  1. Ha you beat Maryville then brag. Just in case you hadnt noticed there is no team in the state of TN that can beat maryville and brag. I dont know 60 in a row is kind of impressive. Lets see your A,AA,AAA team schedule maryville. I believe Alcoa is the only team playing up to play maryville and they are playing up 2 classifications. Atleast they have enough about them to play the maryvilles of the world. Even when they dont win it gets them better down the road. After playing a team like Maryville, playing anyone in AA is pretty much nothing. Two years ago Alcoa playing in close games to Maryville (17-14 L) and Fulton (24-21 L) helped them when they were playing a team like McCallie, who had B.J. Coleman, had beaten Riverdale the week before and went to the private state championship game. Win or Lose, the Maryville game is a win-win for the Alcoa football program. The kids get a chance to play in front of 12,000 people with a crazy game week and game day atmosphere and they play the best program in Tennessee and it makes them better.
  2. Actually its harder for an alcoa back to get yardage because of the competion. Alcoa is usually so far ahead of the 2A teams they play against that it is hard for those backs to get as many carries as a lot of other backs. If you watch what coach rankin does, he usually pulls his starters to get reps for younger guys. Last season both Hodge and Toney had to average double digit ypc just to get to 1000 yds with QB Cobb also getting enough carries to break 800 yds. I think Garner will still lead the county in rushing yds because he will get a large percentage of his teams carries and hes that good of a back. I think WB coaches realize that for them to be a success this season they cant put the ball in the hands of Zach Whitt or the Burton kid but get it to Garner as much as you can, in as many different ways as you can and let him make plays. While Toney could very well end up being a 1500 yd rusher he will no doubt be sharing carries with Soph Tb Darrell Warren and Alcoa QB Chase James.
  3. the 13 points scored in the first half were on alcoas starters. 42-13 at the half is not that great
  4. I believe Fri. the 8th Alcoa, Farragut, South Doyle and powell will scrimmage
  5. Jaron toney, over 1000 yds, 12 ypc as a soph and darren garner. I think garner came close to 2000 yds didnt he?
  6. James does have the most experience but he didnt start spring hill, Cobb did. James came in during the 2nd quarter. He has look great over alcoas scrimmages. Which ever qb wins the job at maryville will no doubt be great under the direction of quarles. If I have heard correct, the qb at heritage this up coming season was set to be soph tyler hartley who has since transferred to alcoa and is working behind james, tallant and sharp.
  7. Watching Alcoa, I thought they looked very sharp on offense. Didnt know what to expect from chase james throwing the ball this season but he has looked very impressive so far. His strenght coming in was thought to be his ability to run the football from the qb postition but he has shown that he is a qb that is more than capable of putting the ball in the air. He connected with sam thompson on 4 long tds and SE brother walker on 3 more tds. He also had great chemistry with tyler robinson, hitting him on a few nice balls. Really impressed so far with the playmaking ability of alcoas wr's. Thompson and Robinson were givens but Walker, Soph. steven isom, Daniel rockymore, daniel robinson and Fr chaz vesser have all looked great. I also thought that the cleveland football team looked very athletic and the qb for them was also impressive. they had one wr who seemed to be around 6'4 who went up and caught the ball very well. They look like a team to watch out for.
  8. Alcoa did a lot of good things. I thought they looked good, especially after only a couple days of practice. You can tell the talent and playmakers are there. Chase James made a number of good throws to Tyler Robinson, who caught everything in sight and also to Sam Thompson. Thompson had two long tds and Tyler Robinson caught another. Chase showed that he can makes some great throws but his obvious two biggest assets were taken away, which are qb run and then turning around and handing the ball to jaron toney, taharin tyson and darrell warren. The player that probably opened the most eyes was soph wr steven isom, the nephew of former alcoa qb michael george. Isom is about 6'1 and made some great catches including one amazing catch in the back of the end zone for a td. Alcoas offense is not well suited for a passing league game or passing scrimmages because most of their passing game is based off play action but it was good to see the coaches stick to their plan with running their offense and getting better although they probably knew that with a passing game based on getting LB's lost in traffic with boot and draw fakes the defense probably had a bit of an advantage because they didnt have to respect fakes. The defense for alcoa did a pretty good job with an impressive spread offense from WB. Daniel Cline, who is looking to replace troy hodge at lb at 2 ints.
  9. The 7 on 7 actually ended up being good work for all three teams. They used half a field for most of the night until the last series of the scrimmage for each team. It went a lot like you would expect after only a couple days of football since the dead period. Alcoa at times had some really nice scoring drives with chase james throwing a couple tds to thompson and robinson apiece. You can tell that the kid has ability to make the throws he needs to make for alcoa to have a good season, however there were times where you could tell that this was the first live action. Soph wr steven isom also made an amazing catch in the back of the end zone for a td and also caught another. The biggest hurdle for alcoa in passing scrimmages is that almost all of their passing game is based off play action and in passing leagues backers usually dont honor run so kind of hard to get a great look. On defense alcoa was caught out of position on a big td pass by WB. From WB i saw what i thought i would see, Darren Garner is freakin fast as crap!!!!!!! Their passing game right now, like alcoas will get better as they continue to work but its obvious that the game plan for wb should be find as many ways as possible to get the ball to garner. If the cope kid is number 11 then i thought that he looked like a player as well and nees to get the ball in his hands when its not in Garners. I saw alcoa transfer whitt playing a lot with wb's first unit but honestly didnt look as fluid and comfortable as number 5 running the offense and making the throws. WB fans who is the number 5 kid that lined up at qb? On defense Wb allowed alcoa (Thompson) to get into the 3rd level and behind the secondary a couple times but again i think that is more a result of just not having live looks this summer til this point. I really believe once you mix in both of these teams running games they will be very dangerous on the offensive side of the ball.
  10. From what i hear lewis is a smart kid who has picked up the offensive system pretty quick which will give him a chance to play a lot for the j.v. and freshman teams this season. He was one of only two freshman skill players who played in last nights passing scrimmage against william blount. Over the next few years he should develop into a really nice wr/db for alcoa.
  11. I was watching alcoa practice today and freshman chaz vesser absolutely put on a display at wr. Ive heard that he was good but he pretty much wowed most of the team today. Vesser and Isom both had outstanding days today and im looking fowardto watching these guys along with sam thompson. From what i hear vesser, whos close to 6ft is moving fast up the depth chart.
  12. Not a true 4-3. He will line up at the corner at times but he is actually a tornado linebacker
  13. QB-james TB-toney FB-herbert/tyson FL-thompson SE-walker, brother walker is the starting split end. TE-robinson, womac T-hopkey/burchfield T-hickman G-marsh G-evans C-miles DE-robinson, womac T-hickman, kerr LB-miles LB-herbert LB-toney LB-n.robinson c-jaron toney c-james s-thompson
  14. Thompson also just got an offer from UTC over the weekend
  15. Okay , did i say they offered him a scholarship, NO. I said they offered him. This could mean a spot on the roster, which is what it is. You dont believe me then ask sam or any coach on Alcoas football team. Better yet just read the article on scout.com titled DB hoping to gain some attention hstennessee.scout.com/2/764511.html
  16. I dont know that its clear cut fact that Jordan is better than Thompson as a WR. Thompson did manage to catch balls for close to a 30 yd average with 14 tds last season and was named all-state as a wr not a db. UT Martin wr coach marcus satterfield said he was the top wr on their board. I also know that both wofford and harvard have offered sam as a wr. With over 20 tds the last two seasons Thompson is a legit wr, maybe not as athletic or fast as jordan but none the less a very good wr, along with jordan and cope.
  17. I think the games start around 9:00 a.m. sat morning. I believe knox central will be there, a small christian school named david brainard also. those are the only other two im sure of
  18. There will be 25 teams playing 5 games each in a round robin type setting. Alcoa, cleveland and farragut are just a few of the teams that will be there. The format will be like that of a early fall scrimmage with each team getting 10 plays no matter the down and distance. Each game will last 50 minutes.
  19. Alcoas sam thompson has received his first two offers, from woffard and harvard
  20. http://www.kentucky.com/283/story/440545.html
  21. WB has two alcoa transfers on their team this year I believe. Dustin Owens and Zach Whitt. Owens wouldnt have played a lot but whitt would have probably been their starting free saftey as a soph this year. Does anyone know how these two young men are doing at wb so far? good luck to both of them.
  22. I will agree that two of those losses were but kickings but in 2004, the 31-17 game. At one point in the second half alcoa acutally had a chance to take the lead on a pass in the end zone that was dropped by brandon warren. But one of the others, the warren-less tornadoes, wow they got hammered that game. Not reids finest moment as a coach. And last years game was a good game in the first half,21-14 at the half. The very thing that alcoa does to 2A teams, maryville did to them. They wore them out. At that point Taharin Tyson and Darrell Warren two key members were in their second games, and the first game was cut out at the half. Chances are Alcoa wont beat maryville anytime soon, unless they can develop a deep bench with not much of a drop off.
