With some teams across the state playing Week 0 games, It's High School Football Time in Tennessee! Whitwell and Sequatchie County will open their 2005 slates on Friday night at Tiger Stadium at 7 PM. Last season, Sequatchie County defeated Whitwell 20-12 last season, with the Tigers having two blown scoring chances in the red zone.
Whitwell will be looking to extend their playoff streak to 5 consecutive years behind new head coach Phillip Condra. Condra, a former Tiger assistant, takes over the job this season after former head coach Wes Green took over the principal job at Whitwell High School.
The Tigers finished the 2004 season with a 5-7 record finishing 3rd in Region 3-1A and reached the second round of the playoffs with a 20-7 win over Monterey. This season Region 3-1A has expanded to 7 teams with the departure of perennial powerhouse Boyd-Buchanan and Silverdale Academy, Tennessee Temple, and Grace Academy coming in.
Sequatchie County wound up with a 5-6 record missing the playoffs, but participated in the Upperman Bowl, losing to York Institute 42-20. The Indians will have a new look for their region as well. Boyd-Buchanan moves up into 2A this season, while Meigs, Polk, Tellco make the move to 3A.
This game will also feature 2 Murphy Fair Preseason All-State members, one from each squad, Whitwell LB Ryan McGowan (JR) and Sequatchie County lineman Chuck French (SR).
