  1. It is a personnel issue sometimes Juice, however in my humble in opinion it is a lack of confidence from a teaching stand point. Most of the good programs use a form of that very play. As far as a set goes it isn't a tough set...just tough to time it like you said. Also, it pretty much has to occur on a perfect pass...which can be few and far between sometimes!

  2. PH i so agree. these are the types of posts i expected to be on here when i first heard about this site, not the attacks of the recent past.

    anyway...

so, am i to assume a good serve receive player is generally your best passer? and the one "hidden" may be a good digger or backrow hitter?

i hope i havent embarrassed myself with that question :thumb:

That can be true cause there is nothing better then having a great attach in the back row. High School teams overall lack depth thus they have to put someone back there that may be a young soph or they cover tips only, so they don't have to dig. Usually your primary passers are your best diggers as well. You are lucky if you have two really good ones. A good serving team can't take advantage of that one person....thus they hide them behind the two better ones.

The next time you watch a well coached team, pay attention to how a coach will serve receive, most of the time the left front hitter is receiving, and they typically are your best athlete. A great example is Kat from Brentwood--she is a great defensive player as well as a hitter.

  3. Thanks. I understand that, but why put a back row player in who they hide the whole way through. Baylor also only seems to set in to the middle. It may not matter ow but will that predictability cost them in the end?

Setting middle exclusively can be a problem, however hiding one person on the floor for serve receive makes complete since. Most teams do this.

  4. The only question I have is why would you play somebody in the backrow that you have to hide? That is what JV is for.

You hide a player in the back row that doesn't serve receive as well as someone else on the court. A coach's primary goal is to have 2 -3 primary passers on serve receive.

Since you have to have 6 players on the court, you have to hide someone. Many times your left front is one of the best passers, thus you back her up in front of the left back to serve receive. The girl who is "covered up" then calls in or out--that is her only job. That doesn't mean the LB can't serve receive, it just means that there are others on the court better.

A good coach should be able to work it out that the best three passers on the team serve receive almost every serve. Depending if you have a setter that can make the transition from the back row.

This is the difference between a coach that understands the game and one that doesn't. So many coach's allow the "back row" to serve receive no matter what. Even though they have maybe two front row players that are much better then the girls on the back row.

There are some girls that are good at playing defense, but not as good at serve receive.

    Hope that helps.....

  5. This was a good outing for Cookeville, in fact, looks as if teams were close.

THis tournament didn't have a totally dominant team like in years passed. Mcgill-Tollin was absent from the tournament and that made for more parity.

All the TN teams had a really good tournament. Cookeville and Brentwood stood out, however Father Ryan and Siegel really played well also. It was amazing how close the 3,4,5 and 6 teams were.

The Cookeville - Grissom and Siegel - Pelham matches were really fun too watch.

The amount of individual talent in the tournament was so impressive. The most talented team was Northview but for some reason they just couldn't play together. They no doubt had the most talent--they are an Atlanta team.

Grissom's setter was incredible. Maybe the best setter I have seen in High School as far as fundamental skills go.

  6. Wish you had been there, too. Got to see PageMan briefly this morning and look forward to seeing him next week. Picking ND was big. They played as well as I have seen them play, when they blew us out this afternoon. They were clicking on all cylinders.

How did South and farragut look?

  7. Does anyone have any information on the Southside Tournament?

Brentwood v Grissom in the finals

Father Ryan and Cookeville in the consolation

They didn't have a tournament, just the top 2 teams out of the pool played the championship and the 3 and 4 played for consolation. Not a well ran tournament.

TN schools played great. Final places in pool play was 1-Grissom 2- B-wood 3 and 4 was cookeville and FRHS--not sure what order and Siegel was 5th, Bob Jones 6th. There were 2 pools of 5. Alabama pool and TN pool (with one Ga team)

    The teams were outstanding.

Siegel finished 3-2 losing to Bob Jones and Grissom. Cookeville looked great and finished 4-1 in pool I think. They lost to grissom as well.

Siegel beat Pelham (very good), Southwest High and Ashville.

Not sure how the finals turned out.

  8. No I agree with your assesment. No question that Div 1 volleyball is better. That wasn't my argument. We were talking about Div 2 volleyball and the limitations NAIA have--which are many in most programs. But I was referrign to the best in each division.

I too had the option of playing low Div 1 ball and chose not too. Losing at a school like UT Maritin or Morehead or Tenn Tech, was not as appealing as winning at a DIV 11 school....or naia for that matter. Just a personal preference. Losing stinks.

I would have jumped at the chance of playing at an SEC school...just didn't have the ability.

Your assesment on why kids would transfer from D-1 programs in baseball rarely has to do with playing time in my experience. Mostly trouble, grades, failed drug test or the "two transfer rule".

  9. Good point on the international rosters and age restrictions for NAIA, but there is still the issue of scholarships available. If I am not mistaken, D II wins out on this and therefore can distribute that money to more players. It would be interestinng to look at the schedules of the previous D II and NAIA champions for the last 5 years in volleyball (or any sport for that matter) and see if they have crossed paths at anytime and to see who has fared better.

Kind of odd how some NAIA schools are strong in one sport and really weak in others. Makes you think coaching and recruiting have a lot to do with it.

Not necessarily true Cat. There are a lot of NAIA schools that are funded the same as Div 11. Recruiting is everything is the NAIA, because you have to get Div 1 talent to compete nationally. Finding that Div 1 talent is a trick, because they are few and far between. If NAIA Vball coachs don't have national contacts and international contacts, they just can't hardly compete.

You mentioned Cumberland Volleyball for instance. They have had very little success latly because he recruits largely the state of TN and mostly Frsh. Look at Martin Meth. They have international players..or have in the passed as well as LEE.

Look at Cumberland Baseball. Almost the entire roster is made up of Div 1 or Juco kids as well as latin america kids. Most of these kids would not be eligible in NCAA. CU can compete with anyone nationally because of that. The great naia volleyball schools are the same.

  10. The Top NAIA is better then the top Div 11. The only reason is because there are not nearly as many restrictions in the NAIA, thus they can recruit 30 year old brazillian players as well as ineligeble NCAA players and JUCO players that can't get into an NCAA school.

Look at the rosters of the top NAIA programs...Brazil, Yugoslovia etc.

This is the same reason the top NAIA baseball programs can compete with anyone.

  11. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your team. I was very impressed with the level of play that I saw from them on Saturday at Blackman. Where did the girls play before? Do they play any club? Where?

Just 6 short seasons ago Wilson Central opened as the first new HS in Wilson County in 100 years. We pulled from Mt Juliet and Lebanon. It was a very interesting first year and I have still have the "inaugural" t-shirt to prove it!

Enjoy this very special season, there will never be another "first"...

They have to figure out how to play defense...cause their offense could be really good eventually.

    I hope they do well.

  12. Well, we play both of them this weekend at the Blastoff. So, let's see how that goes first!

HMMMM....thought I could get you going! This weekend is going to be incredible.

A team could go 0-6 and no feel too bad about it!!

  13. GPS looked very solid tonight (3-1 over Ooltewah) and I definitely would expect them to make it to state with out much trouble. I know most of their older girls but was impressed with how well some of their younger girls played. Although, now that I think about it, with the amount of club experience the entire team has, it should not be a surprise.

Do you think OHS can beat Cookeville or Siegel in the Sub State?

  14. CATU, what did you think of the play at the Choo-Choo this past weekend?

Catuballer---I finally agree with you about something! The South setter is a GREAT player. Who has been really good for a long time. I remember seeing her play as a Soph and thinking that she was a senior.

I would also agree about Cookeville MH. Very good.

(I sure do like Siegel's MH's and setter as well...wouldn't tradem for anything)

I would like to hear Cat's take on the CHOO CHOO.

  15. Sorry, I misunderstood, South's demeanor is different then most, but when the

season starts you will see a different style all the way around. Thank you for

the compliment, its nice when someone from a different area says something

good about the teams from the east, it doesn't happen often. Good luck to

    all of the teams.

Sullivan South has been there before. I think they will have another final 4 appearance. The setter is as good as anyone in the state. Has to be one of the 3 or 4 best players at any position.

Farragut and South both are going to be really hard to beat in the end.

  16. What a fun game to watch. FRHS came out really strong and went up 2-0 and Siegel came back and won the next three.

Teagarden is the real deal offensively. She had kill after kill and she also seved about 12 straight points in game two. Their two setters are also really good.

FR looks almost identical from last year. I thought they were the best team then and I have to think they are another final 4 team. Once they get their defense squared away...look out.

Siegel played well the last three games and all three were within 8 points or so.

The two middles had several blocks.

  17. A recap of last year's participants might give some insight into this question.

    West Tennessee

    St. Benedict

    Harding Academy

    Hutchison

I have not heard anything from these schools yet

    Middle Tennessee

    Father Ryan

    Harpeth Hall

    BGA

We got a look at BGA at the Choo Choo play day and they look talented again this year. Father Ryan's Emily T. will play D-I in college but I have not heard anything else about them.

    East Tennessee

    GPS

    Baylor

We have yet to see our arch rival (Baylor) play. This will happen this coming week-end at the GPS playday. They have all the weapons for a return trip to the State. Webb is a big unknown this year. They have picked up some new players (tall ones I hear) but we will not see them until Sept. 22.

GPS played well at the Choo Choo play day and should be a strong contender for a spot in the State tournament.

Siegel plays Father RYan today. Will give update tonight.

  18. I was so anxious to see how this would come out. I wasn't going to be able to be at the game so I was going to rely on others to get a guage on OHS. I can't imagine how awful that trip must have been!!

I saw the ERHS and Siegel match at b-wood and ER didn't play well and SHS played really well. Plus ER was down a player from what I read.

OHS is a pretty big rival for Siegel. They have had some incredible math ups especially 2 years ago. THey are a great program and have a great coach.

i wonder if they will try to play later????
