  1. BTW - can someone post some links to these Farragut stats being posted? Despite my distaste for the way some people are talking about this, I am a stickler for stats and am curious about what they're doing wrong. I found two stories but no box scores. One of the stories said the setter had like 50 assists while the other story said 50 sets -- that's a big distinction. Definitely need more info to figure out what's going on!

    EXAMPLE:

If a team played 3 games - each to 25 points and the setter had 75 assists- then she set before every single point. No aces, no errors, no over-passes etc. that's quite a lot. Is it possible? maybe. in 5 games with over-time it is entirely possible to have high numbers. 50 assists in 3 games is 16/set that is great! Is it correct? not sure. It is not an assist to set someone- they have to earn apoint from it. Just like basketball.......not every pass is an assist.

  2. On a companion post a CAK coach and parent pointed out that the Farragut coach is making up stats (saying that the setter had 60 assists when she had less than 10) and then sending them to the papers.

    Is that acceptable?

Doesn't it send wrong the message to the players? How is this different than cheating?

    YES.

All high schools should have a class on keeping stats. They should be recorded just like colleges to transfer over. Many schools don't keep accurate ones or any at all for a 'career high' stats. For this reason college coaches are aware they may not be accurate. ;)

In college the statistics are very detailed however with technology - lap tops and spread sheets it would be easy to keep stats as long as every one knows what to record and does it the same.

Assist: is the set which preceeds a kill/point. Any player can set someone for a kill. Kills are not always generated from a set. (ex. could be an overpass).

Points are not always generated from a kill- ex. errors and serves.

Kill: is a hit which results in a point. which can also be a dunk by the setter or tip from a hitter, or a well placed free ball .

Hitting percentage is the number of times a hitter touches the ball divided by (kills minus the errors by the hitter. Every time a hitter is set and tries a kill she should be counted= TAA. If she hits it wide, long or in the net it is an error. This is why sthe hitters in college will have a negative hitting % ina game.

Babe Ruth is known for having the home runs, however he also had the highest number of strike outs in the league.

A strong team may only play 3 games in a match resulting in fewer numbers; teams that play 4 and 5 games will of course have higher numbers but may not have higher %s.

Colleges also record digs, serving aces and blocks.

  3. For 3-4 years we have been learning about the scholarship world. Understanding NCAA rules and going one step more to understanding the process to GET a scholarship.

Too many parents rely on high school coaches; others wait too long to research schools, programs and most importantly what the child wants. College coaches are searching earlier and earlier for athletes to fill spots.

A parent spends hours upon hours researching schools to find out thier daughter wants to stay close to home. OR waits too long to check out open spots for players and contact schools directly.

I think college coaches can be overwhelmed and any work parents and students can do to eliminate certain catagories will save time and help to focus on the job - a realistic chance to play volleyball at the collegiant level and help pay for some or all of school.

Aside from reminding any student about grades while in high school; a high school student must undertand early what is at stake. The differnece between 2.9 GPA and 3.1 and 4.0 can be thousands of dollars sometimes the difference between going or not going or offers and BETTER offers.

In my recent experiences there is not just one way to get THAT offer. Some athletes tell me they were found by sending a tape, some were seen at showcases, some at camps and some were introduced by high school coaches. It really is work but before doing all that an athlete needs to be realistic about their choices and talent level. Don't wait on anyone to do it for you. Visit schools on line and on campus visits to determine size and layout preferences. Check courses of study and costs; ask coaches what players they need- they know if they need a libero or a hitter. Be patient while the process works and do what is best for you not what looks better to others. Remmber high school and college coaches are people too. Some may be good at recruiting but don't gamble your daughter's education on it.

  4. BF thought you had disappeared from the scene as well as a lot of the VB Knoxville area fans. Be safe during this time and Happy New Year to all of the fans in every part of the State. A lot are now looking forward to the VB event up close to Gatlinburg at the end of January.

Hey. Many thanks. The K2 tournament is packed with a mix of teams and should be a very competitive weekend. We will be there. Club season is in full kick-off mode. Noticed an increase in the # of teams for all clubs in this area. Great for volleyball. Very excited to see what the season brings. Will keep you posted.

  5. Pretty Snow! While northern relatives are chuckling at us with their 2 ft. of snow and more coming. Driving safely was a challenge for many in east Tennessee's hills. Many parts of west Knoxville had 1" of snow; much more accumulation in Maryville/Alcoa area, Madisonville and every where in higher elevations. Fun for the kiddies; and a Merry look for our Holidays.......if you didn't have to drive in it. Be safe in the boro.

  6. Gotta throw my 2 cents in.

    Karns' players get a vote.

I do hope the Sports Writers consider the extaordinary year from the 2 Senior Big Middles at Karns and are both recognized. Their stats are fantastic for the season and before. They are great hitters; each with different skills and strenghts that were utilized on the court. In addition, they both played all-round this; not many middles do this in addition to offence. This means they get no rest and continue to play the entire game. Both serve aces in every game. They are both going to play at the next level. #7 was recruited to continue to play back row because of her passing ability; an added bonus for her and her future university.

  7. WOW! You may want to check your facts!

As the mother of some Karns Lady Beavers, I can tell you that they didn't play in Franklin during the entire club season last year. If you don't believe me, check the SRVA web site. The Phoenix 17's played in Ohio, but Coach Williams was two states away. We played in Atlanta twice, but Coach Williams was 10-20 courts away with her team. We did REGISTER to play at the A-Game for a 17 Power tourney, but that division got canceled and we never played there.

I coached some of the Phoenix girls (including some Karns, Hardin Valley, Bearden, and Powell players) in Franklin twice last season, but Coach Williams never got to see them play in Franklin because she was busy with her team. We were also playing miles away at a local high school.

The Phoenix Rising Volleyball Club has girls playing from 12+ different schools in the Knoxville and Morristown areas. It's not just about Karns.

Gosh , I just love it when the facts come out. :thumb:

This means you can't trust accusations by some posters. "Here say". Everyone has a right to their opinion but base it on a real truth. not on The Edge of a k2ruth.

  8. Anyone?

Is there a consistant pattern to the number of candidates chosen and are choices based on position team placed in state?

For instance more candidates for first place etc.? and is there a pattern to the players' positions ex: # outside, # right # middle, # Setters, # DS and # Libero etc.

I realize Sr. Hutson was named MVP for the tournament in addition she can be on the All-State Team.

Do All-State Players chosen have to be in the state tournament with their team? I thought Kylann Scheidt from Farragut made the All-State Team however Farragut lost Substate to DB last year?

  9. PH The Edge is correct.

Edge comes from Farragut which lost their best player (Karns big middle) to recruiting, just like Powell lost its OH.

As has been reported here, the Karns coach is not very good, but she is a GREAT recruiter. The school could care less what is going on, and the TSSAA isn't going to get involved in volleyball.

I was at the state tournament and was not surprised. Karns had great talent, but you can't win without coaching.

Knoxville volleyball was down this year. Anderson County was a sophomore team, Catholic was hurt by a key injury, and Farragut had a new coach. Next season Karns won't even be heard from, unless more recruits are brought in.

This is high school, not college.

OK HERE GOES. I HAVE BEEN READING POSTS FOR SEVERAL YEARS ABOUT "THE FARRAGUT MIDDLE" WELL HERE'S A NEWS BULLETIN.....The 'Middle from Farragut'- was never recruited; she was kicked out of Farragut because of rediculous RE-ZONING. Her parents tried 4 times with no success to get her back at Farragut? Phone calls, letters, visits downtown, even tried the legal route but there was no way they were going to allow a kid to stay at FHS because it was 'over-crowded'. Maybe coach Moore (FHS) should have done something? Maybe the FH volleyball parents could have done more? Maybe Farragut should be mad at Knox County. Without rezoning she would have played for Farragut. (Recent articles predict they may re zone back....yet another story). The parents tried for months to work with Knox County School District but the answer was, "no way". The parents never heard of Coach Williams and knew nothing about Karns when they were told their daughter would have to change schools. She was devistated. Please quit spreading lies about what you think you know. You are making up stories about one kid. A good kid. and all this to get back at a coach or program.

Parents do what they can to see that their child has a good school and good future, by moving to Farragut Schools they thought.. Give 100% credit to them for doing their best with a bad situation- for heaven's sake DO NOT credit recruiting, that's insulting to the nightmare they went thru. The kid wanted to play volleyball in college; she loves it that much. She's that good. Now she will play in College with a scholarship for which she has earned. She signs this month to head to Wingate (N.C.) in the fall. We love her.

  10. Athletically Karns was the best team I saw at the state. They were big and athletic. I thought the same last season. They should have won a state championship, but they simply are not that well coached. Independance has no where near the talent that Karns has. However, they were coached off the court, just like last year. Poor use of time outs; failure to adjust the defense; and the most limited offense I have ever watched with that much talent.

The sad thing is that the program says the setter and middles were seniors. They played great, and hard. Nothing to be ashamed about. Coaching makes a huge impact on this game.

As far as Ravenwood goes, siegel is a better team.

Siegel is good. Some of the longest volleys I've seen with Siegel and Indy. I am truley interested in what you mean by-use of time outs, adjusting defense and can you be more specific about use of offense talent. I am sincerely interested.

  11. Not trying be smart, just had a guy down there at state who said they looked ok but simply outmatched and outcoached. And Hargis not putting any kids down just trying to find out a few things from the boro! I thought Karns all year to be in the top 10 teams in the state but simply weak at defense and not very well coached. Thanks folks, good job to all the ladies this year!

Of course after the games and matches we all have ideas on what to do differently; it's hard to understand all that goes thru a coach's mind and what options she or he has. Karns has 5 seniors who are the best on the team then with rotations it is a challenge to decide who to put where given the talent and versatility. The bench was not very deep. A big hitter is valuable up front however can be limiting in back defense- lest a back row attack. A 5' libero can't be best option for front row even with a great verticle jump. One single thing which cost Karns points (and maybe a few games) was missed serves. With close games 3-5 error serves in one game can loose a game. Coaching is a tricky thing and there are many things we don't know regarding what the coach has to work with. But your posts are genuinely interrsting of what you saw- not so much what was heard.

  12. I just heard that karns was dominated at state, any truth to this? I was afraid their defense wouldnt hold together and the pressure of having to do it this year or else would finally win out against them. Ravenwood is still the best team i saw this year, To bad beavers!

We'll for domination or dominating- here are some facts; Ravenwood vs Karns first round, Ravenwood 3 Karns 1. Close games with "the best team so you say". Karns over Munford- Karns dominated in the match yes 1-2-3.

Karns vs Independence 3:1 Karns and Indy were well matched and stayed neck and neck for most of the 4 games. Trading leads by 2 or 4 at most. Indy took the first game by a few then back to Karns. Both teams had runs leading by 8 at one time and then returning to close finishes.

Karns just couldn't pull ahead at the right time and finished the day today. A marvelous game of volleyball!

  13. With recent struggles to organize around the state tournament, it has brought to the surface frustration with school administration, costs etc. So how did basketball and football become sanctioned? Let's reveal the beginning and continue to push for the same with volleyball. Volleyball is no longer a game from gym class, however it is obvious it does not get the respect as does other sports. Does the money come first? ticket sales? or if the game is promoted the sales will come?

I loved basketball and still do; until I was introduced to volleyball! Our team will be participating in the State Tournament; with that being said we still are transporting the players to and from the hotels and games while basketball and football benefit from buses and other advantages during the regular season.

I am suggesting the much needed changes to see that the players and families are given the same opportunities the other sports get----sooner. Your input is requested.

  14. What's sad is that because the volleyball tournament is on weekdays and in the day many parents won't be their either. Especially from the far corners of the state. I understand the location/court issue, however can it ever be that the biggest volleybll event for the teams of the year will be held through a weekend? Everyone is used to tournaments being held over a weekend anyway. Splain the basis of this to me pleeze.

  15. I am tired of the talk. If I hear another Anderson County or Karns post I may stop getting on here. So AC beat Farragut. What is the big deal?

It is frustrating that only a select few teams get talked about.

Promise? oops sorry; I just had to.

Now that's not fair to oust plugs- your year will come and then you will be typing again..... Let teams get all the glory when they are shining. Each year or two it changes which makes it very interesting. Who would care if one team only ever won year after year......b o r i n g. (I know! Maybe accept for the winning team of course). Even then it wouldn't mean anything.

:thumb: Here's for the teams who have lost every game and still show up for practice and work hard. Here's for the coaches who want to throw their hands up but don't give up on the team or the parents. God Bless them all! Let's here it for character. It's easy to support a winner.

  16. I watched a great match last night. Anderson County beat Farragut in what may be a Regional match up. Farragut has pulled ahead of the pack in their district, and Anderson County is the most improved (by a mile) team I have watched this year.

It was senior night and Farragut won the first game by 2 or 3 points, but neither team played well. The second game AC went out to a big lead playing the best volleyball I have seen all year, from anyone, then just stalled. Farragut didn't really do anything to get back in the game, AC just let up.

I thought it was over, but AC made a statement, winning the next 3 in impressive fashion.

I think the Farragut coach (who is in her 1st year) was a little intimidated. She didn't make any adjustments when AC switched up their offense, and once the AC coaches pushed their defense deep to take away the corners it was over. Not meaning to be critical, but you have to make adjustments and Farragut didn't do anything different to mix it up when AC took over the match.

AC had a great crowd, and when they got fired up they just exploded. I honestly have never witnessed a more intense team. AC starts 4 sophomore hitters, but when the coaching staff got fired up they looked like a college team. I am biased towards Catholic, but the AC staff is amazing.

I enjoyed the whole evening. It was fun to watch, and exciting. The 5 th game was back and forth, but Farragut ran out of gas. I noticed alot of the Farragut players breathing hard. AC, by contrast, looked like they could have played another match!

    Good job to both teams.

Considering the depth of AC and now Farragut with only 7-8 players, it doesn't surprise me that Faragut ran out of steam. They would benefit by running laps (this week)for conditioning to keep up. I agree with the 'green' practices of Coach Davidson; her experience with strategy could make the difference as would the conditioning to outlast teams because of the limited players for Farragut. AC didn't fair well with Karns however who have strength, depth and conditioning to outlast anyone. They (Karns) have been able to go undefeated this year and usually in 3 games. But they have been known to play 23 games in 2 days and look very strong, win a tournaments while doing so.

If Farragut keeps it up they could take Bearden and Catholic in their district. AC is still second at best in their district. Regionals will be fun.(where is it this year?) Sub-state even more..........

LOVE THE COMPETITIVE NATURE OF THIS AREA!

  17. Having seen them up close and also having seen Karns and DB, I do not know if they are the clear cut best in the state. They could win the state but they are by far not the only team in AAA that could do so. Most people thought they were the best in the state last year as well.

Yep, I saw DB and Karns play each other- Brentwood Tourney head to head split both games close it was DB 25-23 then Karns 25-21 then DB pulled up with 15-10 to take the match, but it looked closer. Both power houses with each their own strengths. Karns over Brentwood at Chattanooga Tandem- nice touch. It will be a sight to see for sure as they regions progress. Some are saying Sullivan South could change things for DB's chances.? I pick Karns. :thumb:

  18. Karns and Lafayette (KY) fought it out -Karns took the Gold in two, a great match-up - would love to see stats on this match. It was amazing to see the power hits and blocks from both teams after this many hours of play. Lafayette runner up and then Columbia and Harding 3rd and 4th positions. Great competition and appreciation from all the coaches and teams attending. Many matches in both pools went to 3rd game pushing the finals back. The mix seemed to be good for those attending.

Good Luck to all the teams in their upcoming district seasons. :thumb:

UT fans took advantage of watching the intense finals and that win on the big screen between games.GO VOLS!

  19. ORCAT, If you think you have it bad then you should be at Farragut this year. We are taking our hits! Keep your head up! Karns and AC are the best ive seen this year. Both teams are great kids and are looking forward to the next few weeks!

I give Farragut a lot of credit- watching them during the Tandem- those gals were having so much fun! Brentwood got frustrated and made mistakes. We really got a kick out of their being excited about 'luck' shots. They nearly beat Brentwood- by just fluke hits and wild dives. They were relaxed and it showed. They will come back with hard work and family support.

  20. It is a mystery to me as to why schools choose different tournaments. As you mentioned - drive time is certainly an issue. Start time related to school schedules may be one, if they start early on a Friday may not be approved by administration. Competition- mixing it up in various areas of the state or outside the state can introduce various styles of play and different refs to the competition.

Money/funds may also have a consideration when looking at tournaments. If you only have so much to spend where will you spend it?

Personally I wouldn't want to continually play district or regional teams; I like to mix it up with ranked teams outside the area to test what you got.

I think some coaches aren't aware of where and when tournaments are scheduled; they miss opportunities and don't sign up early enough. Late registration and unknown protocol can mess up any so called plan. Seasoned coaches know the best tournaments and the 'invitation only' ones as well.
