  1. I caught the 4th quarter of the boys game in person and listened to the 3rd quarter on the radio and am not sure exactly how it happened as I got there right after it went down but according to the radio there was a pretty controversial "mess up" by 2 of the 3 referees on a SG drive to the bucket. The official under the goal called a block against GHS and counted the bucket to put SG on the line for 1 shot but the trail official also had a foul on the play but he had called a charge resulting in what has come to be known as the infamous "Blarge" LoL...the officials got together and talked about the situation and subsequently wiped the bucket off, reported both fouls, and put the ball back in play at the point of interruption. Of course Coach Duncan from GHS wanted only the charge and wanted the block to be "over-ruled" and Coach Hoese from SGHS wanted the bucket and the blocking foul so he would be on the line for 1, but neither of those could happen...the referees blew this call completely but then they handled it the right way by reporting both fouls and wiping the bucket off and giving the ball back to SG. It sucks that it happened, but I have seen it happen in several college games and have even witnessed it once at the state tournament several years ago so it happens to even the most seasoned officials, which all 3 of them were considering the rivalry between the two schools.... Other than that one instance from everyone I talked to about the girls game and from what I saw of the boys game it was called as evenly as it could have been, which is good to hear because that is a game that could get out of hand very badly, very quickly! I remember the fouls were 6 to 6 in the 4th quarter when GHS started fouling to keep the clock from running out and if the first 3 quarters were like the last one then the referees let them play a little bit, but called the necessary fouls to keep the game from getting to physical and getting out of hand! Congrats to the Lady Devils on the upset in the girls game, and congrats to the Rebel men on the upset in the mens contest!!! I can't wait for round 2 to get here as we can see now more than ever that when these 2 teams meet up it is gonna be ANYBODY's game!!!!
  2. Landon quit a while back. I think Greeneville will be alright. They just havent found a rotation that plays well together yet. I thought Eathan Mashburn played well coming off the bench last night and Wes Quarles played really good. Although it will be very hard to win the conference now I believe the Greene Devils will still be around come March. Aside from the Carmichael kid, the "rotation" that you are talking about probably won't change. The Devils bench doesn't go very deep at all this year!!! The talent level is just down right now from where it has been in the past few years...which by no means am I saying that GHS is not a good team, because ANY team that plays DEFENSE the way Bill Duncan coaches them too is going to be in a position to win ballgames whether all the offensive firepower of the past is there or not, but the Devils may be in for a long year if the GHS faithful is expecting a year like that of the past 8-10 seasons again this year...And even if they do come together and start winning like they are accustomed to it still will definately not be "A walk in the Park" for them by any means!!! It's just now gettin cranked up!!! There is a LONG season with LOTS of basketball left! It will be interesting to see how everything unfolds the rest of the year!!!
  3. Heard through the grapevine that Carter beat GP by 6 last night...anyone that went to the game that can give a good summary please do! I knew it was gonna be a great ballgame and wish that I could have been there personally but had to work...maybe I will be able to catch round 2 at Carter...
  4. Grundy might be given some attention. Coacht has started a fan poll which is different than this and I think you might see the difference but it will cause of lot of voting. While I might not be right, District 13 is good but I can't believe with the strength shown here that both of those schools belong on top. Don't know who else they play in preseason but if they are that good, they should be playing some other top notch schools. and others should try to get matched up with them. If you got to go to the state tournaments last year and see Gibson Co. beat every team they played there by atleast 20 points, then you'd know how good GC is/was and that they were battle tested before hand with close games against Westview @ Westview and against Obion Co. @ Obion Co. We have played in the Westview Thanksgiving Classic this year against Liberty Tech who features a D1 post player headed to Southern Illinois (I think) and they also have very solid guard play around her as well. The next night GC played Bolton, who defeated Westview the night before, and beat Bolton by 44. GC also played Ensworth in the preseason and beat them as well as Franklin Road Academy. They also played Brentwood Academy losing to them in a game where Butler was unable to play due to her running in the state cross country meet where she finished 3rd in state. Also, Gibson Co. had a tournament scheduled to play in Florida last year, but something prohibited them from being able to play in it. You can't say that Gibson Co. has backed away from competition. They play who is on the schedule and they play hard every game no matter who the opponent is. What "big time" tournaments do you guys think GC would get to play in? There's not that many "big time" girls tournaments around here except for the Marshall Co. Hoopfest which hosts the same teams year after year. The only other teams here in rural West TN that would really give GC a good game would be Lake Co. in Single A and Millington in Triple A. Millington is also a hour and a half drive from Gibson Co. so that is pretty much ruled out. I can assure you that Gibson Co. will be battle tested by the time the post season is here. I will also say Westview and Obion Co. will be battle tested as well. How about the Greenbank Ladies Classic in Greeneville? I know you would have to travel East to play in it, but every year there is a really strong field with teams traveling to play in it from not just all over the state but also from all over the country! Last year there was a team from California that made the trip "cross country" and I know that a team that won the Florida State Championship back to back years with undefeated seasons came in a few years back also...they did not accept the invitation to come back the following year though after losing more games in 4 days than they had in the previous 2 years !!! Welcome to Tennessee, huh? lol....Anyways this year the field is mainly comprised of teams from Tennessee and there are only 2 out-of-state teams in it, but those teams are dominant girls basketball prograns from their respective states. Two time defending Champion Wilson Central is back this year, along with a very strong Morristown West team who underachieved in the post season last year but returned everyone this year including 2 D-I signees and is one if the favorites to win the state in AAA this year. South Greene will be there trying to make it one game further than last year and win the tourney again for the first time since the Larry Ricker era in the early 90's, and everyone already knows that the lady rebs can play some ball as just about every post on this thread has them ranked 3rd in the state in AA...It is going to be another great tournamnt I am sure! It is coming up the last week of this month so you should check it out, and maybe look into seeing what it takes to get an invite next year! The tournament has become well known for its extremely strong field and with a resume and reputation like GC has I am sure if a spot is available they would love to have them fill it! It is always fun to see how all these teams from accross the state match up with each other, as well as watching all our Tennessee teams match up with some great programs from around the country!
  5. Varsity games use 3 man crews, are you sure you aren't talking about the B-team officials? If it was the junior varsity game then it is not a suprise at all that they were of "upward basketball" quality because the jv guys are either brand new officials who are still learning the ropes or are the ones who don't listen to constructive criticism or work on improving enough to eventually move up to calling varsity games...if it was the varsity game maybe it was 2 "rookie" varsity refs with 1 veteran which would explain why you only complained about 2 of them...
  6. Bearden beat Sullivan South very soundly. According to one of South's players they still have 7 players out playing football, but he also said none of them are starters. Bearden appeared to be solid all the way around. They are very quick and have several players with decent size. I don't know how good the other teams in their district are but they definately will have a shot if they play like they did last night. I was actually impressed by Claibornes girls last night. They fought hard and the game was a lot closer than the score indicates. Claiborne is not the Caliber of South Greene or GHS even, but looked to have the potential to compete with WGHS, CDHS, and The Gap. Grainger looked pretty impressive when they beat Jefferson County last Tuesday in a Hall of Fame Game so here is my prediction for the season... 1 South Greene-The Rebels have a TON of talent returning and will give everyone on their schedule fits this season. I look for them to make another run at the State tourney this year and look more like the teams SGHS had is the late 80's/early 90's. 2 Greeneville- Welcome to the BRAC Lady Devils!!! Greeneville lost a lot from last year whether it be to graduation or injury or players quitting, but still have enough talent and experience to finish 2nd this season. The highlight of the year will be the games vs SGHS and due to the nature of the rivalry I believe they will both be great ballgames to watch, but with that being said...I don't see the Lady Devil's winning either of the games against the Lady Rebels this year. The rest of the BRAC games should be W's on their schedule tho. 3 Grainger- This is based only on what I have seen from the scrimmages and Hall of Fame Games thus far this year. The Lady Grizzlies appear to be improved from last season and will win some games this season from pure HUSTLE...we will get a better idea of how they match up after the Land-Air is over with. 4 I have the rest of the conference in a tie for 4th going into the season because from what I have seen so far none of them have stood out any more than the rest. It will be interesting to see how the season unfolds. GOOD LUCK to everyone! The first year of the BRAC looks to be a good one!
