1. No, they probably could have played at the junior college level....but some people don't have the desire to play college ball, Asberry is a pharmacist now, Crouch has an accounting degree and Tompkins is in the military and has a history teacher degree. Ya know, just because you don't get a major college scholarship to be a good high school player. Those guys were all good high school players, Andy had over 1,000 pts and I'm pretty sure John is 6th or 7th all time at 1900 something points. Now points aren't everything but those guys lead there teams to two or three state tournaments, depending on which Class you are talking about.

I agree that all those guys were tough.

  2. I think its over....I don't think we will win another game this season.....we can, but I don't think we will. We had three games in a row that we really could have won (RBS, Van Buren, and Monterey) and we didn't. Listen folks, we've had games we played well, but the facts are the facts, and we haven't won a game since December during Christmas tournaments, that's sad. Now we've got one regular season game left, Clinton Co. KY, and these guys made it to the All-A state tournament last month in KY, so yeah, they are good....too good, probably better than anyone in our district. A group that is tough as nails....and if you think we are gonna get any calls in their gym, your crazy. Our team is soft, so soft it makes me sick to my stomach. I missed 5 games since I was a sophomore in high school, and I haven't went to the last three games, because I couldn't stand to watch this soft, unphysical basketball. I don't know what it is, maybe they've been babied their whole lives and everything has been given to them....maybe not.....Maybe its that they are so scared to get a T and then they'll have to run the next day at practice (which I think is dumb, takes away the passion), so they don't play physical or tough. I think if a Coach can get a T, then a player should be able to get one. If a player gets a T, you bring them over, you calm them down, you say you can't be getting any more T's and you say keep that fire and passion going. I remember when Andy Asberry and Josh Tompkins where player, they played with a passion, they were tough as nails, they were all over the court with their defense, and if they got a T so be it, Coach Mitchell or Coach Smith would set them down for a few mins, and then they were right back in there, all over everywhere. We better hope this team really toughens up over the summer, grows some, and learns how to score or we'll be right back in this same conversation again next year. I have confidence that Coach Bibb can turn it around, but it's gonna take a lot of hard work by our guys. We've gotta get a lot more physical strength that we don't have right now. Good luck to all the tournament teams, I'm not sure I can stomach watching the district tournament.

I asked this question on another thread but it never got answered. Did Asberry, Crouch, and Thompkins play college ball? Do you know what they are doing now? I agree about thier defensive ability. They were quick and athletic and all over the floor. I am not sure I agree about them getting technical's. I cannot remember any players on that team getting technicals but I could be wrong.

  3. Heresyoursign.....I don't think stating that "Parris" is the backbone of the PC program is crazy. What you said about him teaching the kids to play hard is true but to say he doesn't teach the kids to play smart is just simply wrong. I am not one to come on this website and get in an argument with someone but I have to ask you what are you thinking? Anyone that has been to one practice that James Parris runs knows that he focuses on the fundamentals. Did you play for him? Did your kids play for him? Where did you come up with this expert analysis that he teaches bad habits? I would like you to give me one an example of a bad habit that he has ever passed on to his teams. As far as your bad attitudes statement I'm not going to even touch it. I think it is universally understood that when you are dealing with teenagers you??™re going to run into a bad attitude. At least that has been my experience in the world that I live in.....not sure about the world you live in!

I would bet that if you asked any high school coach that coached players after James Parris got done with them any one of them would say they were thankful that he coached them. He taught the fundamentals, teamwork, work ethic etc. All the things you need to have a good basketball squad.

I am not trying to bash you.....I just want to understand how you come with the idea that he doesn't teach the fundamentals and teaches bad habits.

Another thing that struck me about your post. You said, "Please stay off the boards giving you NEGATIVE opinions about players....I am sure you were not very good sometimes either." You may need to think about practicing what you preach.

  4. Ok....I am going to calmly tell you to grow up big guy and stop criticizing people just because they have different opinions than yours. You have told both bobcat89 and myself that we don??™t know anything about Pickett County Basketball because we disagree with you??¦.that??™s childish! Second, flex was not a offensive set it was THE offensive set for half court. If we couldn??™t push the ball to run and gun then it was flex. There are so many different variations of flex that was all we needed. As far as you winning three ???junior high state championships?????¦.lol??¦.there is no such of a thing. The James C. Hail state tournament was by invitation only and was not a true state tournament. There are several junior high state tournaments all over the state so I wouldn??™t be telling people I won a junior high tournament unless you want people to think you are ignorant. I played basketball in Pickett County from third grade until I graduated and Steve Asberry never coached me??¦..that??™s all I??™m saying. I hope you are not trying to imply that Matt Walker should take over at the junior high level!

Ok.....I'm gonna calmly tell you that you know very little about PC basketball, because you didn't know that Steve Asberry ever coached jr. high boys and bobcat89 thought that Chip Buck was the head coach at some point then you all don't know much about it. You would have to be an idiot to argue with me about if Steve coached or not since I played for him. Or I guess I should say you know nothing of the history of PC basketball. I won't argue with you that flex was the only offensive set we needed in elementary school or in AAU, I totally agree that it was a good first have court set for us to learn, but at the Jr. high and high school level you need just a few more plays. You wanna say we never won three junior high state titles? Go look in the trophy case at the Jr. High. 2 James C. Haile titles and a TNT State Tournament title, 1 James C. Haile in 7th grade and the other two in 8th grade. I won't argue with you that there isn't more state championships than that, because I know there is. As far as the James C. Haile being invatation only, don't you think that means that we had to be good enough to get into that tournament? Listen, my jr. high classmates and I lost 3 games in the two years we played, and all three of those were in 7th grade, we didn't lose a game our 8th grade year. You must be from LA cause they are the only ones who would say that the James C. Haile isn't a true state tournament, listen they are all Invitational tournaments. Steve may have never been your coach, I'm not saying he had always coached Jr. High, because for a while he only coached the girls team, but from about the time that his oldest son Andy got to Jr. high he coached it. No, I'm definately not trying to imply that Matt Walker should take over jr high, Matt Walker shouldn't be allowed near a basketball court. But I have heard that Bibb would like to take over the jr high boys, but doesn't want to step on any toes, so he's gonna wait until Coach Parris is ready to step down. All I'm trying say is that the game has sort of passed Coach Parris by, and maybe it is time for the torch to be passed, at the jr. high level. I think Coach Parris is great for the elementary level.

Whatever! I am not going to play the name calling game that you seem to be so fond of. I never said chip buck was a head coach I stated that he was an assistant coach....bobcat89 did and they simply misspoke. I don't know where you got that I'm from livingston....I was born and raised in byrdstown and I played on the same team with the Asberry's, Tompkins, and Aaron and Steve never coached me at the junior high level. If he coached you thats great if you think that Steve is a good coach then I'm happy for you but you don't know what your talking about when it comes to quality coaches. The game has passed Coach Parris by? Your joking right? This just gives me more proof that you don't know what your talking about. As far as needing more plays at the junior high level....I disagree. I would rather have one offensive set that you can run many variations off of that my team knows really well than have a bunch of plays that my team can't run properly. If you believe that junior high teams need a bunch of different offensive plays then I can't find fault in that but I disagree with it. That doesn't mean i'm an idiot!

Just like someone else said on here the James C. Haile tournament was a state invitational tournament. There are like four or five across the state. There are teams that play in that tournament that are not good at all......they pay their money and they play its that simple. They did not go thru district, region, and state qualifers so it is not a true state tournament.

  5. yeah, we ran flex so much I could probably still run it today. but most of our teams got a lot of points on fast breaks, then if we didn't, the only offensive set we ran was flex. You think one offensive set is all these high schoolers have to run? No, so its different. You are kidding me about Steve never coaching boys right? My team won three jr. high state titles with him as coach? wow sounds like you know nothing about PC basketball. I'm not dissing Coach Parris in anyway, the stuff he teaches at the elementary level is key, but I think PC needs someone younger and more innovative at the jr. high level, I've heard Bibb wants to do it as well, so that he can develop his players more before they get to high school.

You have told both bobcat89 and myself that we don’t know anything about Pickett County Basketball because we disagree with you….that’s childish! 6. Coach Parris deserves some of the credit for all those teams, but not all of it. Coach Parris does a great job from the grades of about 3rd to 6th grade. Believe me, I know, I played for him. He is great at teaching kids the basics, such as defenses, full court presses, and other basics. Coach Parris doesn't really coach offenses. He does a great job of making the kids tough and getting them interested in basketball. He did a great job with taking us kids to all the AAU trips too. Where the difference is, is their isn't anyone at the jr. high level to teach offenses and take these kids skills to the next level. Steve Asberry did a great job of doing so for a long time. Thats where we are missing out now. Don't discredit what Charles Mitchell, Mike Buck, Eric Mitchell, Brent Smith, and Coach Bibb have done, they were and are all great coaches. I'd like to see any of us try and coach as well as they did. And do you even know anything about PC? Anyone from their would know its Mitchell with two L's. And Chip Buck has never been the Coach at PC, I'm guessing you mean Mike Buck. They were not just handed a team, they made it into what it was, their work hadn't been done what so ever.

It's funny that you say you played for James Parris and then say in the same sentence that he didn't teach offense. You must not have played very much. He made us run flex until we had nightmares about it. He introduced every team he had to the first set offense they had ever been a part of. He also introduced those teams to the run and gun style that Pickett County is famous for. Steve Asberry never coached the boys that I am aware of in junior high, Coach Zachary did. I agree that the coaches mentioned were good coaches. However, I do not think they would have been as successful as they were if Coach Parris had not been doing the dirty work at the elementary level teaching the basics.... and yes that means OFFENSE, defense, teamwork, conditioning etc. Chip Buck was an assistant coach but has never been the head coach.

  7. The best players is what is was, scoring went alot into that discussion. I have said Jo Amonette, Eric Mitchell and Eugene Paris where probably the three greatest of all time, I used them because of 1) Top 5 all time scoring, 2) Because they all led their teams to State titles and 3) They all three won Mr. Basketball Awards. As far as the best defensive player, I don't know really.....the best that I really remember and watched, was either Luke Mason, or Josh Tompkins....again those are really the only great ones I saw. Quickest I ever saw where either Andy Asberry or Tompkins.....best athlete, probably Adam Asberry. Again these are ones I have seen, I mean I'm only 22 so I haven't been around forever.....these are just the ones I remember.....who are yours?

When I was reading your post I couldn't help but wonder what happened to these guys you were talking about. Did any go to college and play ball? What are they doing now? I heard Mason was a manager for the University of Kentucky but I have not heard anything about the Asberry's or Tompkins what are they doing now? They all played on the same team if I remember right. I think they only lost one game in 2000 or 2001 in the regular season to Sparta in the Livingston Christmas Tournament in triple overtime if I remember right. That was a fun team to watch....they were all fast and unselfish.

  8. Ridgeway,

I refuse to agree to disagree because you are simply wrong......you have no desire to become a ref but you for some reason have the desire to question the character of the people that are willing to do the job. People that you do not personally know. In my opinion that speaks about your character. Like I said before, if you are not willing to do the job yourself you have no right to criticize those who are. And you still never answered my question......You said you have no desire to become a ref. Why? Because you can't take the criticism of being unfair and biased from someone like yourself?

  9. Ridgeway,

I simply have one question.......If you know so much about the game and how to teach kids to prosper why aren't YOU OUT THERE BLOWING THE WHISTLE AS A REF! Could it be that you are not willing to put your money where your mouth is and practice what you preach? Or could it be that you are afraid that your ego could not take insults from someone who disagreed with your calls. You people that are constantly complaining about the refs kill me! I don't think anyone that is not willing to walk to a mile in another man's shoes have any right to criticize the people who are willing to take that responsiblity with all the good and bad that comes along with it.

So in summary my question is (i'm willing to bet that you can't come up a legitimate answer ) .....WHY DON'T YOU BECOME A REF?

  10. "You must be one of those "cheating" referees. Thanks for teaching the kids whom you cheat a lesson - that no weapon formed against them shall prosper - and that includes you."

That is absolutely the dumbest statement I've ever heard......HEY I HAVE AN IDEA! Why don't you become a referee and teach these kids how to PROSPER!......LOL ( I BET I KNOW YOUR ANSWER...) NOT ENOUGH GUTS?

  11. Pickett has been there 5 out of the last ten years with two titles so Temple needs to get their facts right and get some class. I guess they don't teach that at Temple. Since the strenght/success rankings are based on FACTS and not opionions, why is Temple only #3 and Pickett is STILL #1, if we have such a weak schedule? Play Monroe Co, KY, Station Camp, York, Clay Co., Livingston, Ezell Harding, East Robertson etc. and then talk...your schedule with Moore Co, Sale Creek, David Brainerd, 21st Century, Copper Basin is the #89 schedule...nearly the weakest in the state, while Pickett's is #18.

As for York, this is always a tough and close game and is a small A school against a AA school. This could be close, especially if the Bobcats play like they did last week.

    825515169

The bobcats don't have two titles in the last ten years....... they won it in 95 and 90..... thats 15 years not 10.

  12. From an umpire's perspective, I can tell you the two things we want in a game.  Strikes and Outs.........for both sides.  I imagine most refs want the seconds to tick away as fast as they can.  Blowing the whistle only prolongs the game.

Answer this question honestly.  Why would a referee hold a grudge against a coach, player or team?

    825515176

If they are professional they won't.

  13. dont even try and turn it on muffin...we answer your question and you decide not to answer ours and keep getting smart with us....you told me i was answering a question with a question so i went and answered yours, but now you answer my question with a question.....

    825515138

so that gives her the right to call me names right!??..... I'm not a ref

  14. If anyone has had a bad ref experience chances are it's with a ref named "Randy" he's a tssaa ref and he also refs a bunch of rec league games.  He's a white guy with greyish salt and pepper hair. Maybe in his late 30's or early 40's. This guy is horrible and really takes things personally. He has a really bad reputation in rec leagues. He's called fouls on me before when I was a foot away from the guy and never even touched him. It's unbelieveable what this guy will do if he has a grudge against a player on your team or your team. I've never arugued with his calls and just took my lumps no matter how unfair. He make comments like "yeah right" when our players shoot. He's single handedly derailed many of our games.  It's just really sad how prejudiced this guy is. We even switched leagues one year hoping to get away from him and half way through the season he showed up and made the rest of the season miserable. We were talking to another friend of ours and he was going on and on about how this one ref in their league was horrible and we jokingly said "RANDY!" and he said "Yes, that's the guy!" This is the kind of guy that gives refs a bad name.

This thread is not meant to single people out.......!

  15. Don't get me wrong - I am not taking sides with fans - and placing blame on officials.  Both have an equal share in my mind.

I am concerned about scoreboard calls however.  I was at the Franklin Centennial tilt last friday night, and the officials were horrible - both ways.

What became apparent however, was that as the game was getting one sided on the scoreboard - ticky tack fouls were called on the team on the right side of the score.  The same foul occurring at the other end, and in a few cases near mugging, went uncalled.

As the game went on, the officials were calling things  - no one saw!  Both ways.

The game was too fast for these three, and before you knew it 48 fouls were called in the game!  This does not account for the countless travels and lane violations.....

    825515091

I don't by the whole issue of equal fouls called between two teams either....If one team fouls alot that doesn't mean the other team does....... I hear people all the time talking about........ they had 8 fouls called to our 20 thats not fair........YES IT IS FAIR!........ if your team doesn't know how to play defense and goes out and hacks thier opponents to death you can't blame the officials.

I'm confused about the travels and lane violations you are talking about...... are you saying thier were to many called or what.

  16. It has been my experience that many fans consider it a lack of consistency when the calls don't "always" go thier teams way........ that is what gets me......

To say that refs are unscathed by their errors is just wrong..... If a ref gets the reputation of not calling good games he doesn't get assigned games...... not to mention puting up with all the B.S. they take from the fans because they are not being "consistent."

You people know the kind of person I'm talking about...... the ones that complain about the calls when it is clear that the right call is made....... these to me are the ones that have ruined the games...... I rarely go to basketball games anymore for this very reason. I can't stand to see people scream and cuss at the officials when 90% of their calls are the correct calls.

  17. Listen guys, I don't know or care why you two are at each other's throats but please take this elsewhere. Don't get this thread locked down on ruined for everybody else. Thanks

    825514898

Your right Pantherbert, I'm done with muffin.... I lost my temper when she started calling me names and I shouldn't have. I apologize for sinking to her level and I hope the moderators don't shut the thread down.

  18. I was reading the officiating topic and I couldn't help but laugh at the ignorance of some of those posts! This is only my opionion so take it with a grain of salt. I think if you don't have the courage to walk a mile in a person's shoes you have no right to belittle someone else for doing a job you are not willing to do yourself.

  19. Hey Butter, I think you might be whining about people who question the refs. By the way, Maxout eats his Wheaties and he is a pretty good sized boy. I think this years refs are the worst as a group that I have seen in many years, so there is you an "opinion".

    825503757

    [/quote

    Wildcat,

Instead of crying about the ref's why don't you do something about it! Become a ref and make all the right calls and please everyone! Answer me one question, Why won't you ref? Don't tell me you don't have time because that is not true...... You have time to get on this website and run your mouth about the refs so...... YOU HAVE THE TIME! In my"opinion" if you don't have the GUTS to do the job you don't have the right to knock the people that are willing to do it.

  20. i have refeered before and its not easy...but you should keep it fair...

you are tellin people to quit whining when that is precisley what your doing????

    hello pot.....im kettle thumb

    825503029

    Maxout,

I wasn't whining and by the way you need to learn how to spell big guy! I simply was stating my opinion about people running thier mouths about the officials. So go eat some wheaties and grow up little guy!
