From I heard with it being the last game Greeneville let their 2 string guys play a lot which I wouldn’t blame them. Can’t have injuries going into playoffs

plus a 40+ point win is a big big win and shouldn’t have starters playing at that point

Fake News!  I was at the game.  Greeneville led 28-0 at half.  Grainger had a time consuming drive that ate up almost 9 minutes of the 2nd quarter but did not result in points.  Greeneville went up by 35-0 about 4 minutes into the 3rd quarter.  Grainger chewed up more time with a couple of drives but again no points.  Greeneville scored their last points on a pass from Ballard to Goddard with 8 minutes left in the game to make it 42-0.  They did play their 2nd string from that point on but it certainly wasn't a lot.  Grainger was unable to slow Greeneville's offense but was able to control the ball some and keep them off the field.

  2. This thread has gotten so off base it is ridiculous. First, it's obvious that both Grainger and Elizabethton have passionate fans. Secondly, it's apparent there are trolls that are all to willing to take shots at both, e. g. this 'tired' recruiting and 'refs are EHS homers' BS. Consequently, I suggest the Lady Grizzly and Lady Cyclone fans focus more energy on supporting their respective teams in their quests to get to Murfreesboro. Likewise, I suggest the trolls/detractors crawl back under the rocks they slithered out from under. Go Cyclones!

Agree! No more posts from anyone! Lets end it here.
  3. Sometimes, maybe if it was an Elizabethton Paper. But that paper was from Johnson City and you know how they would lie to help Elizabethton. They knew this game was going to be played and you would lose so they made that stuff up just for you. Ha Ha Ha you guys are funny. Playing like I saw, my prediction you won't get past CAK.

Not saying the paper lied. They just reported the information that was given to them. You sre the funny one if you buy the story. Again, Cool Story!
  4. NOT middle of season, they only played 4 games.

ELIZABETHTON — Four coaching changes occurred Thursday morning at Elizabethton High School.

Just four games into the season, Tony Gordon resigned as head boys’ basketball coach. The school then chose to remove Len Dugger from the girls’ program and fill the vacancy created by Gordon’s departure.

That left an opening for the girls team, and Cyclones’ athletic director Mike Wilson stepped into that position on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.

Gordon left the program after just one full season. Last year the Cyclones went 12-14 and lost in the first round of the District 1-AA tournament.

After a strong summer, expectations were high for the Cyclones this season. But Gordon departed after a 1-3 start that included losses to Science Hill, Knox Bearden and Unicoi County.

Gordon, whose team lost its Three Rivers Conference season opener to the Blue Devils on Tuesday night, did not return phone messages.

Elizabethton Director of Schools Ed Alexander said the early season changes are not an ideal thing.

“The timing is beyond troubling, for the sake of the kids, the parents and the program,†said Alexander. “We’re trying to heal up, fix up and focus on stability for both programs. Both coaches have over 20 years of experience.â€

Wilson would not comment on Gordon’s reason for resigning, but said Gordon will remain as a teacher in the system.

“I appreciate his effort and hard work that he put in,†said Wilson. “I’m sorry things didn’t work out better for him.â€

Gordon previously coached at Morristown West, and before that led University High to a Class A state semifinal appearance in 2003.

Both Dugger and Wilson assumed their new roles at Thursday’s practices.

Dugger’s move to the boys’ program is something that has been rumored for a couple of years. He was offered the boys’ job prior to last season, but opted to stick with the girls and led them to the Class AA state tournament.

Wilson is a longtime girls coach, who guided the Lady Cyclones to multiple sectional appearances and a berth in the 2005 state tournament, where they lost to eventual champion Chester County. Wilson took over the boys’ program the following season and coached for a couple of years before becoming the school’s athletic director.

“Things will be a little awkward at first, probably more so for Coach Dugger,†said Wilson. “He is probably less familiar with the things Coach Gordon has done, his schemes and so forth. But I’ve been around Coach Dugger for 27 years, and I’m much more familiar with what he does.â€

Wilson said he expects to make a fairly smooth transition back into coaching, but realizes it will take some time.

“We understand the situation we’re in, and we don’t think things will change overnight,†said Wilson. “You’re always going to be a little apprehensive. Being in the middle of the year it’s a little awkward.â€

Wilson said he expects a mixed reaction from the public about the overall situation.

“With Coach Gordon’s resignation, we feel Coach Dugger is the guy who needs to coach our boys,†said Wilson. “We feel like Coach Dugger will do the job better than anyone else in Elizabethton. It’s his familiarity, the ties in the community, and the respect people have for him as a coach. Obviously he’s the right person.â€

Obviously everyone is saying the right things. Just PR and propaganda!

  5. It would pay you to get your facts straight before you speak. Coach Dugger did NOT willingly go to the boys team (not at mid-season, but after only a few games). He was removed as girls coach by the superintendant because he felt the boys needed stability and the girls would be fine with the AD, who was a former coach. This was done against Dugger's will and he was told at the time that at the end of the season he would be allowed to return to the girls if he desired, which he did. This is fact and documented in the Elizabethton Star if you wish to read the archives online. If you want to bash anyone over this move, then that would be Superindentant of Schools, Ed Alexander, not Dugger. We were surprised because he actually gave Dugger the choice after the season, but he did and the girls got Dugger back and the boys got a very good choice in their new head coach.

Hahahaha! Cool story Bro! Got some land I'll sell you. Why not just put the AD with the Boys team. The stability would have been just the same if your giving Dugger the option to return to the girls. Good one though!!
  6. No one made up anything, you guys said your coach should not shake hands. Maybe our coach saw your little Roly-polies needed a rest from trying to run up and down the court with the Cyclones. I guess they were not use to playing at that pase. With that mouth I guess the apple did not fall far from the tree, I bet you wrote the cheers for your student section last night.

So calling our players names is now acceptable? Thats over the line.
  7. As you can see I have just registered to this site and have never posted though I have for several years enjoyed reading the posts. I have been a parent of ball players for many years and have been blessed with the opporutnity to experience doing so on several different levels and in different conferences. There is one thing I can tell you for certain - no matter where you go sports fans are always the same: they love their team and seldom see wrong in what they do (they never foul, are always the one done wrong, etc.). The mixture in the fanbase almost always includes those who are die hard supporters that are in reality somewhat embarassing to the very ones they are supporting. There are also those who actually have the ability to see good in the other team and can admit when a call made by a referee was wrong although you usually will hear the "but we'll take it" comment added in relief. There is absolutely nothing wrong with supporting our teams. There is even nothing wrong with disliking other team's fans and/or coaches and there are many times these feelings are warranted to an extent. It would be nice if everyone could see that they too are only supporting their team with the same spirit as the other. Regarding coaches I will say this about the time-out called by Coach Dugger at the end of the game mentioned above: when the timeout was called an Elizabethton player was trapped and in trouble and was possibly about to lose the ball. The refs could also have called a foul on Grainger - yes it was right in front of me and it would not have been out of reach. Was it a smart timeout - Cyclone fans (including me) would say yes - Grainger fans would say no. Again it depends on which team you were rooting for.

What I find disheartening is when adults allow their feelings towards other adults to spill over into how they treat and react to other ball teams. The kids on the other team are just that, kids who have worked extremely hard, spent hours in the gym, worried about their shot, tried to remember all of their plays, adjusted to injuries and stepped into a position on the court where they have never before played. They have worked just as hard as the other team (sometimes harder) but for the most part they've all put everything they have into the game. From the time we first became parents to a player we've tried to tell them to put 100% into whatever they were doing - if you're gonna do it do it to the best of your ability. But we've also told them to never take any team or individual player and their abilities for granted and to always, always appreciate other players' abilities no matter who they are. But the most important thing we have tried to instill in our kids is to respect other teams and individual players. Last night when Grainger's team was given their trophy, Elizabethton fans not only applauded the team but also stood and showed them the respect they deserved. They are a really good ball team and their achievements are awesome! However, when Elizabethton was given their trophy Grainger parents not only did not applaud, they yelled things to our team the entire time they were taking pictures (mainly about the referees and that they should be in our team picture - again it depends on which side of the final score you are on - we could argue they didn't make calls our way as well - they are from Region 3 which is closer to you than us - we've never been happy with their game calline either). Likewise, when individual tournament awards were given, Grainger parents clapped for all recipients except for Elizabethton players. Parents - not the kids chose to not respect a team of kids who worked extremely hard and overcame losing 3 starters just to be able to play that game. I have to say in all the years I have attended ball games I believe that was the saddest example of sportsmanship I have seen.

Elizabethton may not have a facility that is up to the standards of Grainger's (and yes, the statement about our facilities was made by a Grainger fan) but it is what we have and we appreciate our seat backs. We did not request to host the tournament - it was just our turn and in fact I do not even remember when we last held one. My experience since I have had kids playing is that we have always traveled other than game 1 of a regional tournament or the sub-state game. Would Grainger fans feel any differently about the game had we played on a neutral court or even at their facility? Regardless, I can only hope that our players learn something valuable from how the Grainger parents treated them after the game and that is not to do what they did, but to have respect for the other team, appreciate their abilities and the effort they put forth during the game and to always show that respect and appreciation.

Best of luck to the Grainger team on your sub-state game with CAK.

Go Cyclones! We are very proud of you!

The Tournament was originally scheduled to be played at Happy Valley. Somehow it ended up at Elizabethton. Not sure how that happened. Im sure I will be enlightened on it though. Th e Regional should be played at a Neutral Site. Elizabethton has not had to board a bus one time since the District Tournament started. That is not their fault. Anyone would take that deal if they could get it. Make no mistake though, getting to play at home is a huge advantage.

That is how it is set up at this time. Hopefully we get our chance to be host next year. I'm sure you will enjoy our facility and the ride.

As far as how Grainger fans reacted, I can not comment. I left with :30 seconds to go. It is a long ride and I need my beauty sleep!

Congrats again to the Lady Cyclones. They played well and deserved the win. Hope to see you again next year!

  8. I didn't say anything about the Grainger facility or it's adequacy to host a Regional. Your assertion the Grainger gym "is far nicer in every aspect" is a stretch. I get the criticism of the dressing rooms and bathrooms. While the court side seating may be newer at Grainger, it is hardly better based on pictures from the school opening press release. It appears to be the typical bench style seating used in most new gyms which are not very comfortable. As for the D2 venue, you need to deal with your D2 administrators about that selection. D1 has nothing to do with that choice as far as I know. CD has hosted for D2 as I believe has Greeneville. I understand the point of the fairness of a team playing on their home court, but that is the way it has been. It's not any more unfair for D1 teams to play on D2's home court in even years than vice versa. A neutral site every year would be more fair to everyone, but I'm not sure how practical that is. There are facilities that fit the bill, but availability is likely an issue.

As for the comment, it was definitely made by a Grainger fan (not supposedly). It was clearly out of line. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your new facility, but that doesn't make it okay to criticize other's facilities. Regardless, good luck against CAK.

Sorry I upset you there Sparky. You did not hear the comments yourself, so that is hearsay. That is why I said supposedly.

You were the one praising your facility. Just thought I would point out its inadequacies. I stand by those.

Chair backs are a nice touch, but no big deal. Sight lines from up top are not very good. Bench seating for the teams looks to be lousy also. Facts are facts and the truth hurts.

I gave your team credit. They outplayed Grainger. That truth hurts as well.

Have a Great Day. I will.

  9. Good luck to the Lady Cyclones tonight against a very strong Grainger Co. team. They are undefeated which is an awesome feat. Some might question the strength of schedule. While there is some merit to that argument; there is no doubt it takes talent, guts and strong will to go out and win every game. The same kind of things were said about the 2011 Lady Cyclones who lost in the first round of the state tournament. Regardless, that was an awesome Betsy team and this Grainger team is awesome in their own right. That being said, It will be a very tall order, but I too believe the Lady Cyclones have a chance tonight. They will have to avoid a slow start, play up to their potential and likely get a little help from the Lady Grizzlies to win. Go Betsy!

As for the venue for the regionals, I believe there are several factors. I do believe the standard practice is to alternate between districts each year. However, there are other factors to consider. First, the venue must meet the TSSAA requirements for seating capacity to qualify. Secondly, the venue must be willing to host. I believe there are other considerations as well, i.e. the centrally located criterion mentioned before is another example. I don't believe there is any limitation placed on whether a participating team can host, at least not by the TSSAA. For the record, this is the first time in several years that D1 has hosted the AA regionals and it's been even longer since Elizabethton hosted. As far as the facilities, I believe Elizabethton is a good fit. The court is full-size (college standard), well-maintained, well lit (which is not the case in most high school gyms) with adequate parking. Additionally, the gym seats 2000 with the pull-out bleachers up top and the seats on either side are fully-backed individual seats (which not that many gyms have). Just a note: I missed the semi-final games on Monday, but I was told by a Cyclone fan that a Grainger fan (possibly even a Grainger parent) made the following comment upon entering the EHS gym the first time: "What a s%!+hole to play in." I thought that comment a bit ironic. First, the EHS gym is far from a s%!+hole!!! Secondly, I realize Grainger has a big, nice, new school with presumably a nice gym (I have never been inside); however, that has not always been the case. If I'm not mistaken, Grainger Co. replaced the old Rutledge High that was old as Methuselah. Maybe the Grainger folks would rather play at CD Middle School where the R1-AA was held a few years back.

D1 hosted 2 years ago at Sullivan North. Elizabethton gym is barely adequate to host a Regional. Bleacher seats are horrible. Can't see the action under the goal on the end the bleachers are on. Only 2 dressing rooms that are in the gym. Some teams must dress in rooms by a swimming pool that are used by the swim team and are not well maintained. Not nearly enough restroom facilities available either.

The Grainger Facility is far nicer in every aspect(not just presumably so).I don't know about the comment that was supposedly made. If true, it was out of line. Yes the old gym at Rutledge was small, but they don't play there anymore Grainger should have the opportunity to host the Regionals and hopefully that will happen soon. It is not a one way street the distance is the same in both directions.

Hats off to Elizabethton they played Great and deserved the win. Surely they would not be opposed to playing the Regionals on the home floor of anither good team would they? I didn't think so.

  10. Grainger will be fine. Not sure about those early predictions. They lost 4 starters from last season. Young team. Young teams are inconsistent from game to game and sometimes during the same game. Their young guys are talented, just need experience. They have some really close losses. It's Greenevilles to lose. Gap is second IMO.

  11. Seymour was without their starting PG who didnt travel with the team due to illness, not saying Seymour would have won with her...but she is a spark for that team and that team goes how she goes

Grainger has been without their starting PG all season long. She is recovering from ACL and is starting to play a few minutes. Only played last night after outcome was decided.
  12. Irnhead, I seen the cd/grainger game as well and I agree the only cd player that stood out to me was the pg. No. 12 was supposed to be a good shooter but evidently had a bad night. I sat near some grainger fans and they told me that they had 3 sophmores on the court most of the night. They had a big kid, probably 6'6 or 6'7 and he made the inside shot when they got the ball to him, but he turned the ball over a lot and wasn't much on defense or boards. 31 was good on defense and seemed like got 1/4 of their points from free throws. They didn't hit many 3's. If they were playing 3 sophmores they may be good in a year or 2. I would definitely agree that Greeneville is the team to beat. I hear that Gap isn't bad and played them close the first time but I don't see that happening again.

It seems like GreenPap only goes to Grainger games.

  13. Grainger lost 4 starters including their three leading scorers. PG is good player, don't remember his name, but doesn't score much. They have size Greeneville, Chuckey-Doak, and CG return the most players. It will be interesting to see what happens. I'll pick Greeneville, Gap, And Chuckey Doak.

  14. BearClaw you win the oscar here for over dramatizing some of your issues here. But I will give you this one. The last play of the game and foul by 40 was an obvious foul. Not excusable. Yes she got a tech for intentional foul. She earned that one. The last minute of any game any foul is intentional. One Foul by one player does not constitute your trashing the whole team as unsportsman. There are twelve other players on that team and there were no other fouls of that nature If that be the case, then instead of previewing your Grainger Today photos, go back and what your game films to the second period of the game where in Ricker got called for a foul where the Grainger girl grab her by the pony tail and ripped her head over and did not get called...Your issues with door slamming, obvious is a continued issue in your Gym. Can't be the first time. When you dont have the Shocks on the top of the doors that control the doors and you put a metal plate against the wall for the door handle, then obvious your school is well aware you have a door with problems. Without the proper hardware on the door you have a free swinging door. It does not matter how you go through the door it will hit the wall. So bring down your dramatization a notch or two.

Nobody is giving you threats. When you travel to other gyms you will get some refs that are going to call the game on a more even basis. A foul is a foul and refs besides the ones you had will call both ways. Your girls play defense the same way as many other teams, including SG.

Got to shoot you down again NE15. The door does have shocks and there is tension on the door. It does take effort to slam it against the wall. The metal plate you speak of doesn't exist. No need for it. Come see for yourself. You obviuosly weren't there.

  15. All other BRAC teams. Word of wisdom. When you go to Grainger to play. The door going to dressing room swings freely and does not have shocks to control door. It will slam against the metal plate on the wall. If the door slams your team will be accused of being unsportsman like by their fans.....

Don't know where you get your information from. The door does not swing freely, it does have shocks and there is tension on the door. It takes effort to slam it against the wall. The metal plate you speak of does not exist, there should be no need for one if the door isn't slammed by unsportsmanlike players. Need to check your facts next time NE15.

  16. Their saying he could see around 15 minutes a game.  Which is excellent considering he is a walk-on, but he is the real deal, he just needs to bulk up a little more to see extended time.
I don't think bulking up has anything to do with Skylar's minutes. He's much stronger than Hopson or Tatum. He'll have to show that he can defend on the ball. He does a great job defensively off the ball as evidenced by the steals he's had in the exhibition games. He's a tough kid that was All-State in football as well as basketball. Much better athlete than most people realize.
I'm not saying you're wrong about his strength. But from what I've seen he lacks the size that Hopson and Tatum have. I hope McBee has a great career in orange but with the highly touted recruits already committed and several others on the target list this could be his one and only moment in the spotlight.
I am not saying that you are wrong either, but did you think he would be in the 10 man rotation as a walkon freshmen. Not many people did. He has proved people wrong at every level and I believe he will continue to do so. Highly touted players are fine, but they do not have a way to measure heart and desire. Noone has more of that than McBee. Some may have as much, bot none have more.
  17. I don't know if he would leave but from what I have seen the past two seasons at GP he can turn a program around. "Boxn1"Didn't they finish tied for 1st in the District last year and lost their best player to an injury at the start of the district tournament if not would have played in a district championship? They also made it to the championship this year, they beat us in the semi-finals with average talent team. Boxn1 they had those two bigs inside but guards were average at best!! Not better than Union,Cumberland Gap, or Claiborne and definitely not better than us. No one was better than McBee, his post player was a wash with Humph and Framer was better than any wing they had.

Union won the district last year. GP returned everyone except Holzer from the previous year. McBee was the best player in East Tennessee. Both GP bigs (both 6'6") were better than Graingers posts. Their point guard was a Senior who did not turn it over and played Great defense. Better than Graingers PG. Maples and Farmer were a wash. As I stated though they were an experienced Senior laden team that 1-7 was as talented as anyone. They finished 4th with that team. They had been together since their Sophomore season when they finished 3rd. It was not a program that needed to be turned around. He inherited the team as Juniors. He is a good coach and did a nice job.

  18. Everyone talks about all these young coaches in the area and I believe the best one around is the young guy from Gatlinburg Pittman. Don't know his name but saw him coach against my grandson's team and he does a great job! Great motivator and looks like he is a winner.GP has been pretty good last three years. Any comments on that?

He took a Senior laden team at GP last year and led them to a 4th place finish in the regular season. They had more talent from players 1-7 than anyone inthe district. They did finish 2nd in the tournament, but laid an egg in the regionals at home. Not taking anything away from him, but you may be giving him to much credit. He hasn't really won that much so far. Next year will be a real test for him.
