Haywood seniors, you have a lot to be proud of.  Over the past 4 years you have been an integral part of Tomcat teams who have:

-won 48 games and lost 8 (winning 10 or more games each season)
-won four Region 7-4A championships while going undefeated in region play
-made four state semifinal appearances and one final appearance
-set a season-record scoring average of 49.6 points per game (2022 season)

I would like to thank you for your contribution to the annals of Haywood High football.  Your talent, athleticism, and accomplishments have made it a pleasure to watch you play, and I’d like to wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Haywood underclassmen, you also have a lot of talent and athleticism, and I’d like to thank you for your contribution to Haywood’s success.  Continue to work hard in the off season, and I look forward to another exciting and successful season in 2023.

I’d also like to thank Coach Smith and staff for your time and hard work.

I know this will fall on deaf ears, but I would like to make a plea to the Haywood County School Board and County Commission.  I am a strong believer in academics, but athletics also plays a huge part in the success of our students and our school.  Athletics brings our community together.  I know there is a lot of money to be spent on infrastructure with the arrival of Blue Oval City, and I know improvements need to be made to our school facilities.  Please find a way to use some of that money to make improvements to our fieldhouse and athletic facilities (stadium).  You won’t regret it.

Well said... some changes need to be made. Imagine with the right support and facilities what this team could accomplish. The schedule is shaping up next season and some folks looking for tougher games may be happy.

Pearl Cohn is more battle tested than Haywood. By far, they have played a tougher schedule than Haywood. Similar to Haywood, they can score. If this game were to be in Nashville, I would lean with the Firebirds. This could be the first time Haywood has faced any sort of adversity. Curious: has Haywood trailed at any point of the season?

I'm not a believer in "playing tough games in August can prepare you for November." Why? because late August was 3 months ago, and a lot can change in between those that time. I don't think PC will be scared or timid. I respect the heck out of this Pearl Cohn program. I'm leaning with the Tomcats, but Pearl Cohn needs to strike first. I do believe that's the key. I won't be shocked if there is 65 points combined in this game.

Haywood played six teams which made it to the quarterfinals, including Covington who is in the semifinals. They played Bartlett and Henry County in the preseason. And no, they have not trailed a single second this season. But they are battle tested with two semis and one final from this senior group. I get your point, but this team is just different than those in the past. Pearl Cohn is a great team, but I'm leaning Haywood by 10 with weather and the home field a big factor.

How does this Haywood team compare to the team we played in 2020.

Had a DB playing quarterback two years ago and just couldn't throw period. This year's QB has lost once as a starter and is a true dual threat guy. We are a lot more disciplined and tougher than last year's squad which wilted in the cold. This is by far our most well-rounded squad under the Coach Smith regime. Kicking is definitely not as solid, but they make it work. Defensively, have huge and athletic interior linemen this year. You guys were clearly the better team that year. This season, our tempo is so much faster and don't turn the ball over - averaging almost 50 ppg.

Things might be lining up in Haywoods favor... Hypothetically speaking I think Haywood has a better shot at Anderson Co. than a Greeneville or Elizabethton Still have a very good Pearl team to play but I like the Tomcats chances

A lot will be if Pearl Cohn can handle the tempo and if the Mid-South crew will let Haywood go supersonic fast like last night's Middle Tennessee crew did. That tempo can wear a team down

  5. Long, but worth the read!

Yesterday, I had to write and post a press release regarding the upcoming football game in the district where I work which is Haywood County. The release was in regards to designated seating areas for home and away fans because of complaints by opposing fan bases. What I'm about to say, I would say regardless of whether or not I was employed by HCS. It's something I've said before I ever worked here and something I'll continue to believe until it changes.
I officiated high school basketball for ten years in West Tennessee. I only stopped officiating last year because of my new job and because my daughter came to live with me full-time. Sometimes, I miss it terribly.
As an official, I worked games all over West Tennessee - Memphis, Bolivar, Haywood, Martin, Medina, Milan, Jackson, Savannah, and everywhere in between. When I would get my game assignments for the week, there were schools I would see on my schedule and I would cringe. Haywood High School was never one of those schools. Neither was Bolivar, South Side, Northside, Middleton, Humboldt, Ripley, or any other school who may have had a certain narrative attached to their program. I loved working those games because the fans were LOUD, the players could play through contact, and all I had to worry about was keeping up with the speed of the game. I was enveloped in white noise, and it was easy to focus on the players and the game. Rarely did I hear individual fans complain about calls and, if they did, it was more of a collective groan or a sound of exasperation; it was never personal.
Calling games at South Side in Jackson was one of my favorite places because there was a group of fans who sat mid-court on the front row. They would give me heck, but during a time-out or a dead ball near their seating area, I could cut up with them and we could all have a laugh about something that happened in the game. It was part of the culture of being a fan.
On the flip side of that, there were fans at certain schools where the barbs felt personal. There were comments about my tattoos ("That's some cute ink you got there."), my physique ("Worry more about the game than your next steroid injection."), and my appearance ("Nice call, pretty boy.") That stuff never really bothered me in the moment because if you don't have thick skin as an official, you'll never make it. Normally, things like that would just make me laugh. But, the eye contact and the vitriol at those certain places felt different - there was no cutting up during a time-out or after the game.
I've thought about this a lot since yesterday because some of the same fan bases who have complained about the fans in Haywood County were also the same fan bases where I would dread going to officiate a ball game. Sportsmanship takes many shapes and forms during a game and a season. Players, officials, coaches, and fans all need to be respected. I also want to make a very clear point: a small sample size of a fan base doesn't reflect the entire program. This goes for the unnamed schools I just mentioned as well as Haywood County.
I can't help but think about culture and power and the systems that are in place that allow one fan base to have a louder voice than another fan base - to deem what's appropriate and what's not.
Are there behaviors that needed to be addressed? Certainly. But it has to go both ways; it has to be reflected and exhibited in all aspects of a given sporting event.
Here's what I know: before I ever worked in Haywood County, I loved the atmosphere of ball games here. Since I've worked in Haywood County, I've been able to meet and interact with some of the finest young athletes I've known. The coaching staff is talented and invests so much in the program. The fan base is passionate and supportive. Situations are never as cut and dry as they appear.
In the end, a high school sporting event should always be about the athletes on the field. Fans and fan bases should never overshadow the players. All of our kids deserve that.
Here's to a fun, cold, and respectful game tomorrow night in the best football town I know.

  6. Fortunately, the game is played on the field and won and lost on the field. These distractions would derail a lot of teams, but I give credit to Haywood's coaches for always keeping their players grounded and ready to play. Real fans will show up to the game despite the cold and pull for their team, regardless of which side they sit on. What Haywood has done on the field this season often gets overlooked because of outside noise. Don't paint Haywood's players and true with this broad brush.

Ha! Being a ref is hard. I have learned to it banging on them so much because I do not think most folks could do a better job. I can not speak for the new coaching staff, but history says SGC would love to keep Haywood on the schedule. I doubt they do because it would likely be the quarter final match up in the playoffs. Back before we were region opponents we scheduled Haywood for 2 home and away series I believe.

arrogant young coach who encourages some iffy pregame things " I have no idea man... Can not comment 1 way or the other, because I simply have no idea.

    Always appreciate your perspective.

I am growing to hate social media. However, I did see a FG attempt by SGC that was clearly good and the refs said it was no good. Absolute head scratcher.... Would not have made much a difference in the outcome of the game but that field goal was clearly good.

Football games bring out a lot of emotions in folks. When anger, disappointment, and emotions get involved it makes for a volatile situation sometimes. Any reasonable person would agree that Haywood has a better team this year. Doesn't mean we have a bad team or boys didn't play hard.....

I thought that field goal was good too, lol. On the other hand, the first onside kick went about seven yards and towards the end of the game Haywood clearly recovered a fumbled kick right in front of me. If Haywood got the best of an officiating crew that would be the first time. And for whatever reason, SGC is not well liked among many in the region this year - a lot which has to do with an arrogant young coach who encourages some iffy pregame things and talks a bit too much. He might learn something along the way. Gonna miss the series either way if SGG doesn't re-up.

Question for the Haywood faithful; having come right by Haywood’s stadium on my way to Munford last night, why can’t/couldn’t the Haywood county officials put some of that Covid money most counties got toward a nicer facility for the Tomcats? Having driven over to Tipton County and seeing the nice turf fields at Brighton and then Munford, the Haywood teams deserve something like that too. The caliber of teams you guys continually put out deserve it too. I don’t mean to knock any Haywood County officials, it was just a thought that popped in my head on the way home last night.

We ask that question all the time...

You are 100% correct. Money or lack thereof impacts everything.
My list in order of importance:

    1. Money

    2. Population (see 1)

    3. Talent (see 1 & 2)

    4. Coaching (see 1)

    5. Facilities (see 1)

To dig a little deeper into the why this is an issue between west tn and the rest of state. The state mostly handles all manufacturing startups looking to locate in the state. Where do the majority of those jobs go? Middle and east tn.  Why? Couple of different reasons but the obvious ones are more people equal a better chance at hiring more qualified workers. That is the explanation given anyway.  The dirty, not so secret reason, is that is where most political donations come from, because once again that is the area of the state with the most money.

It always circles back to money. West tn gets the scraps while middle and east get the gravy when it comes to jobs and wages in an overall sense. Hopefully the Blue Oval complex in Haywood will change things some for rural west tn. If it does what I think it will as described above Haywood may win multiple championships in a row cause they have the talent. With money available to hire better coaches and more staff, plus facility improvements and off season training geared toward skills enhancement……..look out.

Better coaches? Lmao - maybe more staff, but their coaching staff is pretty strong. Facilities and support are the biggest needs.

I don’t understand why. Covington is a good program, I don’t understand why they would shy away. The games between us always had a good crowd and good atmosphere.

Losing can get you canned in Covington, where they expect to win every game.

  12. 13 hours ago, CHARGERFAN said:

Well, Covington might not be one of them. They have put 8 teams in Region 7-3A. That gives us 7 region games each year. Then, if you add In-county rivals Munford and Brighton, that makes 9 games. There’s only room for one more non-region game on our schedule. I would like for it to be Haywood, to give us a competitive opponent, but who knows what will happen?

Covington wasn't going to play even before the reclassification from what I was told

I know that the Rebels are in the same region and all as the Tomcats but that program is one in would like to see make consistent deep runs in the playoffs!

They are a long ways from ending HAywood's run. Haywood is young too and loaded in their lower classes

The Rebels come to Milan for a rd 2 playoff game. Milan took the regular season game just a few weeks ago 28-6. But Obion is playing well after taking out #1 seed and 9-1 Melrose. Who takes this one??

I understand the score may have been a lot closer first time than it indicates, like maybe they had some turnovers in the red zone. Color me shocked they got by Melrose. I know Memphis teams are poorly coached and don't react well to schemes, but I thought the athletic ability was too great for Melrose. Haywood has played all these teams and I thought OC was the weakest by far and was most impressed by Milan regardless of the score. Those who know better told me OC would win handily over Melrose- that they are well coached and do things right and not to judge by the way Haywood dominated them. All that said, I see Milan advancing by a score of 24-14 and coming to HC in week 3.

Who is #6 for us? I thought he had a great game last night. I haven’t noticed him all year. He seemed to have some reliable hands

Zyon Washington - a junior. He has played on the off side on offense all season and has made a few big plays last few weeks as he has recovered from a broken hand he has been playing with all season. He also started at corner last two weeks. One of many weapons so I can see how he gets lost with Person and Cam. Coach has a way of breaking things like this out as we advance. I look for Person to be playing a little defense too.
