  1. Milan has a run stop D! Tha Alcoa vs Milan state games where all great defensive games! Milan just can't handle a offense that passes 95% of tha time!!!! AGAIN BEST TEAM IN 3a and in my eyes best team in tha state CAK!!! Now my vols need to be gettin there hands on C High cuz that kid is a ball player PERIOD!!!!

Really?!! Milan couldn't beat Alcoa, but CAK for sure couldn't beat Maryville. Just be content with what you guys accomplished which is awesome, but Mlan will never be on Alcoa's level & this will be the last year any team besides Alcoa wins the 3A title. I would bet a month's salary on that one...

  2. murvil v siegel-still can't believe how it went down-crazee

favorite game i played in 1984 murvil v ae-we were down 21-7 at half-came back and won 28-21-ae had leroy thompson-game was at ae-it was nuts!!!

Spanky, you might have played with my one of my cousins on my mom's side (David Henderson). Interestingly enough, he & another cousin on my dad's side (Jay Malone) are good friends even though they didn't play together at Maryville. Davidtold me the story of how good Leroy was & wished he would have went to UT instead of Penn State.

  3. One was a game I played in, the other was one I watched when I was a kid in 1989. The game I played in was Maryville vs. Powell in 1995. Powell had a good team that year & we (Maryville) were undefeated going into the game. A win would clinch our 1st Region/District title in close to 10 years, Powell was a heated rivalry then for us. We recovered a fumble snap from Collin Steen to regain possession late in the game, converted a 4 & long to get in scoring position, the hit an inside revers hand-off to current Alcoa assistant (David Sweetland) to pull ahead with 30 seconds left on the clock. Talk about gut wrencher!!!

The other was the Alcoa vs. Austin East regular season game in 1989 at A-E. That was one of the biggest crowds outside of a Maryville-Alcoa game I've ever seen. Alcoa was loaded that year with Billy Williams, Shannon Mitchell, Rusty Chambers, Chad Jackson, etc. Austin East was as dominant as ever & had spanked Maryville consistently during that era. The game went to overtime & Billy Williams blocked a late kick to seal the game. Vaulted himself off one of the lineman’s back & got high enough to block the kick. Sent the Alcoa sidelines into a frenzy!!

  4. I know the Coach Rankin thing comes up every year, so I'm not surprised by it now. As many know, Rankin's daughter attends CAK, and that has lead to further speculation. But if anyone thinks that CAK is going to pay a truck load of money to a football coach they just don't know how CAK operates. Coach R.Bradley is probably one of the most underpaid coaches in TN High School football. His salary is probably half of what the other private school coaches in Knoxville receive. Unless a private donor, who wants a specific coach that demands high $, steps up to the plate and forks over the money, CAK will not be raiding any coaching staffs based on salary incentives if/when CRB leaves CAK. As far as Rusty going to Carson Newman, the Eagles offered him a job a few years back as Passing Coordinator. He declined the offer for a variety of reasons, but money wasn't one of them. I have not heard anything from "inside" sources about this happening. But I will say it looks on the surface to be a good fit. CN could use an infusion of high octane offense built around a passing game. They have been a run oriented team forever and it is probably time to shake things up a bit. After much success in the lower division, CN has stagnated at the higher level they are in now and need something different to get the program moving again. Coach Sparks is a legend and a good man, but at the age of 68 and battling some health concerns, it may be a good time for him to retire. CN is a Christian based school and that is very important to Rusty. Its just up the street and wouldn't require any big cultural adjustments as far as the people and area of the country are concerned. And finally, I believe Rusty Bradley is qualified to coach at the college level. He will need some grooming & help to handle other aspects of the job, but at least he won't be required to be in a classroom teaching. And if CN would allow Mark Bradley to come along with Rusty it would make even more sense based upon Mark's extensive college coaching experience. And maybe Rusty could manage to persuade C.High & D. Howell to follow him to CN and help him introduce his "SpreadCoast" offense. It all makes sense to me, but that doesn't mean it will happen.

Good insight here... I will definitely put Bradley up there with GQ as two local high school coaches who have the IQ to operate a deadly passing attack every year. Carson Newman can look at a lot of talent from this area alone & a previous winning tradition as reasons why they can make it back to the top of DII. I also thought that Carl Torbush was there as the DC, can anyone confirm that?

  5. Honest mistake. Gruden isn't interested in the Catholic job ... he just likes those "2 for $1.49" corndogs. I'm hearing that Steve Fickert (another former WB coach) and Charles "Cookie" Frye (Maryville / Alcoa connections) are on the short list.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Now that is funny! I have a ton of stories about Coach Frye, good guy but not a good football coach at all...

  6. Looking at the past hires at Tennessee It wouldn't be smart to sign on there without knowing who the coaching staff is going to be. Even if they hired Nick Saben it would take 3 or 4 years to fix that mess.

Using that same analogy, what does that say about DB? You guys had one of the best (if not the best) coaches in Maryville history in Ted Wilson & still couldn't win a title. There's no question DB has more quality players than Maryville, so how do you explain coming up empty handed over the course of 60+ years? Even the titles you guys do claim came from voters & not played on the field.

So does that mean the Eastman-Kodak fumes is what's causing your programs futility or is it the lack of coaching that "wastes" DB's along the lines of how you say UT's talent gets wasted???

  7. Just in. Vanderbilt out recruited Tennessee last year and will do the same this year. So maybe he is to good to waste 4 years at Tennessee playing for the worst coaching staff in the SEC.

Wrong, not last year (http://insider.espn....=2&viewmore=yes) or this year (http://247sports.com...iteTeamRankings). Of course, having a battle of football IQ with anybody from DB is foolish as more times than not you guys come to the fight unarmed & uneducated.

As far as Foreman starting for any team, don't count on that... He might start at a skill position, but not at QB (especially at Maryville). Heck, the competition you guys play on a consistent basis is laughable & would make anybody look good. Say what you want, but DB has been the biggest choke artists in TSSAA history having the most program wins of all time (easy against sub-par competition) with no titles in the modern playoff era (http://www.tssaa.org...etTheRecord.cfm). So have fun being bounced out of the 1st round again...

BTW - For the record, UT's staff has underachieved, but they aren't as bad as you think. Offensively, their staff is great (especially Graham & Pittman), defensively not so much. I'm not happy about it by any means, but you can't argue the fact that they have played the 2nd toughest schedule in the country, at least made it close against SEC competition as opposed to Candy, & will more than likely win the rest of their games.

  8. That would be fine and Dandy if Blackman didn't have fans that ran their mouth like Mykidsdad . You can't bash a 3 time State Champion when you haven't even sniffed one , win something first before you yap that Mouth .

Where is the world does he get the idea that Maryville is full of hillbillies?? lol Maybe Stars can answer that one...

  9. Listen Deon ... I have stated multiple times Alcoa is the better team ... neutral site has nothing to do with the game ... score was not going to be 49-0 .. Alcoa had to make 2 excellent plays just to get the 10 points they had with 6 mins left in 4th Qtr .. were they outplaying Fulton yes .. offensively we kept getting good plays then bad ..no consistency ... Alcoa didnt have as easy a time on our defense .. we were competitive on defense ... our offense gave up the last 14 points on turnovers ... so we will have to agree to disagree about 49-0 ... that was never happening. Go back to yuor 3A contenders game.

Don't listen to Deon, he is a legend in his own mind...

  10. He played for Furman, i am pretty sure...Idk where he started out coaching, though...Played for Jeff County in HS in the 80's

He came my Sr. year from a little school in Georgia. Can't remember what their name was, but he started off as our QB coach under Hammontree & was brought in spefically to upgrade the passing game under then OC David Ellis (now the OL coach).

Funnier still, he was actually the ball boy growing up in Jeff County for Carson-Newman's team when Hammontree, Ellis, Pete Billingsley (my DB/WR coach @ Maryville), & Larry Kerr (Halls/Aderson County) were all playing for the Eagles back in the day... Small world.

  11. These are in no particular order, but all woudl deserve mentioned on this thread & I'll list the reasons why

    • Charles McTorry (Overton) - 3 time Finalist (Champ 2x), National Champ, recent MMA figher, greatest athlete in TN wrestling history
    • Marquise Nelson (Kirby) - 3 time Finalist (Champ 2x), High School AA, JUCO AA & Champ
    • Dee Parker (Red Bank) - HW Champ (96) one bad mutha f@#$$. Heard Jappa personally call him "Sir" at State tournament after he destroyed our HW at Maryville (Scott Jones).
    • Darrell Hughes (McGavock) - HW Champ (95), could have been a 2x champ if he would have made weight at Regions in 1996
    • Heath Eslinger (Bradley) - 2x Champ, 3x SoCon champ, teammate of mine at UTC, current UTC head coach
    • George Lewis (McCallie) - 3x Champ, one of McAllie's greats along with Vance & Wunderlich
    • Waylon Lowe (Jefferson County) - State Champ, Multiple time DII College National Champ, current MMA fighter, has fought in the UFC a number of times
    • Brian Provezano (Red Bank) - 2x Finalist (Champ 1x), destroyed "Rampage" in the 2nd round of 97 State Tourney on his way to the Finals, teammate of mine at UTC
    • Carlos Thompson (Cleveland) - 3x Finalist (Champ 2x), All State LB/FB for Cleveland's 3 time 4A football state champs
    • Brian Guthrie (Oakland) - 2x Champ, wrestled like a mad man on a bum knee, crazy looking as heck, mean as a snake
    • Craig Johnson (Seymour) - 2x Finalist (1x Champ), teammate of mine at UTC, current MMA pro with several state amateur MMA titles
    • Nick Breeden (Seymour) - 2x Finalist (1x Champ), pinned Mondelli for FR in 54 seconds to win state title in 96 & beat a very deep 215 pound field that year to death
    • Quantel Langford (Cleveland) - State Runner Up, SoCon Champ, newly turned Pro MMA fighter. Absolute animal in the practice room & teammate of mine at UTC

There's a few more I could list, but those are all deserving

  12. I have to agree with many of the choices here on the board, but my favorite was the Mondelli kid that was killing one of the Jordan brothers from Overton at the state duals. Mondelli went on to get DQ because he bit Jordan while he had Jordan in a pinning combination. I also have to agree with kid from Franklin Tywan Armstrong this man was just that a man among boys. Tywan wouls scare you just by looking at you!! Oh and we can't forget Coach Joe Blair we was as tough as they come. You can pay me back Joe for saying that at the region.

    Coach Miller

Joppa, that wasn't one of the Jordan twins that Mondelli bit, that was at 215 when Mondelli would have faced my boy Nick Breeden again at State. The Jordans were at 152 & 160 below McTorry...

  13. I remember too well Cleveland putting 70 on the board vs Maryville in 1993. I expect a much improved Cleveland team this year. Can't wait to see the Rebels play.

I played that game, but let's not forget we put up 28 against them & that was more than anyone (including Brentwood Academy) had scored on them all year. They were beating us 28-21 at half & we tied it up before they ran off 42 straight on us to finish up at 70. A few guys I wrestled with in college played on that Cleveland team & they said we pissed them off & their locker room was crazy at half. That prompted Coach Monroe to give a rather lively speech & motivated them to run it up on us the rest of the night...

  14. John Olive was a nice guy. He didn't have a lot of success but it wasn't all his fault. John had some assistants that the kids hated with a passion. I remember in 1986 I heard about how great the freshmen team was. This group of kids went undefeated as Freshmen and killed everyone they played including Alcoa. The same Alcoa kids that went 15-0 their senior year and won state. What happened is over half of those kids quit between their freshmen year and senior year. The classes behind that class had kids quitting in droves.

When Tim Hammontree showed up he told those coaches that their services weren't needed. Hammontree got Ellis and Quarles in. He installed toughness and discipline. If Heritage will buy into Hammontree they will be tough.

I agree on some things, but there were a lot of players who didn't like Olive much either. They said he tried to get "too cute" on offense & could have been more succesful with simpler schemes.

The two main coaches that were run off (Casteel & Summey) were horrible. I will say that not all the players were happy with Hammontree either because has could be fairly abrasive as well. It was his way or the highway, but I imagine it was a lot like that when Jim Moore was at Heritage. Those two are a lot a like & for whatever reason Coach Moore wasn't there very long.

  15. Hammondtree is no GQ.

How so? Both are really smart coaches for different sides of the ball. I played for both & can honestly say they're both fairly equal in regards to their coaching chops. Say all you want, but GQ came into a much better situation than "Hammontree" had when he came to Maryville. Not many people have a foundation like the one GQ had to build from.

  16. Yeah, considering the fact it wasn't until '92 when Maryville made it back to the playoffs, I would say that's about right. The Maryville era between the Story years to Hammontree's run was pretty sad except the lone year when Olive took Maryville to the playoffs in '92 as I mentioned above & then subsequently left (thank god)...

Maryville needed a culture change & Hammontree was the guy who turned it around. Granted my Sophomore year we went 5-5 under him, but he definitely changed the culture & brought in Ellis, Quarles, the year long commitment, & everything else that GQ has has to build from. If I left anyone out, I want to thank all of the coaches that helped bring Maryville back to the position they were in when my dad was there in the 70's. THANK YOU
