  1. Hey footballsense. I get that you care, and I truly hate it for you, the kids, and the families of all those impacted. Fact is that the AD has been posting in this thread under "CoachKCHS", and it is painfully obvious that he is as lost as an Easter egg. The feeder program had two good teams this year...some combination of 6th & 7th grade kids. The talent on those teams will not go to Catholic. The 8th grade team went 3-5, while the freshman and JV teams were not successful, and ultimately unable to field the numbers required to play.

KCHS made a decision in 2009 to deemphasize athletics. They came to believe that there was too much focus on athletics at the expense of academic and spiritual development. Pemberton was forced out within months of winning a state championship, and with 15 of 22 starters returning. He had no desire to leave and had looked forward to running his system against the “Big Boys.†He had the program on a roll, from feeder program, to strength and conditioning, to media relations, to a deep a broad network of colleges that knew that they would good kids that would contribute. Courtney, Qualres, Cummings, and Taylor all danced a jig when Pemberton left. No Wing-T, ball control, eat the clock, great pursuit angle, gang tackling, special team mistake free team to deal with.

It's over. Actually, it's been over. Good luck.

Ha! Quarles dancing a "jig" that Pemberton left. If you believe that the it's you who may have lost an Easter egg.

That Wing-T, ball control, eat the clock, blah blah blah, would have been eaten alive year after year even if he was still there. Face it, Catholic's going to go back to the days when they were getting beat by the Greenbacks of the world on a regular basis unless Rankin comes to town.

  2. Folks,

Our weekly live DNJ chats are winding down. Likely last one of the year at 7 p.m. today on dnj.com.

Unless something changes, we won't do one during the basketball season. There never was enough interest in it.

    Thanks for participating this season.

    DNJ prep editor

Is this the same paper that employs Bob Gilbert now???

  3. The problem with your story here is that Alcoa accepted Austin-East QB as a transfer this year. That isn't the only case. Check into the facts on that one. thumb[1].gif

Here are the facts on Ogg transfer.

Ogg Transfer for A-E to Alcoa

Furthermore, the open enrollment is directly correlated with the last decade of Alcoa winning it every year. They were always a good program before that.

P.S. You need to get some psychiatric help because you are way tough uptight and angry. You responded from the beginning with names, insults and derogatory comments in every response. there is really no need for that. I responded back with a sample of your type response in my post 75 in jest. Obviously, this stuff isn't for fun and past time for you.

Sorry I offended you, maybe my humor is a little too "touchy" for you. As far as Oggs goes, his family moved to Alcoa therefore making his transfer legit...

    Congratulations! :thumb:

What was your previous experience in wrestling before becoming the coach at Central?

  5. Was that the same cleveland team that beat murvil like 78-12? I saw that game and they were awesome!

I would have to vote for Murvil's 2009 team. If it wasn't for coaching, they would have won it all that year.

I agree strongx that the Maryville 2009 team was good, but I'd have to say that was one of the weakest Maryville teams to make the state title game. They overcame a lot moving up to 6A, but they got beat down by Alcoa & in the 6A title game too. Juhlin was real good that year after blowing the title game the year before against Hillsboro, but I doubt he would start over Patton now.

This year's Maryville team could go down as one of the greats for sure, but I feel Maryville's strongest team IMO is either the '98 team with Toki McCray at QB or the year that Tyler Maples was a Sr. I'm not sure the year, but having Maples, Burnette, & Douglas was real scary for opposing D's.

As far as Cleveland goes, they beat us 70-28 that year at Maryville during Hammontree's 1st year. They had legitimately 7-8 guys that ran 4.4 times, a monstrous OL, depth for days, & ran the wing T better than any team I've ever seen. They eaked out a 7-6 victory over Brentwood Academy that year in the title game, but against us they scored on 3 out the 1st 4 times they touched the ball against us that game. One Cobb twin left for 60 yards, one Cobb twin right for close to 70 yards, then the double reverse with Dante Hickey for about 75 yards was all it took. heck, even Chris Whaley's opening carry up the middle from FB went 20 yards. It was bad...

Thankfully, we tied the game up at 21-21 before they scored again right before halftime to put it 28-21. We tied it again at 28 all after half, but then they just rattled off 42 unanswered to finish us off at 70-28. Their 2nd & 3rd stringers ran up & down on our starters like they didn't even miss their starters... Definitely BRUTAL!

One of my wrestling teammates at UT Chatt played NG for those great Cleveland teams & we talked about that game a lot. He said they were pissed at half b/c we scored that many on them & he claimed there were a few Maryville fans yelling racist comments at them when they left the field for the half (I don't believe that part so much). We ended up scoring more points on them than any one else that year & Benny Monroe was really unhappy we were making him look bad in his return to Maryville. I think that the worst Maryville's ever been beaten in the modern era as far as I know... :(

  6. Dang man! Yall quit taking OR players away from us! lol We had a guy play for DB back in the early 2000's named Adonis Johnson he was originally from oak ridge...He was probably one of the best RB's they have ever had! We couldnt stop him when we played them...Also, Kyler Kerbyson for Catholic last year who plays for UT now is originally a Ridger! That Patrick guy sounds crazy dude! lol

Kevin was unreal, but again squandered his talent. I'm sure the Riverdale teams have probably had a few that could have starred for them, but unfortunate circumstances keep them from succeeding.. I know Alcoa's had their fair share too or they would have won a ton of more titles themselves. Particularly the classes in the mid to late 90's, Alcoa had the Webb brothers with youngest one being the best of the bunch (Andre). The older 2 played great as OLB for them, but Andre has to be one of the most gifted RB Alcoa's had in 20 years. He wasn't any more than 160, but with his raw speed & "Barry Sanders" like moves he was almost impossible to stop. The only player they've had since then that has Andre's kind of maneuverability might be Cobb, he was that good...

For whatever reason Andre got let go, but I bet almost every great team looses a player or 2 that doesn't fulfill their potential. It's a shame really, for every great team that gets mentioned as being the best ever, I'm sure they have a story or 2 on why they could have been ever better. For instance, imagine what Cookeville would have looked like if Eric Locke hadn't moved to Murfreesboro.

  7. Thurman Bates played for Maryville??!! Me and Thurman Bates played on the same boys club team. We both were the starting running backs. Thurman could have been one heck of a football player if he could have stayed out of trouble, but he just couldn't. Me and him used to go one on one in Oklahoma drills in boys club! We were the 2 hardest hitters on our team LOL...That is too funny man! Yes, All the Bates' in Oak Ridge are related, and they are related to the Thrift's. Antoine Thrift who was on the 91 OR team, his original last name was Bates. Me and my dad used to take Thurman home from practice every day. It was sad, he lived in a really rundown rough part of Oak Ridge, and it looked like nobody was ever home when we dropped him off. Kinda easy to see why he went down the wrong path.

Thurman was one of my best friends my Jr. & Sr. years at Maryville. He was our #2 TB & started CB on the opposite side of me during my Sr. year. He got kicked off the Monday after the Alcoa game before we played Halls & we eventually lost our starting WR/FS, OLB/WR, TB, & FB towards the end of the year due to injuries. Cleveland 3 peated that year, but I think if we were healthy there's no way we wouldn't have come back without the 1st title since '78 for Maryville. Unfortunately we lost to a team we beat down in the regular season (Smyrna) in the 2nd round at home & they barely lost to Cleveland in the semis.

That said, we had another guy from OR transfer in my freshman year you might have heard of too, Demetrius Holmes. Ring a bell?? He came in & said he had never played football in his whole life & said he only played basketball for OR growing up. Needless to say he was probably the most explosive RB Maryville has EVER had, but he also couldn't stay out of trouble & got kicked out just like Thurman. His 1st game starting for us our Freshman year against Lenoir City (keep in mind he'd only been playing football for 3 weeks before this) he had 7 carries for 205 yards! He averaged close to 200 yards a game for the rest of the year & broke at least one run for 60 yards every game. He was faster than Thurman, had better vision, & was a stronger runner after contact (if you could touch him). Just like a lot of other talented kids, he didn't pan out & was the biggest waste of talent other than one guy we had that DOMINATED Roy Howard when we scrimmaged you guys my Sophmore year.

That guy's name is Kevin Patrick & I would say he was the epitomy of a physical freak as I've ever seen one. He was 6'4 270 as a Sophmore & ran a legit 4.65!! He & I were always in the top 5 fastest kids for our grade growing up in Maryville City school system, but he was so huge it almost made it unfair for him to be that fast! He lined up at TE & DE against Roy & pretty much owned him all night our Soph year. Your head coach (Gaddis I think) came up to Coach Hammontree after the game & said he'd never seen a Soph like that & no one ever dominated Roy like that either... Sadly, he too got kicked off our Soph year right after Demetrius got booted otherwise our Sr. class would have been untouched in '95.. lol

  8. Ha! Big Roy, grew up with every one of them guys from grade school on...Oak Ridge had some unreal talent back then..Shoulda won state more then we did, to be honest.

Lol, that's funny. I ran around with a bunch of OR folks when I wrestled at UT Chatt that you might know then. Needless to say, my eyes got real wide & I actually batted down 2 passes intended for Roy when we lined up across from each other. The next year (my Sr. year) we scrimmaged you guys at OR & I was lined up against McAddley all night. Shut him down pretty easy, but Bohannon ran me over a few times like he did most folks that year.

BTW - We had one guy transfer from OR that played pretty well for us until he got kicked off after the Alcoa game my Sr. year. Thurman Bates, does that name ring a bell? I know he said he was cousins with Marcus Bates from up that way...

  9. BTW....To beat it all. Is it true that he is the highest paid public school head football coach in the state of Tennessee?? Not counting the booster money (under the table)?????? Inquiring minds want to know. O yeah does he have a car furnished too?

What coach are you talking about?? If you're talking about GQ, I don't know how much he makes, but I'm sure it's very good. He teaches Driver's Ed so I'm not sure you can consider that his car per se, but he taught Driver's Ed even before he became HC so I doubt that's a "perk" of his. I could be wrong though...

  10. They were certainly awesome. I was on the Oak Ridge team that lost to them 21-7...We were tough as nails that year and undefeated when we played Riverdale...they had just a bit more!

I remember scrimmaging OR that preseason at Maryville. I can't recall if Bohannon or McAdley(sp?) played that year, but I remember lining up as a DB across big Roy Howard from OR a few times when he split out wide from his TE spot in some formations... I thought I was about to get murdered!

That said, I'm not sure either OR or Riverdale could have beat Cleveland in 93 or 94.

  11. Thanks for the information J. I been hearing some of the same talk around these parts too. You know what they say J. If you cant walk the walk dont talk the talk. This is the way i see the sitiation. He has alot of folks around here fooled. Its amazing how Maryville has won all these championships but Olive didnt do so well there. This is Billy signing off for now.

No problem, Billy. Again, he had one good year & got us to the playoffs. However, that Maryville aquad was loaded with talent & I didn't even mention the 2 Jr's on that team that were getting heavy interest from FSU & the Gators. The one weak link would have been our O-line & with a better coach we probably still wouldn't have beat Clinton that year, but we definitley could have kept it close. It's kind of funny though that the next year we blasted Clinton & we had less talent than the tesm who Clinton beat the year before...

BTW - The head coach for Clinton all of those years just so happens to be the DC at Maryville now (Coach Gaylor). Ironic huh??

  12. Hey J Samson PLEASE tell me more. We got us a potential scandal goin on here in Tullahoma. TCATS has done spilt the beans.

He definitely thought he was a better coach than he actually is. Granted he was the 1st coach to bring Maryville back to the playoffs after we had a drought, but his offensive play calling was bad as well as his "holier than thou" attitude was fake. On the topic of foul language, I can assure you he reeled off more than his fair share of foul language statement when I was there.

As far as his coaching ability, we had the talent to go deep into the playoffs that year with a 1000 yard receiver, an all region QB, & one of the best RB's in the state that year next to Scotty Witt from Clinton (the CG runner up to Gallatin) & Travis Cozart from Lenoir City. Our RB averaged over 10 yards per carry that year, but all Olive wanted to do is run his offense the way he wanted instead of utilizing his team's strengths. When you have a thoroughbred at RB, but you keep wanting to go to your X, Y & Z backs trying to be cute, that just shows me your either arrogant, stupid, or both!

That said, when he left EVERYONE was happy & Maryville would not be where it's at today if he would have stayed there.

  13. I believe Troy Fleming's little brother is the RB for Centennial. Talked to Troy this week & he said he would be attending. I told him I'd have to pull for East TN & LC this time, but I'm sure it will be a good game. Anybody from LC know what happened to Travis Cozart?? He was a great HS running back who should have done big things at UT... :/

  14. I didn't say how BA got that good. Of course it dropped off when Carlton Flatt left. Blount County caught up after that when they went open enrollment in the greater Knoxville area counties. I see you are Geographically challenged as well.

Edit: Just for the record, I am not a B.A. fan. I think the funniest upset in history was Jasper beating them in the AA Title game in 1992. B.A. left in such a hurry they forgot the silver ball. :roflol:

They have never had "open enrollment". The only system they used to have was allowing Blount County students who wanted to attend the city schools the ability to pay tuition to go there. Both schools have become so over crowded now that they don't allow that practice any more, but people like you who don't chek their facts seem to think it still exists. I could go on & on about folks like you that think they know it all when your facts are clearly wrong, but to save this thread from becoming childish I won't stoop to that level. At least when I give the facts, I make sure I'm right so I don't look stupid... Maybe you should go back to clubbing at the techno bar & blow some Vic's in your eyes then maybe you'll see straight!

  15. Brentwood Academy has finished in the Top 10 of the National Sports News Service Top 25 final rankings three times: 1988 (#8), 1995 (#8), and 1996 (#3). Also Brentwood Academy has finished in the Top 10 of the USA Today Super 25 three times: 1988 (#8), 1995 (#6), and 1996 (#7). BA could be mentioned in this discussion for sure. One of there teams has to be in the top 3 of the best teams in history of Tennessee high school football.

BA Football has a strong history.

State championship in Class A competition after only four years of varsity play in 1974

    State football championships in Class 2A in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1988, 1991

State football championship in Class 5A in 1995 and 1996

State football championship in Division II in 2006

They still don't have as many titles as Alcoa or Maryville, but as far as the best team in one year my vote would have to go to the Cleveland team of 1993. That team was LOADED & beat Brentwood Academy in the SC game...

BTW - Before there were playoffs, Maryville's 1964 team was virtually unscored on & rated one of the top teams in the nation that year as well.

  16. JSampson7 needs to take a look at this.

I have looked at it, still doesn't equal the Blount County schools or their accomplishments. Any school would have a record like that if they recruit nationally like BA did back in the day. TN wouldn't have a Division II if it wasn't for BA or McCallie back in the day. Besides, they (BA) still don't have as many titles as Maryville or Alcoa.

BTW - You living in Tampa doesn't help you either, probably fried your brain going to Ebor(sp?) City too much... lol

  17. (YOU HEARD IT HERE 1st), if Hammontree comes to Heritage he will be bringing a former NFL/UT Vol on staff who told me himself wants to coach the O-Line!! He loves Hammontree & isn't afraid of building a winng tradition for the Mountaineers.

  18. No I could not do a better job as a great man for the community and the kids. I think coach Olive is a great man; with that said I also think he has lost control of his staff. Im tired of hearing him take the blame for everything we do wrong.I don't care what you say. Poor Coaching has cost us dearly over the last few years and that's a fact.

Having played for him when he was at Maryville, I beg to differ & everyone was glad he left...

  19. You can't spell nor can you read. If you look at the list I posted and playoff records, you will see that Brentwood Academy is at the top of that list. I didn't post a thing about percentages. Furthermore, I didn't allude to open enrollment, I stated it for the fact that it is. Lastly, I don't give a hairy rats butt about a Texas card game that you can't spell.

Ok Jerky... I noticed that misspelling as soon as I put it up there, but couldn't go back to edit it. Find another word that's wrong Nazi. There is no open enrollment at either school, get that fact straight. Maybe if you weren't from "Po-ducky" County in BFE you would realized that...

  20. You can't compare a whole district to one team. The reality is D7AAA is absolutely the best district in the state, hands down. I don't see that changing anytime soon because the 'Boro is one the fastest growing cities in the country. I heard there will a new high school built in Rockvale. If true, talent will be thinned again. As far as a single team goes, Maryville is the standard that other teams work toward. So, until someone knocks them off, Maryville is the best TEAM in the state. JMO :thumb:

You're right... It is a fast growing city & I am glad to say I received 2 of my degrees form MTSU. However, taking all of the titles won in Rutherford County (9) & comparing them to Blount County's (24) there's no contest. Total appearances factored in, Blount County (30) wins in a landslide (18).

  21. How many new high schools have opened up in your county/city school district in the last 10 years? Rutherfords growth has led to new high schools being opened in the county. That spreads the talent out dramatically. If Rutherford was a 3 or 4 high school county, I dont think Maryville would even be discussed.

The best football overall is in Rutherford county. Period. No discussion of hs football happens without them being discussed. Even with more and more schools spreading the wealth of athletes around, Rutherford is always in the hunt. Alcoa and Maryville are too, but they are realistically the only game in town. Any of about 5 teams are capable of a state championship from Rutherford.

You've got to be joking... Rutherford County was NOTHING before Rankin came, I lived there for years & know quite well the history there. Often times, they had players come in simply b/c their parents got jobs at the plant. Eric Locke being one prime example as he was a Cookeville kid about to play for my cousin's team before his daddy moved him the Riverdale. If you want to start looking at per capita numbers, Blount County has produced far more D1 players PER CAPITA than Rutherford County over the long haul. If you were to take the total number of players from each of the schools in Rutherford against a team of just Maryville/Alcoa boys, it wouldn't even be close... Better Coaches + Better Players = Better Football. You can't argue that fact & even more is the greatest coach in Rutherford County history now resides in Blount County. Not to mention the fact that he's only the 2nd best coach in Blount County right now.
