  1. I'll agree. It is very early, but these two teams quite possibly will play four times before March. Got a feeling that Westview will win one or two of those games. For now, just looking forward to next Tuesday's battle. Congrats to the Lady Chargers on winning the Lions Club championship. Westview beats Madison Academic this Saturday, and it's 16-0 vs. 12-0 in Dyer one week from tonight.
  2. Milan will have another strong season in '09. Williamson and Gilbert lead the way for a talented senior class. Heard Coach Morris on the radio during the Christmas basketball tournament. He said getting stronger in the weight room is a priority. Got to have a QB. But even though the schedule is tougher week to week, Morris said next year's team could be better than this year. That's scary. I'll say the Bulldogs go 9-1 with a loss to Dyersburg. Wouldn't be surprised to see another 10-0 regular season, though. Exciting to see Milan play Dyersburg and Crockett Co. in district games, keeping all three county schools, then playing JCS and Huntingdon. They'll be ready for another deep playoff run in 3A.

  4. That's correct, my apologies. Was thinking about Gleason beating Lake Co. by 2. UC fans have to hope that they will bring the kind of effort from the Obion Central and Westview games to these big district contests coming up. Peabody, Lake Co. and Humboldt after the first of the year will be a tough test. Then six very tough games to finish the regular season. But win most of those and finish near the top.
  5. Hard for me to get a tournament read on Union City. The talent is definitely there, as you talked about their 10 wins and efforts about some really good teams. Big rematch coming up with Gleason, a game they won by one point, then a couple of games with Greenfield, Peabody and Lake Co. If the Lady Tornadoes were to win four or more of those seven games, they could possibly finish third or fourth. Bottom line, excited to see Union City doing well this year. Should have given them a little more confidence with my picks.
  6. I'll say: 1) Bradford, 2) Humboldt, 3) Lake Co., 4) Gleason, 5) Union City, 6) Greenfield, 7) Peabody, 8) Dresden, 9) South Fulton and 10) Halls. This district is really competitive, especially spots 1-4 and 5-8. Wouldn't be surprised to see some of these teams moved around.
  7. I'll say: 1) Humboldt, 2) Lake Co., 3) Union City, 4) Peabody, 5) Greenfield, 6) Halls, 7) Gleason, 8) Bradford, 9) South Fulton and 10) Dresden.
  8. The Skyhawk women's team is 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the OVC. Not sure. But a few points here. A majority of rural West Tennessee's most talented players over the past few years have gone major D-I or NAIA. Right now - Union has 6 area players, Freed Hardeman has 3 and Lambuth has 2. (Belmont has two great area players in mid-major D-I Atlantic Sun, as well.) It is hard to compete with D-I programs that are playing on the national stage or NAIA programs that are always playing for a national championship. I remember reading an ESPN article a couple of years ago that said Tennessee-Martin had one of the smallest D-I athletic budgets. That has to play a part, too. Head coach Tara Tansil-Gentry, a Greenfield native, does a good job. They actually have two area players on the roster this year - Cali Cupples from Dyer County and Whitney Malone from Munford. UT Martin has recently stepped up their local recruiting in football and men's basketball. Maybe the women's program will follow.
  9. Appreciate the compliment. Yeah, I actually do think so. Probably top 5 though. Marshall Co. (14-0) should be #1. McMinn Central (12-0) and Upperman (12-1) will be up there too. I'm agreeing with greenfieldfan. AP voters probably won't go too far to remember what these teams have done. They watched Marshall Co. beat GC by 29 and haven't seen Westview at state in three years. (It's a new year, but this is the first poll so there's not much to go on.) I do believe that GC and Westview deserve top 5 rankings. That aside, state rankings will just make this game bigger for the fans. Just another tough district night for both teams. It will be exciting.
  10. Gibson Co. and Westview are the two best teams in 13AA, but not in the state. I think GC might be #2, but expect they will both be in the top 6 or so. It will still be a great game, though. Going with the Lady Pioneers by 10. But Rechis will get her points.
  11. Westview beat Hickman County (KY) tonight, 74-46 at Martin. Amber Rechis led the Lady Chargers with 30 points. They improve to 13-0 on the season and play Union City on Monday night at 7:00 in the Lions Club semifinals.

  13. Saw Gibson Co. play Peabody and Bradford in the Christmas Tournament. The Lady Pioneers are a very strong team. They have so many offensive weapons, and their defensive pressure is incredible. Really expect GC to win the district championship and return to the state tournament. I'm looking forward to the Westview games and rematch with Obion Central at Dyer. Was a little disappointed in Milan's games against Bradford and Humboldt. Those are two talented teams from 14A, but it would seem that the Lady Bulldogs can learn a lot from their two losses. They can score points (have put up over 80 three times) but it will be interesting to see how they can play in big district games coming up next month. Perica Glenn leads the way with 21 PPG and can really battle down low. Bradford and Humboldt are two of the top teams in 14A. Think they will make some noise in the postseason. Peabody showed a lot of heart in their win over Humboldt, coming back from 18 down right after halftime to win by one. The Lady Tide will be good for a district upset or two, if some things bounce their way. Girls basketball in Gibson County has been amazing the last two years. This tournament was fun to watch.
  14. Some info about Milan: The Bulldogs are 7-2 overall and 1-0 in District 13AA. Their two losses have come to Class A power Humboldt (82-37 and 98-68). Milan averaged 66.7 PPG and gave up 56.1 PPG in their seven wins. They are led in scoring by 6'1" Sr G Lawrence Douglas (17.7 PPG) and 6'1" Sr G Brady Sheppard (14.2 PPG). Milan is #11 in today's CoachT strength vs. schedule rankings.
