  1. McPhail did come just to be an assistant. He wanted to be an assistant and have time to watch his two sons play. Don't have to ask I know him well. Now that Anderson has retired sure he wants it.

He wanted to come to Overton because he knew Anderson would not be there much longer and he wanted a good shot at the job when he left.

  2. I dont want to go back and quote each thing Id like to reply to so Ill just hit a couple quick points..

    * Campbell was in no way promised anything at all when he came to Overton in reference to what happens when Anderson left.

    * Mcphail did not come to Overton to just be an assistant. Dont believe me? Just ask him. He has had no issue telling people that he planned on putting in for Head Coach when Anderson was done.

*In reference to the players from the early 2000s Hillsboro team, those kids were rezoned from Glencliff, not Overton. They were not there because of M. Phillips, they were there because thats where they were zoned to go.

*To the comment made about RA doing "nothing" at Riverdale, if a 10-0 season and 2 trips to the 6A state semis is considered "nothing". Then I guess you are right. Both of those semi-final losses were to Maryville by the way, who beats everyone.

  3. I checked the other D2-A schools websites and DCA is the only other East/Middle school with their 2013 schedule posted.

    8/23 at East Robertson

    8/30 Jackson Christian School

    9/6 Ezell-Harding

    9/13 at FRA

    9/20 at King's Academy

    9/27 Boyd-Buchanan

    10/4 Knox Webb

    10/11 Open

    10/18 at Friendship

    10/25 at Davidson Academy

    11/1 Mount Juliet Christian

  4.

    5) develop a great working relationship with the cumberland university coaching staff

I agree with basically all of what you said except for this part. Im not actually saying i dont agree with it because i dont really get why you think it matters if they have a relationship with Cumberland's coaches.

Crain had been a coach at Cumberland and had a working relationship with them. I dont see how it helped him in anyway.

  5. When Hunters Lane is losing (and losing very badly) to traditionally poor performing programs such as Glencliff and Hillwood who can they schedule? Montgomery Central perhaps? Who do you suggest they put on their schedule?

They just have to win. I'm sure they'll start winning next season. Maplewood has had similar down periods.

I could look through the standings and finf plenty of people they could call. I know a few teams that are not near as strong as a brentwood or oakland that would be willing to play them. Just takes a little effort

  6. When you have 1 game in 3 years, i dont think there is a cupcake win. Im talking about finding non region games they can be competitive in so the kids can build confidence. Losing to teams like brentwood and oakland wont help build the program at all. Until kids in the school start seeing some wins, they wont come back out for the team.

  7. They are 0-20 in the last 2 years and rarely even play a close game.

Hopefully whoever the coach is, they work a little harder on the non region schedule. The past 2 years, they played Maplewood, Brentwood and Oakland for the non region game. With back to back 0-10 seasons, they should be able to schedule some games they can at least play close in.

Any chance of a coaching change?

  8. He was a DC in 2005 and 2006. Sounds like you are kind of blasting him by saying he has not done anything and that CR can do better. So I ask you, who is a better fit a CR in your opinion? What has he done to be a better fit?

I was gone by then. Why did he not continue in that position?

I dont have anyone in mind. Im not even saying he is a bad choice. I would just think they would look for someone who has either been a head coach before or has some consistant sucess as an OC or DC. Urban Meyer went directly from WR coach to head coach so it can be done and done well. I was simple making an observation of the situation.

  9. Like the fork says, your words seem harsh. When did you play at Overton? Did you play for Thigpen? By the way, you are incorrect. He has been a DC. You also left out that he was the DB coach on defense for Overton. CR is not a new school either. Most brand new schools are not loaded with talent because most open with only underclassmen such as freshman and sophomores as CR did about four years ago.

I was there in the early 2000s. What did I say that was harsh? I simply stated what he had done at Overton. He does coach DBs but like I said, its still only a position coach. I dont know of anytime in the last 10 years he has been DC and if he was, it didnt last long. Tell me again what i said that was harsh?

  10. I played at Overton..Let me start by saying I care one way or another about CR or coach thigpen.. My question is.. Why is it that CR, a brand new school that is loaded with talent, settling for Thigpen? He may not havw the job yet but he is a finalist and i would think they could do better. Nothing against him, but he has never been a head coach or even an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator. Just seems like a big jump for a WR coach. And please understand, i am not trying to bash him in anyway.

  11. No way they hire from within for two reasons. One, there is no one on staff or even in the building that should even be given consideration. This should be a new hire to have a complete fresh start. Two, if they were going to hire from within then CR would already have their coach. There would be no need to conduct interviews. If they hire from within then they lose even more credibility because they will have wasted everyone's time.

Doesnt James Reese work at CR still? If so, how would he be not someone that should be even considered? He was once the head football coach at TSU so I would assume he would have done enough to be considered if he wanted the job. I know he has not been part of the coaching staff for the last 2 seasons.

  12. 5 wins in 3 years. That is why.

I think what you mean is why would they hire someone already on the football staff when they have not won. Good point.. but the rumor i heard was that they were going to hire from within the school BUT the person is not a member of the current football staff..

  13. MomaBaker,

I wished I could do that but TSSAA rules won't allow me to apply for head coaching jobs until I have been a high school assistant for 5 years unless it is a private school. My old middle school principal is the Executive Director of TSSAA. We had that discussion already. Thanks for the heads up though.

Im not in any position to correct the Executive Director of the TSSAA but maybe yall didnt discuss the details enough..or maybe i am wrong but..

I am pretty sure anyone who is a full time teacher can be named a head coach. The 5 year rule i know applies to Non-Faculty coaches being named head coach. Also, the rules for hiring coaches are the same public or private.

  14. The job is posted on tssaa website. CR did not dress 100 players. It was more about 60-70. That is still enough that you would expect some decent depth. I think change was needed. This is abners 3rd head coaching job in metro and he has yet to field a team with a winning record. The way metro does things, he will probably be hired as head coach at one of the other openings.

  15. I have a question for xfairviewfan..

Let me start by saying I don't have a dog in the fight. I've never seen fairview nor Milan play and know very little about either school. I have read your post about your dislike for the fairview head coach and was curious to know if it was personal or you actually don't think he is a good football coach. I think he has been there 3 years now and the last 2 were pretty good. I don't know of any history that he has coaching before then.
