  1. GC Pioneer, so you are predicting Bolivar to knock out both Obion County and Westview to get to the Region Finals. If Bolivar wins tomm. night, they will play Obion County, which is 13 AA 4 seed. And Westview is 13 AA 2 seed so they will play Bolivar and you predict Bolivar. I will take Westview and haven't seen Bolivar play, but looking at their schedule and who they have beat and who has beat them and the amount of close wins is not that impressive. Westview lost to Covington Sat. Night but had a chance to put them away and missed the front end of a one and one in OT. Westview is playing could ball right now and I have them making it to Murfreesboro and making some noise. I will take Covington as well. 2 very good teams that are tall and athletic. It wouldn't suprise me to see Bolivar beat Obion. Obion's team is the most underperforming team I have ever see. They are a good offensive team that is not a great outside shooting team but get lots of good looks because of Goodwin's down low game. They don't play defense but I will be shocked to see Westview go down.

  2. GC Pioneer, you said Bolivar is the best team in the Region. They did beat Obion early in the year, but Westview beat them 61-27. And I did know they lost to Liberty not to long ago. I have been to Dyersburg both nights and Westview and Covington both are going to be tough outs for anybody as well as Obion and Dyersburg. 13AA has 4 very good teams with several players that will play college ball. Has Bolivar improved that much?

  3. Two more great games in 13AA. I agree with you GC Pioneer. Westview lost by 1 tonight in OT, but I believe they make some noise in the Boro this year. Dyersburg is playing really good right now and I think if I had to play Obion or Dyersburg right now I would choose Obion. They miss Macy Wright in a bad way especially from three point land. Also, looks like Obion possibly may have to go to Bolivar in the 1st round of the region where they lost earlier this year. Obion goes through the motion on defense like they did in the last two they might not make it past Round 1.

  4. The most talented team won the game. Gibson County didn't help matters by turning the ball over numerous times and getting beat badly on the boards. Gibson County players were very nervous to a team they just beat by 13 at home a couple of weeks ago. Good luck to Dyersburg, who brought their A game in the 2nd half. Gibson County missed 7 of 8 FT's in the first half and had several TO's in the first half.

  5. Congratulations to State Champion: Christ Presbyterian Academy and all of the other 7 teams to make it to the Boro this year. My question is: Who makes it back next year, if any of them? What team's 2011/2012 season showed that they have potential to get there next year even if they didn't this year?

I don't know about basketball across the state like some of the other members on here, but I do know a little. Primarily knowing about McMinn Central, I would say that they will most certainly be back next year and should be a favorite to win it all. With AA Miss Basketball Elizabeth Masengil returning, Freshmen Elizabeth Trentham, Kelcey Myers, and Ally Coleman rising up this year, defensive power (and another threat from beyond the arc as seen from the Obion game) Kelcey Young, the dynamic sister duo of Sidni and Peyton Williams, and a slew of incoming 8th graders (Coach Young's youngest daughter is said to be very impressive; there's also a girl from little Rural Vale Middle in Tellico which just won a national tournament coming to Central), I find it hard to think that Central would see any reason not to bring home the Gold Ball next year.

Obion Central is only losing one senior, so I consider them a threat as well. I would rather see them in the championship as opposed to the first round like this year though ;)What is the word on Livingston Academy for next year? Who are they losing/keeping? Same with Upperman and Cannon from that district? Memphis teams? Upper East Tennessee? Anything else from Middle Tennessee?

If I had to make a choice of three teams that had a good chance to win it all, I would go with Obion, McMinn Central and CPA. Sounds like CPA has their top three scorers back, which is a plus, Obion is losing Macy Wright, which is not good but is all they lose. McMinn has most of theirs coming back. I would bet now that two of these three teams will run into each other in Murfreesboro.

  6. This was very good summation of the game. I looked up the stats and CPA had a 20-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. I would add that when it become obvious that CPA had taken away Goodman with the aggressive double teams the Rebels appeared very hesitant to let the three ball fly. Then came the complete cave in at the free throw line with 10 misses in the second half alone. Two really good teams but there can only be one winner.

I have seen that side of Obion come out in recent years in the Region-semis. Didn't think that would happen this year. They are a good three point shooting team. Don't know why their team especially Macy Wright wasn't letting them fly. Sounds like to me their nerves got the best of them on the big stage. 15 missed FT's. Just think if they would have hit 5 or 6 of them that tie score with 4 minutes left probably would have been a lead for Obion. Obion fans I bet are sick, letting the Gold Ball slip away. They had a good year and nothing to be ashamed of, but sounds like they had a nail in early and let it get away. 11 point lead and CPA in all that foul trouble. Never would have dreamed all these scenarios and Obion lose. I know CPA had a good team, but this one will sting Obion for a long time. Gold Balls are hard to come by. They are losing Macy, but I don't think they are losing that much. I will be suprised if they don't go a long way next year.

  7. First of all, I would like to congratulate the CPA fans on winning the title. I was out of town and only seen parts of the first half on TV. I thought everything was favoring Obion. CPA looked to be in foul trouble early and Obion looked to be in pretty good shape at half. I thought Obion had a few careless turnovers in the first half, but could someone fill me in on what changed in the second half. Did Obion turn the ball over? Could they not get the ball to Brandi? Did they lose their cool? I was told by another GC fan that watched the game that said that Obion got out hustled and wasn't playing with the same intensity as CPA in the second half. I know CPA was a good team and I had them in the finals with Obion to win. They had a young bunch in 2010 that give us all we wanted in the first round.

  8. Do people not understand that defense is huge in girl's basketball? These teams do NOT match up well. Stone will set the pace of this game. Stone beat Waverly because they took what Waverly does best (set a composed pace)and up it. I still think they lose, but will be a single digit margin.

I agree with you to some extent. Stone Memorial really looked well coached and played really solid defense. But, Obion can play good defense as well. They shut down Massengil and frustrated her all day. I think that this will be a low scoring affair and will be a game for one half. I just don't know where Stone Memorial will get their offense. They may slow them down, but Obion and Waverly is not even a comparison. I don't know how Waverly beat Macon County. Waverly must have brought in their own officials. Obion 45 Sone Memorial 28

  9. I didn't have the opportunity to go to the girls state tournament, however, I did listen to a few of the games through the tssaa website. I have been following the Central Chargerette team for the past few years, especially, Elizabeth Masingale. Through all of my research, I have come to be impressed with their freshman girls.

Kelsey Myers has been a standout from the beginning of the season. She is an incredible player on offense and dfgense. She can jump and shoot. I agree with the commentator for the state tournament game, she is and will be a force to be watching. I know her team was missing her during their game since she has been injured. I have also been impressed with the growth of Elizabeth Ham and Alley Coleman. These freshman girls will be a great help to the success of this team in the next few years. Big expectations for this Chargerette team!

I believe this is the tallest McMinn team I have ever seen. And there was one taller on the injured reserve?

  10. Lol, you guys crack me up! Was a great game & if OC wins the championship by a larger margin than they did yesterday I will come on here and say yall were right on! But if OC doesnt win the gold ball, are yall going to admit this thread and everyone on it was wrong? Everyone would like to think the team that beat them wins the gold ball so they can complain about the draw and argue they are the 2nd best team.

I started the thread and I am a Gibson County Fan. I am a neutral party. If OC gets beat, I will admit I was wrong. This is not putting CPA or LA down. They are both good teams. I was more impressed with McMinn Central than I was the others yesterday. I have seen Obion walk through Gibson County, Covington, Dyersburg, and Martin Westview, all teams that would be very competitive in Murfreesboro, all year.

  11. pioneer, I'm curious as to who you are...? I can tell you know what you're talking about. There's only a few people that I can think of that are die hard Gibson fans that also know basketball state wide.

I am Ken Shaver. I live in Franklin, TN, but I was born in Gibson, TN. I have followed Gibson County basketball from the 80's all the way until now. My parents and I have a sub-division in Medina, TN called Hale Estates, so I spend alot of time there, not just to work, but follow Gibson County around. I usually go to the games with Bubba Witt and we usually set around Amy Santinello and Johnny and Jane McCurdy. I have been following them religiously mostly big games and all the District, Region and State. I follow AA across the state. I don't get to see a lot of statewide games, but I really keep an eye on the top 15 or 20 teams. I got to know Johnny Morgan and Massengil's dad pretty well in 2010 at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro. I talked to Johnny yesterday as they were walking in and have talked to him several times. Really nice people. But, my number is 731-343-5660. Give me a call sometime. I don't quite know who you are either, but I know you keep up with AA more than I do.

  12. I wouldnt say that look at Stone there still playing. I would have never thought that they would have beat Waverley who knocked off Macon to get there. At the same time Manassas was susposed to be the elite team to beat and got hammered today. Anythings possiable this time of the season thats why they play. Im going to bed my spelling just keeps getting worse.

Your right. Anything can happen. LA has been there many times and just like McMinn will keep getting to the Boro. Don't think Stone Memorial will have enough offense to beat Obion and LA has to play better than they did today to beat CPA. Good luck.

  13. Either you cant read post or just plain dumb. I WAS NOT commenting on the game!!!And even cleared it up in the post after that about being tired. And sure wasnt crowing if thats even a word. I had no interest in that game what so ever was just simply waiting on the great game that happened after that one. But the Stone/Waverly was a good defensive battle. Trust me playing in the district we do ive seen plenty of games like that. Now I must change my title prediction bc McMinn Central is out. So now ill go with LA over Obidon (sp?) by 7.

Nothing against Livingston Academy. They have been tough for years, but I don't know if you guys match up that well with CPA. Going to be a tough game. And for the record, I am a Gibson County fan, but Obion got played as close as they will get played today by McMinn. Goodman and Wright were both in major foul trouble the whole second half and they won by nine. They also missed about 20 free throws. They ain't getting beat. Too much talent. Showed that today.

  14. This game is a battle. Obion has done a good job against Massengil but they can't hit their free throws. The winner of this will be playing on Saturday.

Looks like Obion's gameplan was that Massengill was not going to beat them. Shannon Wiggins of Obion might be the unsung hero of this team. She didn't give Massengill any room to breath today. And she makes clutch shots in the most opportune times. McMinn Central is going to be around for a while. I don't know where they get all these players and they are freshman. Sidni Williams and Kelsey Young really showed a lot of heart today. Obion could not put them away. I never thought McMinn would have kept this game that close with Massengill being shut down like she was. Congrats too Coach Morgan and McMinn Central on a good season. I think we actually got to see a championship game three days early.

  15. McMinn and Obion was really a war today. Reminded me of the state championship game in 2010 when we played McMinn Central. I watched all the games today and CPA looked pretty good, but this might have been the state championship game. I knew that Coach Morgan and Co. would give Obion all they wanted. The only reason I picked Obion is because they had too many upperclassman that was a top five team in recent years that hadn't made it. I knew McMinn lost Jenna Adams last year and a couple of more, but these two teams hopefully next year will be in opposite brackets. Congratulations to both teams on the best game of the day. McMinn Central fans, don't you dare hold your heads down. I think you guys are the number 1 program in the state year in and year out. I don't know where you guys get these girls and they're freshman. Really scary. Thought Shannon Wiggins really won the game for Obion with her stellar defense on Massengill. They took McMinn's down low game away and forced McMinn to beat them outside and they almost did. Good luck Obion and congratulations to McMinn on a great run. You guys will be around for a while.

  16. Oh and I might as well make a prediction while I'm at it. It will be a tough game for both teams. I expect another physical game, but the refs will get in the way. They always do. This one is a coin toss, and............ its heads so I'll take CHS by 1.

This team has overachieved, as they are really a year away from being a state title team. I consider it a victory just getting to the elite 8. Coach Morgan and Young have done an excellent job getting this team to the state. Proud to be a Charger.

    Good luck Chargerettes!

For the record, Obion lost in Florida at a Christmas tournament and they lost the last game of the season to Covington, in which their was a bad virus among the team and wasn't playing with all their starters from what I have heard from an Obion fan. I have watched Obion play for years and they can get rattled. I seen McMinn get beat by Livingston Academy in 2010 in the state and I think McMinn would have beat them 8 out of 10 times that year. Any thing can happen in Murfreesboro. It is a different stage. For McMinn to win this game, they have to not turn the ball over and make them turn the ball over. They have to keep Masengill out of foul trouble. This will be a war down low. They beat us by 4 early in the year and we played a full court press alot in the first half and created some turnovers. We lost one game in 2009 and 2010 and this team is the bunch that beat us. Our Heather Butler is in the top 6 in the NCAA in scoring this year and just won the OVC tournament MVP. So, take it from a team that plays them a lot. They are loaded. But, I know McMinn and Coach Morgan have done their homework and will not go quietly. In my eyes, the winner of this game will be in the finals. Good luck to both teams. I will be there tommorrow to watch the games. I am nervous and we are not in

    it.

  17. It's good to see how basketball can develop and redevelop bonds with family and friends. Looks like your passion for Central is what mine has been for years with Gibson County. Good luck to McMinn Central. I think if they are going to win they have to come out strong and give them a punch early. Sometimes a hard early punch can make a team kinda lose their composure especially in the Boro. McMinn is a whole lot more accustomed to playing in the state. We came up to Murfreesboro for years and got rattled until we got Heather Butler.

  18. First of all I want to say Congratulations girls! My grandaughter and I have been to most of your games and if not, then we have kept up with you all via radio, internet, and newspaper. I was unable to attend Saturday night because of keeping my other grandkids. However, my grandaughter went with a friend and she called me the instant she got home screaming with excitement. She showed an interest in central ball after attending a state game last year with a friend and wanted to begin attending games. She and I began going together to games this school year and it has bonded us in so many ways. We began becoming familiar with the players and she became an instant fan! I forgot how exciting central ball can be after all of these years, but am a big fan again. We have even began a scrap book with pictures of us at games and newspaper clippings of the team. Thanks to you girls, I am now the favorite grandmother!

We are cheering on Masingale for Miss Basketball! My grandaughter loves Casteel and Coleman. She always talks about how pretty they are (how cute is that). The Willams girls (we keep getting them confused because they look so much alike)are gonna be a big help at state. I personally love to watch Young as she plays hard consistently. My grandaughter loves when Morrow is on a roll with her 3's! My grandaughter told me she is not sure if Myers will get to play at state because she got hurt during game. If not, she will definetely be missed! I know Trentam will knock that ball from those girls. My grandaughter loves when she does that. I hope Pirkel(not sure how spelled) and Truelove get a chance to experience the court at state. They are a joy to watch as well!

Well, girls thanks again for reminding me how much fun Central ball can be and especially for my increasingly close relationship with my oldest grandaughter. I will be unable to attend state due to watching my younger grandkids while their parents work. My grandaughter, however, is trying to talk her dad into going if you all play Friday. And, hopefully, if you all play Saturday, I WILL BE BRINGING HER MYSELF!

    Go Chargerettes!

  19. CPA has 4 strong guards and two strong post players. They may have to play the 4 guards most of the time if Manassas is going to press. I am not certain how well CPA will handle that.

Going to be a very well balanced state tournament. CPA give us all we wanted in 2010. I am going with CPA and Obion in the finals and I am taking Obion to win it. I think they will come up here on a mission. Most of this bunch were on the team when GC won it in 2009 and 2010 and seemed this year to have been tired of being a spectator come tourney time. My sleeper team is McMinn Central. I feel like next year will be there year. I just feel like they are a year away, but with Coach Morgan you can't never tell. They seem to reload better than any team in the state.

  20. Massengil is going to have her hands full with Goodman... If Wright and Goodman can stay out of foul trouble I say OC by 15+....If one of these two have to sit for a significant amount of time itll be a close one.

Don't forget Goodman is going to have her hands full as well. I did pick Obion, just because I think they have lost less and have lots of talent. But, Adams and Masengill both got in big time foul trouble against a good Cannon County team last year and still won. I think if Massengill gets in foul trouble this year they will be in trouble. If she don't and Goodman does it's game on. I think Macy Wright is going to get guarded like never before and if McMinn can get a few threes from whoever and get Goodman in foul trouble they have a good shot. Obion beat us by 4 at Gibson County early in the year before Amber Reah got hurt and we were up by 9 at halftime. We pressed pretty much the whole first half. That's how we got the lead. Obion adjusted at half and played much better the second half and won. But, whoever gets in foul trouble early will be at a disadvantage. I feel whoever wins this game will play in the finals.

  21. Wow. Talk about a matchup right off the bat. I was hoping to see this one later in the tournament. My prediction is Obion. The reason I am picking Obion is this same bunch beat us (Gibson County) in 2010 and gave us our only

loss in two years. They have lost very little from that team. They are loaded. I don't think McMinn Central is as talented this year as they were last. Can't be after losing Jenna. She ate our lunch in 2010. Know they have lost more this year than they have in probably three years combined. But, it wouldn't suprise me either to see McMinn Central win and here's why. Coaching and Boro experience will be on their side. The center for Obion is going to have to contend with Masengill all day and could get in foul trouble. Morgan always puts a lot of pressure on and always plays great defense. I do imagine Maci Wright will have to earn her points. It looks like McMinn Central has really gotten better since the year has gone on. It's going to be a war either way. Good luck to both schools. I will definitely be there for this one.

  22. Just saw where Macon Co. lost their Region Championship game to CPA, and noticed that CPA is 32-3. I haven't been paying attention to state rankings most of the year but could CPA be the "sleeper" in this AA group?

As far as Region 4AA getting both of their teams into state, yes, it's possible. I don't think LA will have much trouble from East Hamilton, but Grundy will have to play a great game to win at the Round House.

We, Gibson County, played CPA in the first round of the 2010 state tournament. They were very young then. They were very tall, rebounded well, and played good defense and played a good half court offense. They affected our post play as did you guys that year. We beat them by 18 or 20, but it was a 4 point game with 4 or 5 minutes in the 4th. They also just beat Macon by 10 or 11, which is strong down low. They are going to be very tough if they make it out of the sub-state. Obion is going to be very tough as well. They have one of the best guard/low post combos in the state. Their center is 6 foot 3 and is a beast down low.
