  6. Here is an article from the DNJ regarding Zach Kirsch, a senior on LaVergne's Baseball Team. Zach lost his home due to a fire this weekend. This comes a year after losing his father. He is a great kid and has a great family who are very active in the community. If you are interested in helping him and his mother, the contact information is at the end of the article. Yesterday was the first day of practice for TSSAA high school spring sports across the state. Baseballs and softball were thrown around ball diamonds on a beautiful February afternoon. Soccer balls were kicked. Tennis balls were hit. At La Vergne High, that was no different. However, the Wolverines' baseball team also had a crash-course on team togetherness this weekend. The team's senior catcher Zach Kirsch and his mother Tricia lost the La Vergne house they were renting to an electrical fire. Everything was lost — from Zach's team gear to the family pet cat. Everything may be difficult to replace, but those in the La Vergne area are trying to replace what they can. "Zach is a part of the La Vergne baseball team," said Carla Lyons, a parent and member of the team's booster club. Lyons got the call at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday about the fire. No one was at home when the fire occurred. Zach was working and Tricia was at a birthday party, Lyons said. The La Vergne High baseball family quickly went to work, getting items donated — from clothing to furniture to monetary help. The La Vergne community has also stepped forward, helping the family. "You know, we've got a good community out here," La Vergne coach Steve Williams said. "Within 24 hours of when we got the call they had a place to live. We got them furniture and the booster club raised about $1,500 in three hours. "The support has been overwhelming." It's been a rough year for the family. Tricia's husband — Zach's father — died just over a year ago. However, on Monday the baseball program and La Vergne community showed the Kirschs that they have a family here in La Vergne — a big one. "It's bee wonderful how our baseball group has stepped up as well as others," Lyons said. "We've all stepped up. We're a big family here at La Vergne." Monday was a day for fundamentals at ballfields across the state. And that was no different than at La Vergne High. However, here they also had a crash-course of life and that there is more to it than baseball. That's much more important than any hitting or fielding drill they will do on the field. Anyone wanting to make a donation to help the Kirsch family can contact Lyons at 615-260-5825.
  7. I believe LaVergne is playing Dickson Co and Coffee Co today, not Beech.
  8. David, LaVergne has it on their schedule they only play Upperman tonight at 6:30. Not Hendersonville or Brentwood.
  9. Coach Stevens met with the players and parents last night. I believe we were all impressed and excited about the up-coming season. It looks like he is keeping a few coaches and looking for some new ones to bring in. He spoke very respectful of Oak Ridge, Austin East, and Coach Hester. He discussed a lot about instilling discipline and building a program, not just a team. GO RINES!
  10. Congratulations to Eagle and kudos for not picking your weightclass correctly or we would have to do a Pete Rose investigation. And to Bayoubear, are we charging for parking?
  11. Awesome. Look out District 7, at least one of you are going down this year.

  13. Speaking of instilling discipline, if pulling a knife doesn't make a kid act right I don't know what will. I agree with grizz, hopefully if he made mistakes then he has learned from them. I would hate for him to be run out of town before he gets here. It doesn't sound like Oak Ridge was too pleased with him, but maybe it just wasn't a good fit. Look at Kiffin. So far they love him at USC.
  14. They've been in the spread, but they lost their top 3 WRs and not sure what's going on with the QB. They do have several good running backs but not sure what the O-line will look like this year. I do think the defense will be much better this year since they retained some key guys, but they should move Steele back to MLB. He was a monster as a freshman there.
  15. "There has been slaves all through-out history (black, white, asian, hispanic, female, male). But here in the North America, its just black I guess." I must have misinterpreted this as saying since we have all known what it is like to be slaves that we are all on a level playing field. And my reference to 1863 was when slavery was emancipated and some people assume that means African Americans have had equal opportunities since then. Some people think that the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's was so long ago and don't seem to understand there could be lingering effects that still last today. Do you remember when schools were desegregated? If you do, or your parents do, then it was not that long ago. Don't get me wrong, things are much better now than they ever have been which can be attributed to the Ole Boy generation fading out and the younger generations learning to think for themselves. This is getting way too deep for a high school football message board and I have a feeling that no matter what I say I will not change your mind so I will try once again to divert the subject back on LHS football. Wing T versus the spread. Will the new coach make a change?
  16. Wow FBBum, I never thought of it that way. I guess we have all been equal since 1863. Thanks for the lesson. Now can you tell us who will be the next coach?
  17. It would be nice to steal Riverdales' OC so LHS could instill the wing t. They will have a good corp of RB's plus maybe he can teach them how to stop it.
  18. I suggest when you look up indentured servants you also look up the definition of bigot. I believe you are getting it confused with racist. Not to get off subject, but any new word on who the head coach of LHS will be? Do you think who ever it will be will continue to run the spread being that they may loose their QB and best WRs?
  19. I've been an avid reader of CoachT for years, but this is first time I have ever felt the need to post. In response to Lost Old Dad's ignorant comments regarding indentured servants and President Obama, what does your bigoted comments have to do with who will be the next coach at LHS. Keep that nonsense to a different forum. If you are the history guru you claim to be, then you should know the difference between a white indentured servant and a black slave and we are on here to talk football, not politics so leave Obama out of it. So to get back on subject, Coach Hester is a nice guy and would make a good offensive coordinator, but could benefit working under a more experienced coach for a few years to learn how to teach discipline before taking on head coaching duties again. Coach Thompson would have been a good fit. Mr. Ash is a good principal will do a fine job. And we need to keep Landon and his dad for one more year. Go Rines
