Gov-Man I think I REALLY saw a clip. Anyway, Blount still had the ball in great field position and turned it over the next play. Maryville promptly took the ball back downfield and ran it in, instead of trying to pass it in on the 1 yard line. I'm not taking anything away from Blount, their D was as good as anyone we saw in the regular season, except maybe for Central. The thing that hurt Blount last season was a lack of a running game from the RB position imo. They made a nice adjustment early by spreading the field and letting Wojo run the ball. Of course, Tipton not playing MLB that game, made that go a lot better. That was just good coaching. The Blount coaches stated later something like 'Maryville's depth showed in the 2nd half' and I believe that had the ring of truth to it. Go Rebs.

First hcaoc is correct. Blackstock had the '99 Heritage game. GQ called a time-out and asked him repeatedly if he was sure about his "ruling." In his mind at the time, Heritage "won" the game. In other words,"Too bad MHS we don't know the rules on a 4th down dead ball foul." Heritage did push around MHS and outplayed them, but so did UT in the 2000 Florida game that they lost. Bottom line is Blackstock and Co. were wrong and went to MHS to say so the following week. A friend of mine who refs in the KFL told me that blunder was the subject of their high school officials meeting the following week, back in '99.
Gov-Man are you referring to the "phantom " block that Drew Galyon took on the back of his leg? Looked like a clip to me. As far as the '99 Blount game goes, that was the most upset that I have ever seen "classy" George Quarles. And I can understand why. After 3 penalties in OT to keep Blount alive, he was upset that another flag was not called for a Blount player picking Maples off of Owens on their score. Then I really enjoyed the "classy" fire set by someone after their "win". Pyromania was in the air. Oh well, some people just handle wins better than others. Reminded me of Detroit when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. Surprised that no cars or pick-ups were not overturned.
Little susie, "Big Al" was my pal. Along with Conley, Terry Bryant, and the "Minner" flash James Black. I was more of a Parkway and Druid Hill Drive-In man myself. Big Dad could coach circles around Rainbow. Case in Point....A ref friend of mine was doing a HHS game when Rainbow was there and told me this story.....Rainbow says, "HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY, James go in there and take Trentham out." Then James replies, "But coach I AM TRENTHAM!!" Classic Rainbow...
As far as "gettin jiggy with it." I too am happily married. I figured a girl like you would be more into "knockin da boots." You know like Herman's, Red Wings, or what ever kind of boots "da" Co-op "sellz." Go Rebs.
-
Little susie, I was referring to Nebolian mommas and aunts and other "branch" kin and womenfolk. Go Rebs.
-
reff "look at me" Stewart has gone bigtime. Meathead Stinnett is now a dirt track (Smoky Mountain Raceway) executive. Bruton Smith and other race track owners watch out for Stinnett and Garner. Could Meathead become the next Don Naman? Go Rebs.
-
Little susie, how did you know I would have an opinion? Interestin'.
The Good...
1. Both the Hodson's Steve and Kenny Bob (ain't nothin' wrong with bein' a Rebel "luva").
2. Ole Red Sturgeon ( if you wore Red and Black and were nicknamed Red Rebels you were hard to beat).
3. "Snuffy" Bailey (Alcoa guy, but fair).
4. The new KFL officials.
The Bad...
1. Nelson (stays on opponents sidelines at MHS and wisely makes horrific calls from a safe distance).
2. Reynolds (Alcoa guy, kin to Nelson, 'nuff said).
3. Larry Renfro ( Loves puttin' the flag to the Red and Black).
4. The old KFL officials.
5. Middlesboro, Ky. officials ( Just ask Coach Story).
The Ugly...
1. Big Jerry Glenn (Former KFL official who thought that all teams in Knox County needed a 3 TD head start).
2. Nelson in his only pair of black shorts.
3. Unshaven women from Nebo Mountain ( a.k.a. NEBOLIANS, as a youth often found myself envious of their 'taches, big pork chop sideburns, and "lag" hair).
Go Rebs.

coachT Gov-Man is correct. The 5th page was on and then disappeared. There are 3 or 4 posts not shown on the 'What's the latest on William Blount' football thread. Thanks.

Little susie, Mahone lived in Alcoa. Of course since you probably dated Dexter, you may know more than me. I used to like seeing Rainbow taking out his "boyz" and treating them to a soft serve ice cream at the old Dairy Dip. It's amazing what a coach can accomplish with a cone of ice cream. You remember Maryville Junior High player Scott Isbill don't you? Another Maryville City boy who Rainbow enticed to HHS. How many trips did the TSSAA make to HHS during Rainbow's years?
Yeah I too liked the Walland Red over Columbia Blue that the mighty Mountaineers used to wear. I did hear that they stole the color scheme from A-E though. Oh well, they still have those "cute" '99 Blount-Heritage t-shirts.
Were you the girl from Nebo Mountain that got caught blowing up Dempster Dumpsters on Halloween? Or were you the one who chain-sawed down the trees and blocked the roads? I hear those girls trained everybody how to use a Homelite at the Heritage Woodshed. By you a beer? I thought you still made your own and it ain't beer.
On refs, you forgot one. Nelson's brother-in-law, Reynolds. I usually get a kick out of watching those "boyz" trying to rip MHS. But I admit the '99 Heritage game did get me a little sideways. Making bad calls is one thing, but not knowing the rules of the game and getting paid for it is bush. Not knowing the meaning of dead-ball foul on 4th down and that there is a change of possession (you know just like after a punt) is laughable. Gov-Man brought up the '99 Blount game. Was it 10 or 11 "playz" that they gave Blount to score in overtime? Thank goodness for the road games and playoffs where we can get decent officiating.
Maples told me that going through Everett's spring practice before his sophomore year "recruited" him to MHS. Ole Cliff Irwin's offense had those lineman laying lookout blocks. Ricky thought he wanted to have knees in a little better condition than his big brother Danny when he left Everett. Oh yeah, Sentell did not recruit Spradlin. I did. Go Rebs.
-
Yep mhs you are correct. Carl was allowed to go to Maryville City Schools because his mom teaches at Sam Houston. TNboy you know like Reese McMahan who lives in the Heritage district was allowed to go to Blount because Earl taught there. Now tell me, who recruited John Lawhon? Go Rebs.
-
Wake up little susie! Since you're going back 25 years, you know Wilson wasn't the best recruiter in the county. Rainbow Heatherly, Heritage basketball coach, was. He could recruit with Rodney Garner. He didn't send buses or Charles West Chevy vans, he went to Alcoa and Grade Road and picked up his recruits errr...."playaz" Roddy Turner, Michael Rorex, and Dexter Mahone. Rainbow was seen driving his "guyz" all around the county and especially to and from Heritage High.
Who recruited Landers? Did they send a bus, did Mayor Steve West send a West Chevy van, or did they use the Heatherly (Blount County) method and just go and pick'em up in a station wagon? Give me something fresh.....you know like what "playaz" has Quarles or Hammontree recruited.
I do agree with you on one point. I do like our uni's and the are "cute." But they can't hold a light to those "cute" t-shirts that Blount and Heritage had printed for their '99 game. You know the one's that said, " Regardless of who wins we both screwed err............BEAT Maryville." A proud accomplishment for once in history. With that as their best t-shirt and accomplishment, you know a win over a school smaller than them says it all. Maryville is their measuring stick. No wonder those "guyz" are so DOMINANT in 5A. Go Rebz err...Rebs.

flyinpro, MaryvilleRebels, Rebelron well said. When someone went down, somebody else picked up the slack. Yet others toughed it out and played injured on heart and guts. It was amazing to watch these "brothers" find a way, for 15 weeks, to prevail week in and week out. That's what happens when no one cares about who gets the credit and a bunch of young men buy into the TEAM concept. They simply would NOT be denied. Go Rebs.
-
MaryvilleRebels I think you will see these kids pick it up once they get into a structured weight training program. One coach told me not too long ago that good high school linemen can to a degree, be made with work ethic, weight training, and desire. Those kids that are in shape, strong, and good technicians. Of course it always helps to have a big frame to start with. Go Rebs.
-
Rebelron, "Frye" was a competitor. As a matter of fact, so were all of those '76 Rebels.
The 1970 game between Maryville and Loudon was my favorite memory. Although I was only a young spectator, it was an unbelieveable game. The game was played at Loudon and Loudon was the defending state AA champion. Loudon jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead. It looked as though the game would be a laugher for them. The second half was a different story. Former Cleveland coach Benny Monroe and then MHS offensive coordinator, found a weakness in the Loudon pass defense in the second half. The Rebs behind All-State QB Tommy Beaver and WR Benny Davis lead MHS all the way back to a wild 35-28 win. Coach Story's defense also came up big in the second half. The win sent MHS to a perfect 12-0 season and the TSSAA AA championship. From that game on, Red and Black got in my blood. Go Rebs.

David Ellis, Maryville High School. He does a tremendous job in teaching angle blocking and fundamentals. He is a better person than coach. He believes in and develops unity in his players and has their respect. Go Rebs.
-
Blue I haven't heard on these guys. They could play for someone. Go Rebs.
-
MLREB don't forget Ryan Maples little brother, Tyler. He has the jets. Also don't forget Miranda and Singleton. I agree they are loaded. Plus I hear they're are some transfers that will be heard from too. Go Rebs.
-
I have an opinion on who is the best, but there is one thing I know for sure. On the first Saturday in December the last 3 years, Maryville may have been out-athleted, out-talented or whatever. But when the final whistle blew all 3 years they had more points. Go Rebs.
-
I don't know exactly who will play where yet, but I agree that Coach Ellis will get them ready. Chris Large, Headrick, Browning, May, Wallace, Gardner, Telfer, Jeff Smith, Rhett Brooks, Cory Everett, Gary Tucker all will have a chance to prove themselves either on the OL or DL. I think you will see the majority of these going only one way though. We like those fresh linemen in the 4th quarter. Another summer of 5:30 am workouts and these guys will be ready to go. Go Rebs.

There are some good arguments on both sides of this issue. I will just trust GQ on this one. He made a decision in 2000 on the QB situation and 11 straight wins followed.
The rest is history.
I don't want to see us divided on whomever GQ believes will be the best for the TEAM. They both wear Red and Black and personally I'm for all of them. Our teams of the past have thrived on being unselfish and I expect more of the same. Besides TEAM is what MHS is all about.
I think that if our WR position gives us the big play ability and balance we are looking for, then Rouse will be the QB. If we are not as productive at WR as we need to be, then I think maybe Rouse could play some at WR to give more of a threat at receiver. Rouse needs the ball, anytime we can get it to him, regardless of where he lines up.
I believe to win at the highest level we MUST be balanced. I believe GQ will go with what gives us the most balance and flexibility. He takes what the defense gives, be that the run or the pass. We have beaten good, athletic, running teams (Memphis East with Sallis and Dickerson in 2000, Hillsboro with Gray, Price, Petty, Tibbs etc. in 2001, Hillsboro again with Bryant, Tibbs, Doss etc. in 2002). One of the reasons we have beaten these teams, BALANCE. All these teams could run the ball. But they could not pass effectively and it caught up with them when they had to throw to come back late in those games. Go Rebs.

Brandon100 I made my list off the teams that I have seen. You're a BA fan and you know them better than me, but I didn't see BA in '96. Just for the Red Rebels only, Brandon. Go Rebs.

I believe Blount won that year. But don't put too much stock in freshman games. Physical development, TEAM cohesion, work ethic, coaching, growth spurts, players not quitting, getting injured, or transferring are very important. Additionally, look at the football team as 3 classes and not just one. Case in point; The MHS football team of 2001 had a small but good class, but they were not very good as freshman. But by adding classes together along with good coaching and TEAMWORK they got rings.
Meadows is a good coach. I think he is a hard worker and he and Quarles are very good friends from what I hear. When he lost his stepson in 2001, the whole community (Alcoa, Maryville, and Blount County) shared in their grief. Go Rebs.
-
I would have to include to your list from '83 on, the following teams: A.E. '86, Cleveland '93, Maryville '98, and Red Bank '00.
There is no doubt the kids of today are bigger, stronger, and better trained. Football now at all levels is a lot more specialized than in the past. Anyway, I made my list from how the teams that I have seen fared against the competition RELATIVE to their era. It's just my 2 cents, but I have seen a lot of high school football. That's what happens when you get old. Go Rebs.

3. Pearl Cohn '97-Henderson and Co., unbelieveable talent.
4. Brentwood Academy '81-Hockaday and company were tough.
5. Maryville '70-Wilson's best team, ranked #13 nationally.
6. Loudon '74-Led by Clemson signee Marlon "Bubba" Brown.
7. Jefferson Co. '87-Led by Collins, Spivey and T. Quarles.
8. Oak Ridge '91-Great speed and size.
9. Milan '77-Tucker had a great offense.
10. (TIE) Alcoa '89 and Maryville '98-Awesome talent.

My "bother" ain't got nary a one. He and his wives like gummin (for effect) better. I have a full set. It's wonderful what you can buy with "funny money". Maybe we can print you some up and you can get your own playing field. As for "in the family" we don't know if we want to try the things those guys at the Burke-Toney restrooms were doing. Go Rebs.

Little susie, Danny Ray. Little susie speaking of Larry's, were you sweet on Larry "Boy Dog" Robinson? Big Dad had to have been through Nebo, since he was an ole Townsend boy. Nebo, Lover's Lane, and Cars Creek have so much in common.
reff Dee Dee was cute, but I also thought that Tammy was cuter. Little susie, I heard you talking about her "blue eyes." You didn't load those Nebo Mountain logs from both sides of the truck did you? Go Rebs.
