  1. Last time I looked a college could give a scholarship for band, singing, or chorus. Athelete's get scholarships for playing sports. But there grades don't come from getting credit for a PE class that they don't even take.

Is a PE grade even figured into a kid's grades for college? I have heard that you have to go thru some search process to be qualified for a scholarship.

Band, chorus, and singing are not considered core classes either! Some scholarships (and colleges) look at only core classes (english, math, history, science) and some include all classes when looking a students GPA. Once again PE is an acedemic class that is required to graduate, just like a fine art (generally music or art). If you can take more than one fine art (remember only one is required) then why can't you take more than one PE. If your fine art can be specific (band) then your PE should be specific (football, basketball, etc.). I think it is unfair that we label athletes as bad students, last time I checked you have to be acedemically eligible for H.S. athletics but not for the band.

  2. I echo your thoughts 100%. I was an athlete and a band member in both high school and college, and if all athletic teams worked/practiced as hard as the bands did, they really would be better. I'm not saying that all bands work harder than all sports teams, I'm just saying that it does happen in some cases. I'm not going to sit here and say that sports doesn't have a valuable place in a young person's life. Team sports offer a lot of valuable benefits for individuals - work-ethic, team work skills, individual and team dedication, etc. Music and sports really aren't that different in some ways. However, as an intellectual, music offers something that sports never will - reading a defense won't earn you a college degree, but reading sheet music can earn you a degree. I personally think that offering an athletic period is a convenient excuse for students who don't want to take a fine art or other elective (so instead they get PE credit), which is exactly what many students do when they enroll in PE rather than something academic. Again, as a former athlete, I fully support and back sports programs, but I think that academics and broadening a students horizons are more important in the long run.

Actually, I think you can get a degree in P.E. Why don't you check out the grades of those intellectual band members, I bet in a lot of cases your athletic teams have better collective GPA's than your band.

I totally agree Stonewall. The Postseason is what its all about and Science Hill hasnt been to state since 02 and since then DBs been twice Greeneville twice and Tenn High once. I saw that article on tricitiessports as well and i too was kind of bothered by them talking about how the streak continued. If you are the number 2 seed, the streak did not continue!! Period.

What's the streak? I am sure it has to do with regular season district titles, but how many is it in a row? How many tournament titles have they won over that same span? Just an outsider wondering a little bit, thanks.

  4. Yes, this really happened, and things like this will continue to happen from a bad coach with a winning record. (As the topic goes). My word from the county is that a couple of Seniors did not leave the bench.

You stated several times that this was not directed at anyone. Now the truth comes out. Sounds like sour grapes. by the way, you get great credibility when you get your info from "your word from the county". Its not about wins and losses, its about whether or not my child plays enough, scores enough, is not yelled at, is captain, and we win. And you do not have to be a coach to have this opinion!

  5. So you are telling me it makes sense to let a team hold the ball and run the clock down. last time I checked when you are losing your worst enemy is the clock. I have seen plenty of times when a team with inferior talents really gets after a better team and ends up winning. If you get beat then you get beat it's life. everything is not always equal. Im not saying goodpasture should have come out and played man the whole game but at some point you have to say forget lit et's go attack them and if they beat us then hats off to them.

Now somebody made the comment earlier about single a teams not competing with AA teams. CSAS who has traditionally been single moved up to double in 98 and went to the sub state, the school was always one of the smallest AA schools in the state(should have been single A) and was always competitive. for the most part AA and AA schools will have more talent but there are instances where a single A team coul dcompete with a AA or a AA team competing with AAA

Yes, it makes sense to let a team hold the ball in this situation. Goodpasture had no chance if they get out and pressure Mitchell for 4 quarters, but they do have a chance if they only have to do it for 8 min or less. Don't you think Goodpasture would have jumped at the chance to be 7 down heading into the 4th quarter before the game. Well they got that chance. With Mitchell's athletes they had to be the aggressor and not play the game at Goodpasture's pace. Just my opinion.

  6. How can people even make the argument that it was good coaching for Mitchell to hold the ball and stupid for Goodpasture to let them. Mitchell was obviously the most talented team in the State and they hold the ball with a single digit lead against a team that couldn't hold a candle to them in the talent department. That is aweful and Goodpatures coach would have to have been nuts to come out and pressure. Are you kidding me? A chance to go into the 4th with a chance, I don't think Goodpasture could have asked for much more than that. Mitchell's "coaching" was the only thing keeping them from the winning the Gold Ball. By the way, can anyone tell me how many times Thad Young posted up during the tournament ( I bet he scored 80% of the time he posted up). That could of helped against the undersized Liberty.

  7. I would just like to congratulate Catholic and wish them good luck. That was a great game in the substate with PF and we will be rooting for you. I think we have similar kids and both teams play with effort and heart, that is exciting to watch regardless of the pace of play. Keep pounding it and proving people wrong.

  8. The patsies of Carter High are available for a Home and Home, however RHS don't want to play.

Swap the schedules have a swap of the records...FLAT OUT.

You know, it is funny to hear a Carter person whine about district strength. Didn't you guys spend all of football season trying to defend your 9-1 record against the Region 2 people who were saying you played in the weak Region 1. Seems odd that you do the same thing now that the tables are turned.

  9. I just looked at some pictures of Cosby in action and they look kind of slow to me. Looks like ACC(West) against the Ivy league(East). I believe some full court pressure defense will have looking them for oxygen.

How can a picture make Cosby look slow? Is it the fact that they have mostly white players that makes you think they are slow? I am not a Cosby fan ( although I will be rooting for them at the Boro), but Cosby is actually a very athletic team. Blakely is a tremendous athlete in the post and their guards are all very quick. They may not be the most athletic team in the state, but I think that is a pretty hard conclusion to come to from a picture. Seems like the NBA MVP was unathletic too looking at pictures of him on the internet. Cosby has some holes, but they are a very good basketball team. They may not win it all, but they are very capable. If they catch fire watch out. Good luck in the Boro, from a PF fan.

  10. TSSAA assigns all officials for the region tournament and it was stated correctly that the officials were from Athens. By the way, this is the same association that called the tournament at Unicoi last year and I don't remember hearing any cry about it when you punched your ticket to substate. Please don't bring the S.Greene and PF game into this, you should not try to take away from what both of those teams did last night. It was a hard fought game by two highly competive teams that both refused to lose.

  11. Pigeon Forge is Region Champions. PF beats SG 67-54 in OT. An absolutely awesome game. SG played their hearts out and led most of the game. Woodrick was on the bench with fouls almost all night and fouled out with about 2 min to go in regulation. PF battled back in the fourth from at least 6 down, maybe more, to take a two point lead late in the game. SG tied it with 8 sec to go to send it into OT. PF dominated OT 15-2. Congrats to SG, Donahue is a stud, you guys played your butts off. Hoese is a class act and we wish you well Monday in Substate.

Richard Brown and Michael Schleif of PF were Co-MVP's of the Region Tournament.

  12. PF beats Elizabethton 68-60. PF was down 6 heading into fourth and used a 12-0 run and a 27-13 fourth quarter to get the win. PF will have to play much better to beat either Unicoi or Rutledge.

Claiborne lost to Happy Valley by 11. The score was tied at half, but the press and lack of guard play eventually did Claiborne in. They battled hard and fought valiantly without the district 2-AA MVP Andrew Nickell. Happy Valley is deep and very good, they will be tough to beat if they are clicking.

  13. Just heard that Rutledge thumped Claiborne 70-51 to finish third...also heard Nickell broke his hand after the CG game Tuesday and didn't play.

Looks like if all holds true to the bracket in District 1-AA, Kip will have one more chance to finally beat Coach Bayless at Happy Valley...isn't he ready to retire yet or has he already? :thumb:

Was Happy Valley the team that beat out the Singleton led Pioneers two years ago? I remember Happy Valley being good, but can't remember who they played. Seems like I felt like Rutledge should have won though, dont know, getting too old to remember these things.

  14. Rutledge and PF played another hard fought battle last night. The game was back and forth all night, with PF finally pulling ahead early in the fourth. PF was able to hold off Rutledge and get the win to advance to the finals. Coach Combs has done a wonderful job preparing this team for the playoffs. The McBee has come a long way this year and will the the player to watch over the next couple of years. I think Rutledge has a good shot of upsetting Claiborne in the consolation.

CG beat Claiborne in OT. CG seemed to control the game from the start, but when you looked up at the scoreboard late Claiborne was hanging in. All of a sudden a missed freethrow and a turnover and Claiborne has it tied. In the OT Estes hits a shot to tie with about 5 sec left (Claiborne had held the ball for last shot down 2) CG inbounds gets it up the floor and hits a WIDE OPEN three.

  15. KevB,

Rutledge is by far the hottest team in 2-AA right now. They are playing extremely well and looked very good against Union last night. Reischling and McBee have taken their games to another level down the stretch and the athleticism of Hudson is unmatched in the district, with the exception of Nickell.

The game tonight vs. PF should be a war. Both regular season games were close, with PF winning by less than 10 both times. Should be a great game.

Claiborne vs Cumberland Gap is the game that everyone expected to be for the title. Cumberland Gap swept the regular season series in two close games, but Claiborne is still loaded with talent. You have to love rivalry games in the post season, like the games didn't already mean enough. Cumberland Gap struggled down the stretch, we will have to wait and see if they have recovered enough to get to the championship.
