1. I am a high school coach and summer baseball is very important for my program. It really is the only time to work with younger players (especially those who will see an increase in playing time the next season). Without summer baseball it would be hard to get a look at some kids. Especially with our hands being tied the way they are with fall baseball. I also am not a big fan of a kid abandoning his hs team in the summer to travel exclusively. I think it kinda sends a wrong message to his teammates (the i am too good to play with you message). Its tough to build a "team" that way. If a kid travels a lot I still want him to be present with the hs program some in the summer.

Now trust me, I understand the value of some travel baseball and my kids seeing better competition. I have kids on my team that play on travel teams as well. The way I like to set it up is for our high school team to play Mon-Thurs and let the kids who travel go with their teams on the weekend. That way we kind of get the best of both worlds. If a kid has a week long tourney somewhere with his travel team we can work around that.

  2. For schools that must share players, the smart coaches are the ones that get together and work it out. Otherwise some of the best athletes play one sport while other good athletes play another. The result is no program is as good as it can be. Baskeball and Baseball can easily share guys. I agree with some above posts that football begins in July.

  3. I probably do.

Summer school is for the betterment of a students education or an opportunity to retake something(Teachers are getting paid to offer a service that they received professional training to do so).........I agree that a coaches time is worth more than they are paid already, but if HS coaches are worrying about earning a paycheck in the summer, then maybe they should look into other endeavors besides a HS Summer Baseball Coach.

This is an interesting thread. I am curious to know how many baseball coaches get extended contracts. Where I am at it happens for basketball and football but not baseball. No money for summer.

For some reason though I tend to believe that people who share your beliefs would be the first people in line to complain if your coach looked into other endeavors in the summer and did not run a summer program.

  4. He left Florida because he was teaching at an inner city school in Orlando that was not safe for his children so he was trying to take a job where the school system is better for his children. If you have been to the part of orlando that he was at you would completely understand. As far as leaving Cumberland County High School that goes a whole lot deeper - let's just say politics are king in the county. There is a ton of angry posts on this on crossville forum concerning the politics involved in this issue and an article on the front page of the paper of the crossville chronicle about it. His entire team loves him and is still fighting to try and get him to be able to stay. In the end if you read the newspaper article and the forum postings you will see that there is something special to Coach Eggleston for a community to rally behind someone like they have here.

After getting to know Coach Eggleston you know three important things

    1. He is going to work his butt off for your children and will get the most out of whatever talent a team has to offer.

    2. He is going to build your program the right way and will have a very well disciplined team.

    3. You would be lucky to have your child play for him.

Coach Eggleston would be a great hire for anyone that could get him. I have worked with him for the past 3 years and he has done great things with very little talent at Cumberland Co. It is a shame that the DOS is running off such a great coach. (Principal recommended him for tenure and DOS overruled her decision) I know his name is in the hat at South Doyle and Morristown East. If neither school hires him they are truly missing out on a great man and a great coach.

No Doubt our program will suffer a little losing him.

  5. Cumberland County - $4 adults $3 students. I know there was a comment about football being cheaper over the cost of a season. Keep in mind officials have to be paid. Football pays officials 5 times a year. Baseball will pay officials 10 - 13 times a year. A double header (jv/varsity) will cost a program $160 with a two man crew. A good baseball gate is when you make enough money to cover officials. I cant imagine that they could go any lower than $5 or $4 and still cover officials. Also keep in mind that booster clubs and kids pay for everything! The school system in most cases does not pay the first cent towards running the program.

  6. I would just like this question answered. Why do basketball coaches freak out if they have to play 3 games a week. Why do we have most weeks of a basketball season with only 2 games. Some weeks only have one! Why cant we play 3 games a week and shorten the 4 month season by a couple of weeks? Then most basketball/baseball players would get atleast 2 weeks of practice in. On top of that lets add two weeks to the baseball season on the back end. Still would have everything but state done by graduation and we would only be forced to play 4 games a week during the regular season instead of 5/6. Most weeks of the baseball season its hard to get a single practice in if there are any rainouts. But hold everything, it would be the end of the world if basketball had to play 3 games a week! What am I thinking!

  7. QUOTE(riverdaleman @ Apr 16 2007 - 11:51 AM) 826438595i dont think summer ball was effected by the 50/50 rule only fall baseball and open facilites til Jan 1st

50/50 rule only applies during the school year

  8. Do any high school teams still play together in the summer. It's my understanding that the TSSAA allows for 10 dates of school vs. school competition but does anybody utilize this or does everybody play on select travel teams only? We are looking for teams to play this summer at Cumberland County High School in Crossville. We will travel as well.

  9. QUOTE(BigDawg09 @ Mar 12 2007 - 10:29 PM) 826409724Irish pounded a woeful Stone Memorial team. Game was called after 5 innings. Probably a long ride back to middle TN. They seemed more like a JV team. At least the Irish pad their record early. AC and Loudon may want to send their JV teams.

    What was the score?

  10. It is still on a day to day basis. If no games are played today, it is likely that the tourney will be single elimination. If no games are played today or tommorrow, then it is quite possible that Greeneville and Cocke Co. will represent in the region.
