  2. Last year the district was very competitive. Creek Wood won the district title and 9-1, Camden Central also went 9-1 and they eventually advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs, Harpeth earned a trip to the playoffs and got to the second round, Stewart County won 6 games and made their third consecutive trip to the postseason, and Waverly Central won 4 contests and fell just 1 win shy of possibly making the state playoffs as a "wild card". All in all it was a very good year for the district. How will 2010 shake out? Camden Central appears to be the preseason favorite. Will Creek Wood & Harpeth build off of the success they had last season? Will Stewart County continue to grow and improve as they have over the course of the last 3 years? Will Waverly Central build off of last season's late surge and be a suprise team to watch out for in the district this season? Will Cheatham County & Montgomery Central be ready to compete and win this year? It should certainly be interesting

  4. I believe that Coach Rankin stays at Alcoa for the next 2 years while his son is still in high school and playing football with his classmates. After that all bets are off but I know he would be at the top of the list anywhere he wished to apply. I personally feel that Rutherford County would NOT be the way to go. With the addition of all the schools in that area it has made it much tougher of a place to get all of the players in one school. Back in the 90's when it was just Riverdale & Oakland it was much easier than what is the case at the present moment. Williamson County is the same way as well. Brentwood Academy is in another division but when it was just Franklin & Brentwood it was much easier. Now you have Centennial, Ravenwood, & Independence. I could see Rankin returning to the midstate and applying at a tradition filled place like Lincoln County when Thompson decides to hang up his whistle. I would have originally said David O'Connor was a "shoe in" for that job but with the success and the complete change in the landscape down at Giles County under his direction I wouldn't see why he would want to leave that place anytime soon.
  5. In the last 20 years Gary Rankin is 250-29 as a high school football coach. In that time he was been to 13 state title games and captured 8 of them. I would love to rate Rankin's win/loss record over the last 20 years against any other high school football coach in the nation. Not the state but the nation. When Rankin leaves Alcoa he will leave as the winningest football coach in the history of Tennessee high school football, he will have won more state titles than any coach in this state's history, and Alcoa at that time will be alone at #1 when it comes to overall state titles by an individual school. His numbers speak for themself and for those that always say "he has talent" well I can name several schools that have talent and can't ever win at the rate Alcoa does. Gary Rankin & George Quarles are in a class all by themselves as far as current high school football coaches in the state of Tennessee are concerned. After that is when I would include the class of guys like Glen McAdams, David Martin, Buck Coatney, Jeff Morris, etc.
