  1. Indy beat brentwood in 3. Not sure of the scores. Brentwood never led till the third game. Indy pretty much dominated the match.

Ravenwood beat Indy in three. It was quick to say the least.

    Congrats to Ravenwood...11 AAA champ

  2. more than half the coaches have no idea how to keep stats, or what certain stats are. I read articles all the time that indicate more assists in the game then points. Or a team that has 14 blocks in a match..which is highly unlikely. I think it is more ignorance then anything.

  3. Did anyone go to the mid-tenn tournament this weekend at A-Game? Who were the top AAA teams there?

Ravenwood was the best team at the tourney. The other top 4-5 AAA was Indy, Brentwood, Collierville,Centenial and South.

The field isn't even close as strong as the BIVT. Collierville beat brentwood in three, Indy beat Collierville in two, brentwood beat Indy in 3 --all pool play. South won their pool and played St. Agnes in the tourny, not sure who won. Brentwood lost in the first round of the tourney, Indy beat Page and lost to a South Carolina team in the qtr final...SC team seemed to be the 2nd best team behind Ranvenwood. Collierville lost to Ravenwood and I think South beat St. Agnes but I could be wrong. Not sure how everything finished up, but I am sure Ravenwood and South Carolina played in the final. Hopefully someone can update us.

  4. kids were putting coins in water bottles and shaking them. I do know thats is not allowed by tssaa. the ref ask the students to stop and the complied.

Many times as the serve is tossed up i hear the oppising side fans yelling "side out now girls come on now." is this to distract the server?? your guess is as good as mind. also as soon is the player toss in the air the returning side is yelling serve is up. so again whats allowed and not?

cant have artificial noise makers, can yell while serving. as long as it isn't personal, offensive etc.

  5. Centenial can beat anyone in district 11 too. They are a solid team. You put them anywhere else and they are in the top of most other districts.

AS far as the rest of the state besides district 11

I think Soddy, Riverdale, South, Collierville and Houston. If ooltewah ever figurs it out...look out. THey are so close to being really good. THe state is very even this year it seems.

Siegel is a mystery...I have a feeling they will be there in the end. Until Riverdale wins a game in the tournament, it still goes through Siegel. It would be great to see those two make the state.

It is going to be fun. I think East TN is going to be crazy. A handful of solid teams out there.

  6. Finally a post relevant to the state tourney field.

Indy certainly gave South fits at the BIVT. Not overwhelming power but pick everything up and play very fast.

It is ashamed for the team that doesn't get out of the district. I think that Ravenwood, Brentwood and Indy are 3 of the top 5 in the state. Ravenwood has beat BHS and IHS, IHS has beat BHS twice in 5 games and BHS lost to Ranvenwood in 4. Indy and Ravenwood went 5 and I think they have another one left coming up.

THe district tourny will be brutal.

  7. So who will make it to the state in AA, AAA? Amazing the season is half over, typically by now, 6 of the 8 teams are pretty easy to pick. It is a little tougher this year I think. The east and middle tennesse is a tough one to pick. Memphis AAA is pretty much a lock.

    Houston and Coliverville--lock

Ravenwood, indy and brentwood (brutal--3 best teams in the state?)

Siegel, Soddy, Riverdale, Ooltewah--Wide open--RHS unproven, Siegel and soddy returners. OHS is scary.

DB, South, AC-tough picks (who is missing from the east?)

Looks like Page will battle it out again this year with Redbank?

    Fun stuff to think about.

  8. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/08/huntsville_high_volleyball_tea.html

Ravenwood and Indy both made it to the qtr finals. Ravenwood looked great almost beating Huntsville, but lost in three. I think that may have been the only match that Huntsville went three with. It was fun to watch.

Indy beat Greenwood in the first round badly (bowling green) and then lost in 3 to Grissom in the qtr finals as well. They were without their starting OH all weekend, however they had 2-3 girls step in and do very well. They beat Centenial in three I think as well. CHS was without one of their good player. CHS looked very good.

Brentwood also looked good at times as well. THey had a brutal pool first day. THey lost in the first round of the tourny. The top 4 team of 11 AAA are REALLY good. All 4 are no doubt in the top 10-12 in the state...and maybe higher.

Very proud of all 4 teams and the way they represented our state and their schools...very good kids. Hutchison was also in the tournament and looked pretty solid too.

  9. This is complete crap. DB's setter was the best volleyball player in the state. Not to mention best setter. Their Middle is better then all three of the middles listed as well. How can you say they did a good job selecting this team? Find me a better outside than Riverdale's OS as well.

I am not saying the kids on the list arent good. I think the coach of the year should have been Karns coach. Who wins at Karns? Ever?

  10. NAIA volleyball teams cannot compete nationally (typically) if they dont have some foreign players. THe reason is because the eligibility rules for the NAIA are less strict the NCAA. Most of these girls could play at any program in the country, they just can't get through NCAA clearinghouse. THus, the best NAIA teams in the country are chalked full of these kids....as well as american kids that can no longer compete at the NCAA level because of grades or the transfer rule. THe top of the naia can compete with anyone because of this (this goes for baseball as well)

many of the brazil, Argentina, bulgaria etc kids are in their mid to late 20's when they come over here and play.

So if you want to win a championship in the NAIA, you better recruit them, cause if you dont, Cal Baptist, Lee, Columbia, Point Loma and Fresno Pacific will...as they should.

  11. Anyone?

Is there a consistant pattern to the number of candidates chosen and are choices based on position team placed in state?

For instance more candidates for first place etc.? and is there a pattern to the players' positions ex: # outside, # right # middle, # Setters, # DS and # Libero etc.

I realize Sr. Hutson was named MVP for the tournament in addition she can be on the All-State Team.

Do All-State Players chosen have to be in the state tournament with their team? I thought Kylann Scheidt from Farragut made the All-State Team however Farragut lost Substate to DB last year?

Yes...there is a consistent pattern. The teams that make the state...have the best players overall. Riverdale didn't make the state..but the have one of the best players in the state.

Another all state level player is the outside at Brentwood as well as their middle.

  12. Yes I remember last year the All-State team was presented early December around the 10th. I guess there is no set time.

Riverdales outside hitter was the best outside in the state this year IMO.

DB's setter-Rutledge--she is the best player in the state.

    DB's middle

Indy's libero is the best in the state IMO as well.

ravenwoods middle the senior Madilyn Hudson

    Indy's middle Caroline Carlton

    Brooke Faulkner Siegel OS

    Karns best middle

    Maybe Ravenwoods setters...both really good.

I would like to think there is an all state player in AAA from Memphis, but I didn't see anyone.

  13. Why dont we just get rid of TSSAA and play club level since we have no high school coaches anymore. This is going to be a mess this coming year. Karns is already looking for the best players at club level. Someone better watch the chicken house, the fox is on the prowl. TSSAA ISNT GOING TO DO IT!

If the parents want to move residence to play for Karns...then more power to them.

  14. Pageman, I heard from a parent a few minutes ago that coaching was a issue. Karns didnt work on or use to its advantage all the options they had. Was coach Williams that bad there? I too feel they had the talent but were under coached at times.

I find it interesting when people get on here and take shots at a coach that took their team to the state. It's KARNS high school. SHe has turned Karns into a very good program--which is amazing in itself. Until a couple of years ago about 10 people outside of Knoxville had even heard of Karns Volleyball. They also didn't have the best talent. They had a couple of really great players with good players around them--just like the other 5 teams that weren't in the finals. (the notion that they were the most talented or athletic team there is crazy) Their serve receive hurt them, and if a middle dominated team doesn't pass, middles are almost useless...but the two teams that beat them are very good serving teams...probably the best in the tournament. And beleive me...I am sure that Coach works on service receive everyday. So take a step back and look at their season. THe two best teams in the state were DB and Ravenwood....there is no debate about that. was Karns a top 4 team...probably so, they just got beat by a great defensive Indy team and a dominant Ravenwood team.

Congrats to Karns and Coach on a great two year run.

  15. We'll for domination or dominating- here are some facts; Ravenwood vs Karns first round, Ravenwood 3 Karns 1. Close games with "the best team so you say". Karns over Munford- Karns dominated in the match yes 1-2-3.

Karns vs Independence 3:1 Karns and Indy were well matched and stayed neck and neck for most of the 4 games. Trading leads by 2 or 4 at most. Indy took the first game by a few then back to Karns. Both teams had runs leading by 8 at one time and then returning to close finishes.

Karns just couldn't pull ahead at the right time and finished the day today. A marvelous game of volleyball!

I agree Bigfoot. Karns wasn't dominated at all. I was really impressed by Karns...they just got beat by a couple of good teams. Indy prob played their best match of the year and Karns just couldn't close.

The top 5 or 6 teams in the state were all good.

  16. Dragon your right it never will pay for the cost of this but at least think a little more outside the box. You could at least pull some more students in but in the eyes of TSSAA, Lets just get it over with!

Unfortunately Edge....I HAVE TO WORK! HAA! I might get to see a couple of late matches. I understand what Dragon is saying. But look around at other states, they seem to work it out. (many of them do anyway)

  17. I agree. Ravenwood, Dobyns-Bennett and Karns should be upset. One of the 3 top teams will be eliminated early- no way around it, allowing the teams with weaker records (based on what I see) to push through farther. I am sorry to say that we may have a blow out in the finals and no body likes that. ( no disrespect to any team intended). If the officials setting up the brackets did a great job it will be proven by a tight match in the finals. We shall see.

So you are basing how good or bad the teams are based on record? Karns has 5 losses and munford has 6. How many do you think they would have if they played in the district with Ravenwood, Brentwood, Independence and Centential?

I am not saying they aren't good, cause they are. I really like Karns a lot. But Indy has played Ravenwood 6 times this year. Which is more losses then Karns and Munford has total. You have to consider who these teams are playing. That is why you can't seed based on records. Other wise Munford woudl be the #1 seed.

The finals will be the best two teams...

  18. What's sad is that because the volleyball tournament is on weekdays and in the day many parents won't be their either. Especially from the far corners of the state. I understand the location/court issue, however can it ever be that the biggest volleybll event for the teams of the year will be held through a weekend? Everyone is used to tournaments being held over a weekend anyway. Splain the basis of this to me pleeze.

Bigfoot, I completely agree. The time and dates of the state tourny are crazy. I am sure it does come down to court availablility, but there has to be a better solution this Wed and Thurday.

  19. I these brackets are correct sounds like the top half got screwed! TSSAA IS A JOKE! More than likely they are seeking a huge crowd from siegel! Karns, D-B, Ravenwood should be very upset. Three great teams who get screwed again by a bunch of old men sitting around a table. Anyone from siegel on that board? Ive seen it before! Tired of this and will not attend and pay money to see anymore TSSAA STATE TOURNMENTS! What a joke!

How did the top half get screwed? You have to beat whoever is in front of you. It is an eight team double elimination tourny. The two best teams will be there in the end. It is a tougher bracket, no doubt.

And don't try to throw siegel in this either. It wasn't their choice to host and if I were to bet, they would prefer not hosting. It is an insane amount of work for the coach, parents, and admin.

I bet you are right, all the Siegel people were at TSSAA this am, fixing the draw. I think they actually submitted the bracket to TSSAA and they just went with it.

Not sure how TSSAA is going to make it without your gate money either. Seeing how they play the tournament during the day and middle of the week...there will only be parents there anyway.
