  1. Jackie Pope -- 15.2 yards a carry, led state in scoring, 44-64 passes, state and national championship team, entire backfield composed state championship 400 relay, high school all-american, featured in article in Parade magazine.

  3. Only the Director of Schools can hire/fire school personnel. The school board can only grant tenure and hire/fire the Director of schools and set school policy. This is all due to the law change few years back that took Tennessee to an appointed position rather than an elected office. If Stuart has the support of the board then he could tell the Director that "you either fire this coach or we'll fire you" or something like that. Not the way the system is supposed to work, however.
  4. Classifications for A,AA, AAA and Football 1A,2A,3A,4A,5A have been set. Schools still can now request to move up in classification. http://tssaa.org/Classifications/20052009classification.htm

  6. Here's a pretty good team. In 1938, Elizabethton won the first (and last until 1969) TSSAA state championship by defeating Jackson 26-14. Elizabethton defeated Dobyns Bennett 39-0, and Shelbyville 26-0 to get to the finals. Jackson defeated Grove High 19-3 and Memphis Tech 19-6 to get to the championship.
  7. OK, so sotfball champs were crowed right over the border in Mississippi and people filled the message boards with comments. I wonder what kind of backlash was felt in 1948 when the TSSAA state championship baseball game was played in Lakeland, Florida between Christian Brothers High and Memphis Central!
  8. Box scores will be posted on the website as soon as they arrive at the media center. Boxes are kept on computer at the venue then email-ed to media center then posted on the Internet. This detailed information is posted as soon as it comes in from the games.

  12. When putting the football playoff history together there were attempts to standardize as many schools as possible. However, it was not possible to to do this for all schools. Lynn View high school was consolidated into Ketron high school then Ketron (north of Kingsport) became parts of the Sullivan directional schools (North, Central). Porter and Lanier were in Blount County. Maury high school was in Jefferson County (Dandridge). It was OK to take the Hartsville play-off records and move to Trousdale County since it was pretty much a one-to-one switch. Could not do so for Sequoyah since it was made up of Madisonville and Vonore. Could not do so for Charleston since they became part of Walker Valley and Bradley Central. Crossville - to - Cumberland County OK Many more cases were addressed -- I can't remember them all -- have them written down somewhere -- I'll see if I can dig up.

  24. Schools usually sign a two-year contract. Most commonly the contract states that each team gets all home receipts. In years past Oak Ridge used to open each year with Knoxville East (now Austin-East) at home and they could split the gate. Schools can modify that contract in any way they want -- it is totally their decision. The most logical thing (in my mind) would be to play the Rockwood game at Kingston (of course Vic may have a say in that!). But Kingston plays A-E that night at home - so that is out. Harriman middle school is also affect as they have two home games -- Clinton this Thurs and then Cherokee (Kingston), plus possibly three playoff games. I think I heard that the finals were already scheduled to be played at Harriman. If the remaing varisty games are moved to Alcoa and Rockwood then some deal would have to be reached to allow Harriman to get the majority of the receipts (since they would have gotten everything if played at their place) - so they have some leverage in making a deal.
  25. The best way to jump start a program is to hire former Oak Ridge coach Joe Gaddis. His strongest trait is being able to jump start programs. This is from a story by Mike Blackerby of the Oak Ridger: In 1982, Gaddis went 7-4 in his first season at head coach at Tullahoma. The Wildcats were 1-9 the year before he arrived and 7-23 the previous three seasons. Tullahoma had 27 varsity players in 1981, but 71 for Gaddis' first season. Oak Ridge was coming off an 8-4 season and a 51-0 loss to Jefferson County when Gaddis took over in 1988. The player count jumped from 49 to 97 in his first season and OR finished 12-1. Gaddis' third stop saw Pascagoula (Miss.) improve from 4-7 to 5-5 in 1999 and the varsity grow from 21 to 68 players. The Pascagoula booster club had one member when Gaddis arrived on the scene. When he left, it had 100. At Decatur, the Bears have gone from 59 players last year to 95 this season. They had not defeated cross-town rival Decatur in ten years, but Gaddis got them his first year. This for a school that doesn't even had its own football field. Swimming is king there. Last year Gaddis interview for the job at McMinn County.
