Many times, mat time, playing time are guaranteed if someone is brought into a program from the transfer portal.  Believe me when I say that deals are being cut every day.

That I understand. Askey and Oakley are also graduate transfers. Once these Covid years are over this portal stuff might settle down. Right now App St and Campbell are top 25 teams in the Country. Be interesting to know how many kids never start at the school they transfer to. It’s really high in football

If Jarvis could get in the lineup early and have a good season he could enter the portal for a much more high-profile program.  It's all about having great workout partners.

Or you could go to a high profile program and get stuck in the depth chart and never start. Grass isn’t always greener

Young man is from Alabama so maybe will stay, but who knows. I saw Askey (who beat Chittum at the NCAA's) and Oakley from App State, both NCAA qualifiers, entered the portal.

Fun fact, Hunter Mason (ex Greeneville alum and now at VT) came back from a 6-1 deficit to tie 6-6 and then pin Powe in the final minute of their semi-final match back in November at the Southeast Open.

Jarvis Little might have a good chance to start as a Freshman with Oakley going to the portal. Sean Carter red shirted this year for App St. He could be at 133.

    Heart Wrenching at any level.

    Check this out...

That’s really cool. I can remember when I was in high school early 90s Coach Bentley has a sister. She wrestled some when she was young and would beat the heck out of boys. As she got older she stopped wrestling. If there would have been girls wrestling then she would have been really good.

I never get on here and don’t respond to anything, but I got on here today to make a post about me trying to set up camps and clinics. I saw this and was disappointed and felt like responding.

First off, I've seen many of these posts before about talking about how disappointing it is that we don't have a Tennessee All-American almost every year on some sort of social media. Second, almost all of you haven't been a Division 1 All-American or even wrestled Division 1 at all. It was Cody's first year, and he lost two studs. He'll be back and all American, maybe even a couple times, no doubt in my mind. The next thing is, who cares if kids go to Division 1? If they can afford it, why not go chase your dreams? The only thing I'd say is don't go into a crazy debt to wrestle in college because there are other things that are more important in life, but if you can afford it and a D1 team wants it, go for it. It just annoys me when people act like it's an easy thing or all Tennessee guys are a disappointment each year because they weren't an All American when we are battling through so many injuries and I'm destroying my body and can't even stand up before weigh-ins because the weight cut is so hard on my body. Granted, I shouldn't have wrestled at 125 at all, but I'm just using it as an example. We are giving it everything we have, and I'm sure the other Tennessee guys like Cody and Cooper where to. It's just a hard tournament with countless killers in each weight. We should celebrate any TN guy that gets the opportunity to wrestle Division 1 or any level in college because it's most of our dreams to do that, and we are just trying to chase them

Enjoyed watching you wrestle at the SoCons. I’m an App St fan and you had a really good tournament. One my good friends I wrestled with in high school son is going to App St. He probably want get any money. May never start but he wants to compete everyday and go through the grind.

It was fun watching everyone pull against Campbell at the SoCons

I never anticipated this would be so hotly debated since exceptions only serve to prove the rule.  The general rule is most TN wrestlers don't fare well at the D1 level.  History lays that out pretty conclusively.  I think most would be better served at a lower level if wrestling is a priority.

But, just to make everyone really really mad I'll say it again lol.

    1. Most will not do well at the D1 level.
    2. Most should wrestle a lower collegiate level if wrestling is a priority and they wish to start.
    3. Some not small percentage of those who go D1 will last only a year or two and then quit wrestling completely.
    4. The truth for some would be better than a participation trophy (granted a stupidly hard participation trophy where even surviving four years is super rough).
    5. A small percentage will do just fine and a very small percentage might AA.

@WrestlingGod  The only yikes is you saying you watched a match you didn't.  Sorry, you lost all credibility on that one and that is another unlikable truth.

How can you they that though. Just because they don’t start on a team or do good at the NCAAs doesn’t mean they didn’t do well. That they aren’t a D1 wrestler. Go to a smaller level can also cost you way more money to go to school especially at the D3 level. Have you seen the breakdown of states that had AA this year. Heck Georgia just now finally had there 1st National Champion. GJil8OJXAAA5_Xn.jpg

So who are you to say who is D1 material and not. Please list the D1 talent you have recruited. Also please list the kids that went D1 that weren’t D1 material and should have gone D2 or lower. Since “most” shouldn’t have been there.

You are correct. Coach Bentley at App St took kid from NC who never won a State Championship in high school and he ended up being a AA when he left App St. There are a lot kids on a roster. Some may never be in the starting lineup. There job in the room is to compete for that chance and to make their teammates better. You can’t tell me that don’t make them a D1 wrestler if they are putting the work in.

Tennessee is improving, no doubt, but so is everyone else and this is what gets overlooked.  I was really pulling for Palmer to  squeak it out but that didn't happen. Brayden, if you read this, I enjoyed watching you wrestle, well done. Chittum had a weird tournament. A win over Teemer, who took second, in the regular season but that didn't translate when it mattered.  The loss to the App State guy was the ugly one. He is too old for the well he is just a freshmen chatter. I do think he will AA, likely next year.

I've said it before and it was a really unpopular statement but I stand by the statement that most TN kids who enter D1, if wrestling is the priority, would be better served at the D2, D3, NAIA, or JUCO levels. There is no shame in that and I don't know why it was treated as if I said our kids stink, they don't. There is a list of really good wrestlers from TN over the last few years who didn't survive but one or two seasons within D1.

I realize everyone wants to make a big deal about recruitment but I see signing as the easy part (in comparison), not the hard part.  The hard part is starting and winning, again, if wrestling really really is a priority.

How many TN kids are even the starter on their team within D1? How many have a winning record?

Askey for App St is a tough kid. Coach Bentley does a really good job at developing kids. That’s one reason I can’t wait to see how Little develops at App St. and what his career looks like. He can be a AA before he leaves I think

What does Carter Starocci have to do with the Ryder Downey other than they both know how to ride.

Because when you can dominate someone by riding mentally and physically it takes a lot out of the man on bottom. You aren’t going to be scoring a lot points against the best of the best on top.

IMO, Ryder Downey did absolutely nothing from the top position other than riding. Yes, I completely understand there is riding time but the top man must be working for a fall.

Carter Starocci says otherwise. That was a dominant ride of Griffith in the 2nd period in the Semis

  12. The 184 match last night at the SoCons was so good.True Freshman Tomas Brooker from App St taking out 3 time NCAA qualifier Hopkins from Campbell at the last second takedown to win the match. The True Freshman Powe kid from UTC match was really good at 141. Thought he was going to let it get away from him after starting out strong in the match.
