To be honest, heading into the tournament's I was thinking William Blount was going to win it all this year. They seemed to have to most complete team. I suppose the human element of the refs will always be a factor. Sometimes you get by with things that help you win and sometimes you're charged with things that cost you a win. Too bad both teams can't advance. They seem to be pretty evenly matched. At least last night they were.

100% WaCojaCo.  WB also benefitted from calls in the game ... it's just that last one you always notice if you're the one it works against.

  2. From a life-time William Blount fan, was impressed with the whole environment at DB for last night's game.  Nice facility, good P.A. man, quality opponent.  The Oliver kid played one of the best halves of basketball I've ever witnessed in the second half.  Congrats to DB for getting to go to state but ...it was a bitter pill to swallow for us Governors.  Referees are human and calls are missed every game for both sides.  But the final foul call that allowed DB to win was completely wrong.  There was no foul is the primary thing.  The referee that made the call was not in the right position to make it.  The player he called it against was no where close to touching Oliver.  IF -- and there wasn't, a foul to call, there should have been 1.9 seconds left on the clock.  But it was a no call ... if it had happened the exact opposite and benefitted WB ... after watching the video I would totally agree.  DB was fortunate to benefit from a human error ... and it happens.  But it takes a while to recover when you are on the other side.  Good luck to DB at state!

  3. Bball81 ... Hardin Valley is a pretty tough team this year.  They are also ranked in the top 10 in the state this week.  William Blount is solid.  Not certain how they'll stack up with some of the Memphis teams.  I think Blount has one of the best 1-2 punches in the area with Wendell and Roberts.  I DO believe Caden Wendell is the best player in the district.  But I'm a homer of course.  I think WB, Maryville, Bearden, Hardin Valley, and I'll throw in Farragut ... are all capable of beating one another on any given night.  WB has Farragut and Maryville this week ... so the picture might clear up some on those two.  Blount will have to play their best game to win these two.

    WARNING:  Long Post

I said this the other night before JSamson decided to come after me for being some other dude.  I mean this as nicely as I can say it.  The “championship” ride is over at Maryville.

George Quarles knew that this was inevitable and that’s why he bounced when he did.  The moment Oakland hired 2A Kevin Creasy to come to Murfreesboro and run his 2A offense it was officially the beginning of the end of Maryville’s championship runs.  It’s grown so lopsided that Oakland has gotten to where they have to play Division II teams and out of state teams in order to test themselves because they flat out own Maryville right now.

Gary Rankin did the same thing when he left Riverdale after 2005.  Even when Riverdale had countless college prospects and brought in Ron Aydelott to continue the machine.  When adversity hit the Warrior Nation made Aydelott the scapegoat and since then Riverdale hasn’t been the same.  If Rankin had stayed at Riverdale he would have been part of the downfall of Warriors football.  If Quarles had stayed at Maryville he too would have been part of the downfall of Rebels football.  Oh sure they would have beaten the Science Hill’s of the state and they would beat Alcoa, although it wouldn’t be as lopsided as in years past, but in those nut cutting games against better teams from Alcoa, Knoxville West, and Oakland he would have taken an L just like Hunt is doing nowadays.

Maryville today is experiencing what Riverdale went through 15 years ago.  Eventually it will become the new norm and people will learn to accept it.  It’s not a knock.  Maryville is still great.  They are still going to win 10 or so games every year and be a Top 5 team.  If you think it’s 2000-2007 Maryville though you desperately need a reality check.

In the meantime Alcoa’s going to need to build more trophy cases because they are going to really start to put a gap on Maryville as it relates to number of state championships won.  The part that is going to sting the most about it is that their head Coach leading the charge will be a Maryville grad.  Eventually this will take its toll and the players that Maryville “currently get” will become the players that Maryville “used to get” because they’ll all be going to Alcoa to win championships.

Ask Oakland & Riverdale if that isn’t how it works.  Again I’m not trying to be a “Debbie Downer” and I’m not dogging on Maryville football.  What Quarles did at Maryville was one of the most amazing feats of its time.  It’s what Creasy is doing today at Oakland.  Nix will only continue to build and expand on what Reid & Rankin started and established at Alcoa.

I will be at the state championships next weekend if anyone wants to stop by and have a conversation.  Great year Maryville.  Good Luck in the title games Oakland & Alcoa.

Hey…I don’t know about the accuracy of all of your extremely long post, but you are 100% wrong with your first statement about George.  You can believe that or not, but you’re wrong.

  5. I'll put it out there and you all can comment + check me at the end of the season.

    1.  William Blount - solid nucleus returning; good depth with a couple of new additions; lost a key player from last year to transfer portal

    2. Bearden - it's Bearden; hard to pick them anywhere but #1, but I'm being a little of a homer this year.

    3. Maryville - Coach Lambert was a super hire; picked up a "scoring machine" from WB; got some shooters and some size in the post.

    4. Hardin Valley - solid looking squad last year ... very athletic ... well coached

    5. Farragut - new coaching hire was solid; Coach Burris will be intense and "all-in" ... got them this low cause they lost several key leaders

    6. Heritage - hoping Coach Flatford turns things around, he's a program-builder I believe.  They will lean heavy on the Campbell kid I would think.

Gee what a tough guy you are , you gonna beat everyone up at recess ? Not surprised that someone like you is enjoying the Cussing . Most Adults just want a Coach that can show the kids a little Discipline ... I was in the Marines , I've heard every Cuss word on the Planet , but I also have enough Discipline to control myself in front of young kids . Preaching Discipline to your kids while having out of Control frothing at the Mouth Cussing fits I'm sure Impresses the young men  .

    Dear Mr. BS101,

I'm Gary Stinnett.  I'm a long time WB supporter.  Work at First Baptist Church of Maryville.  You can feel free to share with Coach O anything you ever see me say on here--which is rare these days.  I've been around sports all my life ... playing, coaching, Chaplaining, announcing, etc.  I know coaches get carried away at times.  I know I did and still do!  I can only share my opinion ... IF I had a son or daughter playing on a team for a coach who talks like that, I would have issues.  I would share my concerns / complaints with whomever I felt like was in  a position that needed to hear them. First off, I think the biblical thing would be to go the coach directly.  If that was to no avail, then the AD, Principal, School Board, Superintendent of Schools ... at some level his language that day --which I'm assuming was customary--needs to be addressed.  Knowing the Heritage Principal and AD as I do, I'm going to bet it has been dealt with in some manner.

I'm thrilled to see Heritage football start to improve.  One of the players on the Mountaineers team is like a son to me.  My son teaches and coaches at Montvale Elementary, and he so much wants to help Heritage get better.  But win at what cost?  I would rather lose and be able to lay my head down at night and know I tried (imperfectly) to do the right things and be the person God wants me to be, then win and forsake all that.

I'm not trying to be controversial or make you mad, I'm glad you are such a strong supporter of your school.  But I'm entitled to an opinion, correct?  And one other thing ... trust me, Strong X is not a "county guy" who sent his kids to Maryville.  I should know, because I'm a city guy who lives in his neighborhood who sent my kids to WB! :)

    Peace my brother.  Go Mountaineers!

While I do not condone the things that were said in the video, I find it a bit ironic that during a timeout on the field a song was played that was way more vulgar than Osovets locker room talk. The f bomb was used while the rapper was describing all the things he was doing to a female. It is odd to me how an athletic director that shared the video on his personal Twitter and wanted to point fingers at Heritage allowed that to be played.

As the former (20yr) p.a. announcer for WB, this post saddens me greatly.  I assure you that the current p.a. guy nor the a.d. were aware in advance something like this was going to be played.  And I'm certain that one or the other of them will make sure it never happens again.  Sorry this happened.

I could see the Knoxville area publics beating the daylights out of everybody from Chattanooga to the Tri-cities.    Then knock each other around in the playoffs until somebody is left standing for the title game.

Wait a second ... isn't MARYVILLE between "Chattanooga and Tri-Cities"???

  9. I hate it just as much for basketball.  He would have been a solid piece of a WB team that might be the team to beat in their district next year.  Govs B-ball will still be upper tier in this area, but you're losing a kid who just set the all-time single game scoring record a couple of weeks ago.  Ouch.

The press box expansion was done during Meadow's tenure. A lot of people were all pulling in the same direction back then. I hope they make a good hire.

One of the reasons the press box was enlarged was to get coaches more privacy after Coach Meadow’s dad punched a media member during a game. It wasn’t all perfect and rosy during his tenure…but he did produce one of the best squads we’ve ever had.

As a Maryville fan having to listen to people WHINE about Maryville having some kind of advantage here on CoachT for over 20 years , it's amazing to me that any Maryville fan will now get on here and whine about some other team's advantages ... how about us Maryville fans acting like we've been here before and quit whining about Refs and other team's advantages !! Maryville's great tradition isn't just about winning , it's about Winning and Losing with CLASS ... Maryville means too much to me to just sit quietly by and let Maryville's reputation go to crap on here because a few people want to act like all the Whiners we've had to deal with these past 20 years . I know this will piss some people off and I really don't give a Dam . How bout no more whining and no more excuses for the rest of the week ??!!

Pepvol, I am reminded once again why you are one of my FAVORITE "Maryville Folk" of all time."  And yes, I've "whined" before, but never about you my friend.

Who ever Shadroach is I'm sure he is like most WB fans, tired of it. Most people don't say anything and just quit coming and let that be their voice. Then you have that few that will stand up and question it and want to know why. Some may want to keep an alias to possibly protect others. Me personally I was a Meadows fan because he is one of only two coaches in the 43 year history of WB that has brought any respectability to that program and the rest just hopped on board to get a check. That's why the program has less than a .300 winning percentage over 43 years. Right now Shad is batting .125 for the season and got his hands on the middle school program which was the only bright thing the school had and went 1-6 with a head coach of it splitting time there and the high school as a defensive coach.

    Barney,

Agree that Scott was one of our better coaches.  But I don't think you can blame WB for losing him, from what I gather, Catholic made him an offer he couldn't turn down.  I also agree that the easiest thing to do is just to quit coming or supporting (sort of similar to church sometimes) instead of speaking up.  But for me, if you're not willing to identify who you are, you lose credibility.  Obviously, Shadroach is either a WB insider--or knows someone who is--cause he/she knows stuff that everyone is not privy to.
