  1. I think Tech got a steal. I personally thought Waters was D1 Major College material. His upside is unlimited I think.

I know the Vols closed strong on recruiting day, but for the life of me ... not only is Maryville an elite powerhouse ... but Coach Fulmer's girls go there!!! It looks like some of those guys winning those state championships would get noticed !!! Obviously, it would be a good P.R. move, but more than that, there's some guys that that could play on that level.

  2. Gary Turner, Sports Editor of The Maryville Daily Times in the early '80s, once said this about Mike White.

"If I were to stick my head out of the door of our newspaper office this morning, and see the Communist Army marching down Harper Street invading Maryville, Mike White is the first person I can think of I would want on my side to go to war!"

If you played for him or knew him, you understand why he would have said that. For those who only measure success by winning--and we're all guilty of that sometimes--you might question Coach's success at William Blount. But if success also involves teaching kids how to be committed to a cause; how to work hard everyday no matter what; how to be loyal to teammates; how to carry yourself with dignity; how to realize that life is more than just football ... well, then Mike White was as successful as any coach ever.

And to close, for those who have been around Blount County for a while, not only was Coach White a great coach, he was probably one of the finest athletes to ever come out of this area. He played liked he coached ... all or nothing. I'll always have an image in my mind of when he got intense and those eyes got as big around as silver dollars ... he could put the fear of God in you, but you knew that he loved you and cared about you.

God Bless you Coach. And God Bless Susan, little Mike, Nick, and Rachel.

  3. I know it's not a huge deal for a lot of you schools that send players to big college programs on a regular basis...

but we had a nice little signing ceremony this morning at William Blount.

Linebackers Josh Lawhon and Jared Rosenow signed with Indiana State University (D1 2A). Did it in the auditorium with team members, parents, grandparents, special guests in attendance. At least one of the Knoxville tv stations was there and a couple of newspapers.

It's a positive step for William Blount football and for head coach John Reid. Most likely, 4 - 5 more Gov's will sign at various other small school programs before it's over.

By the way, for you trivia buffs, WB did have one of their players go on to play for a D1-1A Southeastern Conference School a few years back. He played in at least one major bowl I think, maybe more. Who can name him?

  4. Anything by Barry Manilow;

    "In the Navy" -- Village People;

"I Did It My Way" -- Frank Sinatra

"Diamond Girl" -- Seals & Croft

"Afternoon Delight" -- i think that was Hamilton, Frank, & Reynolds"

All of these are heavy duty. Don't play them all at once or you might have an adrenaline rush so great that you are rendered incapable of functioning.

  5. A great shooter from the Maryville area, he played at Everett High School, was Kenny Teffeteller. I used to watch him play when I was a kid. He used to amaze me in warm-ups ... he'd shoot shot after shot, from way outside of what would have been the three-point line if they had had one, and I swear to you, a lot of nights he'd never miss a shot the entire warm-up time. Kenny played a couple of years juco, I think Roane or Walters State, then played finished out at UT.

Another name that comes to mind, never saw him play because he was a little before my time, is Bill Padgett. Padge may still be the leading men's scorer in Maryville college history and he did it without the benefit of 3 pointers.

We played Farragut my senior year (1980) and they had a guy who I think was an Elliott that could shoot the eyes out.

    This is fun.

  6. Bearden had another real good player ( I know they've had several) that came along right after Johnson. He might have overlapped him just a little ---I was thinking he was a soph when Jon was a senior. I can't recall his name.

Yeah, Johnson played for Lefty didn't he? Did he play at the same time Bias was there?

  7. Raider,

I agree with you ... you can't have a double foul in this situation ... it was either a charge or a block. I can understand a double foul perhaps when two players are fighting it out for post position and they both get carried away.

It can't be 'right' to call a player control and a block on the same play.

  8. RedReb,

You say, "if a player lives outside of the city and wants to get in on tuition, he/she must get on a long waiting list."

Jon Lawhon started school this year at William Blount and just before Christmas decided he wanted to transfer to Maryville. He transferred and enrolled at MHS (as a tuition student) in a matter of a few days.

    I must be missing something.

  9. William Blount vs South Doyle last week ... South Doyle player with ball runs into Wm. Blount defender. Referee on one side signals charge --- referee on the other side signals block. After short debate, the third referee of the crew walks over to scorer's table and calls "double foul" and then explains, "we have a player control foul on South Doyle's # so & so AND a blocking foul on Wm. Blount's # so & so."

I'm not the expert some of you are, but can this be? How can you possibly have a player control charge and a block on the same play?

What should have happened in this situation?

What is up with the Heritage Mountaineers? New coach, talented players, dedication, new work ethic, but the same record!! Dang, what is up!?! How come they can't even stay in a game for the first quarter!? Someone let me know! Where is Coach Wilson!?!?!?!?

Be patient !!! Your right about the new coach (and he's a good one), dedication, work ethic ...but there is just not a huge talent base there to work with. And by the way ... Coach Wilson is on the bench, assisting Coach Rines.

  11. OK ... it's been quiet around E. Tn for too long. I'll get you'all experts talking.

For the past several years, I've been hearing about Sade Buley of South Doyle. I've spoken personally to one of the top D1 women's coaches in America and he showered her with praise. I've talked to many people that have played and coached with her and against her in AAU ball and they've talked about her being as good as anyone they had seen for her age (this over various periods of time).

I've got to watch her play 5 - 6 times --in high school games--over the past three years. In that very limited amount of viewing time ... she has just not blown me away. It's obvious that she's been the greatest athlete on the floor ... that she can dribble and shoot ... but I've just not seen alot of intensity. To be fair, probably the games I've watched were not "big games" but ...

Those who do watch her a lot and know her game better than I do ... fill me in. Would I be way out of line if comparisons of Randy Moss's "I only play when I feel like it..." came to mind?

Don't hammer me too hard, I'm just wondering. When people who I'm sure know the game a lot better than I do talk about how incredible she is, I realize that I must just be missing something.

  12. TO BBALL MOM... THIS IS OFF OF AN AAU WEB SITE ...

There is, of course, an exception to the age rule, and it is based on a player's current grade in school. An 11U team is considered a 5th grade team; 12U is a 6th grade team; etc. The AAU "grade exception" allows a child who started school late to play on the same team with his classmates, so that a player who would ordinarily qualify for a 13U team but is still in 6th grade can play on a 12U team. There are limits to this exception. A player can play down no more than one age level (thus preventing the occasional 17 year-old fifth grader from running away with the MVP award!), and a single team can have no more than 3 of these grade exceptions.

I think 14U would be considered an 8th grade team.

    Not positive.

  13. Sorry guys ... I was not clear. THIS WAS A VARSITY GAME. Kite had 27 against WB in the varsity game. And WB is not that shabby !!!

BTW, Glasgow is a future star at WB. He may be the most gifted and developed freshmen post player that WB has had in quite some time.

  14. I got to watch one of the best freshmen boys I've seen in a while last night at William Blount. Stephen Kite of of South Doyle put on quite a show. I think he ended up with 27. Excellent ball handler, excellent penetration skills, great quickness, nice soft shot ... if I saw one weakness, it was the fact that he didn't appear to be able to go to his left real well (of course, against WB, he didn't have to, they couldn't stop him from going right!!!).

I look forward to getting to watch this young man the next few years.

  15. A NOTE CONCERNING CLEMSONDAD --- He might reside in Blount; his son might have played for the Mighty Maryville Rebels; he might be the most beloved--and the best--trainer in all of Maryville, Alcoa, and Blount County, but you want to rile him up ... start dissin' those Loudon Redskins. That's gettin' personal.

    Hey buddy. How's your boy?
