  1. I, too, am glad that you aren't going to mention LA's playoff scores this decade. I'm even happier you aren't going to list the scores from the last 3 regular seasons...that wouldn't be good. The '74 and '04 teams were both really good along with several others throughout the years ('54, '66, '92, '96, '97, '05). You can't really argue which team was the best because they all played at different times against different teams. They all were lucky enough to have both good coaches and good players. There are people who have played on any one of these teams that will argue that their squad was better than the other but it's all argumentative. For any team to win it all they'll need great play along with unbelievable luck (unless you're Alcoa) and that's what the '05 team benefited from. Any one of those other teams could've won the state as well if the ball bounced a little different hear and there. As for Maynard, I believe he's one of the greatest coaches in the area. He is well respected and wins games the right way. I've always enjoyed watching his teams play and feel like he'll reach 105 easily within the next 2 seasons.
  2. If this is true then that's a very nice hire for the Blue Devils. That program needs stability more than anything and I think Coach Loftis will give them just that being a hometown guy. I wish the Blue Devils luck in the upcoming years and maybe we can schedule each other in the near future. I think both programs are on the rise!
  3. 1. hahah...If you want to name actual championships that would be, as you said, too long to list. I think we all know I was talking about Football Championships, which I believe, you have zero. 2. Allons, maybe. Livingston Academy, most definitely. 3. Let me remind you, you lost to Boyd Buchanon in '05 and they were put out in a route the very next round. I'm glad you think LA should have more than 1 title. I think you guys would've won one this decade too if you could've only gotten past Meigs Co., Trousdale Co. (twice), Macon Co., Knox. Fulton, Boyd Buchanon, Alcoa, York, and/or Marion Co.
  4. What a funny, funny guy!! I just can't resist this one... To be fair and answer your questions: 1. Smith Co. 2. Smith Co. 3. Uh, Smith Co. Now it's your turn to answer these questions you jocular little man!! 1. When was your last State Championship? 2. Where is your current coach from? (you know, the second winningest coach in Smith Co. history - 86 wins (14 playoff wins) with a win pct. of 77%) 3. Which teams made it past the 2nd Round in '05? (I'll give you a hint...there were 40 of them and 5 went on to win State Championships that year!!)
  5. Agree. Lots of good information has been passed from one person to another throughout this thread. I feel as though each supporter has shared good information and grown in their passion for the 'Cats. I look forward to many more exchanges of ideals and philosophies in the upcoming months.
  6. Those should definitely be the top 4 in some order. That would leave everybody's lovable losers, Upperman & Cannon Co., to fill in the bottom two spots. Should make for some very interesting District play. I just hope we can finish ahead of DeKalb Co. and lock in a playoff birth.
  7. They'll need lots of size to compete in the new District. I predict them to finish no better than 6th and no worse than, well, 6th. They'll be the bottom feeders of the new District and I'm pretty sure everyone knows it.
  8. This conversation has just went a little overboard. That statement was completely uncalled for. Just because York has provided stiff competition over the last couple of years does not mean that you need to comment on how hard it is to live in Jamestown.
  9. Size of players or size of school's they're competing with? I've read on some other posts that they lost a lot of Sr's and some overall team speed, but many in Woodbury think that their semi-new Coach is got things going in the right direction. I can't remember a time in my life when they were very competitive for an extended period of time.
  10. There's a lot of talk lately coming from Cannon Co. How much will they play into the District standings? I don't think the 'Cats will have any problems with them but will other teams in the District? The person/people he was talking to!!
  11. May have been a punk, but he was a great player and team leader.
  12. There's no doubt Coach Webb has a great football mind. I once heard him tell some people that he had "forgotten more football than you'll ever know." I'm not sure if that's true or not but he does know his stuff. I agree with you on the last part as well. If you have 3 Assts or 15 Assts it doesn't really matter as long as they are good teachers. The guys that make up the staff at LA right now fit this mold perfectly. They are good at teaching their positions as well as helping with others. There's a plethora of knowledge at LA right now and you should see great things happening in the near future.
  13. I'm sure I've ran into you over the years. Especially if you have been at the York games. I remember McCoin setting the LA record for passing yards against them in the early '80's and Spencer Beatty & Co. beating our '92 squad. There have been great games over the years between these squads, and I'm sure '09 will be no different.
  14. Not sure what you're yodeling, but I'm sure it's interesting. Coach Hubert does deserve a chance but it's going to be hard following what Derwin was able to do over the last several years. Hound, I go through York at least twice a week and I'm not sure what you're talking about in regards to teeth. But, I'm sure we don't hang out at the same places!!
  15. Speaking of York, what's the deal up on the Mountain. I've heard that Wright may take back over that program. If he doesn't who will? No coach for an extended period of time may be just what LA needs to top the Dragons in '09. I'm with you Hound & Chair, I would like to see the Lizards lose every game they play. Unfortunately that hasn't been the case the last 2 years, but I think, as Bob Dylan once said, The Times They Are A-Changin'!!!
  16. I'll tell you exactly who he is... He was a QB at Michigan and later went on to become the Head Coach of the Blue Hens (Delaware). He was an innovator of the Wing-T offense (boooorrrrriiiiinnnnnggggg), and he was elected to the Hall of Fame as a coach. If I'm not mistaken he ended his career with 300 wins. I'm not sure about the Ryan dude or that Sayers fellow!!
  17. Lets not forget the 1938 Tennessee Vols on the college level. They only gave up 16 points in 11 games and had 8 shutouts!! I think I could win with that D, Hound!!
  18. Never said 8 but did say 7. I agreed with Barack because he said 6 wins easily. It's not that hard to understand. If I'm Peter Pan living in Never Never Land then you must be Gilligan living on some island out in the middle of nowhere, lost, looking for help.
  19. Thanks for the compliment. The Hound definitely knows his stuff, and I'm not sure I could fare well against him head-to-head. I'm just really competitive, and I like to talk different schemes from time to time. You're correct on the '09 defense. We aren't sure what Coach Qualls will be in charge of, but I'm assuming it'll have something to do with defense. He's got a great mind, and it'll be interesting to see what changes are made to the D unit. As for the Offense, I think they'll get things squared away this year and be better, but only time will tell whether or not we can score some points. Should make for an exciting '09 season.
  20. 1) DE isn't chasing O/S zone. Have plenty front side for that play. 2) hahah. Watch some football!! 3) Jet is blocked like O/S zone so I really don't need your opinion on blocking it. Counter is very productive in the zone. Once again, watch some football!! 4) You said you were blitzing not me. 5) You obviously need to be coaching with all that great football knowledge!! 6) Loving it! Go 'Cats in '09!
  21. I finally agree with Barack. Didn't mean to mention the old region as to why we didn't win, only to point out that speed was very different. The young talent should produce 6 wins easy with the easier schedule. Finally, we're on the same page.
  22. Answers to your statements: #1 - Looping stacked LB takes care of QB keeper and boot. #2 - The trap out of the gun isn't as quick hitting as the trap under center. It's run like the zone but used as a change of pace. #3 - Don't care how you would block jet, and you're wrong on counter. #4 - You said you would play a 40 and bring the OLB to keep the QB on time. Never said you were running a 50 just said you would end up playing the same responsibilities. I'm sure you'll continue to deny it but it's the truth. #5 - I could put as many points as needed to beat you (3) and many more. You have no idea what to do outside of line blocking (RB & QB steps, WR 'hot' routes, etc.). #6 - You couldn't shoot holes in anyone's philosophy except maybe your own. Good try though. Rocking Chair, I have to agree with you. The kids have to buy into the philosophy you're teaching and perform on the field. They can't make excuses and they need to put the last 3 years out of the heads and move on to the future. We have talent and we have a good staff so things are starting to look up. Lastly, York, Cannon, etc. will not have near the same speed as anyone in our old region. They can talk all they want but they've never had any tradition or success over time so they aren't really worrying me at this point.
  23. You have to be one of the dumbest people I've ever talked to. Looping the LB (weakside stacked) isn't leaving a hole in the middle. I have five guys playing the zone and you aren't even going to block one of them (the backside DE). I'm also going to blow up your G & T by playing three against two in their "zone". I could go on and on but you obviously will never pick up on it. By the way, not reading the DE is completely ridiculous. You should just run it under C if you aren't reading anything. And I haven't changed anything, I've just given you scenarios and your hard headedness would be what would ultimate lead to your defeat. And I guess the trap would stink against the 3-5-3. I mean the T's wouldn't start coming upfield hard to get off of your double team "zone" block leading him to an easy earhole by your trapping guard. And the LB's would never overrun it looking for the zone. But then again, with your limited knowledge I'm sure you wouldn't run it to look like the zone so the D probably would blow it up and leave you scratching your head once again. As for the speed option, let me spell that one out for you as well. You're the one running a 4 wide set so that makes it easy. You block the DL the same as O/S zone and crack on the stacked LB leaving the OLB (the one covering your slot receiver) as the only unblocked player (which you would pitch off of). I guess that would never work. As for counter and jet I'm not going to comment on either of those because I don't think you can handle it and I would have to answer another one of your absurd replies. And I'm not sure you've mentioned the bootleg to a great degree, although you did mean short "hot" routes. Maybe that was the bootleg you were talking about. Lastly, the 3-5-3 is a version of the 50, there's no doubt about it. But you have OLB's instead of DE's so you have a little more speed on the field. They don't have the same responsibilities as you would in a regular 50 and most teams don't run it like a traditional 50. OLB's walk out, they walk up, they blitz off the corner, they play coverage, they do a variety of things. Watch a game, which you claimed to have done over the years, and then lets talk. Next years team won't be running 4 wide sets to my knowledge and they won't be running a lot of zone. It really doesn't matter how you would block it or what you would do against the 3-5-3, and it doesn't matter what I would do against your O or D. What matters is we start supporting this group of young men and be positive in turning this program around. Go 'Cats.
  24. Yeah you're right. They are blocking zones, but those zones turn into men at some point or another. If a D chooses to bring pressure then the zone blocking schemes turn into blocking men much sooner. Also, stunts will cause OL problems in HS and you obviously don't know much about the read if you think wrapping the backer and bringing the weakside DE off the edge won't cause any problems. I never claimed to be Buddy Ryan but I'm sure I could shut down your very vanilla offense. Now, if you go against what you said earlier about only running the I/S & O/S Zone and Zone Read then you might be dangerous. For instance, mixing in some trap, speed option, boot, jet, QB lead, QB & TB counters, etc. would make the D work a lot harder to contain the running game. As for teaching the 3-5-3 to high schoolers it's clear to see that you aren't watching many HS games as of late. Teams are running the 3-5-3 at schools everywhere and it's not very difficult to teach. Of course, it's not being taught at the same level colleges are teaching it but it's still very effective and leads to many problems for the O.
