldt was actually the better team today but the difference in winning or losing was about composure. Manassas had more composure in the pressure situation. It was a tougher schedule that helped them be able to have that composure and mental toughness.

  22. There were definitely more charges called today than I'm used to. I think that's a sign that the players have more of desire to do what it takes to win the game now that the gold ball and the season are on the line. 2 players that I saw do prob the best job stepping in and "taking one for the team" were jonathon brown for grace baptist and buckner for manassas. these 2 guys combined for 9 charges taken! These are players willing to do what it takes...and good calls by the refs too ha

    Buckner was very good flopper, wasn't he? /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
