Shelby County Schools teams will not be allowed to have contact in practice until at least after Labor Day, according to a tweet from Superintendent Joris Ray. That means that SCS teams would begin the season on Sept. 18 in Week 5, at the earliest. "We share the commitment of Governor Bill Lee and Commissioner Penny Schwinn to prioritize safety in our communities," Ray wrote. "As announced last week, Shelby County Schools will start the school year fully virtual on August 31 and will continue athletic conditioning without changes. The alarming daily increases in COVID-19 cases in Memphis and Shelby County create a narrative that is different from many areas across the state. SCS will continue to monitor public health conditions and reconvene discussions after Labor Day." The guidelines, which will remain in place until SCS changes them, call for conditioning only in practices with social distancing. Teams are also not allowed to use their weight rooms. TSSAA rules stipulate that football players must have 10 days of practice in pads before they can play a game. The decision, which comes a day after Whitehaven announced it would not play a game until Sept. 18, means that the two largest school systems in the state, Shelby County Schools and Metro Nashville Public Schools, will not be playing football games until September, despite Gov. Lee's executive order No. 55 allowing the prep football season to begin on Aug. 21.

Whitehaven won't play football until Sept. 18. Will others follow? Khari Thompson Memphis Commercial Appeal Whitehaven, which made last year's Class 6A quarterfinals and won state titles in 2012 and 2016, will not play football games until Sept. 18, coach Rodney Saulsberry told The Commercial Appeal on Monday. That means one of the state's most dominant programs will not play games until Week 5 of the regular season. "Our bodies are not physically prepared to play football. Football is a collision sport," Saulsberry said. "And if you haven’t been lifting weights and been in the building to use weight equipment and all those different things, it doesn’t make sense to put your body in harm's way that way. It’s just not sensible." The start of the high school football season is less than three weeks away, and Shelby County Schools' teams are not permitted to have contact in practices yet. SCS has not informed coaches of when they can practice with contact or whether the season will be pushed back. There's a chance other schools might follow Whitehaven's lead and start their seasons later than the original Aug. 21 start date. MAHS coach Cedric Miller also said that he's "probably" going to wait until September to play games, but he will wait until he hears from SCS to make a final decision. He said he was concerned about having his team play against teams from other school districts that were allowed to start earlier. "I'm worried about the safety and the physicality," Miller said. "You don't want to put anybody's kids out there in harm's way if you don't have to. If TSSAA would have stuck with the eight games and starting the season in September, I would have been fine." Metro Nashville Public Schools asked its schools last week not to have games until after Labor Day. Some SCS coaches, such as Melrose's Cedrick Wilson, want to play on Aug. 21. TSSAA's football practice regulations say that an athlete cannot be considered "conditioned" in a period of only two to three weeks, so unless SCS allows contact practices this week, teams might not be able to play on Aug 21. "Right now we're just waiting on the (Shelby County Interscholastic Athletic Association), and I would really like to hear something because we're all taking the chance of getting this virus," Wilson said. "And if we're going to play, I hope that they can go ahead on and make a decision. I know it's a tough one, but we need to somehow come up with a decision."

Walter Nolen, the No. 1 defensive tackle and No. 3 overall college football prospect in the country for the Class of 2022, has transferred to St. Benedict, coach Marlon Walls confirmed. "It's pretty cool just because you want to get that recognition out that St. Benedict is a great place to go be a student but also be an athlete as well," Walls said. "So I know that with this big cat right here the news will be out that you can come here and play some ball, and not just play some ball but be one of the best because that's what he is." Nolen, a five-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite, has offers from Tennessee, Florida State, Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss among others. He played at Olive Branch last year and helped lead the Conquistadors to the second round of the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs. He was a first-team Commercial Appeal All-Metro selection with 92 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, two sacks, 21 hurries, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound junior transferred to IMG Academy in Florida in February but returned to the Memphis area before he got to play a game there. He joins a St. Benedict team that was 3-7 last season and 0-5 in region play. Walls, who played linebacker at Tennessee, said he's looking forward to teaching Nolen what he learned in the SEC. "I want to give him the small details that your college coaches are going to be requiring of you," Walls said. "I know that kid can do that stuff and walk across the stage one day and be drafted. I mean like a first-round draft pick. That kid is that good as far as how explosive he is, his first-step is unmatched, he's got flexible hips, he's light on his feet. He's a huge, huge human being at 6-foot-5 with long arms and small calf muscles so he can move. If you're looking for a defensive lineman as far as drawing one up, he's one."
