1. Lafayette had some problems with the officiating during the Page classic. Several officials would call lifts when our girls returned first ball with a set. This was a little frustrating because this call is not made in KY. First ball serve receive here is almost anything goes. Also, very few officials would call double contacts and there were a BUNCH of them. Our girls got away with some too, but for the most part our girls make very few of those type errors so it was definately an advantage to a couple of the lesser teams we were playing for the officials to be letting them go.

In our own tournament this past weekend we had some officials that didn't call double contacts either. My theory on this is that in both of our states the level of play can be so bad in some areas officials get used to letting ball handling errors go. I dont like it, but I prefer to believe that than having officials that just dont understand the rule.

THe interesting thing about all this is, I am not sure who is making the right call.

Compassion you are right about Chatt...I forget that is considered East TN. There is a difference between Knox and Chatt. And just to be clear I am not saying that East Tn officials are bad. There are some good officials over there, just much different then Middle.

  2. definately will be good match between siegel and cookeville.

    but siegel will take all.

7 AAA is starting to play out as expected.

I don't know everyones district record so update it if you can.

    Siegel 6-0

    Cookeville 6-0

Riverdale 4-2 --not sure but that seems correct.

Siegel plays Cookeville Tues at CHS. Should be a good one. If Riverdale can get their passing/serve receive down they could be in the mix come tournament time.

Bradley Central is coming to Siegel in a week or so. Ought to be a great match...a rematch of the Sub State last year.

  3. I can hardly wait either VBallDaddy78.  The Brentwood people always put on a great tournament and their parents do an excellent job with the food.  They probably will have 4 courts - courts 1 & 2 in their main gym, court 3 in their auxillary gym close to the main gym, and court 4 at Brentwood Middle which is just down the block - most people just walk to it.  There will be top notch officiating here - maybe even TheGreatLineJudge will make an appearance.  I'll warn you in advance to watch your ball handling as they call things a little closer than East TN officials.

    See you Friday afternoon.

    825746951

Pageman you are right but "a little closer" should be more like " a lot closer".

It is unbelievable to me how different the calling is in East Tn. I am not saying we are right or they are wrong...but is not even close.

if you get an East Tn official at State then you can basically get away with most borderline lifts that you would not get away with here. It is an advantage sometimes. And again...i honestly don't know who is right or wrong sometimes.

  4. How can Baylor appear on top of Ooltewah again this week? I heard that Ooltewah has beat Baylor Two times in the past two weeks?! Whats up?

    825746940

that is not the "official poll", it is just a post.

read the post before it. Line Judge advised that someone posted it but was their preseason poll.

  5. Comments:

It was good to meet ComPassion and VballDaddy78.  Also it was good to talk again with DaddyDeuce and another coacht poster from Sullivan South.  I also had some good conversations with some parents from the other teams.

I was disappointed it that Page didn't make it to East Ridge as I missed the great food they have there and watching the Gold bracket with its great teams.  Maybe will get there next year.

While it was nice that Red Bank got to play on its home court for the Sat. Pool, I did not like that I didn't get to see the 3rd place pool that was originally scheduled there.

The room I had at the Comfort Inn in East Ridge was not very good.  Several lights were out, the refrigerator was frozen up so you couldn't open the doors, and when I set-up my computer, I couldn't access the internet even though there was a computer connection on the room phone.  After a call to the front desk, they finally corrected the problem with their switch board.  The connection was extremely slow (about 27K) and I couldn't access coacht for about 30 min.  By the time I finally got on, I was too tired to post much Friday night.

Saturday was a extremely long day as I stayed after Page lost out to see who won win the Silver Finals.  There were several good matches during the day, but I was worn out at the end of the play and the long drive back to Bethesda was almost too much.  At times, I would forget where I was as I drove along 24 west.  I was lucky I made it back.  It was good to get home and sleep in my own bed.

    825746455

What was your opinion of Cookeville..if you saw them and SUllivan South. I really thought they would atleast make the GOld tournament. (south)

  6. siegel beat guntersville in 3 and also beat pelham in 2 on friday night

siegel defeated blessed trinity in 2 and curry in 2 saturday morning and was defeated by bob jones and mcGill toolen on saturday also...

the lady stars did awesome, in my view.

    825746177

Yes the stars did well this weekend. Going in everyone was a little unsure becasue of injuries to our Middle--Carrie Parrot. But once again the girls stepped up. There was some great players and teams at this tournament.

At one time Siegel had 3 sophmores on the court and they were all doing very well.

McGill Toulin Catholic is about as good as it gets. The offense was so quick you just couldn't read where they were going. THey were our only lost in pool play.

We got beat in the qtr finals by a good Bob jones Team. The first game was a good one but we lost 23-25. The second game got away from us 16-25.

    Overall a great weekend.

  7. 25-12 25-12 25-13

Siegel played well, even without Middle Carrie Parrott--

Parrot hurt her ankle in practice wed and may be out for a few weeks. But not to fear, Soph Morgan Faulkner stepped up. She played great.

Carrie was missed and hopefully will be back soon. Carrie is the glue that holds this crazy bunch together...the monster slide will be back!

    Stars are 6-0 7-AAA

    13-1 overall.

  8. Warren county has a good all around team.  They have fair height with no real standout.  I saw them play Tullahoma last evening and have seen several teams in district 7 play and I feel they will fall somewhere in the middle of their district.

I would say their greatest strength is their serving. They did beat Tullahoma in 2, but Tullahoma is a poor serve return team.

    825742086

Warren County has finished last in our district for several years in a row. Our district is really down this year so this may be their year to finish out of last place. I have not confirmed this but I heard they beat White County, which I was really surprised about. I thought White County looked pretty good when we played them...although we beat them fairly easy.

You can expect the unexpected. They have very little offense but somehow will get the ball over the net. Their defense is ok, in that they will dig the ball up and then push, tip it, karate chop it, drop kick it...anyway to get it over the net.

Siegel beat them in three a week or so ago, but they really struggled to get in a groove.

Their Coach seems to be a terrfiic guy, he has been coaching them for a long time from what I understand.

  9. I agree Huntsville volleyball is ahead of Nashville volleyball.  They should be.  They have at least two strong club programs, NASA and RCVC, and maybe one or two more in the area.  In addition, those girls go straight from their club programs into high school programs where the coaches are, in many cases, the coaches from NASA and RCVC.  In addition, McGill Toolen's (great team from Mobile) coach was the coach at Spring Hill College.  You can't hardly compete with that.  I only know three programs in the Nashville area, Franklin, BGA and Harpeth Hall, that have coaches with strong volleyball coaching background.  As far as club programs in Nashville go, their weakness lies in the lack of great coaches available in this area.  There are only a handful of quality coaches for a large number of teams.

You are right about Alabama volleyball getting closer to Louisville volleyball.  I believe one reason is that volleyball is appreciated, respected and reported on in both those states.  Great athletes are attracted to the sport.  From what I've seen, only the Chattanooga papers do a decent job of following high school volleyball in Tennessee.  I rarely see articles in any Tennessee newspapers about our college and university volleyball teams.

You do need to do a little homework on one comment you made.  Huntsville High School volleyball is not made up mostly of NASA's 14 year old team. That makes for interesting reading but is simply not true.  They have one 8th grader, one freshman and four or five seniors and the rest juniors and sophomores.  Their junior setter is injured.

    825740401

Ivolley is right about the coach's. Being a college coach does not equate to knowledge. Siegel's coach coached in college for 4 years and I have watched a lot of small school volleyball where the coaching was average at best.

For example in district 7AAA almost every coach atleast played in college, which makes a hugh difference.

The difference in players is starting age and talent...in my opinion.

  10. I think Siegel has alot of Senior Star Power- Horenkamp and Cutter are of course very strong, but the right side Sara Lucas has been getting alot of kills. She hasn't gotten any recognition but she is strong. She got a kill all but maybe 2-3 times in 5 games with Father Ryan (who has 6 foot plus blockers). Siegel also has some other senior power with a strong Libero, Kelly Davidson, and a hard-working second setter Caitlin Weller.

Taylor Parrish (senior) from Harpeth Hall is the best in the state- she's awesome- I had fun digging her :thumb:

Brentwood has an awesome right side, but I don't know her name? She's their most dangerous surprise/weapon

    825735332

The senior class at Siegel High School has put Siegel High Volleyball on the map. THey went from a new program to the State Quarters in one year. It is amazing the success the 6 of them have been able to accomplish...HOWEVER, they are one goal short, but I think they can do it....it will be fun watching them try anyway.

  11. So, I got curious and tried to look up the number of respective state volleyball championships represented in Huntsville this weekend.  I was WAY off guessing around 20.  McGill leads the pack.  There may be more, AL was listed from 1974, TN was only listed from 1997, and KY from 1997 on the KHSAA site.  And I'm not sure but it looks like there is only one division in KY.  Is that right Digs?  BTW, what happened to Assumption in 2003?

    Homewood, AL (AAAAA) - 2

    Huntsville, AL (AAAAA) - 4

    Grissom, AL (AAAAAA) - 6

    McGill-Toolen, AL (AAAAAA) - 18 (whoa)

    Bayside, AL (AA) - 13

    Harding, TN (DII) - 1

    Germantown, TN (AAA) - 6

    Brentwood, TN (AAA) - 6

    Sacred Heart. KY - 1

    -------

    Total = 57

    825735447

your going to have to give us all the scoop on Germantown. I haven't heard much about them? I know they are good.

  12. Should be a fun one to watch. According to schedule, varsity and JV are both in action Wednesday afternoon beginning at 3:30. Three solid Nashville area teams- BGA, Brentwood and Father Ryan- should offer a great afternoon/evening for the volleyball fan, especially on a Wednesday. Wednesdays don't usually offer much in the way of action, especially a fantastic trifecta such as this.

Hope someone can post results tomorrow!

    825734232

    scores?

  13. Bring on the Polls...they are good for conversation and maybe, just maybe, they will create a little bit of buzz among the media member that frequent here.  I think all will agree that our great sport needs more exposure.  Maybe there is a way we can get coaches/media/officials across the state involved in this process.

    825734283

I agree with Vols. It is ridiculous that TSSAA dosn't have some kind of ranking so we must try to do it for them...does it mean anything...no not really, but it is fun to talk about and read.

Let all the Middle Tn Bias talk start!!! Sullivan South is trying to change all that though!

  14. Your formulas appear to be correct to me, ghost.  Stats kept by teams can be questionable as you pointed out.  Sometimes teams will pad their stats so that they appear better than they actually played.  Since stats reported by teams to newspapers are sometimes in error, I don't know how useful they are.  I know when I try to gather stats during a match, I make errors or miss things.  It's hard to see & record every play so I gather what I feel that is important to note.  Serving, Scoring, Errors (if possible), and Subs are all that I can keep up with and still enjoy the game.  I assume most teams have several team members or others keeping up with digs, blocks, assists, return errors, & other stats they find useful to improving their play.

    825733183

Agree, last week after Siegel roasted Riverdale, the paper said that RHS had over 20 blocks. That is nuts. THey barley scored 20 points let alone have 20 blocks.

Stats are useless. If a team averages 4-5 blocks a match...not game, they are doing really well. Obviously RHS counted "a touch" as a block.

  15. I was advise that my name was used in vain on this site. I do not know who these people are nor will I participate in this.  If you want to discuss any thing with me my e-mail adress is RogerHBrock00@Hotmail.com or look me up at the games.

    Good luck to all.

    825733081

Thank you Roger for putting that debate where it needs to be. For you who don't know, the Brock family has been involed with ER Vball for a long time. Although I don't personally know them I have heard nothing but kind comments about the mom and daughter especially.

Lets also not forget that the setter for East Ridge must read all of you tell her she is weak...when she is not weak, just inexperienced at this point, give Coach another 2 months with her and then see where she is at. You will never hear anyone with sense say that Brock is unstoppable and that ER is the State Champions. Healthy debate is fun, this is not the Football or Basketball page where anything goes. There is a small group of people who love volleyball and who post on this board thus it gets a little to personal sometime.

Ok back to Volleyball talk... We need to get the always fun and highly debated rankings together.

  16. The JV Match is scheduled for 4:30 PM and the Varsity begins at 5:30.

    825732178

What a terrific match. FRHS beat Siegel in 5 games.

I will attempt to give scores.

    25-23 25-18 19-25 20-25? 15-12

Siegel was down 2-0 and fought back to make it a series. It was a great atmosphere and both teams played hard.

Siegel JV swept the FRHS JV team 2-0

  17. LaVergne hasn't played Cookeville this year so they haven't had a chance to struggle against them. :thumb:

    825732212

I stand corrected! I thought I read on the score sheet that you had played them, but it must have been AC..which you obviously played well against, even though you got beat in two. I see your team improving a lot this year...so young.

  18. Each week why don't we rank the top 4 teams in each class?

    AAA

Brentwood - The best until they are beaten.

Sullivan South - Athletic with the best setter in the state.

    Frankin - Looks strong early.

Cookeville - They don't make unforced errors.

    A/AA

East Ridge - Probably unbeatable at State.

    DCA - Always dangerous.

Boyd Buchanan - Played well at Early Bird.

Anderson County - Young team getting better.

    Division II

Father Ryan - Will be tough to beat.

    GPS - Lots of energy.

    Harding Academy - Great fans.

Harpeth Hall - New coach is making a difference.

    825731934

If you think that Cookeville is better then Germantown, Ooltewah, Independance or Siegel, then you haven't seen any of those teams play. Siegel, OHS and GHS made it to the state last year. Siegel didn't lose a single player and Germantown didn't lose much either. OHS took a game off Brentwood this weekend and Independance is just a solid young volleyball team.

Cookeville struggled against Blackman and LaVergne. I think Cookeville is a good team but to say they are the 4th best AAA team in the state is a stretch.

Did cookeville win that tournament? They are a much improved team which really helps 7 AAA this year...which is down. I really hope they make it to the State, it is good to see Cookeville competitive again.
