It took about 15 seconds before Todd Hargis broke into tears after winning the 138-pound crown at the Region II wrestling meet Saturday at Hardin Valley Academy.
The Grace Christian junior was mobbed and congratulated by his teammates before he took off in a sprint, looking for his mother.
When he finally found her, they embraced and celebrated a victory Hargis said was the result of unadulterated hard work.
Hargis defeated Halls' Joe Fox, 7-5, and in doing so guaranteed himself a No. 1 seed at the state meet in Franklin, which starts Thursday. A poor showing at last year's state meet left him hungry.
"I wrestled the first seed and I got killed by him," Hargis said. "But I have put in so much hard work in this sport and it paid off this year. I have worked my butt off and it showed on the mat."
Big Turnaround: What a difference a year made for Halls' Evan Huling.
After failing to qualify at regionals in 2012, the sophomore quickly made a name for himself by notching a victory over Gibbs' Joey Smith, 15-2, to take the top spot in the 113-pound division.
Huling defeated Smith earlier in the season and said he knew exactly what moves to use in their match.
"I was expecting it to be me and him in the finals and that it would be a tough match," Huling said. "But I kind of knew what to do and I was expecting what he was going to do."
Overcoming Adversity: Action was stopped on four occasions during the 160-pound championship match between Gibbs' Andres Leyva and CAK's Ryan Long so trainers could plug Leyva's bleeding nose.
That didn't slow Leyva, who fell a point shy of placing at last year's state meet, and he recorded a 3-1 decision over Long.
Leyva, ranked No. 4 in the state, said he is ready to avenge last year's disappointing ending and was motivated by being named the third seed in the regional tournament.
"They seeded me low because of some earlier losses," the three-time region champion said. "But I made myself ready for anything — no matter who it was even if I had already beat them I was going to give it my all."
Notable: Fulton's SteveanWilson remained unbeaten and captured the 182-pound region crown by pinning Gibbs' Trey Lawson with 15 seconds remaining in the first period. Wilson was named the meet's most outstanding wrestler in the 152-285 divisions.
Farragut's Charles Leavell (29-0) also stayed flawless this season, as the four-time state qualifier won the 285-pound division over Catholic's Luis Soto.
Pigeon Forge's Nate Croley, the 145-pound champion, was named the most outstanding wrestler between 106-145 pounds and the 106-pound championship match between Pigeon Forge's Matthew Kieta and Halls' Tanner Justice was named best match. Kieta won, 9-5.
