  6. Teenage Girl Shot Outside McGavock High School" Metro police say a 17-year-old girl was shot three times with a 45-caliber weapon in the arms and chest outside McGavock High School Tuesday night. Police believe it may have been connected to a possible drive-by shooting. A basketball game was in progress in the high school auditorium. Witnesses saw a black SUV driving away. Officers roped off the parking lot and kept people inside the basketball game. The girl was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
  7. News 2 is reporting a 17 year-old female has been shot near McGavock High School tonight and possibly everyone is being held inside the basketball gym until everything cleared up. Any details? Sounds like it may have been a drive by shooting and they are searching for a SUV. I wonder if it had anything to do with this ... McGavock Football Player Found With Gun, School Shocked" Friends of a McGavock High School senior and football player found with a 9mm pistol on Monday are shocked the student would get his hands on a gun. Monday afternoon, Metro Police found 18-year-old Michael Sowell and a 17-year-old McGavock High School student with the semi-automatic gun in Old Hickory. Those who know Sowell said his positive attitude and involvement in school is a far cry from his actions Monday. Police said Sowell was parked on a side street in a 1992 Lexus when they found him. The weapon was lying across his lap. Police also uncovered 20 hollow point bullets in the car. Angela Poellnitz is the registrar and McGavock High School and has known Sowell for four years. “He may have been influenced or even provoked to do something of this sort. I really don't believe that's him, at all,” she said. “Michael’s usually friendly, laughing, joking.... He doesn't seem to be a violent individual." Sowell played football at McGavock High School and was very involved in athletics. People who knew him in the athletic department said they can't understand how the student went from “highlights to headlines.” The 9mm gun that was confiscated from Sowell is now in the Metro Police propertyroom where it will be entered in the police data. From there, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will trace the gun and compare their findings with police. Police said the problem is, the trace only goes back to the original owner, and most of the time the gun has been sold or passed on a few different times. The particular weapon, said police, is one they often find on the streets, involved in criminal activity. Metro Police Capt. Todd Henry said, "Kids are killing kids. As a society, we have to do something about it because we are not going to arrest our way of the juvenile crime problem." Police said tracing the weapon will have no effect on Sowell's case because he is 18 and of legal age to own a gun.
  8. Hillsboro beat Northwest by about 40 right before Northwest went over and beat Centennial. I still can't believe it happened myself?
  9. LaVonte Henderson did play against Centennial, and they still lost. Clarksville is missing their football players so they are thin in the post. I did see Centennial lose to a terrible Northwest team at Harpeth last weekend though. Indy beat Clarksville last year in a Christmas tournament, but never even made it to the region. I guess you never know!
  10. Leaf Chronicle ... Clarksville High, last season’s Class AAA state runner-up, opened its season Tuesday in unique style playing two Hall of Fame games on the same night. In a rematch of last season’s sectional, Lavonte Henderson and Tyrone Caldwell scored 25 points each, and the Wildcats beat Franklin High 86-67. “Ted (Young) has one of the better programs in the midstate. We’ve enjoyed playing him, because it shows us where we need to be among the best teams in the midstate,” Franklin coach Jay Johnson said. “I told him before the game it seems like we had just left here. They’re an athletic team that did a good job of answering everything we did every time we made a run.” Franklin led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Wildcats took a 32-24 lead into the half. Clarksville went into fourth quarter ahead 52-44, then outscored the Rebels by 11 in the final eight minutes. “I always enjoy playing against a Jay Johnson team, because they’ll stretch you and make you play better,” Young said. “I thought we did a lot of good things on defense, and we also did a very good job of game management. “Anytime you can keep your turnovers under 15 at the high school level you’ve done a pretty good job.” Franklin’s Kevin Kegarise scored 17 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Clarksville High also had 11 points from Reed Harper and 10 from Averitt Baggett. The Wildcats played Nashville Advancement Christian Academy in the second game of its doubleheader. Caldwell, along with three players from NACA, will sign with Austin Peay today on the first day of the fall signing period. NACA defeated Clarksville 69-66.
  11. Clarksville beat Franklin 86-67 tonight.
  12. NACA plays at Clarksville tomorrow at 7:00.
  13. Kenwood trails at halftime By JIMMY TRODGLEN The Leaf-Chronicle NASHVILLE — Kenwood trails Maplewood 10-6 at halftime in the opening round of the 4A state football playoffs. Kenwood had two first-half turnovers, the second leading to a field goal. Kenwood took a 6-0 lead with 5:26 left in the first quarter when Amius Smith connected with his brother, Demarius Smith, on a third and 26 from the Knights’ 43-yard line. Demarius Smith worked his way behind the Panthers’ secondary, and caught a wide open touchdown pass. The extra point failed. Maplewood answered on the following drive when quarterback Chris Simpson broke loose for a 56-yard run, and then connected with Marcus Bowins on a 16-yard touchdown toss two plays later. Maplewood added a 22-yard field goal from Dominique Howard with 1:17 left before halftime. Kenwood drove from its 33 to the Panthers’ 4-yard line in the final 77 seconds of the half. A third down pass from Smith to Joe Harris was caught at the 4 with 1.7 seconds, but time ran out before the Knights could snap the ball.
  14. LC - "Austin Peay’s men’s basketball team has received its final verbal committment from Mike Smith a 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard/forward from Nashville Advancement Christian Academy. Smith joins Clarksville High point guard Tyrone Caldwell, Edwardsville (IL) forward Anthony Campbell and Nashville Advancement Christian Academy teammates, forward Robert Elam and point guard James Harris."
  15. Nashville Advancement Christian Academy probably has the best basketball team in the state of Tennessee. 3 Austin Peay signees and transfer Martino Brock from Ridgeway. I believe they play Clarksville and Ridgeway next week in Hall of Fame games. NACA isn't associated with the TSSAA. This is a different school from Nashville Christian, who plays in single A.
  16. Sam Porter, who transferred from Clarksville High, is a player. He was the best player in Clarksville in Middle School, and played a lot for Clarksville his Freshman year. He even played in their substate game against Hunters Lane. He is a strong and quick point guard who will dominate single A with Clarksville Academy. He's a D-1 prospect. Just got some bad advice and missed out on CHS's run to the AAA State Championship game last year.
  17. Hunters Lane avoids forfeits By JEFF LOCKRIDGE Staff Writer After a weekend of uncertainty, Hunters Lane learned today it does not have to forfeit its seven football victories this season. Hunters Lane Coach Richard Campbell and Metro Athletics Director Scott Brunette spoke with Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association Executive Director Ronnie Carter this morning regarding eligibility concerns over a part-time starter who has played in all of the Warriors’ nine games. Even though the player is currently in his fifth year of high school, he was ruled eligible since he did not attend at least 40 days of school during two semesters – the minimum days required to be counted against a player’s eight semesters of athletic eligibility. Campbell learned of the player’s fifth-year status Friday night and immediately brought it to Brunette’s attention. Hunters Lane (7-2) would clinch the top playoff seed in Region 5-5A with a win over Hendersonville this week.
  18. 9-AAA has dominated 10-AAA the last five years with the exception of Clarksville. Clarksville won the region last year and was runner-up the year before. Dickson County is the only other 10-AAA team to win a region tournament game in the last 5 years, when they upset Beech two years ago in the quarterfinals. 2006 Region 5-AAA Enrollments: Springfield High School - 977 Beech Senior High School - 1,109 Kenwood High School - 1,162 Northwest High School - 1,234 Henry Co. High School - 1,338 Rossview High School - 1,356 Gallatin High School -1,358 Clarksville High School - 1,362 Hendersonville High School - 1,389 Northeast High School - 1,435 Dickson Co. High School - 1,436 Mt. Juliet High School - 1,465 Wilson Central High School - 1,506 Smyrna High School - 1,594 LaVergne High School - 1,826
  19. Final 2007 District 10-AAA Standings : 1. Clarksville 14-0 2. Springfield 12-2 3. Henry Co. 8-6 4. Northeast 6-8 5. Northwest 5-9 6. Rossview 4-10 7. Dickson Co. 4-10 8. Kenwood 3-11 I think Springfield will drop this year, and Northeast, Rossview, and Dickson should be better. Hopefully the district will be more competitive in the region. Clarksville has been the only team to have success in recent years.
