  1. One of the big things, I think, is will SP underestimate MUS? It was very clear that Olive Branch did last year early on and they never seemed to be able to crank it up.

I believe that MUS also has Olive Branch @ OB next week and then a good White Station team a week or two after that. That is a heck of a 3 game stretch.

I agree with the post above about the MUS defensive scheme, but this might be the first time that a very young defense gets really tested.

If I had to venture a guess, I would pick MUS in a close one. SP is probably better athlete for athlete, but it is easy to underestimate the Owls based on their overall size and year in and year out, MUS remains to be one of the best well coached and disciplined group of FB players I have seen at this age. Oh yeah, and bc Barry Brunetti seems to make things happen when they need it.

  2. well not to mean this stupid but your middle school has to be in the same building with the high school

or murfreesboro blackman and siegel would play 8 graders because there middlle school and elemenatry schools are all on the same campus

Sorry, but this in inaccurate. The requirement is that they have to share the same campus.

There has been a precedent for this in public schools. There was a MS Basketball player from Nashville 2 or 3 years ago that was like 6'2 or 6'3. I remember the Tennessean doing an article on how they moved her up to the Varsity program.

  3. Quite simple. Achieving Freshman status (9th grade), you are now eligible to participate in organized High School Athletics. You are at an age considered physically strong enough and mentally tough enough to deal with 18 & 19 year-olds on a field of competitive play. In order to compete with other programs, you would need to demonstrate to your coach that your talent (plus physique and mental capabilities) exceeds that of other upperclassman from your own program and it would be in his opinion and that of your parents that you can compete. That behind you, when you are runover by someone who is 5-6 years older than you and and twice your physical size that you consider it all a part of the game and not to look at the ref for the sympathy that bigger mean girls shouldn't be permitted to do that to a girl half their size. I think in club ball that may be why they group all the soccer players by age such that these events don't normally take place, but only by some freak of nature.

19 year olds are not eligible under TSSAA rules.

By your logic, a 8th grader should not have been able to win the Division 2 State Golf Title last year because he would not be mentally or physically strong enough to win it. Or for that matter, and 8th grade girl on our team should not have been able to score 15 goals as an 8th grader. Our Volleyball player that set a state assist record as an 8th grader and made 1st team All-State. Then there is the 8th grade PG that led her team to a basketball state title, and a 6'3 (not physically big enough) 8th grade tennis player that made it to the D2 Tennis Semi-Finals in singles.

You might want to do some research before you call the TSSAA with your reasons why 8th graders can not possibly compete. :bored:

  4. I don't think there is an eligibility rule, as in 4 years only. I think it comes from baseball and football where good athletic have gotten to play more because of necessity that greatness. I think, as regards to soccer, if there was a 4 year rule, you would never see an 8th grader.

If my daughter/son is at a school with middle and high schools at the same location and your son/daughter is at Tiger Woods Middle on Main Street and the Tiger Woods High School is on Second Street, how do you make that the determining factor????

There 4 year rule says that you have 4 years of eligibility once you begin HS. As mentioned above, as long as the HS is on the same campus as the MS, an 8th grader can play (Section 8 of the bylaws). I would venture to say that the thought behind it the MS and HS having to be on the same campus has something to with avoiding recruiting.

  5. Sorry just got home from 600 mile round trip drive to watch water puppy play in her first college game. They won 8-2. :roflolk:

They are young and fast. The scores of every game so far could have been much higher. Hutch looked good and had a lot of ball time, but the speed and depth of SAA was to much. I hope they stay healthy after the past two years of injuries. Hope you guys find the back of the net. We need all the strength we can muster from the West.

Please say hello to water puppy for us and congrats on that win there.

Nice summation on your game versus Hutch. Sounds like you came out in a whirlwind at the half and threw Hutch off their game....we will have to watch for that....wonder what Bobby said to them to get them so fired up?!?! A couple of quick goals can really affect the chemistry of the opponent that is tough to ever recover from. We still have our speed and talent up top....just need to find the net more often off of our shots!

And yes....let's make a huge statement from the West!

I would say that the first half was a dandy. Agnes moved the ball around extremely well in the second and that opened things up. Even their young ones that came in, did so with with great poise and confidence. When they got the 3rd goal, things seem to just snowball. While St. Agnes played great, I think that our biggest enemy was ourselves that night. Too many mental errors.

Its been a long week. 6 games in 6 days after playing 2 today. Not the preferred method, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I think it is safe to say that St. Agnes was the best team we have played so far. The combination of overall team speed and balance are why.

  6. Just got word today that the Mid Tennessee Classic will be moved this year from the Boro to the A-Game Sportsplex in Franklin-Cool Springs. Reasons given were that the tournament has grown in size and that the new venue will allow teams to play at one place without having to use auxiliary gymnasiums.

  7. I heard that ECS and Hutchison played a very evenly matched game with neither team having a lot of shots on goal.

Pretty good summation. Could have gone either way. Both teams gave up a bad goal each. ECS had appeared to score another in the second but it was negated by a foul against their team. Game winning goal came with 3 to play on a great play by two seniors.

  8. Hutchison 2, ECS 1

Did you see this game? Both Huchison and ECS are playing in Chattanooga this weekend at the Baylor tournament. I was curious to get a scouting report.

    Yes, I was there.

Scouting Report: Two well coached teams with plenty of athletes and experience.

  9. It is not doubt a very sad time for those surrounding Sullivan South. My condolences go out to their team, community, and the young man's family.

I wanted to mention something that seem to fly under the radar at the TSSAA Board of Control Meeting. The TSSAA and Baptist Sports Medicine (of Nashville) have teamed together to form a Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. The committee will be made up of sports medicine professionals from across the state. In a nut shell, the committee will advise everyone from administrators to athletes to parents on pertinent issues pertaining to athletic participation.

  10. CB, Some have already done that from Memphis and I have will have to find the posts. This is consistant with what MO has doine with other Districts. I don't believe they will go into Memphis but from my viewpoint since he has just done this, it is more that has been done for the fans currently but I agree it is not the complete picture. Wonder where the CA's article is on the season starting this year or are they passing this year.

I would expect that the CA will have something shortly. They recently sent out their annual "Preview" forms, so hopefully people were diligent in getting those in. Recent history would suggest to me that you will see something this week or next. They typically pick up Volleyball and Soccer coverage after the 1st or 2nd week of football.

  11. A couple of things bother me here...

While I agree with the order of placement, what responsible or credible journalist simply puts "state runner-up last year" as their "breakdown" of a team only to follow up with nothing for another team. There is absolutely nothing pertinent in your so called analysis to back up your claim.

Furthermore, how on earth do you neglect to project the whole West Region? Sure the small school region is divided in 2, but it is still one region.

While its good to see more people giving the sport coverage, it does not help when the said coverage does nothing to promote or inform the reader.

  12. MUS is all-male (with Hutchison as its sister school). St. Agnes (sister of CBHS), St. Mary's, and Immaculate Conception are all-female. And it's Munford, not Munfordville. :thumb:
Sorry about that Munford. The other , I believe, is on the other end of the State. And to make up for it, Munford may still be the home of the "Flyin Hawaiian", and other players who are enjoyable to watch.hh
The issue of correcting is important but missed point of the post which stated not enough schools in the area. The reasons for all female is interesting and after posting Hutchison's schedule for them I totaled up the schools and there are enought to support event with the right sized facility and likely, asking for the schools, there must not be interest in some of the schools. Nice schools, big time sxposure, Hutchinson, Houston, Bolton and Colliervile do their part, the silence is deafening other than those schools. Play has always been much above average. Silence and communication has been much beow average, Are your schedules in?

I think that I should have better clarified what I meant by # of schools. There are plenty of schools in the Memphis area, but in all fairness, Volleyball is very very weak in the City schools, and and even for some of the smaller private schools. What you are left with is a melting pot of D2 A & AA schools along with some of the county schools like Houston & Collierville. We have our share of local tournaments and there have been play days in the past. A lot of our teams face each other in the regular season (bc of the number of teams in D2 AA this season, some of those teams have less room on their schedule), and typically play in a lot of the same tournaments and/or camps. My main point was that Nashville is more of a central location with more quality teams to draw from, thus allowing for more opportunities for play days and such without always playing the same competition.
