  1. The athlete from MTCS lived two doors down from me. It was a fact. The father had some severe health issues and the boy was going to have to withdraw and attend public school. He was very valuable to the athletic program at MTCS and the work/study was set up for him then to keep him there.

As for Maryville/ Alcoa reamrk made, I was told this directly from an Alcoa parent. That was how they would be able to live in Knoxville and attend AlcoaM. So why would he lie? Maybe it is only for Alcoa then?

You're still wrong, but you can think what you want.

  2. Ever win anything significant? Just curious?

They beat Maryville a few times & from what I'm told by my mom (she graduated from there in '74) was that Everett wasn't a good team on a regular basis. They had some years when they were good every now & then, but never any real consistent success.

Bobby Nick, Judge Brewer, & Avron Cosby are some of the stars Everett had who made some noise back in the mid 70's though. I'm sure a few people in Blount County will recognize those names.

  3. Coming out of Maryville, I won't go as far as saying the coaches there discourage it, but I will say they're not too crazy about guys wrestling either. I fell that they're really ignorant to the fact that most wrestlers who play football excel more often times than not. As a DB, wreslting helped me learn how to fight off blocks & tackle properly. Otherwise, weighing in at 135 lbs my Sr. year would have gotten me killed & I probably would have never seen the field as a player that size.

Looking at the NFL, I can name a ton of guys who were top notch wrestlers. Troy Aikman, Ray Lewis, Scott Wells, Roddy White, Fred Weary, Stephen Neal, Lorenzo Neal, Tiki & Ronde Barber, Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott, Mike & Bob Golic, Bo Jackson, Warren Sapp, etc. etc. etc.

My coach at Maryville (Hammontree) wasn't all that crazy about me wrestling & cutting weight, but he was real quick to try to get our heavywieght to come out for football. According to our HW, Hammontree tried to get him to stop wrestling altogether after his Jr. year to focus solely on football. Of course he said no & quit football soon after that. I would say that was definitely a good choice on his part as he took 3rd place in the state tournament his Sr. year in an extremely stacked heavyweight class...

  4. First of all parents are donating all the money, so I guess they are pretty happy with how things are going.

Second of all we up graded our coach when we replaced the last one. Just like we up graded our competition when we went to 5A (while playing in a mostly 6A district)

    Meadows an upgrade?? That's hilarious...

  6. The NCAAs are all about guts and heart and fight and who wants its more. The winner is not always the most talented wrestler.

-- UTC wrestler Dean Pavlou on wrestling at the NCAA Championship

The clock in the Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling room Thursday afternoon showed eight days and 16 hours and change until the opening whistle of the start of the 82nd annual NCAA D-I Wrestling Championship next Thursday in St. Louis

With 22,000 dedicated and rabid wrestling fans watching and cheering at Scottrade Center, 330 D-I talented wrestlers battle for the title of NCAA champion in 10 weight classes.

And UTC coach Heath Eslinger has five Mocs in the hunt.

Five excited wrestlers – Nick Soto (133), Dean Pavlou (149), Daniel Waddell (157), Brandon Wright (165) and Levi Clemons (174) – in the mix, ready to don the UTC blue and gold singlets.

“The five of us are ready to go and we all believe we have a chance to do something special at the NCAAs,†said UTC junior Dean Pavlou.

“Wrestling in the NCAAs for the first time two years ago was the biggest stage I had ever been on,†said the two-time Southern Conference champion.

The former two-time state champ from Bradley Central went two and out, losing to eventual fifth place finisher Torsten Gillespie (Edinboro), 10-0, and then pinned by Glenn Shober (Navy) in the wrestlebacks.

“Fifteen thousand screaming fans and I was a little star struck with the whole thing and I had this foggy feeling,†stated Pavlou who faces No.6 Tyler Nauman (Pittsburgh) in the round of 32 next Thursday.

But Pavlou believes 2012 will be different.

“I lost in the Southern Conference finals a year ago and have focused for an entire year on making it back to the NCAAs.

“I have trained eight years for this. I am focused and prepared and while this is a special moment it is also just another seven minute match.â€

While Pavlou will have another shot at the NCAAs next year this is it for fifth year senior Brandon Wright.

“Eleven days and we will see who is the best,†said Wright the two-time SoCon champ who also went two and out in 2011. “The key is knowing that our coaches have us ready and we are peaking at the right time.â€

15-Year War: According to coach Eslinger the NCAAs are the end of a 15 year war for many of the wrestlers.

“A lot of these guys in the tournament have been wrestling since grammer school, so it’s been a long grind and this is the last battle. We will see who is ready.â€

Wright went on to say, “Others might just show up, but we are excited knowing that the NCAAs are a huge, huge deal and anything can happen.â€

If winning the Southern Conference last weekend is any indication of Wright’s focus, then he should make some noise next week.

The former Houston High School (Memphis) two-time state champion upset 15th ranked and defending SoCon champion Kyle Blevins (Appalachian State), 3-2, in double overtime, in the finals.

Wright opens with David Cheza of Michigan State, while Blevins (34-6), who received an at-large bid, meets No.6 Michael Evans of Iowa in the round of 32.

A win by Wright in the opener will most likely put him against No.1 seed and 2011 NCAA runner-up David Taylor of Penn State in the round of 16.

What's Next: For Pavlou, he has his senior year to look forward to … the two-time national scholar athlete (3.61 GPA) is an Exercise Science major and would like to work in the corporate fitness world and possibly coach wrestling.

For Wright, he graduates in May – 3.3 GPA and three-time national scholar athlete – and will work for his father’s company – Wright Construction – in Memphis.

If possible, he would like to open a Wright Construction Company branch in the Scenic City … “I have made some Iifelong friendships while at UTC and would love to live in Chattanooga one day.â€

149 – Dean Pavlou (Jr., 20-9) faces No.6 Tyler Nauman (Pittsburgh, Sr., 27-5) ... Pavlou has won five in a row and 9 of the last 10 headed into the NCAAs ... NCAA qualifier as a freshman by winning the SoCon title also at 149 ... Nauman is a four-time Eastern Wrestling League champ, the first in Pitt wrestling history to do so ... a 2010 NCAA All-American (5th) ... never lost an EWL dual match of conference tournament match.

165 – Brandon Wright (Sr., 21-9) meets David Cheza (Michigan State, Sr., 15-10) ... The Wright-Cheza winner faces the No. David Taylor-Corey Lear winner on Thursday night ... Taylor is 27-0 and was NCAA runner-up in 2011 at 38-1 as a freshman .. .. Wright has won six in a row and 13 of last 15 ... Cheza finished 8th in the Big 10 tournament ... was a 2011 NCAA qualifier.

Saturday: A look at Nick Soto, Daniel Waddell and Levi Clemons

Was awesome seeing those guys last weekend bring it home to Chatt town. Feel really bad for Manny though as he should have been joining them in St. Louis...

    CHATTANOOGA STRONG!!!

  7. I don't know what Oak Ridger's you speak of, but this Oak Ridger never belittled Maryville's success at the lower levels..I always knew they would be good at the high classes..Don't let a few fans who may have said that make you lump all OR fans together..On the other hand, Maryville's success against Oak Ridge recently wont always be this way...It has to come to an end sooner or later..All good and great things eventually end, so when OR "finally" beats yall, that comment may come back to haunt you ;) But, i have always respected Maryville, and i thought most Maryville fans respected us..

We do, because it wasn't so long ago that you guys used to pound us every year during the annual pre season scrimmage game. Our starters could hang neck & neck with you guys (as you & I have talked about before), but once it got to the 2nd stringers it was OVER... :roflolk:

  8. No there have been very good QBs at CAK. Epperly was very very good. High is the first great one. Every CAK QB has played at least one season of college football. Austin Peay, Western Carolina, UT twice (one walk on and one preferred walk on), and Princeton respectively. Where have the last few Maryville QBs gone before Patton? GQ has a way of making players look like studs but very few (I can't remember any outside of C. Thompson, T. Maples, C. Stewart and now Guillermo and Robinette) have had a shot at a big time school. I've obviously watched that CAK title game and I can only remember 1 instance in which a receiver outplayed a DB for a 50/50 ball too... I think this is a circle argument so I will stop but I do find people's opinions (when they're not bashing 17 or 18 year old kids) very fun to read. Last thing I'll say is I really do not believe for a second that Robinette has more physical tools outside of his height than High. High is an accomplished runner but is a pass first QB whereas I wouldn't necessarily list Robinette in that same category and High completed 74% of 484 pass attempts, which along with his other stats, give him the 7th or 8th best passing season in high school football history. Yes, CAK has produced good QBs but there's a reason none of them have ever gotten even close to what High was able to do this year, because he's the best CAK has had, and the best the PrepXtra area has seen in a very long time.

Maybe a few folks should pick up on the fact that I said I hope High does well, so I'm not entirely bashing him. I simply stated he's not as good as Patton & YES I did plan on stirring the pot with this thread. That's what CoachT is for, right?

In regards to players from Maryville going to D1 schools, Aaron Douglas, Brad Hilshire, Chuck Prugh, Nick Black, Gary Tucker, Brent Burnette, Isaac Simerly, & a few others come to mind who you seemed to have left out.

As far as Maryville QB's, you can't forget Toki McCray. As a Mr. Football runner up, he went to NC State & was projected to start as a RS Freshman after Jamie Barnett graduated. Unfortunately his HC got canned right after losing their season finale to UNC, the school brought in Chuck Amatto from FSU, & then they signed Phillip Rivers who came out of high school as a Sr. to participate in spring practice. The 2 battled it out for the starting QB role under the watchful eye of Norm Chow for 2 weeks, but there aren't many QB's better than Rivers even on the NFL level so we know who won that battle. McCray went on to transfer to Eastern Kentucky & did just fine over there.

  9. Pepvol, Swipes, & Strongx... Thank you guys!! These jokers don't realize just how little Patton got to show his ability this year. Maybe they need to go back & see some of the other QB's he beat out to get to the Elite 11 camp... I guarantee High won't even get a sniff of that camp.

  10. Fort Campbell is hosting open mats from 6:30-8:00 pm Tuesday and Thursday nights. We will cover Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Please bring your USA cards!!

If you have any questions please contact Anthony Shingler 931-980-1583 or anthony.shingler@gmail.com

You should call the Otero boys, I'm sure they would be happy to bring their team there...

  11. My thoughts are I have NO IDEA who and what you are talking about. Also I do not know the other 'site' you reference. <_<

The title is self explanatory. Is Charlie High a better QB than Patton Robinnette? Since Maryville gave your school a beat down in the last few play off match ups, I would imagine you would say Patton is the better QB...

BTW - The other site is GVX247

  12. Yes, He was in the same grade i was in, i played with him. He was a special athlete. He placed in the top 5 in the decathlon in the whole state his senior year, that tells you how athletic a person is right there. Him, along with Harrison Smith (Catholic) have probably been the best i have seen. Smith won the decathlon his senior year, pretty impressive.

I covered him, but his weakness was his hands. Bohannon was definitely the star of the team that year & both were a good offensive tandem. My Sr. year he was in the top 3 in the decathlon with Charles McTorry out of Nashville-Overton & Tim Bell out of Maryville.

  13. I wish it was this way. No matter what the private schools say, they're the reason this was split in the 1st place (McCallie anyone??). It was nice to see all of the schools under one championship format when I was in high school. The Baylors, McCallies, & Father Ryans of the world competed with us & it made for a much more competitive state tournament. I think this crap they have now is watered down & the champions will have to deal with the question of whether or not they're really were the best in the state.

When matched up against each other in the finals (public vs private) the last 4-5 years before the split, the public schools won about 60% of the time. Obviously teams like Baylor & FR were at the top of the food chain in private school division, but the public schools like Overton, Cleveland, Bradley Central, Red Bank, & Soddy Daisy flip-flopped being the top public school programs. Now, we won't get to see great rivalries that took part at state like Red Bank-Father Ryan or Bradley Central-Baylor anymore. Seeing matches like Brian Provezano (Red Bank) vs Kevin Baltz (Father Ryan) in the finals where both crowds despised each other will never happen again & it's a darn shame...

Regardless, Tennessee wrestling will always been seen as inferior amongst other states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, & even Georgia as they have a better format for determinng their champions than our messed up format we have now.

  14. Coaches, wrestlers, parents, and fans,

Good luck as you compete this weekend in the State Tournmanent. I just wanted to remind you that Chattanooga will be hosting the Southern Conference Tournament on Saturday, March 3rd. Come out and see some great wrestling with a lot less stress on you. We want Chattanooga fans there in full force as we seek to win our 27th Conference Title. I hope to see you here!

    Chattanooga Strong

I will be there or I will be square!! I'll be coming down with some of my other "Mark Leen era" teammates out of Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, & Idaho! We do have a question though, what's the best way to get tickets? At the gate or is there a way we can order online?

Good luck Heath & GO MOCS!!

  15. With a little lull until the states, thought I would see who's still hitting the mats after high school.

    This year I've seen:

Daniel Bauke - Air Force Acad.

    Alex Manley - Stanford

    Dean Pavlov- UTC

    Frankie Morgan -King

    Jeremy Miller - King

    Landon Hall- Limeston

    Blake Ridenour- Newberry

    Nick Shields ETSU

    Logan Ridenour ETSU

I know I've missed a bunch, MTSU does a good job fielding local talent who else is out there ?

A bunch of Maryville/Blount County boys right there, I definitely like that!
