  2. A new football classification plan that will be recommended at the TSSAA on Monday. The largest 32 schools in enrollment will be placed in Class 6A for football. As a result, all 32 teams will advance to the playoffs.

The remaining schools will be placed in 8 regions in 5 classes and the top 4 teams from each region will advance.

If approved, the plan will go into effect in 2015.

    Opinions? Thoughts?

  3. Since '03, the Canes have posted a regular season record of 52 wins vs 48 losses. Having said that, do not overlook this program. These young men are playing with pride this year compiling a 9-1 season; a complete turn-around from last year's 1-9 record. Their only loss came against Sevier County in 10-14 game here at Burke-Toney.

  4. In districts 1-4, Sullivan South and Catholic are moving down and Gibbs is moving up. That leaves 32 teams to split among the four districts so they should be balanced with 8 schools in each one. Cherokee will move to district 1 to replace S. South. Gibbs will join district 2. One of the schools in district 3 will be moved to district 4. The traditional dividing line between these two districts has been I-40. Over the years the TSSAA has gone across the interstate to pull a school one way or another to balance the numbers in the two districts. Catholic was the latest example. Geographically speaking, Hardin Valley is the closest to I-40, so I would expect them to move to district 4.

South does, however, have the option to remain at the 5A level. If they choose to do so, I seriously doubt any change will occur in districts 1 and 2 (AAA) regardless of the fact that Morristown East will be 6A.

  5. Of all the teams in AAA Districts 1 and 2, S-D has the top ranked defense in terms of points allowed (28); although, it's worth noting that their three opponents have a combined record of 1 win and 12 losses. West will be their first true test on all levels. Regardless, I would like to see the Trojan D improve in time for the stretch run toward the playoffs. Allowing a minimum of 25 points a game does not bode well with the Patriots, Bears, and Eagles looming on the horizon.

Hope the Cherokees and their fans have safe trips up and back tonight and an injury-free game for both teams.

    Go West

    Roll Tribe. Beat Boone.

  6. Cherokee at Hamblen West (by 13) ... Both West and Science Hill will be 3-0 next week

Cocke County at Seymour (by 10) ... The Eagles continue their strong start

Jefferson County at Sevier County (by 6) ... Bears win but in a close one

Hamblen East at South-Doyle (by 7) ... East falls to 0-3

  7. I believe West will get to choose because they would be the higher seed. In 2006 West choose to play at Carson-Newman and let East play at Burke-Toney because the field conditions at Burke-Toney were awful. West ended up playing all 3 of their home playoff games at CN. But because of the new synthetic surface I think West would choose to stay in Morristown and let East travel for a home game in this situation. Burke-Toney has had serious renovations since 06 and is now almost as nice as CN's stadium.

This may be a moot point. East still must travel down to Sevierville on Friday to play the Smokey Bears and I just don't see the 'Canes coming away with a win down there. A loss would probably sink their right to a home game since they are already a 4th seed in Quad 1 this week.

If both West and East are able to play their 1st round games at home, though, would the TSSAA allow one to play on Friday and the other play on Saturday?

BTW, Quad 1 just got significantly tougher with the addition of Powell and Knox West.

  8. Some others not listed on your consolidation/merger page on hsfdatabase from Sullivan County:

Blountville Tigers - blue and gold, fielded football teams 1963 thru 1967 seasons, consolidated into Sullivan Central 1968

Holston Institute Eagles / Holston High (Blountville, TN)- non-football school consolidated into Sullivan Central 1968.

Bluff City non-football school consolidated into Sullivan East 1969.

Mary Hughes H.S. (Piney Flats, TN)non-football school consolidated into Sullivan East 1969.

Holston Valley Rebels non-football school consolidated into Sullivan East 1969.

I don't know if you have these from Sullivan County; if so, sorry for the repeat...

Sullivan High School Pirates (blue, gold)

Ketron High School Wildcats (blue, white)

Lynn View High School Lynxes (green, white)

  9. I took the new enrollment numbers that came out last week along with the first proposal of 3 classifications with 16 districts that came out this past June. Some schools changed, but it was still pretty close. When the first proposal came out, it had Sullivan Central in this district. When the new enrollments came up, Central was bumped up to AAA and will be in the 5A playoffs.

Betsy new enrollment for this re-alignment was 761

    Johnson County 723

    Happy Valley 614

    Sullivan North 638

    Unicoi County 756

    Sullivan East 989

Central was 1069, so they were moved to AAA

Rumors have it that Greeneville may be trying to persuade the TSSAA to be placed in the upper east TN district rather than join Grainger Co., Union Co., Pigeon Forge, et. al. Just a rumor, though.

  10. Elizabethton may not have a choice but to play in AA. The way it looks now, District 1 6A will probably have Sci Hill, D-B, and Boone while 5A should have Crockett, TN High, Volunteer, South, Central, & S. East. That's 9 teams total which means each district team must play their 8 regular season games with each other. I can't see the TSSAA allowing any more teams in a district than that.

Greeneville on the other hand would probably be allowed to move up from 4A to 5A in District 2 if they request such. I have District 2 looking like this: 6A - Jefferson County, Sevier County, M. East, and M. West (although West appears to be at or very near where the dividing line between 6A and 5A may be), 5A - Cocke County, Cherokee, Seymour, and Greeneville (from 4A).

My fault but I overlooked Campbell County in my lists. I am projecting them to be with Sci Hill, D-B, and, (uh), DB in the new District 1 6A alignment with an enrollment of 1,437.

They may also have to establish two districts just for the Knoxville area. I project seven 6A schools (Bearden, Farragut, Wm. Blount, Heritage, Maryville, Karns, & Oak Ridge) and eleven 5A schools (Powell, K. West, S. Doyle, K. Halls, Lenoir City, K. Central, Carter, Gibbs, Fulton, Clinton, and Anderson County).

  11. Cocke county is struggling...So wat do you think the outcome will be for the Boone @ Cocke Co. game??

Combine the Big Red's offensive problems and Boone's drubbing by South last week, it doesn't look good for Cocke County even thought the game is in Newport. It doesn't get any easier for the remainder of the season, either. Boone gets the win, improves to 2-1 in the region, and stays in the hunt for a playoff spot.

  12. I wonder how flexible the TSSAA is going to be when it comes to schools wanting to move up? I imagine some schools in NET would try to avoid playing down in AA. (Elizabethton and Greeneville in particular)

  13. Your understanding of East & West football is alittle off. Morristown West had more Talented

players than East, for the last 10-12 years. Morristown West should have won those games, they had better

players. I not saying Some years the Talent wasn't even. East did win 2 times, out of the last 11 games.

Why do you think Morristown East fans are not confidence in beating West? As a fan, I think we will win

every game. The town is divided by South Cumberland. The better athletes lived on the westside of town.

That has all change now, with the growth of East Hamblem Co. The talent is more spread out.

East's chances of winning this year,is awhole lot better than last year. East had all kinds of injuries, the whole

backfield was sophomores, in 2007 game.

Score: Morristown East 28 Morristown West 7 Go Canes!

Except for the score prediction, the above is a pretty fair assessment. The only team that has held West's offense to 7 or fewer points this season has been Catholic and I don't think East's defense is at the same level as the Irish. Since the opener, the Trojan O has shown the ability to score and score often.

With that said, however, take away the Crockett score and the West D has given up an average of 27 ppg. That's just about what the Canes O is averaging per game so far although East has one of these weakest schedules around (Canes' SOS = .346). Regardless, I agree that this is East's best opportunity in a while to take the County Championship (the city has no school system, remember!). So, assuming there's no significant turnovers or excessive penalties by either, I can see this game as being one of the most entertaining to watch in a long time.

Good luck to both and get there early if you want a seat! I'll say East 28 West 24.

  14. If I understand the likely reclassifications, the Indians must play:

    THS

    South

    Science Hill

    Boone

    Crockett

    Volunteer

    others ?

Certainly, Betsy will drop as they and North are big beneficiaries of the reclassification.

I would assume D-B would want to keep Sevier Co, Jeff Co, and OR. That would give them one big out of conference game. But I would not preclude the Indians scheduling other closer teams like M-East, M-West, or

G'ville. Also Halls might be an option. In this, as in a lot of things, the band will probably decide.

Using the enrollment numbers curently shown on the TSSAA's web site, District 1 may look like this:

    6A - Sci Hill, D-B, & Crockett

    5A - Boone, Tennessee, Volunteer, S South, S Central, & S East

If that holds true, then each D1 school will have to play eight district games....that just leaves 2 openings for non-district play. That seriously reduces options to continue traditional rivalries. If the intent of all this is to reduce travel expense then a lot of those slots may be filled by teams from District 2:

    6A - Jeff Co & Sevier County

5A - M East, M West, Cherokee, Cocke County, Seymour, & Greeneville (probable to play up).

I do not know if this has been mentioned yet but one outcome of the changes due next year may be schools deciding to move up a tier because the chances of qualifying for a playoff spot may be greater than the tier in which they are placed. District 2 would be a prime example of this if one of the 5A-to-be schools moved up to 6A; the chances of making the playoffs would be better against 2 teams than 5 although, by stepping up, the level of competition (D-B, O Ridge, etc.) rises as well.

  15. No offense, but outside of a few of those schools that would be an awful conference. Seymour? Cocke? Cherokee? Those teams aren't even competitive in the smaller classifications where they reside now. With us being "strong armed" in to playing bottom feeders like these and only one other (6A)5A school in the region we will have to schedule the NFC East just to qualify for the playoffs. By the way, hope the gas savings are worth it because some of those gates won't pay the water bill to flush the urinals. Thanks T$$AA for trying your best to kill HS football.

No offense taken but if I am reading the changes right, then at least one of you (Sevier or Jeff) automatically qualify for the 6A playoffs each year anyway since there are only two of you in the district. Also, if both 6A teams finish 1st and 2nd in the district, then both are automatically qualified for the playoffs. That appears to me to be a lot better opportunity than the 5A teams will have in district 2.

  16. I really hope that East can find a way to win this game, but I do not feel very good about it for East (again, I am a West fan, but always pull for the home teams). I have looked at the information that is available (cannot find yards per game or any of that statistical data -- which is a real shame -- someone should make a 5 Rivers Web site with the information available to everyone -- see the Mountain Lakes conference Web site it is great) and have found the following:

ME has scored 49 points or 24.5/game and allowed 24 points or 17/game -- their opponents have a record of 0 wins and 5 losses.

Jeff has scored 82 points or 27.3/game and allowed 80 points or 26.7/game -- their opponents have record of 5 wins and 3 losses.

On paper both teams are extremely even, with Jeff getting a slight nod due to the teams they have played. If this was West's open week I would be at this game. I really think it will be a classic with two good teams playing hard the entire night. I hope that both teams have a good game, no injuries and a Cane win.

    Conerns for East:

    1. East has given up a total of 34 points and has an average winning margin of 7 ppg against two teams that are currently 0-4 overall;

    2. East has the lowest strength of schedule (.333) of any team in either the MLC or 5 Rivers Conf. as of this writing

    Concerns for Jeff:

    1. How quickly and effectively can the offense adapt w/o McFall;

    2. Offense has only scored 20 points in each of the last two games;

    3. Omitting Karns, the remaining region one opponents have a combined record of 9 wins and 2 losses

  17. The IMAC (Inter-Mountain Athletic Conference) became the Fiver Rivers Conference in the mid 90s.

I'm not sure of the rivers that make up the conference. I've never read of anything alluding to their names. If I had to guess, I'd say Holston, Watauga, and the Nolichucky. It's confusing because every team in the IMAC, with the exception of Morristown West and Cocke Co., have played in the Mountain Lakes Conference (Region 1 4A).

Sevier County, Carter, and Jefferson County have also played in the IMAC.

The Big Six became the Mountain Lakes Conference in 1995 with the following teams: Elizabethton, Tennessee, Sullivan South, Sullivan East, Sullivan Central, Greeneville, Cherokee, Daniel Boone, and David Crockett. The last four teams are currently in the Five Rivers, so the name may not have anything to do with current members.

In 2009, the Moutain Lakes Conference will go back to being called the Big 7. Hopefully the Five Rivers will go back to the IMAC.

FYI - The five rivers are generally considered to include the Clinch, French Broad, Holston, Nolichucky, and Powell Rivers although the Powell could easily be substituted by the Pigeon.
