  1. Harlow was more gifted look at what he did 2-2-1 in NCAAs won the AAUs ... beat ben peterson in a federation tourney

world silver Tblisi bronze 5x Mid South champ at St. Andrews had never wrestled until the 8th grade lettered in ftball and baseball as well.

no one can match or come close to the world medals.

    b.b.b.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here on who's more gifted (McTorry vs Harlow) in a major way. Charles was a 3 sport athlete & was recognized as one of the most athletic wreslters to ever come through the Nebraska wrestling program. He won high school nationals as a Senior, ran close to a 10 second 100 meter dash & won the state title there, beat out a future 3 time SEC high jump champion to win the state high jump title as a Sr., & was one of the highest scoring decathlon champions in TN history. I guarantee you Charles would destroy Harlow in almost every athletic competition known to man.

Now let me clarify, just because I said McTorry was more gifted doesn't make him a better wrestler. Harlow has better wrestling credentials no doubt, but you have to account that Harlow wrestled during an era where there weren't as many great athletes as there were in McTorry's time. That said, there's no way Harlow could match up athletically with McTorry in a million years...

  2. 97-98 TC football teams would have competed with ANY school in the state. hands down. Year in and year out no chance, but on the right year when the stars align TC puts out a lot of talent.

Sorry, but that year they would have gotten hammered by either Melrose, Riverdale, Pearl Cohn, or Maryville. Especially Pearl, that team would have destroyed Trousdale. John Henderson, Reggie Ridley, Santonio Beard, etc, etc, etc... It would have been so bad they would have been forced to look at insituting the mercy rule much almost a decade sooner than they did... Wouldn't be surprised if they hung 100 on them

  3. For all of you coaches (both professional & part time), here is a good story as well as a product you guys should check out. You may have heard that UT hired a new special teams coach who used to coach at UNC & the Buffalo Bills. In between coaching for the Tar Heels & the NFL, he developed a Play Book app for the iPad.

According to the site, 1stDown Technologies works for all levels of coaching looking to gain an advantage in the profession. Instead of carrying around laminted cards & having folders all over the place, the app allow users to have access to a ton of play & schemes right at their fingertips. Per the web page... "The mission is to help coaches at all levels spend more time developing football players and less time consumed with designing plays. The vision is to provide an application that organizes passing game ideas in a manner that saves coaches their most valuable commodity - time."

From experience the free download is pretty cool & works well, but for any coach out there I can definitely see this thing helping take you to the next level & being a must have!

  4. BB

Charles was 211-16 overall and his senior year he was 64-0.

Are you talking about Charles McTorry? I wasn't sure what his career record was, but I know at least 3 of those career losses came to Marquis(sp?) Nelson out of Memphis Kirby. If I'm not mistaken, Nelson beat Charles 3 times McTorry's Jr. year.

  5. Most wins in a high school season ?

from what I have been told, Charles McTorry (Overton) had 58 as a senior in 1996 ... I think that is a state high ..

    anyone else close ..?

    b.b.b.

McTorry is probably the most physically gifted wresler to ever come out of TN in my opinion. Good guy too, had the pleasure of wrestling with him at a few Freestyle tournaments & hanging out with the other PAL guys from the Nashville area way back when. Wish he would have joined my class at UTC instead of going to Nebraska though, but I doubt you could find anyone as dominant in TN as he was that year...

  6. Cleveland's 1993 team was awesome. I remember that 70-28 beatdown. I went to Nashville and watched Cleveland beat Brentwood Academy 26-21. Best game I ever seen.

I will tell you a team that had a great shot of being an all time juggernaught. The 2002 Maryville Rebel team. Had TJ Brock played at Maryville his senior year and Alex Rouse not got hurt that team would have been unreal. Plus Maryville had other injuries that would have killed and destroyed most teams. It was just a small nuisance for Maryville that year. Maryville still went 15-0 and won state that year. That is why in my opinion the 2002 Maryville team is Maryville's best ever.

They were good, but the 1998 team is definitely the best hands down.

  7. I just stated facts in my last post there Mr. I think I know everything. You are correct I do not live in Nashville but FYI there are other private schools besides in Nashville FACT! FACT Private Schools Recruit! Like i've stated before I know of friends that were recruited to play sports at a D2 private schools FACT. FACT Maryville is ranked higher than Ensworth in every approved pole. Your throwing out stuff that is from back in the 70's. Could the privates beat them back then? maybe Could they beat them now? Maybe. Why the TSSAA created D2 was because of an unfair advantge of recruiting players. If all rules were the same as public and private schools there would be no D2. Just don't get on here running your mouth when 1. You don't know anything if you think private schools don't recruit. 2. Your buddy at MBA that laughed at this goes to a school that got caught for CHEATING.

Swipes, BIGANUT74 is just stupid & we'll have to accept it. I just posted FACTS for him & his argument was I had none. I DID live in Nashville, have a ton of friends & teammates who went through the private system, & yet he still says I don't have any facts. They may not give all of them full rides, but trust me they get something to come there.

As a matter of fact, I talked to one today at lunch who's related to Rico Watson out of Ensworth. He said knows FOR A FACT that Rico was recruited to Ensworth & Corn was as well. Both of them played for his son's Jr. Pro teams in Murfreesboro growing up & Ensworth was currently after another relative of his from Blackman.

I will say this though, I'm not going to fault a kid for wanting to go to a private school even if meant making a few sacrifices to make it happen. Most of them agreed that their public schools weren't as "safe" so to speak as Maryville or Alcoa but if they were they probably would have stuck closer to home.

  8. . Ok make corn elder run the ball with one arm behind his back for being from murfreesboro since the privates recruit. It's all you got when you don't have facts and you have this wrong too... The private schools do not recruit kids to play... Parents search out a good school for their kids just like they do in maryville because you guys have one of the best public schools on the state education wise. People move to maryville for the town, jobs the education, football ... People look at the private schools for the same reason. This has been hashed over and over and over again on here. My kids are zoned for Hillsboro. It's not a bad school but there is problems there. All of my kids are athletes and go to private schools and my wife and I made that sacrifice. I grew up 100 percent public my whole life ... So I get it alright. No one from Brentwood academy, Ensworth or MBA never knocked on my door and asked me to consider their schools. Not once have I ever been approached by anyone. People move to Williamson county for the schools too ... I don't get your point. This post was started GQ or Ricky bowers and 99 percent of the responders are maryville biased. So I thought I would stick up for Ricky and throw down some facts that people forget. Maryville and Alcoa are good teams but don't tell me GQ or Rankin would have won 8 or 9 state championships if the privates were in 6a or 5a or 4 a or wherever you play.

FACTS ARE that there are private schools are already in the public division, but since they recruit they have what's called a "multiplier", ask your "coach friend" about that one. FACTS ARE BA has lost more championships than they've have won against public schools. Close to 60% of the time a public school was the one beating them on the field. FACT IS YES that they have lower enrollment #'s becasue they're a private school, but a majority of the student bodies there wouldn't be zoned for that school if they were in the public system.

You say you're family is zoned for Hillsboro & you sent them private. I can believe that, wouldn't blame you at all. 3 of my best friends (all former D1 athletes) played for & were recruited to Father Ryan. 2 of them lived in Paragon Mills close to Harding Place & the other all the way out in Wilson County. None of them sure would have been zoned for Father Ryan, but 90% of the kids at Maryville & Alcoa are at least zoned for those 2 schools. The ones who aren't in the city at least live in the same county & 9 times out of 10 live closer to the city school than the others anyway.

All of you guys should be giving thanks to McCallie for wrestling recruiting as well as BA for football recruiting & THAT'S A FACT. The backbreaker was McCallie's violation causing a delay of the 1995 TSSAA State wrestling tournament. That screw up directly affected more schools than any previous violation in the history of the TSSAA & led the drum beat for splitting the systems altogether. It led to more resentment between the schools, watered down the public division cutting out at least 2-3 good programs for each sport, & usually gave the private schools a sorry excuse of a champion who faced only a handful of worthy challengers to the title.

Face it though, private schools always have & always will recruit, if they wanted to be under the same system they could man up & follow Knox Catholic & CAK's lead, & NONE OF THE SCHOOLS (public & private) would have as many titles as they have now. All it takes is simple math to figure that one out.

  9. Swipes...don't waste your time. This guy is wayyyyy too smart for us Maryville gobbers.

You're exactly right. It's not like Ensworth can't pull a Knox Catholic & decide to play in D1 for a change. CAK moved took the multiplier & move on to D1 too, but schools like Brentwood Academy & McCallie are the reasons why TSSAA split the whole system up in the 1st place.

You could go on & on about this public vs private BS. I hear it all the time with private school friends who went to schools like Father Ryan, Baylor, CBHS in Memphis, all over. Comparitively speaking, the only school with a lengthy tradition like a Maryville & or Alcoa would be Brentwood Academy. Baylor's rarely won it, Ensworth hasn't been around long enough to be considered, & MBA's run seemed to fizzle out now that Ensworth's the big dog in D2. Regardless, even though the claim can be made that Brentwood Academy has been to more championship games than everyone, they've lost more than everyone too & still haven't won as many as Maryville or Alcoa.

The records they currently have against each other (Maryville vs Private Schools & Alcoa vs Private Schools) is in Maryville & Alcoa's favor. I think it would come out that way now given they played every year. With all of that being said, there's still no way Bowers is as good a coach as Quarles. Bowers will always have the easier path to a state title & still won't win near as many as GQ will win when all is said & done.

  10. I've been working behind the scenes with Karla & David Douglas on establishing a scholarship fund for students of Maryville High School in Aaron's name. Aaron was a friend of mine & after attending his funeral I approached Karla about the idea & they were all for it! The family has been speaking with the current administration & the initial feedback is there will be 2 scholarships set up in his name. One will be for athletics of course, but the other will be for drama/art students as Aaron was very involved in the arts himself.

That being the case, I'm working with Karla on raising funds for these awards & the plan is to have them in place for this year's Senior class to be awarded at May's graduation ceremony. The criteria for the recipients will be established in the coming weeks & these grants will go to both athletic & non athletic students at Maryville looking to continue their education in college. Any feedback on helping establish guidelines for the awards & donations towards this fund is greatly appreciated.

  11. Trousdale with 8 state championships (1922, 1972, 1990, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2005 and 2008) only a few other teams can claim more state football titles in Tennessee than Trousdale county. The championship teams in 1990, 1997, 2005 and 2008 all went undefeated. The fact that they have made the playoffs every year since 1988 is just another testament to the program's consistency. Since 1990 the Trousdale County Yellow Jackets have either won the championship in 1A or lost to the eventual champion 18 out of the 21 seasons.

The 1997 undefeated championship team should be considered one of the best teams in Tennessee high school football history. That team still holds the record for points scored in a season with 733 points through 15 games. The biggest stat from that season is the fact that they outscored their opponents 733-63. That means that over the course of the season they only allowed an average of 4 points a game while scoring nearly 50 points a game! The 1997 Trousdale County Yellow Jackets capped off a great season with a 45-0 win in the state championship against Clarksville Academy.

You cannot have a great program without great coaching and the Trousdale County Yellow Jackets have had some of the best coaches throughout the years. The Satterfield family has become synonymous with coaching in middle Tennessee. Clint Satterfield will likely be remembered as one of the greatest coaches in 1A and Tennessee high school football in general. In 24 years of coaching at Trousdale County coach Clint Satterfield amassed 260 wins and 5 1A Tennessee football championships.

Trousdale County has had some impressive years, but mentioning them amongst the best teams ever is a farce. They would get squashed by a number of other great teams if they weren't playing in the lowest classification in the state. For that matter, Any teams in 1A or 2A shouldn't even be mentioned. Does that take away from their success, no... However, lumping them in with "best teams" all time is ridiculous.

  12. The Mr. Footbal award really? Come up with something original at least. I'm not bashing either kid because they are both top notch. However, please use some facts in your posts and I won't call you out. Your untrained eye said Jelks "wasn't all that" but several big time college coaches that know more than you disagree.

We'll see. Maybe he'll turn out better than that other kid from HC whom a lot of other coaches thought was good too... Teague anyone?

  13. I bet that Rankin has beat Quarles more than any other head coach at any other school. If you swapped Rankin and Quarles and let Quarles coach at Alcoa and Rankin at Maryville who would win. Cant take no assistents just swap head coaches.

Quarles would win hands down. If he had Alcoa's talent, it would really be sick what he could do. As far as your point on Rankin beating Quarles more than any other coach, you're partially right. Rankin would be tied at 2 wins with the coach from Knox Central (Helton) & the coach from Morristown West (not sure of his name).

  14. Submission grappling would be probably as close to mma as you will ever get. As a sanctioned USA Grappling Club and one of only a VERY few in all of the 5 state SE Region I have ran a Submission Grappling HS tournament. It is sanctioned under FILA World rules and it relatively safe. They do not allow any neck wrenches, small joint manipulation as well as knee bar or ankle locks. They want to protect HS kids from long term damage to any critical joint (mainly the neck). As of now under the USA Grappling (USAW)you can run submission grappling tournaments all the way down to 7 years old. There are a number of subgrap orgs out there running tournament (abudabi-NAGA, etc) that are running tournaments but they all have different rules and interpretation. FILA is unifying rules on a global level to have a unified set of rules that no matter where you grapple in the world everyone is participating in events with the same rules and scoring.

This system could be used in HS and I would support it. I would however have to not support full MMA. Part of the training regiment for MMA requires strong maturity and the ability to spar in controlled sparring scenarios and HS kids for the most part don't posses this ability.

    Just my thoughts.

    Coach Trick

    Lions Pride Grappling

Now that's the type of feedback I'm talking about. I knew there were tournaments like the one you mentioned, but I didn't know anyting else about them. Before the Frank Mir-Roy Nelson fight in UFC a few months ago, they showed footage of the 2 squaring off in a grappling match with Nelson coming out on top. Obviously it was different in the UFC bout.

  15. You obviously know more than the coaches at Bama, Stanford, UT, Missouri, Miss. St, Ole Miss, Illinois & about 10 other D-1 schools. Maybe you should be coaching instead of posting your knowledge on CoachT.

I'm saying he's not better that Guillermo. Who won the AAA Mr. Football Lineman award again?? Oh yeah, Guillermo did thank you.

And don't act like I'm the only one who offers up opinions on here & come up with something original...

    <_<

  16. OK ... here's my rant on local recruiting:

The summer before Zach Sharp's senior season at Maryville, he was at a UT camp. At the conclusion of the day, Coach Dooley actually spent some time one on one with him watching him kick. Dooley kept placing the football in different spots on the field and having Zach kick it. He hit from every place Dooley put the ball.

Zach had already been on the national radar -- having finished in the top 2 or 3 kickers at several big time camps. He would end up breaking just about every kicking record in the history of MHS and breaking at least one state record (most consecutive pat's). He would also be named Mr. Football (kicker division) his senior year.

I know there are people more qualified than me to rate prospects, but I think everybody and his brother in the East Tennessee area at least knew that Zach was an incredible kicker with huge upside. Yet Dooley and staff WOULD NOT offer him a scholarship his freshman year.

He just finished his freshmen year at Tennessee Tech and guess what? He was a lot better kicker (as a true freshman) than Tennessee's kicker. And kicking, unlike other positions, is one of those positions you can compare across the board regardless of level of competition.

That was a miss on the part of UT's staff ... I don't believe anyone can argue that.

One other thing ... I can't help but wonder if the running back from Powell will end up being "Randall Cobb #2" for Kentucky. Don't mean he'll be the same type player, I mean that he'll end up being an NFL caliber star that UT let get away????

AMEN on Sharp! I also think they missed the boat on Tyson & Warren out of Alcoa last year. Tyson especially, he is a blocking machine at FB.

  17. It would be very unwise to have a school-sponsored MMA team.

Here are just some of the reasons:

    1) Coaching Knowledge...the reason that there are MMA centers is because "mixed martial arts" dictates having knowledge in mutliple martial arts, such as jij-jitsu, muay thai, tae-kwon do, wrestling, etc... We would be ill-advised to have some teacher step up to be High School X's MMA Coach.

    2) The liability would be insane. The first time (as someone earlier stated) Jimmy decides he is too manly to tap out from a Kimura and his forearm snaps in half, the school would be sued and rightly so.

    3) Learning MMA requires a level of respect and honor, which unfortunately is often-times not taught in high school sports, which coupled with #1 and #2 is a very dangerous mixture.

    4) High School sponsored MMA would decimate high school wrestling, not support it. Wrestling should be used as a gateway to MMA, as most of the top MMA fighters either have their first "martial art" as wrestling, jiu-jitsu, or boxing. Learning the fundamentals of wrestling lays the foundation for smoother transition into other fighting styles and allows individuals to protect themselves more readily. If MMA was offered as an alternative many young boys would turn to it INSTEAD of wrestling because they see how "cool" it is on television, not realizing that those guys are on television because they first learned how to control their craft on the wrestling mat.

Good points.. I'll always chose wrestling over MMA b/c it was/has been my 1st love so to speak. It does offer the best base from which to work with in MMA, but I think all kids should try to learn as many disciplines as they can.

Like a lot kids I took karate (Isshin-ryū to be exact) early & didn't get into wrestling until later in school. Wrestling taught me better body control & how to use it in other sports (football, soccer). Striking is a different animal, but learning how to strike & having wrestling skills is much easier that knowing how to strike & learning wrestling skills. No question

  18. Possible, but not likely anytime soon. The general public still has many misconceptions about mixed martial arts, such as it being "no holds barred", or just cage fighting. Also, it is difficult enough to have the sport sanctioned by athletic commissions for professionals, so I do not see them allowing it for high school athletes. Besides the fact that it would probably not get sanctioned, there would probably not be enough participants. Wrestling is the closest sport to mixed martial arts, and it is lucky to have half the participation levels that a sport such as football has. There are too many mommies and daddies that would not be in favor of seeing a high school students arm broken because he was too proud to tap out in front of his girlfriend. It would be cool, though.

It would be very cool. I didn't think about the breaking limbs part, but I did factor in if a head gear would affect chokes at all. I know there are different grappling tournaments out there that are run like a wrestling tournament. I've never been to one, but I would be interested to see what kind of rules they have in place.

It would be interesting to see a dual meet too if MMA was a part of high school sports. There was one fight federation that had actual team competitions like dual meets, but I can't remember the name of the league...
