  1. I agree. The parents and coaches are all that's needed to regulate. I've told coaches a couple of times to not pitch my daughter anymore. It's a tough call sometimes. I will say again...the pitcher knows what they can do. They have to tell if they are through.

We limit innings esp. early in the season when it is cold. Learned our lesson. Also I prefer to go back to back (esp in time limit tourneys when the average game is 5 innings maybe less) instead of pitching a game, skiping a game ,pitch a game. that's 10-11 innings in a row and usually done for the day. Now we did pitch Pieroni 21 innings straight at the Worth her sophmore year and it didn't seem to hurt her. We had Bagwell warmed up to pitch the championship but Pieroni would have killed her in the dugout just to get in. Saturday at the Hendersonville Tourney Devon went 11 in a row and was done for the day. Amanda pitched the semis and would have the finals had we won in the semis.

  2. St Benedict over Dickson

Great Tournament too many games for girls to play in one day in my opinion. Did not finish until around midnight Saturday night.........

We would have gladly played one more game B)

  3. STD, I don't disagree with you on many points. I only question a good point you make; style of pitching, teams played on,etc. I do believe the overall play today is better with many good players, but I don't see as many dominant players as in the past. Question;"Could you " put a team together today as good as that Gold team or Don's teams during the 90's. Have any current teams in this state accomplished what they did over the same time period?? I really don't know and just asking. And yes the dementia is setting in. lol.

Bigchief and others gave some impressive stats on the old timers, and I just ask who can match them in the last 4-5 years.

Bigchief, I need a little help and support here. Ha, Ha.

You just don't get it. The past is the past and you want to live in it. There is no way to compare era then and era now. CU31 single wall bats had a lot less rebound effect than the multiple walls or the new composite bats. Routine fly balls hit 180 feet in 1995 probably go 220 off the new composites. A lot of routine outs off of a Siebel rise ball are out of the yard today. A lot of hard hit ground balls of yesteryear were hit a a speed that allowed infielders to make plays yet add the speed off of a composite or multiple wall bat and no body touches them base hit. In the 1990s how many high school home runs did you see? Not many. Goodpasture hit over 30 in 2003 with 7 different players having at least 1. Good athletes but also good technology. In the Worth College tourney in Fullerton CA there were over 50 homeruns hit in two days. Did that happen 10 years ago?

Pieroni had a career era of .43 take out her 8th grade year at era 1.62 and it goes down to .35. 1377 career Ks and 123 wins against 12 losses with 5 losses coming in her 8th grade year against 7 wins. Brooke is up there in my book everybody knows that, Pieroni is just as good.

  4. How on earth can a school be open for only 3 years and put together a program that wins the AA State Championship in basketball. Did this occur with players that are zoned to the school. I think not. They are not recruiting, they are MAGNETICALLY attracting the top athletes. We must multiply before this unfair ATTRACTION becomes too strong of a force.

  5. Fastpitch101, I have to agree with Bigchief on this one. I have coached and played against the best of the best back in the 90's, and I have watched the talent in this state for over 20 years. I have to go with Bigchief on this one. The younger players are good, no doubt about it; BUT I believe most of the parents and players today did not have the opportunity to see the great players of the past. I try to put it all in perspective about who is the BEST. I look at what they did AFTER H.S. The players like Brooke Siebel ( I still think is the best all round ) to play in this state. Kaci Clark, April Faircloth, Beth Alexander, Amanda Fine, Jill Booth, Lindy Lowery, and others had great college careers. When you make All- American in college, you get my attention. To date, I don't know of any players in the past 4-6 years that have the college awards of these older players. Just my opinion.

Then how did any of these players get your attention? Not a single one made All American save April Faircloth who was an NAIA All American. One thing that you overlook is how the level of offensive play has improved with better technology in the bats, better hitting instruction and an overall improvement in the level of athletes entering the game. Lindy Lowery is is an all time favorite of mine as a person and a player but reality she is not in the league of a Pieroni or Rhodes, just someone you know. Lindy's sister Carrissa Lowery was a good pitcher having good success in 18 gold but got the shaft in college by a coach who didn't know how to get the job done. Kaci Clark was exceptional and Brooke may have eventually made all American if not injuried in her Junior year (hip). If you compare Siebel and Pieroni ther is not a great divide between them offensively or defensively. Pieroni won a lot of tourneys with her pitching as well as her bat. She won 10 games including tourney finals over a Soddy team that went on to win state champs with a fractured fibula (same injury that kept QB Vick of Atlanta Falcons out for a year), was off three weeks and came back to win region finals, substate and 4 straight in the state. Living in the past is a sign of dementia.

  6. In 1999 my daughter was hit in the left eye by a high and inside fastball, she is very fortunate to be able to breathe today much less see. Dr. David Sain a very competent orthodontist required his daughter to wear a face mask when she played for me in the summers. He once told me that having to reconstruct just one mouth from this type of injury was enough to convince him of the safety benefits. I do not care if you consider this a sexist issue. Now I may get bombed for saying this but I bet you that the protective reactions of the average (I said average) male playing high school baseball are overall better than the average (again average) female playing high school softball. The girls also have less reaction time at 40 ft. on a 60 mph pitch verses a 60 ft. 80 mph pitch. ERA do the math. Another thing I don't really care what the guys do as long as they stay away from my players.

  7. Who are the top 5 teams in the state this year?

    5. Maryville

    4. Maryville

    3. Maryville

    2. Maryville

    1. Maryville

Brooke Melton will lead the Lady Rebs to and undefeated state championship...just watch!

Are you taking even money on this bet?

  8. I have known Rebecca Eldridge from watching her play in high school (Soddy Daisy), having a daughter play with her in the summer in the highest division of softball, 18 Gold, seeing her excel in college, and traveling throughout the country with her and her family. Believe me when I say this is a person of high integrity. No way she would play politics with a kid, play favorites, or in any way hurt a team's chances of being the best they could possibly be. Rhea County is lucky to have a person of this type in their program. Parents can be blind to the abilities of their children and when they take it to this level they need someone to step up just as this board did.

  9. mj for sure.

they have been playing good so far this year, i watched them play in the MJ playday and they kept everybody they played on their toes, never losing a game

also, central has lost a lot of their outfield--gooch and that leftie in right field.

sftbal4lfe note that your post has been edited. One more comment like the one I edited and you will be edited, OUT OF HERE.

  10. My two cents worth: If a High School coach doesn't desire players practicing with the summer team during high school season respect the desire and don't do it. I have coached both summer and high school ball in the same year multiple times respecting the dead period (maybe one year an inadvertant slip that was self reported and resolved with a penalty). I personally see no problem with dual practice however it's just up to the individual coach period. Don't put the player in the middle, that's wrong.

  11. thanks. what about Jellie? she's got be going big.

I have a great deal of respect for this player. She is what a coach looks for in a team member. She has excellent skills as a player but more importantly she has respect for the game. She can play anywhere she wants to.

  12. It is extremely easy to tell who recruits and who does not recruit in both the public and private school arenas. In D-2 it is obvious that Brentwood Academy, Memphis University School, Christian Brothers, Ensworth, Montgomery Bell Academy, Baylor, McCallie, and Briarcrest all recruit in numerous sports (such as Baylor for wrestling and MBA for football). In D-1 it' is also very easy to see who recruits: Riverdale, David Lipscomb, Goodpasture, Covington Academy, and Ravenwood (T.C Jennings went to Brentwood Academy his eighth grade year and "decided" to go to Ravenwood the next year). It is a very ignorant statement saying that nobody in the state recruits because the schools that do are the ones winning state championships:

    1. Ravenwood State AAAAA champions in football

    2. Baylor State champions in traditional and dual meet state wrestling last year.

    3. Lipscomb sate runner up in AAA football this year

    4. Covington Academy State Champions in AAA football this year.

5 Goodpasture runner up in AA football this year

These are just a few of the State Championships each of the schools above have one because of recruiting.

Not a single school with the exception of BA (and that was overturned I beleive) has been sanctioned or punished by the TSSAA in any way for illegal contact with an athlete. But I bet you know someone who has a cousin who works with an aunt whose sister knows a parent of an athlete in Chattannooga who was approached by Baylor about going to school to wrestle, right? The schools you listed may have had students moved or paid tuition to attend out of legal choice. Not a single thing wrong with that and the whine you can make out of your sour grapes should be delicious with a good cheddar.

  13. Private schools advertise for students preferably good athletes.

Public schools run public service announcements to inform the public about their school.

Just like, private schools recruit athletes to come to their school.

Because of their success, public schools are able to "attract" athletes to come to their school .

    VG,

Did you understand the difference now?

    Here's the deal:

Successfull athletic programs produce free advertisement. Do you not think that parents of young athletes don't read the sports page and read XYZ Public School or ABC Private won a state championship therefore we need to investigate how we can get go to that school?

Successfull athletic programs at public schools attract athletes examples Riverdale in football, Shelbyville in basketball etc.

Successfull athletic programs in DI private schools attract Tuitioin Paying Students which the schools need to stay open. They just happen to sometimes be potential athletes

  14. Soddy suffered the sophmore jinxs last year. It happened to us 4 years ago. A lot of young talent with 1 years experience behind them but just couldn't get it done in crunch time. With another years experience behind them, I look for them to bring it home. But beware of the Brentwood Bruins this year. They are hungry and very talented.

  15. 1. Straight up student population based with 3 classes, schools can elect to play up, 16 teams in each class make the playoffs.

    2. Total Split (Without any future comments from the publics coming on here and saying XYZ County would have killed ABC Private if they played this year). With three public classes and two private classes.

    3. Do away with high school athletics

    4. Multiplier

    5. Merit

    6. One class

No public tax dollars to subsidize athletics, each county system must have self sustaining program. It is not a right to have non academic programs at the tax payors expense.

  16. When talking about privates having the advantage over public schools, you hear the schools like David Lipscomb, Brentwood Academy, Goodpasture, MBA, CPA, Knoxville Catholic, and many more. The multiplier was intact because of these schools and their way of doing things.

I love HS football just what do you mean by "their way of doing things?" The way I see it "their way" is running excellent programs within the rules established by the TSSAA. They win. Nothing wrong here that I can see. Just because a school places a emphasis on athletics and excels because they work hard at it and happen to be private is not something that is a wrong.

  17. What about some of the pitchers from southern Middle Tennessee, Owen from Lincoln, Lintz from Marshall, Ford from CA?

Ford of CA is just a sophmore this year.

Whoever gets Owens is getting a workhorse. I hope she has some help this season so she can be at the top of her game come tourney time.

  18. Advertisements:

    1. Without advertisements the television broadcast of the Blue Cross Bowls would have not happened.

    2. Ad agencies determine through demographic statistics when it is best for their clients to run ads. Why do you think they advertise Viagra and Levetra during NFL and NASCAR?

    3. Privates have to advertise to fill their enrollments. Competition is great for prospective students in the Greater Metro Nashville area.

    4. Shouldn't they advertise during events that best reach their target audiences ie prospective students?

Sounds like smart business decisions to me.

  19. i know the school is small but with it's rich tradition why does trousdale county always have such a low turnout in football? i've seen the guys in the band they could play not to take from the band but 35 would be a good number for tchs.everyone on tchs could start about anywhere

    1. Yes the school is small

    2. I would imagine that you have to a tough kid to make it through a season as they apparently work their tails off, (good thing).

    3. Most of the clones from the abandoned nuclear plant don't make it out into the world due to having 6-7 fingers on each hand and 3-4 eyes, but the one's that do are good.

  20. Time will tell about the multiplier- it took 2 years in Alabama for the privates to win a state football title after their 1.35- but it only made them stronger.

Georgia eliminated their 1.5 this year.

It's a messed up system regardless- the toothpaste is not going back into the tube.

I believe that 15-20 years from now- there will be 1/3 fewer football programs in public schools. Nationwide participation will be reduced by 30% and privates will play in regional associations apart from the National Federation. Football will be totally funded outside of regular education budgets.

I also predict a coaching shortage based on lack of education certification standards and expectations in the classroom.

All other sports will be AAU and club teams.

There will be a "super conference" of public and privates with money generated by ESPN and Nike.

Everyone else will be rather insignificant. It will be the haves and the have nots.

This is the opinion I posted on the Public/Private Debate Board over a year ago and the Genius of All STrott stated it would never happen. I believe the large Metro areas will have to cut funding of athletic programs that are not self sustaining. Only counties that can generate enough revenue through gate reps. and strong booster clubs will have programs. This will be rural areas where athletics continue to be a community event and private schools.

Let's face it the best of the best in all amatuer sports other than football are club teams in ASA softball, AAU Basketball, and various baseball organizations. Don't get me wrong I think high school athletics are an important part of school life but there is not enough community interest in the larger metro areas due to busing, large comprehensive schools with large zones and the variety of activities outside of sports that are available for kids these days.
