  1. Let's get ready to R U M B L E!!!!!! Region 8 - 4A No. 1 seed on the line. East is 3-0 in region and 8-1 overall, with their lone loss coming at the hands of D1, Class 6A, currently #4 in the state's AP poll, Cordova, at the beginning of the season. Ridgeway is 3-0 in region play as well and currently ranked #9 in the D1, Class 4A state AP poll. They have an overall record of 6-3. Their 3 losses are at the hands of D1, Class 6A, current #3 in the state's AP poll, Whitehaven, D2-AA, current #1 in the state's AP poll, MUS, and West Monroe High School (6-1-1) out of West Monroe, Louisiana. Both teams are loaded with talent. We can all agree that Ridgeway has played the harder out-of-region schedule. This game has huge ramifications, because the winner could possibly play every post season game at home, including the semi-final game, if they continue to win out during the post season. HUGE .... HUGE game. Who are you rolling with in this one and why?

  10. I think the turmoil that is going on with the HC at Trezevant has more influence on the team then a lot of people realize. I don't like how this is going at all. No one knows anything and nothing is being said. To my understanding he is not coaching. I don't want to verbalize what's going on in my head. I hope I am wrong.
  11. Week 10 prep football preview John Varlas , john.varlas@commercialappeal.com 9:25 p.m. CDT October 20, 2016 (Photo: Mark Weber/The Commercial Appeal) Ballots for the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football awards were sent to media members and coaches this week. And Shelby County should be well-represented when the semifinalists are announced next month. But nowhere more so than in Division 2-A. The small-school classification is home to some big talent this year and it would not be shocking to see three — or perhaps all four — semifinalists from Memphis. Leading the way is Lausanne's Eric Gray, the top performer on the state's fourth-ranked team. Heading into Friday, the sophomore has run for 1,370 yards on 134 carries (10.2 average) while scoring 27 touchdowns. Gray's been on a tear recently; he has 13 touchdowns in the last three games. Lausanne is the only team to defeat Harding this year and the Lions have two good candidates in seniors Marquavious Moore and Calvin Austin. Moore has 1,251 yards and 15 touchdowns through seven games while the explosive Austin (three punt return scores, one kickoff return) is a threat to go the distance on every play. Don't forget about last year's winner. Chase Hayden of St. George's is starting to come on strong after a bit of a slow start and heads into Friday with 914 yards and 16 scores. And if you want a good dark horse candidate, look no further than Rossville's Tavaris Moore. The senior leads the area in rushing at 231.8 yards per game (1,623 on a whopping 13.6 yards per carry) with 22 touchdowns. GAMES OF THE WEEK Collierville (2-6, 1-4 Region 4-6A) at (1) Whitehaven (8-0, 5-0), 7 p.m. (2) Cordova (8-0, 5-0 Region 4-6A) at Houston (4-4, 4-1), 7 p.m. Storylines: Talk around town is well underway about next week's regular season closer between Whitehaven and Cordova. But both teams have some work to do before then. Collierville's running game will be a challenge to the stout Whitehaven defense, and the Dragons historically have played the Tigers tough. Houston, meanwhile, is one of the season's most pleasant surprises and a victory over the Wolves guarantee a first-round home playoff game. Neither of the unbeatens should be overlooking their opposition Friday. OTHER DANDY DOZEN GAMES Craigmont (1-7) at (3) MUS (8-0), 7 p.m. Storylines: After a battle against Briarcrest last week, Dorian Hopkins, Bobby Wade and the rest of the Owls should find a smoother road against the Chiefs, who have played better in recent weeks after a very slow start. Manassas (0-8) at (4) Lausanne (8-0), 7 p.m. Storylines: Gray and quarterback Mario Nolan-Dillard likely won't be on the field very long as they try to burnish their resumes. Manassas has scored just 66 points all year, third-fewest among Shelby County teams. University School of Jackson (6-2) at (5) Briarcrest, 7 p.m. Storylines: A tough late-season, nonleague test for the Saints, who were in control at halftime last week at MUS before losing 21-17. Bruins' quarterback Jacob Buie has thrown for 2,485 yards and 25 touchdowns, primarily to Ryan Miller and Wells Smith. Catholic (1-7) at (6) CBHS (6-2), 7 p.m. Storylines: With MUS visiting on Oct. 28, the Brothers will get a chance to give their starters plenty of rest against the Chargers, who defeated winless BTW 14-12 last week for their only victory. Martin Luther King Prep (0-8) vs. (7) East (7-1) at the Fairgrounds, 7 p.m. Storylines: Another game that looks like a mismatch on paper. The Rams have been outscored 430-30 this season while East boasts Shelby County's seventh-ranked defense. Sheffield (0-7, 0-4 Region 8-3A) at (9) Raleigh-Egypt (8-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. Storylines: The Knights have been dangerous at times this season but it will take a monster effort to knock the Pharaohs from the unbeaten ranks. (11) Central (7-1, 5-0 Region 8-5A) vs. Overton (3-5, 0-5) at Halle, 7 p.m. Storylines: Warriors coach Lynord Crutchfield says he's still waiting for his team to put it together for a full four quarters. Overton's Brandon Willis is a dangerous back but if Central can keep the turnovers in check it should be fine. (12) Ridgeway (5-3) at Melrose (2-6), 7 p.m. Storylines: The Golden Wildcats put up their best numbers of the year last week — beating a good Bolivar Central team 53-38 — and this one could also be explosive. Ridgeway quarterback Tyrique Sandusky (222.5 yards per game, 22 touchdowns) is Shelby County's No. 3 passer while Melrose's Ahdai Paige (208.6, 22) is fourth. Line play will likely determine this one. FRIDAY'S OTHER GAMES 7 p.m. — Arlington at Bartlett, Lake Cormorant at Center Hill, Tupelo-Miss. at DeSoto Central, Oakhaven vs. Fairley at J.P. Freeman, North Delta at Fayette Aca., Northpoint at Fayette-Ware, Kingsbury at First Assembly, White Station at Germantown, Bolivar Central vs. Hamilton at Crump, West Memphis at Jacksonville-Ark., Wooddale at Kirby, Covington at Millington, Brighton at Munford, Lewisburg at New Hope-Miss., Columbus-Miss. at Olive Branch, Marion at Pine Bluff-Ark., Southaven at South Panola, Bolton at Southwind, ECS at St. Benedict, MAHS at St. George's, Rossville Christian at Tupelo Christian Prep, Middle College at Washington, Tipton-Rosemark Aca. at West Memphis Christian.
  12. Prep football players of the week for Week 9 John Varlas , john.varlas@commercialappeal.com10:04 p.m. CDT October 19, 2016 (Photo: Stan Carroll/The Commercial Appeal) OFFENSE Timothy Taylor, East senior: The University of Memphis commitment came through with his best statistical performance of the season as the Mustangs rallied from a halftime-deficit to defeat Millington in Region 8-4A, 40-20. Taylor ran for 260 yards and four touchdowns as the Mustangs improved to 7-1, with the only loss coming to state-ranked Cordova in the opening week. T.J. Smith, Covington senior: Smith has been doing big things at Covington for a while but he outdid himself in last week's 66-42 victory over Fayette-Ware in Region 8-3A. He ran for 194 yards and five touchdowns (8,5,2,2,2) while also scoring on an 85-yard kickoff return. For good measure, he added a seventh touchdown on defense, stripping a Wildcat ball-carrier and going 71 yards the other way. DEFENSE Dorian Hopkins, MUS sophomore: Hopkins came through in a big way as the Owls wrapped up the Division 2-AA West championship and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a 21-17 victory over Briarcrest. The middle linebacker had 22 tackles, including two sacks for minus-14 yards, while breaking up a pass as MUS rallied from a 17-0 halftime deficit.

  15. I understand your sentiment. Just know this. That very same game, the White Hat tried to eject the principal of the school. That's right, he tried to eject Dr. Hunter. Dr. Hunter followed the lead of his HC and left the sidelines voluntarily .. but he was HOT! He later penned a letter to the office of the TSSAA and let them know about the shenanigans that was going on. That being stated ... Whitehaven doesn't feel like we are being oppressed nor do we feel like we are being persecuted continually. When you are a student or alum from the Haven, you learn to be the cream at a very early stage in life. (The cream always rises to the top) You can't afford to look at life as if persecution is a burden. That's how you become defeated. You learn that through hard work, dedication, and commitment, to persevere, in spite of. Winners win (life, football, whatever) ... that's what they do. It is a learned behavior. It is something that you teach and pass down to the next generation. There will always be obstacles. You just overcome them.

  17. He's not flying solo in Memphis. Remember the White Hat that umped the Whitehaven/Ridgeway game 3 years ago? He was 'special'.
  18. Wait a minute ... width of eye black? Really? You have got to be kidding me. We probably need to all get together and discuss these 'interesting' calls because I thought ejecting a HC over shirttails was extremely anal and over the top. Now I'm reading about the width of eye black. It just brings to memory all of these bad White Hats I've seen in recent history ... like the White Hat that umpired the Whitehaven/Ridgeway game at Halle 3 years ago. That was just down right pathetic.
  19. That's all it takes. It has happened before in Memphis. When the new principal got the job at Memphis East, they immediately got rid of Wayne Randall and hired the current HC. Wayne Randall had built the program to the point that they were a perennial post season team. He coached the East Mustangs to 2 championship games, and won one of them prior to him losing his HC position. The explanation given was ..."We want to go into a new direction." There are other examples, but that is the one that I am familiar with. If he is let go ... there is precedent. The principal doesn't have to give a reason. If a principal so chooses to hire another coach, they can.
  20. Yeah. I was afraid you were going to say something like that. I don't like the sound of that at all.
  21. Smart move. Question. What's Telli's status? Is he coaching or what?
  22. Trezevant vs Douglass stats. The way I read these stats, they called off the dogs and let the 2's get a lot of PT in the 4th. Don't let the score fool you.
