  1. Hey volman, I can respect that assessment of the program. I thought this year could be different as well, especially since you had several "just basketball" kids, limiting the hangover affect from football. I'm specifically looking at talent though when looking forward. Whether or not the coaches can get it out of them or help them cultivate it is another question...let alone the game plan. I still believe this team can make a run. We must have consistent effort from each player to win though. One big problem...we haven't figured out how to beat a zone defense.
  2. "I hate to say it, but it's not going to get better................." Dang Volman, why so harsh? The JV won the bigger percentage of their games and so did the Freshmen. Beating the big 3 will be tough though. SH is loaded going forward. DB will be just average for them athlete wise, but Morgan seems to keep them progressing throughout the year. THS looks decent, but not great. Boone looks good next year, but falls off after that. Crockett, Volunteer appear weak. Central seems decent. Crawdad may be right though...finishing 4-5 might be all the lowered expectations can manage. I do see "potential" to finish higher in 2011/12.
  3. I've been reading your posts about South. As an avid fan, I've watched many south games and still find myself asking the questions you mention. Why weren't they more prepared when Bailee went out? Where's the energy and emotion from Coach P? Doesn't the future look slim? My thoughts are these: I do think the coaching staff could be more emotional, motivating the kids a little more. I think South programs give too much credence to grade level. I understand this year's team is senior laden, but that experience doesn't always translate. I think, generally speaking, that it has. However, while these young men are playing solid basketball, I think several had limited upside potential to begin with. That should be when you start priming your younger talent. You will probably have to deal with rookie mistakes, particularly early, but the upside potential would be well worth it come tournament time. As for the future, I think next year could be tough because this year's juniors are limited. I expect most of the starters to be the upcoming Jrs and possibly a upcoming soph or two. This years freshmen team is pretty talented and deep. Whoever said 4-5th next year as a success could be right. I think the following year will be better though. Good luck in the tourney Rebels!
  4. Sorry for the misinterpretation Comp My bad. As for the other, I would welcome the passion and discipline she would bring. Not to mention she would take the girls' success and failure personally. Tommy, I agree with comp...walk a mile. The current varsity were great in middle school and JV just like the current team. His lack of concern, knowledge, effort, etc wears you down. If he stays, I guarantee you this JV team will end up different...loss of heart and passion for the game, players will leave the program, and they will have learned nothing about the game nor improved since leaving middle school. Write this down: with him still at the helm, no team in the next 4 yrs will finish above 5th seed and they'll have to do that on their own.
  5. Good luck if that's what you decide. Be careful which program you choose because it's hard to make in roads if you are not home grown As for me, I'm more of a let's fix the problem kind of person.
  6. I agree with some of what you said and, as parents, everyone has to decide what will give their children the best opportunity to succeed. As for DB, they need a coach as well. They've lost to a non-coached South team 3 times in a row, 2 on their home court and this includes using City/County players. I disagree with your thought that the poor old county schools have to settle for sub par performance from coaches, teachers, admin. It's a job. If the management does their job, they get rid of underperformers. Unfortunately, no one at South is willing to do their job. I promise you I could find a quality replacement in 2 seconds. Congrats SH. You've played well and deserve your success. Good luck to all teams in the upcoming tournaments.
  7. I've heard people say they've tried...to no avail. I don't know the truth behind those statements. Most want something done, they just want someone else to do it. One thing seems certain, he seems to care about the girls personally. Unfortunately, he doesn't care as much about their vision of success on the court. You speak of Mak. She's proof he doesn't care about her future desire to play college ball. How else do you allow her conditioning to be so poor, limiting her success on the court. I agree, girls are different and how you reach and teach them is different. Motivating is way different. But these girls are 16-18 yrs old. They know he don't care, so they don't care much either. Wins against DB simply show they have the athletes to win a lot of games and he's proven he can't get it done. A few years back with Pickwell and Williams, we were 18-7?? when we should've lost 2 games at best. We lost first round region against a much inferior Mo East?? team. The girls got as far as they could without a coach. Such is life in the big city.
  8. "Has South won when the Campbell girl plays bad? Has South won when she plays good? Its not all just on the Coach. How long you all going to beat a dead horse? Anyways on to better things" The COY thing was a joke...you did see the laughing man. As I stated earlier about the South girls, there is enough talent to win the district this year...but we aren't close. Not 1 girl has played to their potential. And yes, this is a direct reflection of not being prepared...whether in game plan, conditioning, fundamentals, and attitude. As comp stated, we have potentially great players that moved on to other sports due to the depressive state of the program. I've got 7th/8th grade parents coming to me asking how to get rid of him and that many are considering leaving the school district because of it. So yes, it is a coaching problem... Sorry Comp, no one cares enough to do anything about it...here or anywhere.
  9. Oh yeah...all conference: DB: Devine, Gray TH: Burleson, Honeycutt SH: Reid, Hensley Vol: Lindholm, Gilliam Central: Kestner None from the other 3 schools IMO. Being a rebel fan, we are poorly coached, poor conditioning, deflated effort most of the time due to being unmotivated. Basically, I don't think one girl played to their potential due to the previous statement. We do, however, get self motivated to play DB...can't imagine why.
  10. Coach Tate from South is hands down coach of the year.....not Seriously, I'd have to say SH coach...Barnwell I think????? POY: Devine probably....Engelica Reid is definitely a difference maker though. Dpoy: I think 23 from Tn High, Fletcher from South, or Burleson from Tn high Underclassmen: Hillary Gray? from DB, 23 from Tn high, maybe lindholm Just some thoughts....
  11. Apparently, not everyone thought so high of Stacy...
  12. Wooten sent the signals in, but let's be real about who made the calls (good or bad)...Stacy. I personally like HJ and have had more contact with him over the years. Does that mean I feel he would be a good OC....not really. I think he's a strong motivator and disciplinarian...some of the things that made Stacy successful, but as for play calling...I'm not sold. I also don't think Wooten will be the next offensive guru...not experienced nor proven at any level (player, coach, parent, etc). I think that if the staff stays together and works together, we'll be fine.
  13. My understanding from a good friend of his is that he wants his career to lead to college coaching. I can see some reasoning in moving to a bigger program(6A) versus staying at a county school with declining future enrollment a certainty. I can also see value in nearly doubling your income, but Stacy never seemed to be motivated that way. I, for one, wish him the best....except against South Rebels. My loyalty now lies with our new chief, Coach Haynie.
  14. Coach Haynie is officially "the man" as of this morning. Good Luck Coach.
  15. My understanding as far as Haynie and others going with Stacy is that there are no teaching jobs open, so they can't go...at least right now. I also heard same thing about Haynie being in charge at this moment but nothing permanent yet. Thoughts on the future, I think the current "staff" as a whole is good. They each bring great qualities to the table, however, I'm not sure any one of them will make great head coaches...Haynie, Hilton, Jordan, etc. I do think continuity would be better than starting with an outsider on the short term. Everyone knows the current system. The coaches already know the kids, their abilities, attitudes, strengths, weaknesses, etc. They just have to see who has worked the hardest in the offseason, improved the most, and wants to earn a spot this year. A new coach has a lot of preliminary assessments to do, which I feel could be time better spent elsewhere. The upside of a new coach is "every" kid has to prove themselves again, which is a good competitive thing. I hope we pick the right person and as a South Athletics supporter, I will continue to do what I can for the program. Go Rebels!!!
  16. Stacy will coach the QB...you can bet on it. Does that mean the other has to go...not necessarily. Somebody stated that Stacy was a great fit for South and they were right. These young men believed early and fell right in line with his discipline, work ethic, etc. I don't think he'll find that at SH. Oh yeah, he'll find some but this great base of athletes mentioned will not clamor for football...not where discipline and serving team over self are concerned. There is no room for self serving, poor work ethic and attitude kids. He'll make every effort to help them, but that only goes so far. He won't let these things negatively effect the team. So although I wish him the best, I don't think they will contend for the title next year. If SH gives him the time, >3yrs, to get the buy in, he can turn the program around. We'll see.... As for South, the talent, hard work, and belief is still there. We just need the right person for the job. I hope the South staff stays virtually as is. We know the system works. Good luck to both South and Stacy Carter next season.
  17. I'm hopeful for South. If Coach Tate will just get out of the way, do a little subbing, and let they girls play, we might pull off another upset. These girls can play if they forget everything he says and just get after it and make plays. His quote on Tricities Sports was awesome after the DB game. He said "As far as X's and O's, we really didn't have a game plan...We just executed flawlessly". The glaring conclusion...we execute "no game plan" flawlessly shows his inadequacies. This program continues to fall apart because our coaches don't care(excluding Rowe), let alone the fact they know nothing. You can't take 9 days off in a row over the holidays one year, 15 of 21 off this year, and have any expectation...hence the embarrassing defeat at Tn High last week. You can't never show up at middle school games to encourage the girls about their basketball future at South. You can't fight with the middle school coach because you fear she'll take your job. We've played half the number of games then the other teams this year. Why? Because he'd rather stay home with his family. We skipped camps this summer because of his knee injury. Can't the other 2 coaches handle things for a couple camps? And no, the schoolboard nor principal at South will do anything. There commitment is no better. OK, obvious frustration from a South Athletics fan. My conference picks...right now it's SH, TN High, DB....the rest is up for grabs with the exception of Boone and Crockett.
  18. Rebelsfan2 says "its all about the chms boys and who the pigskin pparents say who should and shouldnt play its a fact". Sounds simple then fan....send your kids to CHMS or become a pigskin parent
  19. Core, I agree 100% with what Crawdad wrote...the coaches do a fine job of finding, teaching, strengthing and otherwise preparing our team for the games. I just tried to put a few examples showing that the coaches give opportunities to all....hence the 9 defensive backs used statement and that 30 of 66 players had been utilized a fair amount this year. I just then asked for the ones who disagree with that to name some current roster players who they felt were not given a fair shot to play or who could've have helped and possibly change the outcome of some games. I'm just a simple Rebel lover you see
  20. You are done. Heck, you started it. I think I've been clear...your starters will be proven and picked between now and next season. At least that's how SC and the staff have done it before. I'm sure they have some preconcieved notions of the frontrunners due to performance this year and that's to be expected. I do hope some of our lineman who've quit in the past come back out this year. I think we lost tons of experience in that spot. Work out hard Rebels and let's try to keep the winning tradition going!!!
  21. Some are starting to sound like disgruntled parents when others are just trying to talk football. How does this sound for proving no spot is guaranteed from week to week....9 players played/started at defensive back...watterson, haden, zanoni, shanks, rowland, riddle, shipley, hutchins, wagner and medlin. That certainly looks like the coaches are looking for the best to me. If you are suggesting our LB core needed work...you are off your rocker. Oh yeah, the qb choices looked good also. The line was mostly full of seniors. Rbs looked solid as well. Let's see, I'm still trying to see your issue. By the way, who I am or what I know has nothing to do with me responding to whiny parents about our team and coaching staff. If the coaching staff has proven anything, it's that they have a great deal of integrity, fairness and character...so find something else to pick at. We will see what kids want to earn a spot next year by their offseason workouts, spring drills, and practices leading up to game one.
  22. All I stated previously were the facts of who played a fair amount this season. I happen to feel those were the correct players, but utilization of them could have been different. I asked anyone reading this thread to look at the roster and tell me who you think deserved a longer look and have got no takers, including you Jhilts...still waiting
  23. Here is my count of players that started or played a fair amount: Nick Solt, Jay Conkin, Taylor McGlothlin, Dillon Hammonds, Ty Garvin, Clint Phillips, Ethan Long, Paul Wagner, Taylor Rowland, Ashton Zanoni, Heath Haden, Aaron St.Clair, Bobby Taylor, Seth Watterson, Ryan Fuller, Zach Ervin, Sam Conaway, Austin Hyder, Brenton Hubbard, Drew Shanks, AJ Hutchins, Cody Shipley, Austin Riddle, Brad Mckee, Jordan Cassell, Caleb Anderson, Wesley Williams, JC Garvin, Jason Johnson and Cody Medlin. That's 30 players. Obviously, some of these played more than others, but at one time or another these kids played a descent amount. Some playing time was limited due to nagging injuries(Riddle/Cassell/Shanks/williams). JJ would have played more if he was under control. "I SEE NO GLARING OMISSIONS FROM PLAYING TIME OR ANYONE ELSE ON THE ROSTER WHO SHOULD'VE BEEN PLAYING". Please list a name if I've overlooked a star on the sideline. Now as a player, fan, onlooker, whatever, I think we all would have done something different at some point or question a call (in hindsight obviously). Here it is though...SC is a good coach. So is his staff. Yes we have had talent, but not just anybody can make it work. We overachieved this year in my view, especially after losing a friend...not to mention a impact player. As a coach in a fast paced game, you don't meditate between plays thinking of who you could sneak in for a play or try to build experience. You are thinking about the next play. I agree though, that there have been times over the years that we could've pulled 1st string earlier or certain players in order to prevent injuries to them and build others. I will just say that overal, the staff uses their personnel well and used 30 of 66 this year. That's why you have to show up in practice and the weight room in the offseason. That's the proving ground.
  24. "Hopefully it will sink in and I think it will. Several coaches are to blame for this. Should have been addressed years ago. Like you said though, if it doesn't work out, it'll be a shame." quote from volman Trust me on this. No coaches are to blame for JJ. His antics have continued no matter the discipline that has been handed out. He's been benched, suspended, ran to death, etc. He's been analyzed, psychologized, exorcised, and proselytized to no avail. His comrades think he is bipolar. Anyway, he is a good kid off the field/court and will be an impact player. His full role, though, may depend on if/when he matures and will do what the coaches want. Good Luck Rebels!! Let's take it to them Friday.
