  1. Soddy Daisy Wrestlers Shock Top-Ranked Bradley Campbell Lewis Pin The Difference In 33-28 Thriller by John Hunt posted January 20, 2011 CLEVELAND -- The Soddy Daisy Trojans have won some mighty big wrestling matches during coach Steve Henry's tenure, but none in recent memory can top the win over previously-unbeaten and top-ranked Bradley Thursday night. It was a match for the ages, a classic battle between two of the best teams in the state. The ever-proud Trojans came out on top, 33-28. Both teams claimed seven individual wins, but the difference came down to bonus points and that's where the fourth-ranked Trojans prevailed. Two-time defending state champ Campbell Lewis got the third of three pins for the Trojans, but his was the biggest as it came in the final match of the evening here at Jim Smiddy Arena. Trailing by a point going into that final match, Lewis sent the Soddy Daisy faithful into a frenzy when he got the pin call 57 seconds into the third period. The win improves Soddy Daisy to 19-3 for the season while the loss is the first for the Bears this season. Bradley's last dual-meet loss was to these same Trojans in the finals of the State Duals in 2007, a streak of 78 straight victories. The loss at home was the first for the Bears since Cleveland turned the trick way back in 1993, a string of 133 in a row. Both coaches knew it would be tight and they were right. "This was a classic match, one that everyone wanted to see. I think they got their money's worth tonight," said Soddy Daisy's Henry moments after the match ended. "It's always a war when these two teams meet, but we have tremendous respect for Bradley and everything about their program. "This is pretty awesome and I couldn't be more proud, but we have to stay focused. We can enjoy the moment, but we have to get back to work," Henry said quickly. "Our kids wrestled tough from top to bottom and I feel honored to be the winning coach tonight. And it's a milestone to win in this gym as well. "The season is still a long way from over. This is just one dual meet. We still have a lot of work to do," Henry concluded. Bradley coach Steve Logsdon hates losing as much as anyone associated with high school wrestling. It was a bitter pill for him to swallow as he watched his team fall to the more aggressive team. "We expected a close match and we got it, but I made my kids watch all of those folks from Soddy Daisy celebrating this win. "You look at the little things like winning the close matches, getting bonus points and getting key points in critical situations. We didn't do any of that tonight. "One sentence to summarize tonight is the fact that they outfought us as a team and that's really hard for me to live with. "I'm not going to point fingers because there's plenty of blame to go around, but those guys just came in here and took it to us tonight," Logsdon added. There was one tie and five lead changes along the way. Soddy Daisy's biggest lead came at 27-15 following Jacob Stevens' 13-5 major decision at 112. The Bears then won the next three matches for a 28-27 lead with one match remaining. Bradley's comeback included a technical fall from Aaron Hutson at 119 and major decisions from Ethan Hames at 125 and Jericho Crutcher at 130. But with the match on the line and one of the nation's longest winning streaks in any sport at stake, Lewis came through with flying colors. "Campbell has struggled all year with injuries and stuff, but he knew what was on the line tonight," praised Henry. Lewis improves to 38-2 for the season. "We've been busting our tails as a team this last month, so I felt like I had to win that last match for the team," he explained. "I've been under pressure before with other big matches, but the atmosphere was intense and it was so loud I couldn't hear anything. "I didn't really want to be put in that situation where my match determined the outcome, but I felt confident if it did that I was capable of getting the job done. "Winning the state and the nationals as a freshman were both big, but us winning this match is right up there," Lewis concluded. While Lewis had the third pin for the Trojans, Josh Elliott and Blaike Henry had the other two. Brett Ervin added a technical fall at 189 while Stevens had the only major decision at 112. Jonah Smith and Alex Seeley added wins by regular decision for the Trojans. Seeley's was perhaps the turning point in the match when he stunned top-ranked Patrick Benson, 11-6, in the 285-pound class. Seeley improved to 19-6 with the win while the loss was Benson's third against 25 wins. Bradley Colbaugh got Bradley's only pin when he stuck defending state runner-up Turbo Smith a minute into the first period. Other winners for Bradley included regular decisions for Tyler Pitts at 140, Jacob Bailey at 160 and Tucker Bolton at 215. If you missed Thursday's match, chances are good you might get to see a rematch next Thursday at Walker Valley in the Region Duals. 2. Great to hear that about TJ. He's a good kid. I think it goes without saying that if McCallie wouldn't have lost Satterfield, Clements, and Prevost all to transfers this year they would be the clear cut favorites in this match. On the flip side, Baylor did lose state champion David Helton due to football commitments with Duke. Should be a real close one again this year!
  3. I understand predictions are just opinions, but I must ask what makes you think those outcomes will happen at 125 and 145? Zach Watson defeated Landon Reed (Heritage) by a score of 11-0 in the McCallie Invitational, and Landon Reed pinned Alex Ward in the 2nd period. Despite them both having state titles under their belt respectfully, Zach is simply at a different level than Alex at this point in their careers. Then Michael Hooker comes in this being his 4th time to compete in this dual meet, and not to mention he's the best pinner in the state. Popp is a young talent, but lacks the inexperience in big time matches and against big time opponents. I don't see there being any way Popp avoids the fall here.
  4. Not sure if it has already been mentioned, but I would like to see both of the mats for the finals be moved closer together so the casual fan has the ability to watch both the D1 & D2 matches. Last year it felt like we were in two separate gyms for the finals.
  5. I believe McCallie and MBA attended last year.
