  1. Lawrence Co shot terrible today (10 of 38 starting 4th quarter) plus the shot before half was way late even the S Hill fans sitting behind us said so and LC still should had a chance to win at the buzzer, When you dont play any competition all season it shows at tournament time...Clarksville will beat S Hill by 20 PLUS

How's that crow tasting? SH has NO seniors on its team. These girls will take the state title next year....bank it.

  2. I tend to take bad calls in stride....it's a subjective, thankless position to be in. But, I just witnessed the worst called match I have ever seen. The 120 Kaferle-Oliver match ended 3-2. Oliver took maybe 5 shots the whole match. Kaferle out shot him at least 3 to one. Oliver was clearly evading and the only stalling call was with 19 seconds left in the bout. There was a stalemate call when clearly Kaferle was taking control of Oliver's legs. When questioned, no evaluator was watching the match close enough to have an opinion. Any wrestler at any level deserves a competent referee. This was not the case in this situation. There were more instances of poor officiating but then there were great efforts by the officals to get in the proper position to make calls as well. Unfortunately, There were matches decided by poor calls instead of what the wrestlers brought to the mat.

Cheer up.....you could be from East TN and get dumped on by the officials all the time at the state tournaments. If your team is from the Chattanooga to Nashville area, you're ahead of the game. Overall the refs have done a good job this year at the individual tournament, but man o man, stalling and cautions were handed out in one weird manner. Same with takedowns......although it always seemed to favor the Chatt/Nash area teams. Just an observation.

  3. So the Schurlknight kid at 126 from Science Hill beats Taylor from Cleveland 13-1 at the state duals, but you see Taylor ahead of him. The Goldstein kid from Science Hill should be in the mix at 138 (top 3). He's been at 145 all season until last week for the duals. He should be in there near the end and has a chance to win it all.

  4. So with the team tournament over, let's get to the indidual tournament.

Here are my finals predictions without seeing all the teams in person:

106 - Boatman (Greeneville) vs. Hudgins (the Hill)

113 - Baker (South Doyle) vs. Morris (Happy Valley)

120 - Armstrong (Sullivan South) vs. Sutherland (the Hill)

126 - Schurlknight (the Hill) vs. Gobble (Sullivan South)

132 - Knowles (the Hill) vs. Carlson (Greeneville)

138 - Schurlknight (the Hill) vs. Williams (Seymour)

145 - Goldstein (the Hill) vs. McReynolds (Sullivan South)

152 - Perry (Sullivan East) vs. Vaughn (the Hill)

160 - Snyder (the Hill) vs. Rogers (Crockett)

170 - Brimer (Morristown West) vs. Stout (Dobyns Bennett) or Churchman (Jeff Co.)

182 - Begley (Dobyns Bennett) vs. Matthews (Morristown West)

195 - Shropshire (Boone) vs. Lowery (the Hill)

220 - Williams (Elizabethton) vs. Hayes (the Hill)

285 - McQuality (Sullivan East) vs. Johnson (Jeff Co.)

    Champions prediction:

    106 - Boatman

    113 - Baker

    120 - Armstrong

    126 - Schurlnight

    132 - Knowles

    138 - Williams

    145 - Goldstein

    152 - Vaughn

    160 - Snyder

    170 - Brimer

    182 - Begley

    195 - Shropshire

    220 - Hayes

    285 - Johnson

There are several weights I'm not confident in, but should be a good show come Friday. Good luck to all.

The Science Hill 170 lb has beaten the DB kid twice this year. I'd put him ahead of Stout. JMO

The others look in the ballpark.

  5. I don't get on here that much, but I would like to shed some light on this subject. I worked with UTC and was very involved with the State Tournament when it was held in Chattanooga. I also sit on the TACA committee for Wrestling and so I have a little knowledge about why and how this came to be in Franklin.

#1 The reason the tournament is no longer at UTC is due to their "Attitude" and their "Rude" behavior toward everyone involved and participating in the State Tournament.

It was way to hard to deal with the University, the people in charge of the Round House and last but not least the Campus Police.

#2 UTC never acted grateful to have brought students from all over the state onto their campus and as a matter of fact they could have cared less.

#3 Coaches and Fans were not treated with the respect they deserved and that is the bottom line.

#4 Chattanooga itself should have taken more pride in the fact that this wonderful event brought money into the city and should have taken a more active role in the success of

    and satisfaction of all involved.

#5 Local people worked themselves very hard to put this event on with no compensation, like Joe Blair and company do now.

#6 Basically what it all boils down to is Chattanooga is a wonderful place to enjoy wrestling, but they "Shot" themselves in the foot........so be it!

I personally like it in Franklin and I do enjoy not being right on top of each other and having room to breathe. It doesn't matter where it is held, people will always find fault and yet they are the very ones that have never even helped in putting something like that together and making it a success. This event only happens ONCE a year and all who are true loyal fans of the sport should come to this event regardless of where it is held.

Ditto what you said. UTC charged for concessions like you were at a pro football game. People were rude (like they didn't want to be working there, and by this, I mean you could tell it was the arena paid workers and not volunteer parents that seemed rude). You were so far away from the floor it was laughable. UTC is a closer drive for us, but I actually like the cow palace. Plenty of room, family friendly concession prices, and you can bring in a cooler. Parking is better too.

As for the duals, Clarksville people did a great job of being friendly and running a good tournament. That place was WAY TOO SMALL to be holding the state duals. No seating, people on top of each other, etc. Plus, unless you live in Nashville, it's a darn long way from everyone else. It simply had outgrown Clarkesville.

Anyway, the Ag center works for me I guess.

  6. Our backup 145 had a great tournament and senior season. He was 1 match from making the top 4 in the region and gave us great effort all weekend. We are proud of him and his willingness to step in and finish the tournament even though he was slightly injured on Friday night.

No doubt. I didn't mean for it to sound like a slam to the backup guy. SH has many backups that likely could have qualified. I just thought the missing kid was a little stronger wrestler and likely would have placed (if not won it). Hats off to the backup for a great effort. He can be proud.

  7. Bradley qualified all 14

    Cleveland had 13

    Soddy had 13

Any other teams have all 14, or at least 13?

Science Hill had 12....their 145 pounder could not wrestle due to injured knee at state duals......would have been 13

  8. I agree. They will be well prepared, but Blackman is out for a Big Finish to deliver on what they are capable of and to reward Coach Hamm for his personal blood sweat and tears! Thanks to all those that have stepped up to get them here and make ,a respectable showing! Thanks to Shadowens for stepping in after years of only football and no wrestling experience since HS @ Smyrna & to Shawn Jones for sharing your superior mat skills and philosophy to win!!!!! Great Parents & others behind this program is what holds it together. The future may be uncertain, but we have great hope all things will work out for good in the long run!

IMHO... This Tournament and the ones following will give something wrestlers, coaches, admin, parents & fans & Rutherford Co. Can Be Proud of!!!!

    The Soms

Hey, many teams come to the state duals with the intent of knocking Science Hill out. It's funny, if wrestling stops near the middle of the state, then why does Science Hill keep coming in 3rd or 4th at the state duals? I'm glad Blackman has something for motivation now................they will need it.

  9. Well maybe I used the wrong term? Im not talking about riding

a lead out. How about when they are behind and lay flat on the mat in

hopes of not getting pinned by another wrestler in a dual match? Or

wrestling on the line to get a break and prevent the takedown/pin. I know

coaches instruct their wrestlers about what happens in a dual match when

they get pinned. (Giving up 6 instead of 3) Sorry if I ruffled any feathers.

Feathers not ruffled at all. I see many teams wrestle on the line, and it appears they are coached to do that, it drives me crazy. SH is not one of those teams. As for laying flat and trying not to get pinned, I would hope every wrestler in the world tries not to get pinned in any match. Giving up 3 in a dual is better than giving up 6. Most would agree on this.

  10. First of all, I want to be clear and concise with this message (as I am emotionally involved in it).

The fact that Kenneth Hammonds (aka Hamm) was released by Rutherford County Schools as a VOLUNTEER is an indictment on our education system as a whole. Too often administrators bow down to the politically correct and use a Cover Your (Butt) mentality and don't take one SECOND to realize the effect(s) their decisions will have on the very students they are "protecting."

I have known Ken personally for the last 4 years and have spoken with him, been in a wrestling room with him, or interacted with him on "social media" for just about everyday of that 4-year period. The fact that anyone would deem him as a MENACE TO SOCIETY or harmful to these young, impressionable youth is SO UNBELIEVABLY FALSE and FARTHEST FROM THE TRUTH, i can barely wrap my mind around it.

We have all learned a valuable lesson from all of this:

You are not allowed to make a mistake. Please tell your children in order to become a successful mentor and to volunteer thousands of hours of your own time that you must be PERFECT.

Was Ken in the wrong on this? Unfortunately from the way it was handled/reported, the school had "no choice" but to do what they did...but here's another life lesson for your kids:

If you make a mistake, by all means don't be honorable and own up to it and say "I made a mistake, I will fix it immediately..." Owning up to your faults is WRONG.

If Ken had been a teacher he would have been able to hire a lawyer and go through a review process...but see we VOLUNTEERS aren't afforded that fundamental right. YOU ARE GUILTY until proven innocent, and at that point, it is too late for the kids, who are the REAL victims in all of this.

    Here are the simple facts:

Those responsible for molding this wrestling program and literally hundreds of kids in the recent past have been forcibly removed from mentoring in a positive manner. The situation with Coach Kennedy and Coach Hammonds is beyond ridiculous and has made me physically sick and emotionally scarred.

Furthermore, I am attempting to be approved by the state/county to step in and help out the team for the remainder of the season as this vaccuum will undoubtedly effect many of the Seniors and Juniors that have a REAL shot at state placment. Although if any administrator reads this, they will undoubtedly conclude that I am unfit to volunteer as my knowledge of RIGHT/WRONG is so clouded.

    Coach Knepper

    (931) 222-7213

I don't know this guy, but I know how our society (especially school boards) take the chicken sh!t politically correct approach to everything. They'll let a thug stay in a classroom as a student, and kick out the kid who forgot he had a tylenol in his pocket from just getting over the flu on a weekend. I'll bet the coach's facebook was much more tame than most of the students' facebook pages you see out there. Alas, that's why I don't do facebook. I'm sorry to hear what happened to your friend and coach. Sounds like a raw deal for that volunteer coach. I watch teenagers talk like drunken sailors around adults these days, but I'm afraid to say "darn" around a teenager for fear of getting in "trouble." My how times have changed.

  11. It would be an upset! I think SH takes this

one. They may stall, but I think they will come

    out on top.

"May stall"????? One thing you'll never see from a SH team is stalling. (Sometimes a little stalling would be recommended IMO, but they are coached to wrestle). I've seen kids that had a 3 or 4 pt lead, should have rode out the last 30 seconds, but wrestled on and got caught).

  12. I would not put The Hill that high, especially since they got a whoopin from a team that didn't even make it to state duals, Franklin, at Cleveland duals.

    PRT iii :flower:

I guess the good news is, unlike college football, the matches will get settled on the mat and not by a bunch of people in a poll (or on a message board).

  13. I think the true number one team in Tennessee is between Baylor, Cleveland, Bradley, and Soddy. All teams are very talented from top to bottom. I think the bros lost to Cleveland at Cleveland duals but that was earlier in the year and I for one do believe that it would be a whole lot closer now. And Soddy has wins over Bradley and Cleveland this year. In the dual Soddy vs Bradley, Soddy bumped weights, and I do believe that when they face again that Bradley would in fact bump weights with them and would eventually win the dual because of it. If I had to choose between these four teams I would choose Baylor, but you never know. Here is my top 10 poll:

    1.Baylor

    2.Bradley

    3.Soddy Daisy

    4.Cleveland

    5.Christian Brothers

    6.Father Ryan

    7.McCallie

    8.Independence

    9.Franklin

    10.Ravenwood

OTW: Clarksville, Blackman, Science Hill, Brentwood, Brentwood Academy.

I think Science Hill drops in around 8th. I know everyone in the middle of the state thinks wrestling stops at the Knoxville line................but Science Hill is the cream of the crop (as a whole team) in East TN past Chattanooga. They finished 3rd last year and this year's team looks equally as strong. (They would have finished second but Cleveland got the seeding SH should have had). The state duals should be interesting this year.

  14. Now I would bet it would not be a 81-0. May still be a blow out score but not to the predictions that you have projected.

It really doesn't matter at this point. I know I'll be a big Jeff County fan down at the state duals. I've always been proud of how the Region 1 teams support each other at the state duals and individual championships. SH and JC should represent well. I thought JC had a good group of young men who represent a great sport in the proper manner.

  15. The match with Jefferson Co. did not include several varisty matches that would have took place in a normal dual match. There was many JV kids thrown in and some forfeits which made the score not realistic. Both teams had a few kids banged up from previous matches and rested in spots when possible.

103 Hudgins (Hill) over Molinar (Jeff) Fall 2:42

112 Sutherland (Hill) over Wilmouth (Jeff) Fall 1:27

119 M.Vaughn (Hill) over Shannon (Jeff) Fall 1:59

125 Bagley (Hill) over Jones (Jeff) Fall 4:44

130 Schurlknight (Hill) over Posey (Jeff) Fall :43

135 Damman (Hill) over Evon (Jeff) Dec 17-15

    140 Vaughan (Hill)over Greer (Jeff) Fall 1:29

145 Stroud (Hill) over Webb (Jeff) Fall :40

152 Riley (Hill) over Churchman (Jeff) Fall 4:42

160 Johnson (Jeff) over Fullbright (Hill) Dec 10-6

    171 Bradley (Jeff) Forfeit

189 Lowery (Hill) over Carter (Jeff) Fall 1:32

    215 Lyon (Hill) Forfeit

    285 Brittain (Hill) Forfeit

    Hill 69

    Jeff 9

I think what matcat is trying to say in a nice/respectful way was this..............if SH and JC lined up in a normal dual match, and each team wrestled their starters, the final score would be SH 78 JC 3 (without a doubt). It could possibly be 81-0 (because Fulbright for SH at 160 gave the JC kid a tough match).

You can sugar coat this all you want, but there is no one in region 1 even close to SH.

In the JV division, you have a mistake. Sam Arms from Science Hill took first at 168 lbs. He pinned the kid from Karns in about 30 seconds.

  17. Looking at the lopsided victory Science Hill had against the C made me wonder how good Science Hill is. Looking at their results from their tournament this weekend I see that the highest finisher they had was one 3rd place. Centrals defeat to them looks a whole lot worse and really magnifies the C's lack of quality opponents

I know nothing about Central's program, so I can't comment on that. As an overall team, SH is strong top to bottom. Central losing to them speaks more about SH. I think you need to look at the competition at the Fandetti Brawl (plus Soddy and Parkland (NC) had to back out b/c of weather/travel issues). Can you imagine this tournament with those two in it as well. SH should be applauded for not having a tournament where they invite one tough team, and a couple of decent teams (along with a field of patsy's) so they can win their own tournament. Plus, SH is missing two state caliber wrestlers right now with another just coming back from knee surgery.

Central's loss to SH is more a reflection of the Hill's strength than Central's lack of it I would assume.

  18. According to many of the parents from many of the schools there (including the ones who have traveled to Hawaii and MN for tournaments), the Fandetti is by far the best tournament they have ever attended.

    Some quotes:

"runs the smoothest of any tournament I've ever seen"

    "awesome facility"

"plenty of room and every seat has a great view" (loved the fact that no one was allowed to be in the middle area where all 6 mats meet so they can see every mat without moving around)

"blown away by the food offered at the concessions - not your typical tourney or high school food"

"no wonder teams line up to try and get into this tournament"

"thank you for making us feel so welcome and not like you just want our checkbook at the tournament"

"this is the best wrestling competition top to bottom of any tournament we've ever been to"

The list goes on............but this is by far the premier tournament in the southeast. Everyone who gets a chance should attend if they ever get a chance.

  19. Greeneville Invitational Tournament(GIT)... rated as one of the toughest one day tournaments in the south... teams expected to come(not a complete list, just going by who came last year) This is on January 8th

    Baylor

    Science Hill

    Dobyns-Bennett

    Morristown East

    Greeneville

    Jefferson Co.

    Chuckey-Doak

    West Greene

    Sevier Co.

    Virginia High, Va

    Daniel Boone

    Woodford Co, KY

    Knox Gibbs

    Sullivan East

    Franklin Road Academy

    Knox Bearden

    Knox Farragut

    Marion High, Va

again, this is not an official list.. the Father Ryan Invitational is the same weekend so some teams might switch up their schedule..

"one of the toughest one day tournaments in the south"..........you're kidding, right? Take out Baylor and Science Hill and you couldn't even field a good team if you took the best wrestler off each team left. The GIT used to be a tough/good tournament, but now it's simply "a high school wrestling tournament." Come over to the Fandetti Brawl if you want to see one of the toughest tournaments in the south.

  20. Chatt Central definitely has a good team this year. Will the Purple Pounders be the team to beat this season?

I may be mistaken here, but didn't Central wrestle Science Hill recently and get their butt's handed to them? If I'm wrong, I apologize. I believe it was at the Alcoa Duals.

  21. I think what everyone is trying to say is that, for a kid as highly touted as D-No, there is no acceptable reason he should pitch only 3 innings in the state tournament. Even if he threw a complete game the Monday before and pitched against Halls, a player of his caliber should be going the distance on the mound game one of the tournament. I think D-No's legacy is unfortunately hurt by his showing at the tournament, or the visible lack there of. All the people who love to argue the Pfeifer/Norris debate should now see who the premier pitcher is in TN. 15 IP, 25 K's, 0 ER, 6 BB, 7 H's. Those are Pfeifer's numbers from the tournament, and he is the only pitcher in the history of the state who is 3-0 in state title games. Both are tremendous pitchers, but D-No's lack of innings and facing quality opponents is what puts him behind Pfeifer in my book.

Hey, I agree with you there. I knew nothing about how SH did until the day after they were eliminated. After they lost the first game, I asked if Daniel pitched and was told no. My first thought, and trust me I have no axe to grind with their coach because I don't even know his name, was why would you not use your ace in the first game to stay in the winner's bracket? I was told SH was up 7-2 and then starting making a ton of errors and lost. It appeared the coach rolled the dice to get D-No to the second game and it backfired.

Then, I heard about the game where Daniel pitched something like 1 2/3 innings, then was pulled, and came back in for an inning or two. Bottom line, it appears their ace pitcher only pitched 2 or 3 innings at the state tournament. I laughingly said that was the most ridiculous thing I think I've ever heard for a coach to get in a situation where you're eliminated in 3 games and your stud pitched 3 innings. I do blame the coach, but it has nothing to do with Daniel's talent or stature in TN HS baseball.

Slacker is appropriately screen named :thumb:

  22. Hey Coach. BTW, I know you are the wrestling coach for SHHS who verbally attacks kids from other teams and tries to start stuff from your dugout. You are a joke and embarrassment to your own players who know you know nothing about baseball, they just let you hang out.

I have said nothing about Daniel not being a great player. I just do not think Edwards is a good coach. I'm not a fan of the advisors that Daniel has and the impact they have on the team, Daniel, and Edwards. Yes, Daniel has some things that need to be fixed and I believe the EC Yankees coaches will fix them. I'm also confident Daniel would tell you the same thing. He has been very inconsistent in his pitching the last several weeks. He got pulled against Daniel Boone because of too many walks and getting hit by one of the lower teams in the conference. It seemed that when his buddy, Kevin, hit him in the first inning that it seemed to take something out of him. He also had too many walks in the conference tournament. At one point he had 9 k's and 7 walks and 2 hit by pitches. EC will help him get his motion back consistent.

You are just trying to take care of your boss who is getting a lot of heat for making some very questionable calls this year. He has depended on Jeff for the past couple years and now there is no one to help him make those tough calls, except two advisors.

First off, for Slacker, I am neither a coach nor teacher at SH. You just lost your credibility there. Let's say DN is not the #1 pitcher or prospect in the nation for a minute. It's not an exact science to begin with. It's not like he's wild or something..........many of his walks are due to trying to hit the corner and kids laying off of the pitches because they can't hit him with regularity to begin with. The best in the pros get hit, so why would any HS pitcher be any different? What team wouldn't benefit from having someone like Jeff Reed as a coach.............so you have no point there.

If you think someone is being protected, then there's no use trying to convince you different. DN is a GREAT pitcher and prospect. He needs no protection. Just ask Halls.
