  1. Obviously, you know more about him than I do, but his last couple of stints were less than impressive... AC had a hard time even lining up right on defense this year, not to mention how horrible they played when they got lined up... Maybe he was just dealt some bad talent, that can make a coach look not so good. If he gets this job, we will all find out how good he is, turning this program around will be a tall order.

Bad talent is the key word there with AC. It wasn't like we had great talent before he took over at Maryville either. Granted we've always had great feeder programs, but until Olive took us to the playoffs my Freshman year we hadn't made the post season in a long time. Olive fortunately left (TERRIBLE COACH, otherwise I don't think Maryville would be where they're at today. Olive had an awesome team his last year (Rod Cross, Shaun Love, Brandon Bomar, Bard Hatcher, Donnie Carroll, etc.), but couldn't get over his own ego & got bounced out of the 1st round of the playoffs by a good Clinton team that Hammontree destroyed the next year w/ lesser talent.

As far as the other ""less than impressive stints", please don't blame him for the debacle that is the former Alcoa HC, Coach Reid... lol That guy's an idiot & the only reason he won 2 titles was b/c of the talent at Alcoa. Hammontree initially didn't realize how much of a moron Reid is & was blamed for most of the short comings Reid had in GA. Hammontree did a decent job at Rhea County before he left there, but again the talent pool was when he was at RC before coming to Maryville. The expectations of the folks at RC were a little unrealistic considering the talent available & after his youngest son graduated from RC, he unfortunately left back down to GA to work with Reid (a move he regrets). Hindsight is always 20/20 though...

  2. I have heard his name connected to the situation, so you may be spot on.

I think he would be a perfect fit for what they need. Hammontree would also "recruit the halls" if you will to get more kids out of the student body. A buddy of mine (Troy Fleming) is coaching with Hammontree now @ Anderson County. Coach Hammontree's a DC there & I'm sure he wants to be a HC again, but (according to Troy) both of them interviewed for the HC position at Centiniell(sp?) last year in Middle TN then landed at AC. Troy said they weren't sure why neither of them got the job being that Troy has a UT/NFL resume & Hammontree a state championship coach.

That said, both Hammontree & Troy have a lot of respect for Coach Gillium's offensive expertise. I played agaist Gillium 2x in HS when Hammontree was coaching @ Maryville so that situation's allittle odd when you look at it, but Hammontree going to Heritage would be a great thing for them...

If you really think about it, Hammontree was the driving force in bringing in the larger coaching staff, getting the facilities upgraded, & bringing back the championship tradition to Maryville. He also has established a pretty good coaching tree underneath him with GQ, Sweetland @ Farragut, Jason Hicks @ Greenback, Nix @ Alcoa, Stanley @ Marville Jr. High, as well as a few others having either played or coached for him. Bringing everything back to MHS & spreading some of his influence to other shcools says a lot about the man, but I feel Heritage has never really had a great tradition & think he can get that going w/ some help...

  3. I stated it was for the playoff history and it actually indicates Brentwood Academy is the greatest playoff team of all time. My point was there were great programs that have fallen on hard times and there are some programs that have gotten good. Then there are a select few that have always had periods of success. However, if you take a look at when open enrollment for Alcoa and Maryville occur, you will see it correlates with the record streaks they both have enjoyed the past decade.

Open enrollment?? What's that alluding to? Playoff win totals for BA doesn't equal to the fact the both Maryviile & Alcoa are very sclose to those totals with more state titles. Besides, one more win & 6 more losses gives them a better record?? Did you not study math? According to those totals, Alcoa's playoff winning percentage is 86%, Maryville's 81%, & Brentwood Academy's 77%. I'm guessing you failed math & can't play Texas Hole Em neither... lol

  4. These are the winningest Playoff teams in all classifications

    Playoff records from 1969:

Teams with more than 50 playoff wins

Brentwood Academy: 89-26 (55 different teams)

    Maryville: 88-20 (59 different teams)

    Alcoa: 78-12 (37 different teams)

Trousdale County: 70-22 (54 different teams)

    Milan 67-31 (49 different teams)

South Pittsburg: 59-23 (39 different teams)

    Goodpasture: 59-24 (43 different teams)

Oak Ridge: 59-25 (37 different teams)

    Riverdale: 58-21 (38 different teams)

David Lipscomb: 54-18 (40 different teams)

German Town: 52-23 (37 different teams)

    Just missed the 50 mark:

    Gallatin 47-30

    Melrose 47-23

    Austin East 45-21

    White House 45-28

    Marion County 44-26

    MUS 40-22

Thanks for the sta update. This just proves that Maryville & Alcoa have the 2 best programs of all time even though this is just for the last 20 years...

  5. OK , no problem , I have more respect for you now , I just don't like people who criticize behind a keyboard . I don't believe in saying anything here that I wouldn't say to someone's face , and apparently you agree with me .

Lol, no problem... I'm sure when I see him come Christmas dinner I'll have an interesting conversation with him about this very topic. Again though, I played with Coach Stanley as he was a class ahead of mine & can tell you he was a really good player which is why I feel would be a better coach b/c of it. It's unfortunate though as we had an "above average" team his Sr. year or I think he would have had a lot more attention as a college prospect.

I will say this though about that group of players. My team learned a lot from that class about hard work & continuing the Red Rebel tradition. We were the 1st since '78 to go undefeated in the regular season b/c of those lessons learned & if not for 4 MAJOR injuries to our best skill players, we would have been the 1st class to win a state title as opposed to Toki's class of '99 doing so years later...

  6. oh , you didn't say he plays politics ?

That's not throwing him under the bus. Look, if you want to know my name, it's Hughes. Now, what do you plan on doing with that? You want to run & go tell him what I said? I'll tell him myself, I have no shame in doing so. I don't envy his position at all being the coach at MMS, b/c I know exactly the kind of pressure he has with that position. You have every parent out there thinking that their kid needs to play b/c of this or that.

However, unlike Coach Hammontree or Coach Quarles, I don't feel Jay would play a kid who was better over a kid whose parents had more influence as a booster. Now Jay could tell me I'm wrong, but I'm going off the evidence I've seen as well as what I've heard from people who've had kids under his watch.

  7. Why don't you tell us who you are , everyone on here knows me already , you're the new guy . If you throw a family member under the bus like this , I'd hate to see how you do a stranger.

You think I threw Jay under the bus?? That's far from the truth, all I said was I didn't think he was a good player (which he will freely admit) & not necessarily a great coach. That has nothing to do with how I feel about him as my cousin, but you take it how you want I guess...

  8. Not Nix , I don't hide who I am . B. Phillips class of 79 , lucky enough to be on 2 State Championship teams . I wish everyone on here would reveal who they are .... everyone might be a lot nicer then .

Alcoa's class of 79 or Maryville's? I thought I replied to General Nix's thread though...

  9. The boys from MMS can if Malone will let them.

I have to agree with you on this one, weaklink. Unfortunately I feel that Coach Malone has fallen in the mold like previous MMS coaches who played the wrong kids due to politics. You won't see that as much at the high school level, especially after Coach Hammontree put a stop to that practive in the mid 90's. Although he wasn't entirely popular amongst the Maryville boosters, Hammontree is the one who laid the foundation of what MHS has become today & the the man responsible for bringing in Quarles as well as Ellis for this amazing run we've had over the better part of the last 2 decades.

  10. Congrats to Alcoa for the big WIN !! I think both Maryville and Alcoa will be very well served with these young men coming up . Look forward to seeing their development over the next few years .

Ha! Nix, you crack me up man. If this is really your profile Coach Nix, maybe I should have Coach Hammontree come down from AC & make you do some "Hatcher's"!!

  11. My $.02....All 4 Middle School coaches are classy guys who have taught many middle school boys a whole lot more than Football for many years while being pretty successful at a GAME. MMS got beat by a better team on Tuesday night...Alcoa has a great middle school team...ouch, that hurt to say. Sevier Co (A very good team) beat MMS on a sloppy field with our 1st and 2nd team QBs injured. Did I agree with every call? or Could we have beaten those teams if only _________? (fill in the blank). Who knows? I did not agree with every coach's decision but the score would probably have been much worst if I were calling the plays. It is easy to be an armchair QB or Coach but I would pick Coach Malone and crew over any of you armchair Coaches...myself included. Just my opinion...I don't even think it is worth two cents in today's economy...lol.

Having played with Coach Stanley, I would have to say that I trust his football acumen more so than Coach Malone's. Again, I'm not bashing my own family here, but I feel that Coach Stanley would be more accomplished knowing both of them like I do.

  12. I will agree that this Alcoa Middle School team was a good team and had a great season. But to say they are the "best of all time" , NOT EVEN CLOSE. This is the first "Championship of any kind won by this Middle School coach and team. I do not think Coach McClurg was the head coach the last time Alcoa won the Middle School title. Coach McClurg and several of these kids were at Eagleton for the Grasshoppers / Peewee / and Midget league. They never won the Superbowl. These Maryville 8th Graders who started out with Coach David Hunt as a 7 year old grasshopper have finished their past 8 years of football with a record of 75 wins and 4 losses / 6 Superbowl Championship / 1 Middle School Championship 2010... and are a part of the last 16 wins of the 26 straight wins MMS had going until losing to Sevier Co. Let Alcoa approach 26 straight middle school wins then they can be put in this discussion. Alcoa had the better team this year but they did not blow MMS off of the field. Bad snap and blocked punt hurt MMS ....but they competed hard and in no way did they get blown off the field. Last years MMS team and the team in 2009 were just as dominate as this years AMS in my opinion.

I have read a lot of talk about the MMS coach and I would like to say he has done a great job with these kids. Jay Malone is a good man and coach. He has won a lot of ball games and I may not always agree with every decision, he has been very successful. Its easy to second guess from sitting in the stands.

Being that he is family, I will definitely say that Coach Malone is a good man, a great man in fact. However, I will have to disagree with the board on his coaching expertise. Out of everyone in the family who played football, I would have to say he was the worst player of the group...

  13. Nation loves this team and rightfully so ... they were big and impressive. However, the Alcoa Middle team I saw play when Warren and Tyson were 8th graders, I believe, was clearly a better team. They beat Maryville that year something like 55 - 6.

I haven't watched a lot of middle school ball, but with some of the winning streaks Maryville has had through the years, I'm sure some of their teams would rank up at the top as well.

But for me, my vote would have to go to that 2006 AMS team for best middle school team I've watched play.

I don't think they could beat the MMS team with Toki McCray at QB. That group is probably one of the best to come out of MMS in the last 20 years.
