  16. Thanks for the post. i was wondering how the idea was presented.
  17. Well I wish I had waited to vote until you made the change. I would have voted otherwise. i do not agree with only the Region Champ from small schools and only the top 3 from large schools going to state.
  18. I agree RC. If this is the way the TSSAA presented it, its no wonder it passed. Only allowing the top 8 I believe is an attempt by them to make sure no one votes for the split.
  19. I am not comparing the sports of Golf, Wrestling, Track, etc, etc as they stand as sports. What I tried to point out is that, why are those sports/athletes offered the opportunity to compete against schools of similar size and wrestling is not afforded the SAME opportunity. This same arguement took place back when the TSSAA decided to split wrestling into 2 groups back in the 1990's: Public and Private. People were outraged, stating that having 2 state champions would cheapen the sport. Really? Has it? No I do not think so, but you may. Are you of the belief that those teams and individuals that captured titles this weekend should be be proud of their accomplishments because Tennessee has 2 divisions? Those individuals and teams should be PROUD of their accomplishments. They are the BEST in their division! Congratulations to ALL of THEM!! The question was asked, did the large school coach's vote/ Good question, but should large schools decide what is better for the small schools? How can anyone predict that having a seperate state tournament for small schools would hurt the sport, when we really do not know and wont know until it is tried. 2 of the top 20 teams this year at this event wer Small school, with Pigeon Forge being the higher finisher with 4th. 5 of the top 40 were small schools. 8 of the top 50 were small schools. 39 small schools had kids qualify for state. Thats 39 out of the 139 schools that had qualifiers To save me some time, when is the last time a "Small" school won the state traditional title? I will state again: IF THE AGREEMENT IS THAT THERE WILL BE A SPLIT, WITH SMALL SCHOOLS ONLY ABLE TO SEND THEIR REGIONAL CHAMP TO STATE AND FOR LARGE SCHOOLS TO SEND ONLY THEIR TOP 3 REGIONALS FINISHERS I WOULD VOTE NO! Yes, wrestling is the 2nd oldest sport. But to deny change based on that fact is not valid. Wrestling has change a great deal since the first match was organized. Today they wear singlets back then Olive oil and sand. The rules today are no where near the rules that were used when the sport first became organized. Changes were made to improve the sport for the time in which people lived and competed and who knows maybe to increase participation. I bet they had this same discussion (not an arguement) back then.
  20. Great Accomplishment TJ. Congratulations and good luck to you in all you do. Hooker to Father Ryan???
  21. Just got off the phone with Cael, he said: "Who is this?" "Should Tennessee do what?" "Why are you calling me?" " Good luck, I have to go to practice. We do have the NCAA's coming up!"
  22. I too have a passion about wrestling and I love a good discussion and this topic is a good one to discuss. I did some quick research, so if any of the following numbers are off, then I should have taken a bit more. In GA, they have 433 high school wrestling teams (again, I quickly counted them) They have 5 divisions for wrestlings, so divided evenly, there are should be 86 teams per classification. NC has 342 high school wrestling teams (if my math is correct) the have 4 divisions: 91-AAAA; 95 AAA; 84 AA; and 46 A VA has 260 high school wrestling teams and 3 clissifications, A, AA, and AAA. So, divided evenly, there would be 86 schools in each division. TN has 155 Div. I wrestling teams (OK, again, I quickly went down the list and counted). So, we have Division I with 155 teams. So, lets divide it evenly, and that would would place 77 (hey, that is a pretty good dang number, 77)teams in each division. Now I know that there is a great deal of info/data/considerations that will go into classification of schools for this purpose, just as there is in other states. Well, with 4:30 AM workout ahead of me, it is time to hit the sack. Again, this is a hot topic, however I have been to Grundy VA many times. they are VERY PROUD of their SUCCESSFUL VA-AA Wrestling program. They have won many team and individual state championships and they are as proud of the latest ones as they are the ones that were captured when the state of VA decided to divide the schools into divisions to compete for state championships.
  23. YES I UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE TEAM SPORTS! Golf is an individual sport. Tennis in an individual sport. Track is an individual sport. Cross Country is an individual sport. All these INDIVIDUAL SPORTS and their athletes are allowed to compete against athletes from schools in their classification. My point is, why should wrestling not be afforded the SAME opportunity as these above mentioned sports. I did not compare GA with TN, I simply pointed out that they have multiple divisions because someone mentioned California. If the small schools want the opportunity, then why should they not be allowed the opportunity. AS LUDICROUS as it may sound to YOU, it has not been tried, so to assume that it will have no impact on participation is basically your opinion. I did not realize that this was an agrument, I thought this was a dicussion on the topic posted. I like it the way it is, however I do believe that wrestling should be afforded the same opportunity as other INDIVIDUAL SPORTS. I do not agree with only allowing the small school region champion to enter the state tournament. If this is the case, I would advise the samll schools to not agree.
