    "Consolidation" -- i.

    ËŒkänsəˈlÄdaSHn(É™)n/
    noun
    noun: consolidation
    1. The death blow to County football programs in Blount County
"Let's consolidate all these really good community schools that everyone's invested in for decades and build two huge cookie cutter schools that no one will care about. Kids can travel 16 miles to school and we'll sale out their futures for a little cash now.  Then no one will have any emotional connection or community pride in the big schools and they'll pay tuition for their kids to go to other schools. Then we can complain about other schools taking some of our good kids instead of them driving 16 miles to come here and be 1 of 1700 kids. "
synonyms: Sale out, bad idea, self destructive,
       , unsustainable
"I realize consolidation was a bad idea, but we're stuck with it, so let's justify it and blame other things for our problems"

I'm torn on this post.  There are certainly some valid and debatable points made.  I spent three years at Friendsville, then was part of the first class at consolidated WB.  I do agree that a lot of natural community affiliation was eliminated.  And the two schools (Heritage and WB) have struggled to build and "sustain" quality football programs.  But I stop short of saying "no one has cared about" the county schools.  From someone who has been somewhat invested in WB since it's inception, I've been privileged to know a lot of folks who have cared.

We base a whole lot of our judgement here on the football program.  And I believe the football program is headed in a good direction right now.  But there is a whole lot more going on at WB right now than football.  People can say what they want, and throw the rocks now, but the argument, "I'm sending my kids to Maryville or Alcoa because of academics" is becoming a reason that is harder and harder to argue.  In the next few weeks, information about national Merit finalists will become public. I hope everyone pays close attention to the # of finalists from each school ... you might be surprised.  And we've already seen what great strides are being made with ACT scores.  This makes me proud to be an alumni, without diminishing Maryville or Alcoa in any way.  It's awesome that we can say all of our schools are performing well academically.

We speak of community pride or emotional connection.  Well, this year's WB student section is as good of a high school student section that you will ever find.  And our current Administrative Team is as fine of a group of leaders that anyone could ever ask for in any school.

Do we still get mad when we "lose" kids to the city schools?  Sure.  We're human.  Not all of us are as immature or vocal as some are though and believe it or not, NOT ALL OF US hate and despise Maryville and Alcoa.  I am the youth minister to a group of kids that is 97% city of Maryville kids.  And I would kill for them.  But my one WB kid and my three Alcoa kids ...I'm just as proud of and love just as much.

I don't think the city schools "take our kids".  I believe parents take advantage of the freedom they have to send their kids where they think is best.  My goal for WB is for us to continue to convince parents that staying at home, if WB is where you're zoned, is a good decision.  Many know, this is coming from a dad who "chose" to keep  his three kids in county schools, when they could have gone to Maryville.  I never worried a minute about doing that, even though I know they would have received an incredible education and been around incredible teachers and coaches at Maryville.

So yes, 32Hammer, I too at times, regret and miss what it felt like to be a Friendsville Falcon, or a Lanier Eagle, or a Porter Panther, or an Everett Bulldog.  But it is what it is now, and I'M PROUD TO BE A GOVERNOR!

  2. In the "undercard" match-up this weekend in Blount County football, Heritage travels down to the Mike White Field to take on the Governors.

What do you all think?  Does the streak continue for WB?  Or does Heritage finally get a "long-awaited win" versus the Govs?

I'll hang up and listen ...

  3. AllRegion, I edited my post. I try to Never say anything remotely personal about an individual on the forum.  And while the post was vague , very tame and did not name a person or even a job title, after thinking about it, it was still something I was uncomfortable posting. Does that make sense?

Except that someone else quoted the original, so it stays out there for everyone on Coach T to see.

  4. I have several game film that I am having converted over. One of the films in the 1978 Alcoa vs Maryville game.Even though Maryville won that game 21 to 14 it was still a great game.Alcoa led 14-0 but with only 26 players on the team and only 15-19 players actually seeing playing time,Maryville just flat out wore Alcoa down.We are selling copies to players and fans. When I recoup my money back for the cost of the conversion we plan on donating any future money to Alcoa Football Boosters so we can put it into the recruiting slush fund. (lol)

Seriously though, the next film will be the '78 Alcoa vs Maryville. A good friend who played center for Alcoa in this game knows a lot of the Maryville players from that era and we thought we'd be nice and let them in on the action as well by doing the same thing and sharing on half the proceeds to donate to the Maryville boosters club also.I'll let you know when it happens and give you a way to contact me in case you want to spread the word to your cohorts. (lol)

    Mr Twister,

Just now catching up on this thread but ... would you happen to have a copy of Alcoa vs Friendsville from that '78 season?  I was on that Friendsville team.  We were both undefeated coming in, the Tornadoes prevailed 31-0 that night.  I would love to be able to relive trying to block Sam Love all night.

  5. Maryville 41-28. Maryville is a well discipline team that pays very close attention to details. Maryville vs Ravenwood i pick out several plays and rewind countless times. Maryville beats you with blocking schemes. Every team blocks well, duh, yes but, not to the extent of Maryville. Their Rb, Te, certain times are presented as blockers then turn into eligible catchers. Year after year, games after games, teams sitback in basic formation an let Maryville block scheme them to death. So, to Fulton and alcoa the only 2 teams on the rebels regular season schedule to pull this off, it takes a very athletic team. Don't watch the whole film on Maryville, pick out 5 plays and rewatch over and over. The strategy is all about advantages. Don't play a traditional nose guard, put a fast 2nd string rb at the nose guard position. The rb would beat their center everytime. The center will be so focus on not getting beat he will mess up the snaps. That creates pressure. Find the weak link lineman overload on him. Trust your corners for bump and run man covers. Run no safety. Disguise your safety into linebackers, their assignment is to cover the middle. Bring your linebackers down as linemans. The center is constantly getting beat, the weak link lineman is overload. That creates more guts than Maryville linemans can block. That keeps pressure all day. This always shows blitz but, break some plays off into coverage schemes. Ravenwood played man corners cause they didn't believe Maryville wide outs could beat them deep. They still kept 2 safety back jyst incase of a blown assignment. Maryville ran coverage zone that means they had the middle cover an left the flats open. Maryville wide out couldn't take advantage. My defense of course some plays there will be some open men, but, the created pressure you don't have enough time to find the open gaps. On offense run a clock management style game, meaning always have 3 plays called, an wait until ynder 3 seconds to hike the ball. That shortens the game. Get your biggest lineman an at least get him 8 carries, yeah he's isn't the fastest, but an automatic 4yrds. Last, but, not least study the Cincinnati bengals playbook. 3 down lineman 4 wide outs and trips on the other side. Of course all 7 men aren't eligible, but, the opposition doesn't know who and who isnt. Come out your clock management style so, the defense doesn't have time to digest what's, what. That creates lineman on wide outs, that leaves the defense with 1 free man. It so many countless opportunity out this formation. If you feel your qb is fast enough to beat the 1 free man then exploit that advantage. It's simple you play toe to toe with Maryville you get destroyed. It's all about unconventional trickery, finding weakness, keeping the defense guessing, taking away their advantages and playing it into your hands. Not every team can pull this mastery, just the alcoa, Fulton, and the teams after the 3rd round of the playoffs. And i approve this message.

You've given yourself away my friend.  You're the former head coach at South Doyle, aren't you?

  6. Can't wait to hear the excuses after this one.

Here's a thought ...instead of creating a thread where you can just take cheap shots at WB , why don't we actually discuss the football game? I can guarantee you that after the game you'll hear no excuses from me. I'm glad we are actually playing Alcoa. Great for our program . To get better, you've got to play better teams. This game will be a good measuring stick for our team.

  8. Gov91.....I understand that Shad added extra work to the kids donning bits of red attire at a recent practice. Does he not understand, or see what was happening? Simply put these warriors were morphing into Cardinals as the power was being instilled into them. Shad's refusal to accept this truth of WB's real identity is disturbing and I am afraid very damaging to WB. Initially, I was predicting a 5 plu win season for WB, but after this incident I see 3 as the most and potentially a 0-11 season. The Cardinal lives.....it is real, and until someone is able to open the Shad eyes to this creature of greatness the curse will continue.

    #AlinwickCardinals #thecursecontinues

ML ... three things I need to know from you:  1.  Do you think the Govs can beat Heritage this year?  2.  Do you think the Govs could beat Greenback?  and 3.  Do you feel safe parking your car at WB?

  9. Hey Boyz!

It is cute that you don't have a clue who I am and think that I am not a woman!  I know Marty Millsaps and I assure you, I am not him nor would I even date him!

Why don't you report me again!  Better yet, meet me at Wal-Mart and let's discuss!

I will see you in the fall on Lawrence Avenue!

    Love you boyz!

    s

    Hey Sweet Susie,

Just curious ... Did you ever provide any "under the table benefits" to any recruits?

  10. Does WB always sub like they did yesterday? That was an interesting concept and kept WB's girls fresh for the most part!

Yes, this is year two of the "chaos" concept.  When Coach Wright started doing it, I wasn't sold.  But after two really successful seasons, I'm on board.  You will see him "tweak" it every now and then, especially late in games when there are certain players he want's to make sure are on the floor.  I will say this, it is a PA Announcer's nightmare if you like to announce subs when they enter the game.  At WB, I finally just gave up on that idea!  :)

Excited about the future for WB.  We lost a good senior class, but overall our team is still very young.  Had a freshmen and several sophomores that were key contributors this year, along with a strong junior class.  Add to that, we will be getting some really talented freshmen in the program next year and it's exciting.

Of course, I noticed that OR had a lot of talented young players too.  That bodes well for Coach Green and her program, doesn't it?

  11. Very impressed with Oak Ridge.  They had a great "scheme" against WB and they were patient with it, and it got them a lot of easy buckets.  Obviously coached well and anytime it seemed like WB girls might be getting a little momentum back, the Ellison girl stuck daggers in us!  What a shooting performance from that young lady.

I believe they will be a tough match up for Bearden.  IF I was going to give Bearden an advantage, it would be that their post players may present more problems for OR than WB's did.  The guard match up's ought to be fun to watch.

For you OR fans that have felt disrespected, just remember:  "You're still playing ball, most of "our" teams are not"!  Good luck to the Lady Wildcats.

  12. I have Oak Ridge ahead of Willie B....Oak Ridge has gotten 0 respect all year...but here we are waiting to play for the Region 2 AAA Championship. Maybe a bit of respect now???? WB's girls played tough & had some of the best sportsmanship that I have seen all year , so props to WB on that.  Now let's hear again how OR isn't going to go anywhere due to their schedule.

I'm sorry ...could you please point out where I said A SINGLE WORD negative about Oak Ridge? The Lady Wildcats played a great ballgame. I hope they continue to play well on Wednesday.

  13. Is this topic still about the best teams in East TN? Anyone have a change of heart after district tournaments? I'll go with this:

    1. Morristown West

    2. Elizabethton

    3. South Greene

    4. McMinn Central

    5. William Blount

    6. Bearden

    7. Bradley Central

    8. Hardin Valley

    9. Union County

    10. Gatinburg Pittman

I'd have Bearden ahead of WB based on their 3-0 record against the Lady Govs this season. WB did outplay Bearden in district tournament championship but couldn't finish. I would also put Bearden and WB ahead of McMinn Central.

  14. Well there will be one powerhouse at the boro this year no one could say recruited unless you can say they started at 9 years old. That's Elizabethton. Here are most of their stars winning the 9u National Championship in North Myrtle Beach.
