  1. Umpire, you are exactly right TSSAA needs to look at the game and at the officiating first but I have been to several games that were called worse than that and this kind of thing did not happen. This would not have happened had the shelbyville coaches showed more class and sportmanship and shook our teams hands but they were too worried about screaming at the ref's. It probably would not have happened had their locker room not been right beside our student section because tensions were high and our kids were very excited and their players were very upset. I think TSSAA needs to look at how the coaches handled the game and the loss and they need to look at how the players took the loss by jumping into our student section and starting to punch our kids.

I can admit that from the Shelbyville standpoint that some things could have been handled differently.

Can ANYONE from Lawrence County admit that their students were ON THE COURT !!! ???

Can anyone from Lawrence County admit that their student STORMED THE COURT !!! ???

Can anyone from Lawrence County admit that they had NO ADMINISTRATION THERE TO CONTROL THEIR STUDENTS !!! ???

    Can you???

I was there, on the Shelbyville side since that is where I live. Everything you say about LCHS is true. It is also true that the SCHS coach got a technical after the game was over, shoved a cheerleader, and Andrews sucker-punched a kid from LCHS. If the SCHS coach had not shoved the girl the LCHS SRO might have been able to stop some of what happened. Or, better yet, if he had joined the line to shake hands along with his players it would have all been avoided.

Also, every school in 8AAA wishes they had LCHS's student section (or, in some cases, ANY student section) but, guys and gals, stay off the court.

  2. None just a big kid 50-28 after 3

Where are you sitting? I am on the north side on my laptop. I assume since you criticize this kid then you are in the gym watching?

Manassas is good. Chatt played right into Manassas hands with the full court man to man. Great game Manassas. If someone gets on here today and is critical of Buckner's game they really don't need to post again

No one has been critical of his game in any posts I have read the last few days, and I have read them all.

  3. Moving softball to the fall would be an intelligent idea. As others have noted, those of us involved in softball, especially travel, have long supported a move. In addition to Georgia, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma also now play high school softball in the fall. I am not one who normally defends TSSAA, but is it possible that even though all of us in the softball world talk about this every year, TSSAA has not considered a change because they have never been presented with a proposal to change? That might not be the case. For all I know, it has been presented formally several times and rejected, but I don't ever recall seeing it on a Board of Control agenda.

My guess is that given what many of us interpret as obvious animosity toward travel ball during the Carter era, anything which would seem to help travel softball would be rejected without hesitation. But, if it hasn't been presented to them, I really doubt that they have even thought about it.

Even though there are a lot of people who enjoy high school softball, there is a growing number of players and parents who are very open to alternatives in the spring. For several years now, I've considered putting together a team of high school aged players and traveling to Dalton, Atlanta, Marietta, etc. a couple of times a month for travel tournaments. Obviously, that would remove those players from high school softball as they would not be eligible. Every time it comes up, my email and voice mail fills up with people who want their daughter to be considered if I were to do that. My gut feeling is that once the first "spring" team is put together, several others will quickly follow suit. I didn't really bring it up this year, but I still got a ton of emails and phone calls during January from people asking if I was going to do it. Interestingly enough, once the first practices began this year, I started getting calls again... and since the first scrimmages and play days have started, I'm getting even more calls. There is a lot of frustration with high school ball out there. The advantages to those players, playing that level of competition would be significant, and it might be a catalyst for TSSAA to seriously consider a move to the fall. Who knows.

As far as college coaches coming to high school games if the season was moved to the fall, I don't know how valid that argument is. While it would be easier for them to come to a fall game instead of one in the spring because of their collegiate schedule, there are two main reasons why college coaches don't show up at high school games and conflicts with their practice/game schedule isn't one of the two.

The NCAA places a limit on the number of evaluation days each staff is allowed every year. If a coach shows up at a high school game, they get to see 20ish players from two teams play one game (and they are probably only interested in one player) and it counts as one evaluation day. If they show up at an exposure and watch games at 8, 10, 12, 2, 4, 6, and 8, it counts as one evaluation day. 280 players from 14 teams (many of which are legitimate recruits) - and they can easily double that number by watching 2 games on adjacent fields or changing fields at the mid point of each time block. Far more bang for the buck so to speak. Additionally, the level of competition at the high school level makes it difficult for a coach to accurately evaluate players. There are certain marquee games where top high school teams with a lot of travel ball players face off against each other, but generally speaking that doesn't occur very often, and even then, it doesn't come close to comparing to what they see at a Gold qualifier or a decent exposure.

There are a lot of states where many of the top players no longer play high school ball, and there are a growing number of signees and verbal commitments from players who bypassed high school ball. There is a trend in that direction, and I expect it to continue. A valid alternative to spring high school ball might be the catalyst TSSAA needs to wake up and make a logical change.

Anyway, I doubt that some TSSAA executive is just going to wake up one morning and think "Hey, wouldn't it be smart to move softball to the fall. Let's see if we can do it." And if they are reading boards like this one, I'd guess they are looking for people bashing (or supporting) TSSAA and are not out here seeking intelligent ideas on how to improve high school softball in Tennessee, unfortunately.

Why not just play travel ball through October? Weather is good and college coaches could come see all of those players at one place during their off-season

  4. dear lawrence co.

we here at shelbyville central would like to congradulate u on ur loss. we let yall win so u could play the number 4 seed but u still somehow seemed to find a way to screw it up. i guess shelbyville really does own this district. facts dont lie. who's playing tonight?

    love eagle man 55

Nice strategy. At least Lawrence County has the 8AAA title for their efforts.

  5. First off neither one of them live with her. Second I hate to inform you but it is not illegal for a player to go over to a coaches house, as in to watch some extra film or strategize or even to work on recruiting for the college ranks. All of these are legal, and it's ridiculous that someone's parents would be this angry that their daughter wasn't playing and to go off and do what they've done.

So. what pictures would have been taken? If. and I emphasize "if", they were pictures of a player leaving with the coach at 7:30AM with a book bag then that is explainable?

  6. It looks like the Rebels have made some improvements, I sure didn't expect the game to be this close. I didn't see the game but read about it and spoke to a couple of TECH friends who were there. The Cavs could not get much going against the Rebel's defense. It looks like Cookeville will be the region winner unless Lincoln County beats them with Franklin County in third and Warren County in 4th place.

You weren't at the game? Did you coach by cell phone?

  7. The real reason? The real reason? You want he real reason? You can't handle he real reason because it won't old up to your "Racist" theory. How about he is a poor role model, unprepared, can't coach and makes very poor decisions.

How do this strike you? And this is just one more example. And by the way in case you have been sleeping for the past 30 years or so. Things are much different now days than they were in 1975.

    Ole Dad

Racist? This is racist? Didn't know that. Glad you let me in on that. Now I understand.

  8. I think everyone is directing this @ the wrong people. If y'all don't like this, make complaints to the TSSAA to change the rules. Right now it's allowed & some schools are doing it. By the way, my daughter's school doesn't do this, but then her school system doesn't do much at all.

The schools make the rules for the TSSAA. The schools do not want to be investigated and do not want the TSSAA to have investigators. In the past, if someone walked into a gym and there were basketballs out and it was off-season, there was an obvious violation. Now you just say it is open gym and everything is fine. Schools all over the state, but not all schools, are cheating and they know it and their admin knows it. How could they not? The first day of basketball does not even raise the adrenalin any more because it is just like yesterday, and the day before, etc.

None of what I am posting is aimed at Gibson County any more so than any other school in the state. I have never been in Gibson County.

  9. This is all I see

Practice During the School Day ??“ All athletic practice during the regular hours of any school day shall conform to the same rules, regulations, and season as corresponding athletic practice outside the school day.

Which I would take that is they could so weightlifting and conditioning or open gym situation.

If you have open gym at 8AM, who else would be able to attend except the basketball players?

  10. I think the biggest sports drain has been volleyball, not softball. Have any of you looked at how many volleyball teams there are now and how big Club Ball has become? I was staggered at how many girls tried out for club ball in Chattoonaga. I know I spelled that wrong. Girls have to make a choice between the two-Club Ball is on at the same time as school BB and the beginning of AAU season. The average VB team is now taller than the AV BB team in high school. I think that is where the sports drain is coming from. I have talked to many parent's of X basketball players who are now devoted VB players and they say that the girls feel more feminine with VB. They have sexier uniforms, etc, and they don't get beat up every time they step on the floor. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

We are in a cycle, like everything else. It will come back around again.

I agree. I was just using softball as an example. Basketball coaches are their own worst enemies by making BB year-around. Football is doing the same to boy's sports. Very few players sign scholarships in relation to the number that are "forced" to concentrate on one sport.

Please don't get me started on those volleyball shorts. Sexy is not exactly the word I would use. Decadent, maybe?

  11. It is pretty simple, really. Look and see how money was made in the 1990s off of AAU and you will see that it is from national sponsors, if at all. Now look and see how much money is made nowadays by exposure tournaments along with sponsors and you have your answer. In addition, look who the major supporters of AAU were then and see where they are now. They have different agendas today than in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The level of basketball across the state is way down. The teams at the high school state in the last few years have declined tremendously. Very few if any teams at the state in 2008 could make the state 10, even 5, years ago. the main reason, in my opinion, is that parents and coaches are making kids concentrate on one sport and many do not end up in the sport for which they have the most talent. Basketball is losing athletes to softball and softball is losing athletes to basketball.
