  1. Sometimes you see a post that poses a mystery. Becasue millington was eventually involved, this one bordered on mysterious. As you already knoiw the Millington Melrose game was close, 1 point until the end. According to Coach Newman at Melrose, the Overton/Melrose game was 55-37. That got them to Millington.

Well shoot. Love a good mystery but I was hoping for Scooby Doo and the Mystery Machine

  2. Bartlett will be 1 of the last teams in this district. Manassas was without Buckner and Anthony Dorsey both starting bigs and stll won by 18pts. if buckner played Manassas would have won by 40pts. Manassas really didnt look great 2day but still won by 18.

I believe it was 14 in the end and the game was closer than that most of the way. I could be wrong on the final but I was only keeping stats for Bartlett so I wasn't paying much attention. I still don't think Bartlett will be among the last teams in 14-AAA. We'll just have to agree to disagree on that point.

Is Buckner ok? Hope he's healthy for the season.

  3. I saw Bartlett scrimmage Collierville saturday. First off, Collierville looked very unathletic and really didn't know much of what was going on. I will say that both teams scrimmaged with freshman first, then jv, then last with the varsity. Bartlett dominated in all three. I will have to figure out the young man's name, but Barltett has a freshman from Shadowlawn Middle School that starts on the Varsity Team. He is the best Bartlett has seen since Jonathan Loe!!! Great things to come for the Panthers!!!!

That young man's name is Anthlon Bell. He will be a lot of fun to watch.

Keeping in mind this was a scrimmage and nobody was showing all their cards so to speak. The freshman were fantastic but they still have a lot of work to do. This is a very talented class. JV is always in flux with guys coming up from Freshman and coming down from Varsity but they played great saturday as well. I wouldn't exactly say they dominated the varsity game, at least not all of it. It was, though, a very solid win for a young bunch of players. The Panthers had a great start and kept playing hard. The guys did an excellent job of closing out the game and I was impressed with how everyone kept their composure when Collierville cut it to 5 late in the game. Last year, that's a game situation where Bartlett likely lost. This is a new year. A new start. I know all the coaches are very excited about the season.

  4. You are correct and I apologize. I will just say that it is accepted as "what you have to do if you want to play" in our community. The middle school players are not all 8th graders and the middle school is not a member of the TMSSAA. They will not be playing in games I am sure - just practicing with the team. As for where I am from - I have to live in this town, so can't really say. My kids don't play, but many of their friends do, so we wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble.

Understandable. Sorry to come across as confrontational. Of course, you know your situation better than I ever could.

  5. Can a coach demand that girls participate in open gym? Our coach got angry that our daughter did not participate in open gym and participated in an exposure event. He said she didn't follow the rules and kicked her off the team before TRYOUTS! /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> What are our options? Can she leave an optional program for her neighborhood school without sitting out?

It doesn't appear that she did anything wrong by the rules but she came close and actually has nothing to do with open gyms. According the the TSSAA by-laws, once a student is listed as eligible if that student participates in an independent game( regardless of whether admission is charged or not) in that sport before the season ends then he/she shall be ruled ineligible for %25 of the number of contests allowed in that sport by the sports calender or for the remainder of the season in that sport, whichever number is least. A 2nd violation will result in a student being ruled ineligible for the remainder of the season. Since this occurred prior to the season ( and even before the 1st official practice date of Oct 27 ) then there isn't any problem as far as rules are concerned. That's the only thing that remotely comes close to any real violation and I just mention this as a point of reference.

I don't understand being kicked off the team for missing an open gym though. Was she a returning player? If so, the really doesn't make any sense. Open Gyms tend to be required for returning players for conditioning reasons and missing it would usually result in extra "ladders" or something of that nature but not expulsion from the team. In terms of a transfer to another school, there would have to be a change of residence in order for her to be eligible at another school. It would have to be both outside the current school's territory and inside the new one's. However, a student must also be enrolled in a school before the 20th day of school of a semester, in regular attendance, and carrying at least 5 full credits during the present semester. That all said, I would think she could transfer now and be eligible for the 2nd half of the season. I'm no expert but this is just what I get from my reading of the by-laws on the TSSAA website.

  6. I don't think it is within the rules, but I know the high school coaches here have what they call "open gym" but it is required that the players attend and they run drills and scrimmage each other according to the instructions that they are given by the coaches who are there to observe. These open gym sessions are not advertised to the student body in general - only the basketball teams. They also allow some kids from the middle school to come and practice with the high school team which I do not think is within the rules.... It seems like it is just accepted that if you have a good program, you can demand whatever you want to of your players and the communities just accept it.

That very well may be in some places but don't generalize and say everyone operates in that manner. I know many who use open gyms to help evaluate both returning players and potential players.

In regards to middle school students, only 8th graders enrolled in a TMSSAA member school may participate

  7. and October so it seems......../roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Oh man, this series has made my week. One more Mr. Torre......one more

  8. Directly I follow McGavock, but my daughter has friends all over that she has played with. So indirectly, Smyrna, Riverdale, Blackman, LaVergne, Clarkrange, Wilson Central, CPA, MTCS, Father Ryan, Ensworth, Forrest. Whew! I'm sure there's more but I havent slept since Sunday afternoon so my brain's dead. Needless to say during the season I'm looking @ alot of box scores & catching as many different games as I can.

I hear ya there. Normally, I follow Bartlett and the rest of 14-AAA closely and then the Memphis area as a whole. Although, I'm going to be a lot busier this season and I may not get to watch as many Lady Panther games as I'd like. Still, I can't wait for the season to roll around.

  9. A peace offering...

  10. I would have to respectfully disagree with you MR. Drummer. I played at least three sports a year until I graduated high school. If it were not for some over zealous crazied band directors, I would have continued with both. I was given the option to either play in the band or play football by not our football coach but the junior high band director. I was second chair trumpet. It was then that I chose to play sports and give up the band. I did miss playing the trumpet but did not miss that band director and his hatered towards sports... especailly football. I went on to play on a state champion football team and even got to keep my jersey. My kids later used my state champion jersey as a practice jersey during rec league and was proud to wear it. Now they are playing in high school. I use my sports talents to coach mostly now and coach several sports (AAU Basketball and Select Baseball). I quit coaching football when my kids made it into middle school. There are many others like me who continue to play sports on in to their 50's and 60's. I know one day, provided the good Lord blesses me with good health, I will still be playing basketball when I am in my 70's.

I just wish SO many from BOTH, the sports venue and the music venue would not put so much pressure on kids to decide at such an early age. We have a NEED for both.

    Thank You.

  11. I don't want there to be a misunderstanding. I was saying if you don't like the rule that allows it during school time then go to the TSSAA. I was not implying that anyone was cheating. My daughter & some of her team play pickup games after conditioning. The coach has already left by the time they start.

and even then having the coach in the building isn't a violation.

  12. Ha Ha Too funny!! Don't want an uninvited guest showing up at your door do you? Most good programs "cheat." They can't stand not practicing. Tips can come in all forms--text messages, emails, snippets in the hall, study hall, etc. In my opinion, if you're playing, you're cheating.

I would say this. Not all good programs "cheat" but I'm sure many do a whole lot that is legal.
