  1. With the success of wrestlers in the world of MMA, I've often day dreamed if there would be any chance of amateur MMA making it in high school athletics one day?? I think it could be "do-able" given the fact that my parents' high school had amateur boxers back in the day (early 70's to be exact). I'll have to go back in their year book to make sure boxing was sanctioned by the school as an official sport, but they were 2 boxers featured in their annual none the less.

That said, I think that it could possibly be done if A: headgears were used just like they are in amateur boxing, B: the MMA season didn't take away from the existing high school wrestling season, & C: all 50 states officially sanctioned MMA as a legitimate sport.

I was lucky enough to be wrestling in high school when a future MMA great out of Memphis (Quinton Jackson) wrestled for Raleigh-Egypt. A future teammate of mine at UTC (Brian Provezano) beat "Rampage" in the 2nd round at the state tournament that year, but imagine what kind of following MMA would have if you could follow fighters like you do other athletes in different sports...

  2. I would certainly agree with you on that. All the aforementioned players have bright futures ahead of them. Each are very good at what they do. For what it's worth UT would offer Guillermo in a minute if they thought they had a chance. Unfortunately they don't though. I really hate that. He reminds me a lot of Scott Wells.

Being a former D1 wrestler myself, I remember Scott Wells back in his high school days putting the hurt to some heavywieghts during his career. STRONG AS heck!! Two of the strongest wrestlers to come through TN that I can remember both played football at UT too. Will Bartholomew(sp?) was a beast on the mat & another football Vol great. I didn't get to watch his brother Ben wrestle any at all when he was at MBA, but if he's anything like Will then I won't be surprised to see him get a chance to bust some heads as a blocking FB in the NFL after next season.

I don't know if Jay has that kind of strength coming out of high school like those guys, but as far as him being a top flight center I will agree with you there.

  3. I LOVE Guillermo as a football player but, for you to think that he would be able to play Tackle in college is absolutely nuts! His feet are not good enough to block the likes of a Jadeveon Clowney type player. As an interior run blocker I take Jay 10 times out of 10. However, in college off the edge speed is the name of the game.

On a separate note, don't start about message board grammar. It just puts of the impression you are desperate to be right about something that everyone else could care less about.

I'm not desperate about anything, but maybe I should have clarified that Jay could have played HS ball on any spot on the O line he wanted.

  4. Maybe I should have put PROSPECT. I didn't know that my every word was going to be dissected like a like a doctoral thesis. I am pretty sure that Jelks is the better prospect because he has the frame and the footwork to play any of the three line positions at the next level. His agility makes him a much more interchangeable commodity than Jay which is the main reason why so many schools covented him so much. From what you "SEEN" in Guillermo, is a Center, that is all. Yes, for the love of god he is a better PLAYER NOW but, get back with me in 4 years, just trust me. Oh and I brought up Humphries because that was their number 1 target and if they continued to try to turn Jay it would have been at their expense of recruiting of him.

As a side note, in the game that Jelks "didn't impress you" HC rushed for 299 yards running behind him all night. 6.9 a carry Not that impressive though.

6.9 yards a carry against an average defense of Powell's is no great accomplishment. Jelks would have had his #### handed to him if he had played against a D Line the likes of Maryville, Whitehaven, or even Riverdale. Furthermore, if you could make more sense in your sentence "Jelks and Humphries are right now both undersized but, their measureables make them better long term prospects.", maybe people could understand you better. I'm thinking you meant "both Jelks & Humphries are undersized right now, but their measureables..." You get the picture, Mr. Thesis.

That said, Guillermo can play any spot on the line he wants to. If it wasn't for Brandon Guy lining up at tackle, I'm sure Guillermo would have been slotted over there. So to prove my point, I've SEEN enough to know that Guillermo would have been successful there too.

    :popcorneater:

  5. Out of all of that, that is all you got from that. Wow, that was nice! Truth be told Jay is probably better that Humphries RIGHT NOW but, guess what recruiting is often done on potential as well. Of course you probably already knew that. Jelks and Humphries are right now both undersized but, their measureables make them better long term prospects. I'll give you an example, Chris Donald vs Patrick Willis. How did that one turn out?

I'm not questioning you on Humphries, so I have no clue why you brought him into the equation. I'm just repeating what you said that Jelks was better than Guillermo... Isn't that what you posted?? From what I seen of him in the title game agaist Powell he wasn't all that.

And no I didn't "already know that"...

  6. Ok, after reading the story on Yahoo about the top high school teams in the country, I noticed that Maryville finished #15 according to Rivals & Ensworth finished #39. However, Rivals quoted this "Ensworth may have the best coach in the entire state with Ricky Bowers." In the words of The Miz from WWE fame... REALLY?!?!?! REALLY?!?!?!?

I would bet my house that Bowers would not even be able to carry GQ's jock strap in a coaching comparison. I know the DII idiots are going to have something to say about this one, but there's no comparison... Period! Let the games begin!!!

  7. I would take anything Brnet Hubbs has to say with a grain of salt. He is still butt hurt because he hasn't had the access to the program he feels he is entitled to since "The Great Pumpkin" was fired. He has gained a reputation by some to now throw you know what against the wall and see if it sticks. Also he takes every opportunity to take subtle jabs at the staff since he has been distanced a bit. The fact is that Jay is a great player and when he commited to Clemson it was over and everyone knew it. So why should the staff continue to reach for him when they have a less than 1% chance of getting him and there, are much better players available at the time, like D.J. Humphries and Jelks. They haven't signed a OL in this class yet and won't unless an absolute must take comes their way. My point here is that the coaches perspective and what Hubbs reports may not necessarily be the same thing. In this case I promise you it is not. Dooley and staff know Jay can play at UT and be a valuable asset. However, If everyone in high school waited around on the slim chance that the prettiest girl in school will go to prom with them, there will be a lot of lonely boys on prom night. Just saying.

I can see Humphries being better, but Jelks?!?!? If you believe that he's better that Guillermo then I want some of what you've been smoking on..

  8. Harless left to attend school at ETSU, nobody ran anyone off. We have filled his position, thank you for all of your interest.

As a former UTC Moc & MTSU wrestling alum like our mutual buddy Hamm Bone, a Facebook friend of yours, & a Maryville High graduate... Keep it up!! Definitely pulling for Logan & Nic, but also pulling for Hamm to lose a few pounds too. I'd say both of us need to go on the BIGGEST LOSER some time soon...

  10. Just my opinion, which it seems that's all this board has this year, I say Grayson Mullin from EFT.

Has dominated every rassler which has included a couple big boys from Atlanta. I see him in top 3 this year at 145 with the top step in reach.

    Be careful my friend.....

Ps.. I also think Gary Lewis is looking pretty darn good too..

Besides the obvious team Soddy By Godddd, I hear rumbles of a team called Wilson Central laying the smack down . Chattanooga Central will walk thru the small boy div as evidence by their close lose to TBSFMAW

Shouldn't High from CAK be in another thread?? He's not a 5A-6A kid...

  12. @Professor Chaos- Milan looked really good today, didn't they? It sure does look like we'll have to disagree on that one.

@JSamson7- Last time I checked it was somewhere in the 150-160 range which I guess is pretty low compared to the IQ of a self-proclaimed genius like you.

And I will proudly say that I am a member of the 2011 State Runner-Up USJ Bruins, that I still believe is the best team in West TN (except Henry County).

    [/quote

If yours is that high, then you would be a genius. Right? Hopefully you have a membership card to prove that... I got mine.

  13. In 2008 Chase James said that Milan was the best team they played all year (CAK and Maryville included). When Rankin was asked about it he said, "Milan is definitely the 2nd best team in the state." We knew this wasn't one of our best teams. Still very young. But, this one ain't over yet.

Show me where that was said, otherwise I'm going to have to disagree with you here.

  14. @JSamson7- You are soooo right. Math and reading comprehension have always been my weaknesses in school. Could you tutor me?

@Professor Chaos- a bad Northside team that beat Liberty. And I will agree to Henry County being head and shoulders above, but not Milan.

And to everyone, this thread has nothing to do with any team in Memphis or outside West TN.

Obviously it is your weakness. Seems to me your real IQ is right up there with your Football IQ, REAL LOW.

  15. @Professor Chaos- Who are you to say South Side is not a good team?

@JSamson7- I said nothing about South Side being one of the best teams in the state. I was referring to Aurielio's comments on teams in Madison county and west Tennessee. I also didn't say anything about Mayhall being the star player of these teams, however, he would be a starter. If you could see the heart that this kid plays with to go along with his God-given talent, you could not convince me that he wouldn't start at any team in Tennessee. "Punk kid"? Ha, funny..

Again, as I explained to Fat Albert(hey hey hey), I didn't say he wouldn't start at any team, I said he wouldn't start for those 3 schools. Reading comprehension seems to escape you. To further clariphy, he wouldn't start RB at either of those 3 schools & you mentioning "ask South Side" led me to believe you think they're a decent team. I never said you thought South Side was one of the best teams in the state, but you assumed I did. Again, reading comprehension, you should consider checking it out...

Furthermore, my "punk kid" reference was assuming you're in your early 20's. If not, then I apologize. However, basic math tells me that if you think Aurielio is 40 years older than you, unless he's really (no offense Auriello ) old that would make you in your 20's. Right??

  16. Probably his résumé, considering I'm more than forty years younger than Aurielio, but obviously not his football intelligence. And BTW yes he would start there too. With whom are you associated to be able to question a 35-2 beat down of a good South Side team?

How can you even question the his football IQ when you readily admit his resume is better than yours?? Are you a coach? You sound like some punk kid that got his football IQ from playing Madden or EA Collge Football.. If that's the case & you play online, I beg you to play me in a game online to test out that theory.

Also, there's no way in Blue heck that kid would start over the current starters at Maryville, Alcoa, or Powell. Mobley at Powell may break the state single season record this year w/ a good night in the 5A title game, Prevo has started at Maryville since he was a Freshman (which has NEVER been done) & rarely plays into the 2nd half, & if not for injuries Hambrick at Alcoa would have had a monster year after rushing for a 1,000 last year while splitting time with 2 other LEGIT D1 backs.

Lastly, if you put a team like South Side against any of those 3, I can assure you the mercy rule would be in effect shortly after the 2nd quarter (especially against Maryville).

  17. so you're telling me that despite an SEC school wanting Mayhall to come play for them, that he wouldn't even start at on a high school football team in Tennessee?

Read the quote... "BTW - Mayhall would not start for schools like Maryville, this year's Powell team, Alcoa, & a few other schools I could list." I didn't say he wouldn't start for every school in TN. However, he wouldn't have started for those 3 programs I named for sure...

  18. @Aurielio- I don't need to hear your résumé. I really do not care. Your knowledge is probably the very reason you were not the head coach. Again, ask South Side (since you blatantly avoided that comment) if USJ is hard-hitting. Mayhall is in fact being looked at by several schools, including Mississippi State. Basketball on grass, ha good one.

I have to agree with Aurielio here. Not being a head coach doesn't mean he couldn't have been one. I'd venture to say his football resume is more attractive than yours...

BTW - Mayhall would not start for schools like Maryville, this year's Powell team, Alcoa, & a few other schools I could list. You want to bring up South Side, really??? :roflol:

  19. Nice post. It would help his case with some if he was not always looking for an excuse or laying blame on whomever he can. After reading the herald last night thats what I got out of it. He was trying to sneak in a jab at the previous staff every chance he could. His whining, excuses, and laying blame among what I have already witnessed is not going to get me to buy in to what he is doing here! I also noticed Eaglefan's young man not mentioned one time in the article. Like her or not her boy was a standout and a leader! Was that a coicidence? I doubt it. If a kid deserves something they need to get it!!! PERIOD!

From what I understand you guys never gave Hammontree a chance...

  20. Alcoa has also come accustom to not having a coach hang around for very long too. You gotta remember that. We went from Coach Dalton to Coach Phelps to Coach Ironside to Coach Meadows back to Coach Dalton to Coach Reid to Coach Rankin in a span of about 15 years. To a lot of schools that not much but when you consider Alcoa has racked up 9 state titles under those coaches...Its quite a feat. Most schools struggle after coaching changes. There's also a lot of alumni and former players that dont feel they should be committed to the staff at the moment because it wasnt "their" staff. I myself am guilty of it among many others. The only ties I have to the current staff is Coach Adams, none of the others were there 10 years ago so part of you says "Eh, if they go they go...we'll be fine"...At the same time I really think/wish Alcoa would find a "hometown" type guy that doesnt have a high probability to just up and run off to Georgia or a Private School. We havent had an "Alcoa guy" since Coach Phelps. I think thats one reason so many people are supportive with the possibility of Coach Nix taking over if/when the time comes. Nix, as far as I know, is a local guy and loves the area. Plus the intensity he shows on the sidelines is second to none. Seriously, I know a lot of people cant see it from the visitors side of the field but if you're ever on the home side you know what Im talking about. Coach Dalton, God rest his soul, said it best in 2001 that Alcoa needs stability at the head coaching position. 10 years later we're still needing it. If its Rankin then so be it, it its Nix thats fine too but we need someone there thats going to be there 10-15 years later and continue to improve the program.

Just my opinion....I feel like Paul Harvey.

Yes, he's been the DC since I believe Reid was coach. As for who would call the offense...Personally Id like to see Coach Henry stay behind and be an Offense Coord. He usually does the calls in the JV/Freshmen games and as a very balanced offensive mind. However, Henry is also a "Rankin guy" and I would imagine if/when Rankin does leave that Henry would probably follow him.

Nix is indeed local & he played with me at Maryville. I'm very proud of what he's accomplished as a coach there & it goes w/o saying that you don't have to be a great player to be a great coach. He wasn't a starter for us per se when he played, but he did have a really good football IQ & is certainly a good candidate to help continue the tradition at Alcoa.

That said, it would be devastating for Alcoa to replace Rankin with a coach the likes of Phelps or Meadows. Reid wasn't all that great either, but at least he got the ball rolling a little bit in regards to getting a viable off season weight program, some structured discipline, & a few other things that Alcoa should have had in place a LONG time ago...

  21. JSamson. I could care less if Catholic wins another game. If you think that GQ was as dismissive of Pemberton when the region was announced, I'd suggest you....well, you'd be wrong. Rankin is no more going Catholic than he is going back to Smith County,,,,,where he, Maynord, and oh yeah Pemberton all have roots. BTW, Catholic would never get beat by Greenback; but Heritage, now that's another matter :roflol:

Go back & check your records... Greenback & Catholic played each other on a regular basis & Greenback won convincingly every time.
