  1. Just saw an article in the Commercial Appeal that is a reprint from the Tennessean. The article lists 5 front runners for the 3A Mr. Football award: Brady Hammonds - QB - Gatlinburg-Pittman Radarious Jackson - QB, RB, DB, & receiver - Sheffield Justyce Law - QB - Stratford Brandon Winton - Receiver - Alcoa Skylan Smith - RB - Covington . I won’t try to put the entire article here, but it gives a nice thumbnail sketch of each player. Good luck, young men!
  2. The Bolivar quarterback is a great player. The trouble is that in my opinion he is the only thing they have. When Covington played them, it looked to me like beside playing QB, he also played defense, and I know he was on their kickoff return team, because a couple of our short kicks went to him. I wonder if he ever came off the field. Now, Bolivar will probably score with him at the controls, but I wonder if their defense can stop Westview. I don’t think so. Massey predicts Westview to take this one 42-14.
  3. Let me second that thought, Stacmot. I’m glad to see you back on Coach T. You know I’m always pulling for Haywood as long as they aren’t playing my Covington team. Go Tomcats.
  4. 15 rushes for 47 yards. Y’all held him down pretty well.
  5. For 3A, I’ll mention Covington’s junior running back, Skylan Smith. Through 7 games, here are his stats: No. Yards Avg. TD’s Rushing 132 1137 8.6 17 Receiving 9. 200. 22.2. 2 Kick Rets. 9 387 43.0. 2 I’m not sure how his stats stack up across the state, but according to the Memphis newspapers, he’s ranked second or third for the Memphis metro area in rushing yardage and in touchdowns scored, regardless of classification. Skylan is the straw that stirs the drink for the Covington offense.
  6. One thing I don’t like is college football playing games on Friday night. That’s for high school football. Saturday is for college football.
  7. I watch football at all three levels. I enjoy high school, college, and pro. But my favorite is by far high school football. Here’s why the high school game is tops for me: 1. It’s a community effort. We may differ about politics, religion, lifestyle, etc. but we all show up and support “our boys” on Friday nights. 2. No instant replays. The officials make their call and that’s the final word. 3. No commercials. Because of 2 and 3, games can be played in 2 to 2-1/2 hours. Occasionally one might go 3 hours, but there are no 3-1/2 to 4 hour games. 4. The players are not paid, at least in my community. 5. I can follow kids through Middle School to High School. It’s fun to watch them develop. 6. The divisions in the TSSAA mean that teams are generally on an equal footing. That’s my take, so I would be interested in what other folks think.
  8. Oh, just a side note on the Covington-McNairy game. Late in the game the Chargers put in our subs. Freshman running back Jaheim Smith had one carry, but it went for 49 yards and a TD. He looked like the future of our running game to me. Y’all might want to remember that name.
  9. I’ll take Haywood, Alex. My neighbors are on a roll and Massey’s pick is Haywood 35 Hardin County 31
  10. Right now the playoff order for Region 8-3A lines up as Sheffield, Bolton, Raleigh-Egypt, Hamilton. It’s early, but I like to look ahead.
  11. After week7, here are the Region 7-3A standings. Schools are listed with their region record, followed by their overall won-lost record. Dyersburg. 4-0 7-0 Ripley 4-1 5-2 Westview 3-1 4-3 Covington 3-1 5-2 Bolivar. 1-3 4-3 Scotts Hill. 1-3 2-5 McNairy Central 0-4 1-6 Liberty Magnet. 0-3 0-6 Westview and Covington have the same region record at 3-1. Covington finishes the regular season by playing Ripley and Westview at home the last two weeks. It appears that those two games will determine the final order of finish for the top four teams. Dyersburg may not mathematically have the Region title clinched, but they are in good shape. However, a loss at Ripley could move them into a tie with Ripley, and Ripley would then win the Region since head-to-head results are the first tie breaker. That’s assuming that Ripley would win their other two games.
  12. Dyersburg is now in the driver’s seat for Region 7-3A. Convincing wins over Covington and Westview mean they only have to handle Ripley to knock out all three contenders.
  13. Thanks for the info. So it was 7 or 8 years ago that they were good. I could not remember. I knew they walked all over our Covington squad a couple of times.
  14. Final 57-14. Chargers travel to Liberty next week. What happened to the strong Liberty teams they had 10 or 12 years ago? They seem to be the weak team in this region now.
  15. Curious - is the 9 from 3 field goals, or what?
  16. 42-7 Chargers at the half. Can you say running clock?
  17. Kickoff in just over 2 hours. It’s homecoming for Covington. I hope Coach Kirby has them focused. Homecoming can be a big distraction.
  18. McNairy (1-5) visits Covington (4-2) this week. Massey predicts Covington will win this one 45-7. I do think that my Chargers can take this one.
  19. It’s happened before. I’m not sure how good a 5-1+Bolton team might be. Covington was in the same region with them a couple of years ago, and they were not very good. But, they may be better now.
  20. Out of curiosity, I pulled up the leaders in Region 8-3A, since they would be the opponents for our region in Round 1 of the playoffs. The leaders are: Bolton 3 1 5 1 Sheffield 3 0 4 2 Raleigh Egypt. 3 0. 3 3 Hamilton. 2 2. 3 3 Once you know that your team is making the playoffs, it’s interesting to follow the teams in 8-3A to see who you might play.
  21. Found this in an old thread on Coach T. I assume it’s the same in 2023: Here are the official tiebreakers from TSSAA 1. Head to head 2. The team with the greatest number of victories overall 3. The team who plays the greatest number of teams who win 50% or more of their games 4. The team who has the greatest number of victories over teams winning 50% or more of their games 5. The team whose opponents have earned the most victories. 6. The team whose opponents have received fewer defeats. 7. Coin flip
